Jump Ship To Freedom Book Report
What is a human life worth? To some it's priceless, and to others nothing at all. As humans we tend
not to think about it and just live, it's what we do. In the past however, it was a different story, the
world is completely different now. Life used to be much harder than it currently is, especially for
African Americans. In the book "Jump Ship to Freedom" by authors Christopher Collier and James
Lincoln Collier, you get a deep look into the life of an African American slave child named Daniel
Arabus. Daniel wishes to complete his father's goal of buying himself and his mother's freedom, so
he ends up risking his whole life for soldiers notes that could ultimately be worth absolutely
nothing. Though the events are fictionalized, this book shows the readers what life would've been
like after the American Revolution. The story transpires in early May of 1787 on a plantation in
Stratford, Connecticut. Taking place not long after the American Revolution, the government wasn't
quite set up yet, which plays an important role in the book. The United States had not defined itself
yet. Though the country had won its war for independence, it lacked the unity and organization that
it needed in order to truly call itself a nation. Since United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

main author graduating from Hamilton College, he received the information needed to write the
book from Christopher. Both have written a series of historical fiction books to educate youth about
slavery and its effect on slaves. The authors seemed to have a bias toward slavery, it seemed this
way most likely due to emphasization of the treatment of slaves. The story itself stands alone when
it comes to history or other events at the time, some of the people who were involved in the story

The Louisiana Purchase
"One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all," does that sound familiar? If so,
it is because nearly everyone in America knows these words like the back of their hand. However,
most do not consider their importance. These words are a part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Pay
attention to the beginning, "one nation," a nation that changed significantly with the Louisiana
Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase added 828,000 square miles which doubled the land area of the
United States (history.com 1). The importance of the Louisiana Purchase can be best appreciated by
understanding why this purchase was considered significant to the United States, why France agreed
to sell such a sizable amount of land, and how the Louisiana Purchase changed the United States
forever.
The United States was interested in the purchase of Louisiana for a number of reasons; to protect the
citizens' of the United States right to trade through the Port of New Orleans, to ensure that the
British did not establish a new colony in the new land, and to allow the United States' farmers and
merchants to move westward. In 1682, the French discovered a large piece of land in North America
which they named Louisiana after their king, King Louis XVI. Following the French and Indian
War, King Louis XVI thought this land was a useless piece of uncharted wilderness. The king
decided to give this enormous section of land to his cousin, King Charles III of Spain as a "reward"
for Spain's support

Summary Of Tim Meeker In My Brother Sam Is Dead
A true indication of a person's character is the actions she/ he takes when dealing with life's
conflicts. In My Brother Sam is Dead, the authors, James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier,
create Tim Meeker. Tim, a twelve year old, is growing up and facing many conflicts during the era
of the American Revolution. While Tim is dealing with these internal and external conflicts, the
reader can see Tim's personality traits: confused and creative, by what he says and does, and by what
others say in response to him. Tim's first personality trait is confused, which is a person vs self
conflict. Tim was often confused throughout the novel about many things. One of the things he is
confused about is how he isn't sure about what side to be on,

Character Analysis: My Brother Sam Is Dead
Do ethics, personal beliefs, and family have an effect on your identity? The historical fiction novel,
My Brother Sam is Dead, by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier is about a young boy
named Tim Meeker and his journey through the American Revolutionary war. Tim's older brother
Sam is a Patriot but his father, Life, is a Tory. This causes the main conflict in the story for Tim to
become either a Patriot or a Tory. The author conveys the message doing what's right through the
use of different literary elements in the novel; internal conflict, external conflict, and irony.
Throughout the story Tim faced internal conflict as he struggled with doing what's right. When Tim
realized father was gone and was thinking to himself, "So I asked myself another question: what
would father do?" page 121. Even though Tim idolizes Sam he ... Show more content on

He does this because in the end of the story all the hard work he has done and ethics he had learned
had paid off. Tim encountered internal conflict when he was all alone when the cowboys took Father
and when he pities himself for having to do many chores as he is waiting for Sam in the barn.
Throughout the story Tim Faced external conflict as he struggled with doing what's right. When Tim
finds the Brown Bess with Sam inside Tom Warrups hut, "I picked up the gun, ducked through the
door of the shack..." page 54. Tim knew that Life needed the Brown Bess so Tim did the right thing

Analysis Of My Brother Sam Is Dead
Can you imagine fighting and living through the beginning of the American Revolution? Authors
James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier published in 1974, My Brother Sam Is Dead. This
book occurred in Redding, Connecticut in 1776 during the American Revolution. My Brother Sam
Is Dead is a story of a sixteen–year–old, Sam Meeker, which decided to join the army to fight
against the British. While his younger brother, Tim Meeker must decide between his brother's
loyalty to become an independent nation from the British or his father's loyalty to the British
government. Several months had passed and the Rebels, which fought against the British, had
kidnapped their father, Eliphalet Meeker. Two thieves broke into Sam and Tim's barn and Sam
chased the thieves, but a group of men apprehended and framed him for their crime, leaving his fate
uncertain.
Due to the fact that, Tim Meeker must decide whether to confine his loyalty to his father or his
brother, Tim is unsure of where his loyalty shall lie. Tim realizes that the American Revolutionary
War was on the brink to become a long war between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain.
Feeling uncertain Betsy Read, Sam's girlfriend, asked Tim what his decision was on the topic and he
responded with "I don't understand what it's all about." Although Tim was unsure and unaware with
what is occurring, Sam believed that he was correct and his father was incorrect. Sam believed that
between his father's opinion, and his opinion that

'Anxiety: Challenge By Another Name'
Emotional intelligence or EQ is as important as intellectual intelligence because it helps a person
understand themselves emotionally. An emotionally intelligent person can control how they deal
with stress, which, consequently helps to become successful in several areas of life, such as work,
relationships, and career. EQ helps you become aware of yourself mentally and to understand others
socially. It impacts all of your life daily, from getting things done to helping friends and family or
yourself emotionally. It also helps with being able to understand others and manipulate them for
your gain, to get their trust and friendship to form healthy relationships. ("Emotional Intelligence"

When questioned, several witnesses said they were either afraid or were unsure of what to do and
made excuses to not get involved. One witness demonstrates not being able to reduce stress in the
moment when he explains that he thought of calling but wasn't sure so he called a friend for advice.
("Thirty–Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police" 16). He says, "I didn't want to get
involved," which shows that he was too scared to call the police. He couldn't assess his emotions in
the moment to help someone in need. Another witness had admitted to seeing the murder but when
asked why she didn't call she said, she didn't know. She understood the situation but isn't sure why
she didn't call. ("Thirty–Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police" 17). She demonstrated that
she didn't understand her own emotions and couldn't calm herself down in the situation because she
was most likely scared. Few witnesses made excuses like they were "too tired" and "thought it was a
lover's quarrel" showing they were stressed in the moment and tried to get away from it. If they
improved on those skills, of understanding their emotions and learn to deal with stress in the
moment they wouldn't have to make up excuses and have an easier time calling the police next

Stokesie In John Updike's A & P
In John Updike's story, "A&P," the character Stokesie would most likely choose to spend the next
thirty years working in the supermarket. Stokesie is a twenty–two year old married man who has
two children. Most likely, Stokesie has not received a college education and as a result works at the
A&P supermarket. Sammy, the narrator of "A&P" states, "I forgot to say he thinks he's going to be
manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990" (Updike 17). Sammy's observations of Stokesie's
ambitions show that Stokesie plans on working at the A&P long enough to be promoted from sales
clerk to manager. It could take years for Stokesie to get promoted to such a high position. In addition

In Braaksma's essay, "Some Lessons from the Assembly Line" Braaksma states, "The most stressful
thing about blue–collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight" (Braaksma 485).
Experiencing such paranoia about losing a job and also completing hard manual labor has taught
Braaksma to appreciate what he has in life such as his education. Braaksma's experience would push
him to advise Sammy to keep his job because Sammy's job at the A&P was secure and easy, labor
wise. He would advise that Sammy take advantage of his job because it is one that many wish they
could have. However, James Lincoln Collier might support Sammy in his decision to quit his job. In
Collier's essay, "Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name," Collier states, "Each time you try
something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you" (Collier 85). Collier
would consider Sammy's decision part of a learning experience. He would advise Sammy to quit his
job because it is something new and would teach Sammy life lessons that would help him in the
future. I would advise Sammy to think his decision through before quitting his job. In the story,
"A&P," it seemed as though Sammy quit his job rather abruptly for no reason at all. He quit his job
to look like a hero in front of Queenie and her friends but they had already left the store. I would

The Violence of Being Human
Essay #2

A picture's worth 1,000 words Does a picture say more than a video? A writer both gains and loses
leverage over the message of feeling he or she is trying to convey. Most humans would argue
different things. Some would say they conceive more from a picture because of their ability to use
their imagination and challenge themselves to a greater level. Others would argue that they
appreciate more from a video because they are left without any questions about what is happening
during that moment in time because of the visual confirmation. In Edward Said's essay States, Said
uses photos that add feeling and depth to portray the message of stereotyped Palestinians. The quote
from States explains how photos can be very significant in some cases, "Identity– who we are,
where we come from, what we are– is difficult to maintain in exile. Most other people take their
identity for granted. Not the Palestinian, who is required to show proofs of identity more or less
constantly. It is not only that we are regarded as terrorists, but that our existence as native Arab
inhabitants of Palestine, with primordial rights there (and not elsewhere), is either denied or
challenged" (Said 546). As discussed above, in some cases, photos can be more necessary than text.
In States there is an image of an unknown boy at a Gaza refugee camp wearing a Grease shirt (Said,
552). This image communicates what might take many pages of description.

Summary Of My Brother Sam Is Dead
In the book my Brother Sam is Dead, by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, I noticed a
strong theme; how war divides individuals, families, communities, and countries. This book takes
place during the Revolutionary War, and Tim Meeker, the narrator, has a Father who is a Loyalist
and a brother, Sam, who is a Patriot. Sam goes off to fight for the Patriots, and hard times come
because of the war . When Father and Tim are coming back from Verplancks' Point, Father gets
kidnapped by cow–boys. He is then killed in a British prison ship. Sam is killed because he is taken
in as cattle thief, which he really wasn't. He is then executed. The Meeker family is then torn up
because of the war, with half of the family dead. I will show you ... Show more content on

One of them was Tim, whose brother was a Patriot and whose Father was a Loyalist. A few
examples are: on page 114, Tim and Father have a conversation that shows they are depending on
the British side, for protection against the Patriots. This happens after they were attacked by the
Patriots, and the Loyalists rescued them. Tim is on the Loyalists side because of how they rescued
him, and also because he is depending on them. Another example is right after Tim saw Ned's head
chopped off. Tim decides he doesn't feel like being a Tory anymore. Tim throws up all over himself
when he sees Ned killed, and as he says, "It was a long time before I realized I was soaked with cold
sweat and crying," which shows he doesn't like any violence, and that war was tearing him up (page
145). As well as on Page 167, when Tim says, "...I decided that I wasn't going to be on anyone's side
anymore: neither of them was right." That shows that war divides individuals because after going
back and forth for a while, Tim finally decided he wasn't going to be on any side in the war
anymore, because neither side was right. From the examples above, you can see Tim vacillating
between Patriots and Loyalist; torn by war, as well as torn by family because of the

My Brother Sam Is Dead Themes
The Interesting book by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, My Brother Sam Is Dead,
has a very big theme. The big theme was how war impacts families. The main characters in the book
are Samuel Meeker, Tim Meeker, Life Meeker, and Susanna Meeker. They have a tavern that is
located in Redding Ridge, Connecticut, which is split up because of the war. The tavern is not split
up
War impacts many things; one of the topics that war impacts is individuals. Tim is torn by war
because on pg. 127, Tim says, "Having father gone was strange. The tavern seemed cold and
empty." The reason I can infer that Tim is torn is because he has been attacked by Patriots and saved
by Loyalists. He also doesn't know whether to follow Sam or father. Father

War: The Real Price To Be Paid "In war the dead pay the debts for the living," (Collier and Collier
167). The real cost of war is so great that the thought of paying the price is rather unfathomable. In
My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier we get a glimpse into
the lives of not only the Meekers but the people of their town and we observe the price they paid for
one of the biggest and most powerful wars of our American history, The American Revolution. In
this historical fiction, Tim Meeker must choose whether he wants to be a loyal subject to the king of
England or a rebellious and freedom yearning American Patriot like his role model and brother, Sam

Something as simple as perspective among Eliphalet and Sam tears the Meeker family apart. In My
Brother Sam Is Dead by Collier and Collier talk about how people of all ages fought in the war.
"Yale students did rush away to get weapons and join the war in 1775." (Collier and Collier 214).
Sam was one of those Yale students who went to fight and among him, as explained in the previous
quote, were many others. Although Sam thought highly of leaving school to fight Eliphalet Meeker
felt otherwise. Eliphalet Meeker says to Sam, "Now take off that uniform and go back to your
studies." We also see a clash of generations with the adults in Redding who are also against war. Mr.
Beach, the Pastor of the Anglican church in Redding, says, "God meant man to obey. He meant
children to obey their fathers, he meant men to obey their kings." The constant argument between
the generations is whether or not the younger generations should even have any input when it came
to the war. This constant clash of generations was not only causing issues between Loyalists and
Patriots but also causing problems between the generations that comprise each side.
In My Brother Sam Is Dead by Collier and Collier the general argument between Eliphalet and Sam
has to do with Sam ideals of war and Eliphalet's realities of war. Sam says, "It's not the money, it's
the principle." (Collier and Collier 21). Sam fights for his principle of freedom and the glory of war.

My Brother Sam Is Dead Analysis
My Brother Sam is Dead Soundtrack
My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier relates to "99 Red
Balloons" by Nena, "Get Up" by Superchick, and "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan through some of the
lyrics. "99 Red Balloons" tells about a war and the lyrics relate to Susannah (Mother), Life (Father),
Sam, and Tim Meeker along with Betsey Read. "Get Up" relates to Sam specifically because he is
so confident he won't fail. "Wavin' Flag" relates mainly to Sam again, but also relates to Tim.
"99 Red Balloons" (originally in German with the name of "99 Luftballons" ) relates to My Brother
Sam is Dead in some of the lyrics. One of the lines "There's something here from somewhere else"
relates to My Brother Sam is Dead because that is how Sam feels about the British. He thinks that
they don't belong in the colonies, the should stay in Britain. Another line: "Opens up one eager eye"
shows how eager Sam is for war; he wants to fight. The line: "To worry, worry, super scurry" tells
how worried everyone in the Meeker family (and Betsey Read) is about Sam. Tim and ... Show

Neutrality In My Brother Sam Is Dead
The American Revolution was a war of principles fought by Loyalists and Patriots. However,
Loyalists believed in neutrality, peace, and no brutality or treason. Therefore, Patriots believed in
freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, and the right to break away from the British government.
In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead created by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, a
family disputes over which side is right. James and Christopher Collier use the ironies of Life, Jerry,
and Sam's death to induce Tim's decision of neutrality. Firstly, Life's death contributes to Tim's
reasons to be neutral. For an instance, Tim finds out that father was taken by cowboys on the way
back from Verplanks Point. " In June of that year, 1777, we found out that father was dead.""...it
wasn't a Rebel prison, ship it was a British one"(164). Tim expects father would die because the
cowboys had already attacked him for cattle and he was a Loyalist. Tim discovers that loyalty is
valued in the British side. He thinks that why should he be loyal to a side that's dishonest. Tim
chooses neutrality because the Loyalists are deceptive, brutal, and aren't true to their word. Since
Tim does not want to be on a side with a bunch of hypocrites, he becomes neutral. ... Show more

For an example, Sam is a scapegoat and is publicly executed for stealing his own cattle. Which is a
very stupid reason to be executed. " He went on jerking with flames on his chest until another
soldier shot him again, then he stopped jerking"(208). Tim expects that Sam will die, but in a
glorious heroic manner after he single handedly vanquished the British army. Tim however does not
expect Sam to die as a cattle thief and realizes the unjust and brutal ways of the war. Tim becomes
neutral because Tim does not want to support a side that killed his brother for no valid

James Lincoln Collier's My Brother Sam Is Dead
Truly believing in something means that you are willing to stand up for it and risk your life or suffer
consequences because of it. In James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier's My Brother Sam is
Dead, Sam Meeker did just that. It showed a story where even though standing up for something
that you believe leads to other conflicts, it's worth it if you truly believe in it.
During the American Revolution, people would risk their lives for what they believed in specifically
freedom, and they would be willing to suffer the consequences of their actions. This book takes
place in a time period where it was quite common for young men to join the army and the fight for
freedom. In an argument between Father and Sam, Sam brings up, "Sir, it's worth dying to be free."
This statement is showing how Sam feels about freedom. Even though Sam believes it, didn't mean
that others did. Sam's father hadn't agreed with him, which sparked a bigger argument. The
argument had created a very tense relationship between Sam and Father, but Sam had stood up for
what he believed even though others around him didn't agree. It showed that even though he knew ...

We continued to learn that although things weren't always at peace at home, Sam still believed in
caring for his family. One specific example was when both Sam and his brother heard noises coming
from outside. "There are people out there," Sam shouted. "Let's go." This is showing that while Sam
still wasn't quite at ease with his family, he cared for them so much that he had risked himself –
without knowing that the cattle thieves could turn on him– by going out to try and stop them. Sam
had believed that his family was important, so he chose to go out and try and save the cattle. It's
showing that while things still weren't quite settled with his family, he was willing to do something
for them because he believed that his family was also

Symbolism In My Brother Sam Is Dead
"It's a funny thing. You'd think that if there was a war going on in your own country, it would make
your life different." (Collier 38) Tim, the protagonist, is trying to live an ordinary life during time of
the Revolutionary War as he works on his family's tavern. However, his brother Sam wants to join
the Rebel Army and wants to defeat the British, otherwise known as the Loyalists who Sam and
Tim's father support as they support the king. In My Brother Sam Is Dead the author's James
Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier use the Brown Bess to symbolize power and authority.
Throughout the story, the brothers use father getting hurt because the soldiers think that father has
the gun to link to show power. For example in the text it states, "The officer looked at father,
considering. Finally he said, 'I don't believe you.' He raised the sword. I gasped and the officer
whipped the flat side of the blade across Father's face." (Collier 51) Here, father getting sliced
shows that father was trying to be honest and saying that he doesn't have the gun because he knows
that Sam has it and took it. Also, " I'm telling you the truth my son ran off to your army and took my
gun. We have no weapons here but butcher knives." ( Collier 51) This textual evidence shows that
the officer wanted the gun and thought that father was lying about that he didn't have the gun but the
author thought he had the gun. Since the police thought father was lying so he took the knife and
sliced father.

Silent Sam, By Julia Craven
Silent Sam
"UNC can no longer say silent on Silent Sam," Julia Craven from the Huffington Post wrote. Silent
Sam is a memorial in the middle of the University of North Carolina's campus built to honor
students who left school and fought in the Civil War. The Civil War was a war between the northern
and southern states fought over slavery. Many students now think that the statue is offensive because
the people that it honors fought for the South and supported slavery.
Silent Sam was erected in 1913 for 321 UNC students who fought in the Civil War. It's called Silent
Sam because he has no ammunition so he's quiet and then just Sam. The university still had classes
during the war.The statue faces North as if it's fighting for the confederates. Some students
vandalized it because they thought that it was offencive and shouldn't be there. In conclusion The

Why did the U.S. use the atomic bomb?
The years leading up to World War II and the dropping of the atomic bombs were hectic and
disordered, from the rise of Hitler in 1933, U.S. isolationism in 1934, to the death of U.S. President
Roosevelt. The war showed no signs of ending and the security and freedom of nations around the
world were in danger. Order was nowhere to be found, and the decision to even consider using the
atomic bomb was unpreventable. The U.S. used the atomic bomb because it was the only way Japan
would surrender, the world wanted to end the war as soon as possible with as little casualties as
possible, and because of resentful feelings toward Japan.
Japan often fought until the last man standing... the atomic bomb was ... Show more content on

It is debated however whether Japan would have surrendered without the catastrophic aid of the
bombs. There were numerous attacks that would have eventually prompted Japan to give in. Any
sane government would have surrendered after Iwo Jima, a deadly battle where 27,000 Japanese
fought against 70,000 U.S marines...an inevitable loss for Japan.
Nonetheless, the power of the bomb had convinced the world of its horror it even amazed its
inventors. The surrender of Japan was not the only thing that compelled the use of the bombs.
President Truman knew that they would have eventually given in, but he had them dropped anyway
"as a way of scaring the Communist Soviet Union into peaceful post–war behavior" (Collier, 81).
The bomb impressed them and stopped them from asking for joint occupation of Japan. This was a
major feat because that is the major reason why Russia joined the war hastily in 1945 in the first
place. They sensed a victory for the U.S and perhaps the spoils of war for themselves.
The Allies agreed to conditional surrender in order to save the lives of thousands of Japanese and
Americans. More people would have died if Japan were invaded than dropping the bomb at
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Government and military officials knew that attacking on the Japanese
mainland would be gruesome because of relentless willpower to win. Kamikaze planes, planes

Character Analysis: My Brother Sam Is Dead
War: Is It Really Worth It? 223 years ago, an innocent, ten–year–old boy died on a prison ship. His
name was Jerry Sanford and he lived with Captain Starr, a local Patriot. The day Jerry was captured,
British troops raided the only home he had ever known and killed several of his friends including his
guardian, Daniel Starr. In My Brother Sam Is Dead, one of Jerry's friends was a boy named Tim
Meeker. He was not killed the day of the attack on Starr's house, but witnessed the deaths from
behind a rock. In the story, Tim has a brother: Samuel Meeker. He was a Patriot soldier fighting in
the American Revolution for freedom, rights, and glory. Sam and Tim's parents, however, were loyal
to the British Crown and disapproved of their son fighting with the rebels. In My Brother Sam Is
Dead, although both sides of the war are shown, authors James and Christopher Collier ultimately
argue that war is futile. One way the authors argue against war is how they show examples of family
division. A major conflict in the Meeker family was Mr. Meeker being loyal to the British King and
Sam fighting as a patriot soldier in the war. This resulted in Tim being caught in the middle,
questioning which side of the war he should support. Either choice, he decided, would be a
disappointment to at least one of his family members. "...between worrying about that and being
confused over which side was right I couldn't concentrate on church much" (Collier and Collier 29).
The tension between Mr.

Character Analysis: My Brother Sam Is Dead
Throughout the story My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier,
the character Sam, shows significant change. In the beginning of the book, Sam continuously argues
with his father about going to war. Sam wants to fight for the Patriots and make the colonies
independent from Britain. His father, Life, is a strong Tory, and does not approve of his son fighting
for the Patriots. Sam is stubborn and runs away to fight. But once Sam learns of the hardship his
family goes through while he is away, he becomes more sympathetic and helpful. Sam is a dynamic
character, because he changes from being stubborn and disrespectful to his father, to understanding
and forgiving about the choices he made, and who they affected.
In the beginning of the story, Sam tries to explain to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When his troops set up camp in his hometown of Redding, Sam sneaks home multiple times to be
with and help his family. It is a very hard time for the Meekers, they had recently found out that Life
had died on a prison ship after being captured by cowboys, and Sam had been away at war;
therefore, Sams visits home were very important to Tim and his Mother. Along with his visits home,
Sam would help out at the tavern or work in the barn. Even though Sam had pushed his family
away, he is able to help them when they need it most. This shows extreme maturity. "He was staying
in the army because he wanted to stay in the army, not because it was his duty or anything else. He
liked the excitement of it...It felt good to be a part of it, I knew that was the real reason why he
didn't want to come home" (162–163). At this point in the story, Tim realizes that Sam was not being
stubborn, instead, he wanted to show his family that he could be responsible. Going into war made
Sam feel as if he were a part of something big, but in the end, when things certainly do not go as
planned,he realized that family was the most important

Examples Of Neutralism In My Brother Sam Is Dead
Neutrality in War: Tim's Decision In war, is freedom more valuable than life? For example, at the
time of the Revolutionary War, people had to choose between liberty or life. When the colonies
decided to break away from the tyrannical rule of King George the Third, sides had to be chosen.
The Patriots, who wanted independence, fought for justice and liberation while the Loyalists wished
to stand with Britain. Some chose not to stand on either side and remained neutral. Through threats
and violent attacks, people were forced to choose a side. In the novel My Brother Sam Is Dead, it
describes the different viewpoints and decisions of a character who decides to stay neutral in the
war. The ironic deaths of Ned, Life, and Sam induces Tim to be neutral in the war. The irony of
Ned's death influences Tim to be nonbelligerent. During the onslaught of Captain Starr's house, one
of the house's slaves, Ned, is gratuitously killed. The authors, Christopher and James Lincoln Collier
state, "' There are some damned blacks in here, what shall we ... Show more content on

A couple of soldiers in Sam's regiment accuse Sam of stealing cattle from the Meeker barn. He gets
put on trial and is killed for his "crimes". Tim explains the stolen cattle situation to General Putnam:
"Sam wouldn't steal our own cattle... He's been fighting for three years, he's been a good soldier "
(196). Tim is expecting Sam to get mercy because he was an honorable soldier, but he got executed
for something he didn't do. Sam was supposed to die a hero or die doing something worthwhile.
Instead, Sam dies in the most inglorious way, being shot as an example. Moreover, the way Sam
dies demonstrates what war is truly like; war is not a adventure, it is a death wish. With neutrality,
Tim can be dissociated from the people who killed his brother. Previously, Tim thought war was an
adventure, but seeing how unfairly the war treated Sam, Tim decides not to select a

Comparing My Brother Sam Is Dead And Colony Of Fear
Paragraphs for Essay Why is it that in My Brother Sam is Dead and in Colony of Fear there is so
much hate between the characters? In this essay there I am going to compare and contrast two
novels. The novels are My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
and Colony of Fear by Lucy Jane Bledsoe. The Topics to be compared and contrasted are the
characters protagonists and antagonists and the conflict. In My Brother Sam id Dead someone
named Sam Meeker wanted to go to the Revolutionary War, but he went to his house to steal his
father's gun. So, his father caught him then, Sam went to War, with desperation, he left his post he
was caught and charged to be sentenced death then, his brother Tim Meeker went to General Putman
to convince him to release Sam out of jail but he failed. In Colony of Fear, someone named Samuel
Roberts wanted to work as a shoemaker and learn from a man named Master Beacon. But, when
Samuel met a girl named Anne Stoneburry which she was a Puritan. Then he met another girl named
Susannah which she was Reverend Rockmore's daughter. He wanted to marry her. So both of them

novel he never laughed for nothing and he never hot happy for something. Samuel Roberts was very
polite because he always treated Nathaniel, Anne, Susannah, and Master Beacon with politeness.
Samuel is very successful because when he wanted to be a shoemaker he could all thanks to Master

Summary Of My Brother Sam Is Dead
The book I read is called My Brother Sam is Dead. This book is written by James Lincoln Collier
and also Christopher Collier, the genre of this book is Historical Drama. The setting of My Brother
Sam is Dead are that times are hard and they seem to not be getting much better. The Meekers (Sam,
Tim, Life, and Susannah) are having a very rough time making money and also living. Sam is off
fighting in the war for the Rebels (p.40) against the British, which made it harder for the Meekers
due to the fact that they had less people to help out.
Sam had come back home from college to see his family. Once he returns he explains to them how
he is going to fight in the war against the British. This left just Tim, Susannah, and Life to take care
of their tavern and their cattle. Times were very hard from there on (pp.63 and 129) Life was
captured by the cowboys on his way back with Tim and later died on a British prison ship (p.164).
Hard times went on and Sam tells Susannah and Tim that he won't stop fighting in the war until the
Redcoats are defeated (p.161). Sam was later framed for stealing his own cattle by other men that
actually stole it (p.181) and in result of this Sam was sentenced to be killed by General Putnam
(Sam died by being shot) (p.208). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Retaliation In Slavery
Question: How does Retaliation affect the British and the Colonists? In our study of the
Revolutionary War Era, we engaged in some pre Rev War work, with the events leading up to the
Revolutionary War, then went into Historical Fiction book clubs, watched and discussed the Sons of
Liberty and through all of this I have come to believe that... One of the ways I have seen Retaliation
throughout my notes is in "Sons of Liberty". For example, After the Boston Tea Party, the British
retaliated by killing multiple colonists in the village, and whipping Sam Adams. Next, After the
colonists stole the gun powder from the British, The british than declared war and killed multiple
americans. My third piece of evidence is, In Sons of Liberty, when Thomas Gage's wife had an

George had this idea to teach the colonists a lesson. They levied taxes, and didn't listen to the
colonists complaints. The colonists got angry and retaliated with a war called "The War of
Independence. Although this was different to the Revolutionary War, it was one of the many events

Louis Armstrong Essay
Louis Armstrong's Influential Career
Louis Armstrong's Influential Career Louis Armstrong was the most successful and talented jazz
musician in history. His influence and expansive career continues to make waves in the jazz world.
That is what made him become what he is to many today – a legend. Born on August 4, 1901, in the
poorest section of New Orleans, Armstrong grew up with his grandparents due to his parents'
separation. On January 1, 1913 he made a mistake which turned out to be the best thing that ever
happened to him. At a New Year's celebration in downtown New Orleans, Louis Armstrong, also
known as "Satchmo" and "Satch", fired a pistol into the air and was placed in the Colored Waifs'

When Armstrong reached the City and began playing everyone went wild. No where had they ever
heard anything like him. Before this time, he had only played instruments but he was soon
encouraged to begin singing. It was then discovered that Armstrong had a natural extension of his
trumpet abilities, which was singing. His gravelly voice was something new that had never been
heard (Sadie 600). Armstrong formed a studio band in 1925 called the Hot Five. The band included
Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory, John St. Cyr, Lil Armstrong, and himself. These recordings were some of
the most famous made by Armstrong, including "Mandy Make Up Your Mind" and "Money Blues"
(Bergreen 96). A year later the Hot Five made their only public appearance at the Chicago Coliseum.
The Chicago Defender spoke of "Louis Armstrong, the miracle with steel lips," (Boujut 27). For the
next few years Armstrong recorded with the Hot Five and played with other musicians in New York
and Chicago. He then traveled to California, in July of 1930, where he starred in his first film,
Flame. Only after he had been in California for a few weeks he was arrested at a nightclub for the
possession of marijuana. The incident obviously caused a lot of controversy across the world. The
sentence, six months in prison, was suspended after only three days. Mainly due to Armstrong's
addiction to marijuana, Lil separated from him and they no longer

This book begins with Sam Meeker, Tim Meeker's admired older brother, arrives in uniform at the
Meeker tavern one rainy April evening in 1775. "We've beaten the British in Massachusetts," Sam
exclaims, beginning a fight with Father, who is staunchly loyal to the English government and king.
Sam explains to the people around the table how the Minutemen lay a surprise attack on the British

Tim meets his cousins, the Platts, for the first time. Four girls sleep in a tiny clapboard house and the

plenty of room for himself and Sam to sleep comfortably. In a cozy scene, the Platt family, Tim, and

The book, With Every Drop of Blood, by James Lincoln Collier, and Christopher Collier, is a Civil
War based fiction book. The authors are brothers who have both written several books before. This
book is not based on a true story, but follows similar events during the Civil War. The authors were
able to take real life information from the Civil War, and make it into a story. Readers from seventh
to eighth grade would be able to read this story. While it is easy to read and follow, the content
might be too mature for any younger reader. FollettBound Platinum is the publisher, and it was
published in January of 1994. Johnny and Cush are the main two characters in this book. Johnny is a
brave, stubborn young boy. He cares very much about his family and does a lot to earn money for

It is recorded that Louis did attend school at the Fisk school where he learned to read and write.
How long he attended this school is another mystery. One fact we do know about Louis is that he
was arrested on New Years Eve 1912 for shooting a gun. Louis was around eleven at the time, and
this was a very serious offense. He was sent to the Coloreds Waif House a reform school on the out

when Louis was introduced to playing a musical instrument. The teacher, Professor Pete Davis, first

fact that I am often drawn to historical fiction books, this one I found to be rather dull and boring for

Set in the Revolutionary War Era, this novel tells the story of the Meeker family. In the town of
Redding Ridge, Connecticut, most are loyal to King George. But there are a few Patriots in the
midst, and these differing views are what began to break families apart and turn former friends and

If so, it is because nearly everyone in America knows these words like the back of their hand. However, most do not consider their importance. These words are a part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Pay attention to the beginning, "one nation," a nation that changed significantly with the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase added 828,000 square miles which doubled the land area of the United States (history.com 1). The importance of the Louisiana Purchase can be best appreciated by understanding why this purchase was considered significant to the United States, why France agreed to sell such a sizable amount of land, and how the Louisiana Purchase changed the United States forever. The United States was interested in the purchase of Louisiana for a number of reasons; to protect the citizens' of the United States right to trade through the Port of New Orleans, to ensure that the British did not establish a new colony in the new land, and to allow the United States' farmers and merchants to move westward. In 1682, the French discovered a large piece of land in North America which they named Louisiana after their king, King Louis XVI. Following the French and Indian War, King Louis XVI thought this land was a useless piece of uncharted wilderness. • 19. Stokesie In John Updike's A & P In John Updike's story, "A&P," the character Stokesie would most likely choose to spend the next thirty years working in the supermarket. Stokesie is a twenty–two year old married man who has two children. Most likely, Stokesie has not received a college education and as a result works at the A&P supermarket. Sammy, the narrator of "A&P" states, "I forgot to say he thinks he's going to be manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990" (Updike 17). Sammy's observations of Stokesie's ambitions show that Stokesie plans on working at the A&P long enough to be promoted from sales clerk to manager. It could take years for Stokesie to get promoted to such a high position. In addition to this, Stokesie would work as manager of the A&P for many years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Braaksma's essay, "Some Lessons from the Assembly Line" Braaksma states, "The most stressful thing about blue–collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight" (Braaksma 485). Experiencing such paranoia about losing a job and also completing hard manual labor has taught Braaksma to appreciate what he has in life such as his education. Braaksma's experience would push him to advise Sammy to keep his job because Sammy's job at the A&P was secure and easy, labor wise. He would advise that Sammy take advantage of his job because it is one that many wish they could have. However, James Lincoln Collier might support Sammy in his decision to quit his job. In Collier's essay, "Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name," Collier states, "Each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you" (Collier 85). Collier would consider Sammy's decision part of a learning experience. He would advise Sammy to quit his job because it is something new and would teach Sammy life lessons that would help him in the future. I would advise Sammy to think his decision through before quitting his job. In the story, "A&P," it seemed as though Sammy quit his job rather abruptly for no reason at all. • 21. The Violence Of Being Human Kaitlyn McKenzie The Violence of Being Human Essay #2 6/24/15 A picture's worth 1,000 words Does a picture say more than a video? A writer both gains and loses leverage over the message of feeling he or she is trying to convey. Most humans would argue different things. Some would say they conceive more from a picture because of their ability to use their imagination and challenge themselves to a greater level. Others would argue that they appreciate more from a video because they are left without any questions about what is happening during that moment in time because of the visual confirmation. In Edward Said's essay States, Said uses photos that add feeling and depth to portray the message of stereotyped Palestinians. The quote from States explains how photos can be very significant in some cases, "Identity– who we are, where we come from, what we are– is difficult to maintain in exile. Most other people take their identity for granted. Not the Palestinian, who is required to show proofs of identity more or less constantly. It is not only that we are regarded as terrorists, but that our existence as native Arab inhabitants of Palestine, with primordial rights there (and not elsewhere), is either denied or challenged" (Said 546). As discussed above, in some cases, photos can be more necessary than text. In States there is an image of an unknown boy at a Gaza refugee camp wearing a Grease shirt (Said, 552). This image communicates what might take many pages of description. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Summary Of My Brother Sam Is Dead In the book my Brother Sam is Dead, by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, I noticed a strong theme; how war divides individuals, families, communities, and countries. This book takes place during the Revolutionary War, and Tim Meeker, the narrator, has a Father who is a Loyalist and a brother, Sam, who is a Patriot. Sam goes off to fight for the Patriots, and hard times come because of the war . When Father and Tim are coming back from Verplancks' Point, Father gets kidnapped by cow–boys. He is then killed in a British prison ship. Sam is killed because he is taken in as cattle thief, which he really wasn't. He is then executed. The Meeker family is then torn up because of the war, with half of the family dead. I will show you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of them was Tim, whose brother was a Patriot and whose Father was a Loyalist. A few examples are: on page 114, Tim and Father have a conversation that shows they are depending on the British side, for protection against the Patriots. This happens after they were attacked by the Patriots, and the Loyalists rescued them. Tim is on the Loyalists side because of how they rescued him, and also because he is depending on them. Another example is right after Tim saw Ned's head chopped off. Tim decides he doesn't feel like being a Tory anymore. Tim throws up all over himself when he sees Ned killed, and as he says, "It was a long time before I realized I was soaked with cold sweat and crying," which shows he doesn't like any violence, and that war was tearing him up (page 145). As well as on Page 167, when Tim says, "...I decided that I wasn't going to be on anyone's side anymore: neither of them was right." That shows that war divides individuals because after going back and forth for a while, Tim finally decided he wasn't going to be on any side in the war anymore, because neither side was right. From the examples above, you can see Tim vacillating between Patriots and Loyalist; torn by war, as well as torn by family because of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The tavern is not split up War impacts many things; one of the topics that war impacts is individuals. Tim is torn by war because on pg. 127, Tim says, "Having father gone was strange. • 27. Essay On My Brother Sam Is Dead War: The Real Price To Be Paid "In war the dead pay the debts for the living," (Collier and Collier 167). The real cost of war is so great that the thought of paying the price is rather unfathomable. In My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier we get a glimpse into the lives of not only the Meekers but the people of their town and we observe the price they paid for one of the biggest and most powerful wars of our American history, The American Revolution. In this historical fiction, Tim Meeker must choose whether he wants to be a loyal subject to the king of England or a rebellious and freedom yearning American Patriot like his role model and brother, Sam Meeker. In My Brother Sam Is Dead by Collier and Collier talk about how people of all ages fought in the war. "Yale students did rush away to get weapons and join the war in 1775." (Collier and Collier 214). Sam was one of those Yale students who went to fight and among him, as explained in the previous quote, were many others. Although Sam thought highly of leaving school to fight Eliphalet Meeker felt otherwise. Eliphalet Meeker says to Sam, "Now take off that uniform and go back to your studies." We also see a clash of generations with the adults in Redding who are also against war. Mr. Beach, the Pastor of the Anglican church in Redding, says, "God meant man to obey. He meant children to obey their fathers, he meant men to obey their kings." The constant argument between the generations is whether or not the younger generations should even have any input when it came to the war. This constant clash of generations was not only causing issues between Loyalists and Patriots but also causing problems between the generations that comprise each side. In My Brother Sam Is Dead by Collier and Collier the general argument between Eliphalet and Sam has to do with Sam ideals of war and Eliphalet's realities of war. Sam says, "It's not the money, it's the principle." (Collier and Collier 21). Sam fights for his principle of freedom and the glory of war. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"99 Red Balloons" tells about a war and the lyrics relate to Susannah (Mother), Life (Father), Sam, and Tim Meeker along with Betsey Read. "Get Up" relates to Sam specifically because he is so confident he won't fail. "Wavin' Flag" relates mainly to Sam again, but also relates to Tim. "99 Red Balloons" (originally in German with the name of "99 Luftballons" ) relates to My Brother Sam is Dead in some of the lyrics. One of the lines "There's something here from somewhere else" relates to My Brother Sam is Dead because that is how Sam feels about the British. He thinks that they don't belong in the colonies, the should stay in Britain. Another line: "Opens up one eager eye" shows how eager Sam is for war; he wants to fight. • 33. Neutrality In My Brother Sam Is Dead The American Revolution was a war of principles fought by Loyalists and Patriots. However, Loyalists believed in neutrality, peace, and no brutality or treason. Therefore, Patriots believed in freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, and the right to break away from the British government. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead created by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, a family disputes over which side is right. James and Christopher Collier use the ironies of Life, Jerry, and Sam's death to induce Tim's decision of neutrality. Firstly, Life's death contributes to Tim's reasons to be neutral. For an instance, Tim finds out that father was taken by cowboys on the way back from Verplanks Point. " In June of that year, 1777, we found out that father was dead.""...it wasn't a Rebel prison, ship it was a British one"(164). Tim expects father would die because the cowboys had already attacked him for cattle and he was a Loyalist. Tim discovers that loyalty is valued in the British side. He thinks that why should he be loyal to a side that's dishonest. Tim chooses neutrality because the Loyalists are deceptive, brutal, and aren't true to their word. • 35. James Lincoln Collier's My Brother Sam Is Dead Truly believing in something means that you are willing to stand up for it and risk your life or suffer consequences because of it. In James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier's My Brother Sam is Dead, Sam Meeker did just that. It showed a story where even though standing up for something that you believe leads to other conflicts, it's worth it if you truly believe in it. During the American Revolution, people would risk their lives for what they believed in specifically freedom, and they would be willing to suffer the consequences of their actions. This book takes place in a time period where it was quite common for young men to join the army and the fight for freedom. In an argument between Father and Sam, Sam brings up, "Sir, it's worth dying to be free." This statement is showing how Sam feels about freedom. Even though Sam believes it, didn't mean that others did. Sam's father hadn't agreed with him, which sparked a bigger argument. The argument had created a very tense relationship between Sam and Father, but Sam had stood up for what he believed even though others around him didn't agree. It showed that even though he knew ... • 37. Symbolism In My Brother Sam Is Dead "It's a funny thing. You'd think that if there was a war going on in your own country, it would make your life different." (Collier 38) Tim, the protagonist, is trying to live an ordinary life during time of the Revolutionary War as he works on his family's tavern. However, his brother Sam wants to join the Rebel Army and wants to defeat the British, otherwise known as the Loyalists who Sam and Tim's father support as they support the king. In My Brother Sam Is Dead the author's James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier use the Brown Bess to symbolize power and authority. Throughout the story, the brothers use father getting hurt because the soldiers think that father has the gun to link to show power. For example in the text it states, "The officer looked at father, considering. Finally he said, 'I don't believe you.' He raised the sword. I gasped and the officer whipped the flat side of the blade across Father's face." (Collier 51) Here, father getting sliced shows that father was trying to be honest and saying that he doesn't have the gun because he knows that Sam has it and took it. Also, " I'm telling you the truth my son ran off to your army and took my gun. We have no weapons here but butcher knives." ( Collier 51) This textual evidence shows that the officer wanted the gun and thought that father was lying about that he didn't have the gun but the author thought he had the gun. Since the police thought father was lying so he took the knife and sliced father. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Silent Sam is a memorial in the middle of the University of North Carolina's campus built to honor students who left school and fought in the Civil War. The Civil War was a war between the northern and southern states fought over slavery. Many students now think that the statue is offensive because the people that it honors fought for the South and supported slavery. Silent Sam was erected in 1913 for 321 UNC students who fought in the Civil War. It's called Silent Sam because he has no ammunition so he's quiet and then just Sam. The university still had classes during the war.The statue faces North as if it's fighting for the confederates. Some students vandalized it because they thought that it was offencive and shouldn't be there. In conclusion The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says this is an important topic about something bad that happened about the topic. On the statue 's 100th birthday there was controversy. They want U.N.C. to remove Silent Sam from the campus. They think that it's rude to the Northerners from the war and stuff. The U.N.C. students get mad because it's supposed to be about state movements not slavery. The statue is for students who died in the war and that seems to slip some students minds. These students changed the campus today they made an impact on UNC.In conclusion Kevin says that this an important topic And that students ... The years leading up to World War II and the dropping of the atomic bombs were hectic and disordered, from the rise of Hitler in 1933, U.S. isolationism in 1934, to the death of U.S. President Roosevelt. The war showed no signs of ending and the security and freedom of nations around the world were in danger. Order was nowhere to be found, and the decision to even consider using the atomic bomb was unpreventable. Any sane government would have surrendered after Iwo Jima, a deadly battle where 27,000 Japanese fought against 70,000 U.S marines...an inevitable loss for Japan. Nonetheless, the power of the bomb had convinced the world of its horror it even amazed its inventors. The surrender of Japan was not the only thing that compelled the use of the bombs. President Truman knew that they would have eventually given in, but he had them dropped anyway "as a way of scaring the Communist Soviet Union into peaceful post–war behavior" (Collier, 81). The bomb impressed them and stopped them from asking for joint occupation of Japan. This was a major feat because that is the major reason why Russia joined the war hastily in 1945 in the first place. They sensed a victory for the U.S and perhaps the spoils of war for themselves. The Allies agreed to conditional surrender in order to save the lives of thousands of Japanese and Americans. • 43. Character Analysis: My Brother Sam Is Dead War: Is It Really Worth It? 223 years ago, an innocent, ten–year–old boy died on a prison ship. His name was Jerry Sanford and he lived with Captain Starr, a local Patriot. The day Jerry was captured, British troops raided the only home he had ever known and killed several of his friends including his guardian, Daniel Starr. In My Brother Sam Is Dead, one of Jerry's friends was a boy named Tim Meeker. He was not killed the day of the attack on Starr's house, but witnessed the deaths from behind a rock. In the story, Tim has a brother: Samuel Meeker. He was a Patriot soldier fighting in the American Revolution for freedom, rights, and glory. Sam and Tim's parents, however, were loyal to the British Crown and disapproved of their son fighting with the rebels. In My Brother Sam Is Dead, although both sides of the war are shown, authors James and Christopher Collier ultimately argue that war is futile. One way the authors argue against war is how they show examples of family division. A major conflict in the Meeker family was Mr. Meeker being loyal to the British King and Sam fighting as a patriot soldier in the war. This resulted in Tim being caught in the middle, questioning which side of the war he should support. Either choice, he decided, would be a disappointment to at least one of his family members. "...between worrying about that and being confused over which side was right I couldn't concentrate on church much" (Collier and Collier 29). The tension between Mr. ... For example, at the time of the Revolutionary War, people had to choose between liberty or life. When the colonies decided to break away from the tyrannical rule of King George the Third, sides had to be chosen. The Patriots, who wanted independence, fought for justice and liberation while the Loyalists wished to stand with Britain. Some chose not to stand on either side and remained neutral. Through threats and violent attacks, people were forced to choose a side. In the novel My Brother Sam Is Dead, it describes the different viewpoints and decisions of a character who decides to stay neutral in the war. The ironic deaths of Ned, Life, and Sam induces Tim to be neutral in the war. The irony of Ned's death influences Tim to be nonbelligerent. Armstrong formed a studio band in 1925 called the Hot Five. The band included Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory, John St. Cyr, Lil Armstrong, and himself. These recordings were some of the most famous made by Armstrong, including "Mandy Make Up Your Mind" and "Money Blues" (Bergreen 96). A year later the Hot Five made their only public appearance at the Chicago Coliseum. The Chicago Defender spoke of "Louis Armstrong, the miracle with steel lips," (Boujut 27). For the next few years Armstrong recorded with the Hot Five and played with other musicians in New York and Chicago. He then traveled to California, in July of 1930, where he starred in his first film, Flame. Only after he had been in California for a few weeks he was arrested at a nightclub for the possession of marijuana. The incident obviously caused a lot of controversy across the world. The sentence, six months in prison, was suspended after only three days. Mainly due to Armstrong's addiction to marijuana, Lil separated from him and they no longer ... The Pros And Cons Of The Pinckney Plan "Madison's attacks on Pinckney's claims to authorship of at least parts of the Constitution were followed up by his admirers and subsequent generations of scholars. Pinckney, of course, was dead and could not defend himself." This quote defines how James Madison sought to take greater credit for the Pinckney Plan, which was created by Charles Pinckney of South Carolina. Charles Pinckney claimed to have laid the foundation for the U.S. Constitution (through the Pinckney Plan), which formed a bicameral legislative organization of the future government that included a Senate and House. Historically, Pinckney claimed to be the youngest delegate at the Constitutional Conventions (later proven to not be true), yet Madison hid his notes of the Pinckney ... Martin walked out of the Constitutional Convention due to what he felt was the powerful structure of the new national government, These beliefs were dominated by his opposition to the Virginia Plan, since it supported federal authority over state authority. This historical perspective defines how some members, such as martin , were vehemently opposed to federalism, and that eventually left the Constitutional Convention due to a radical opposition to the new national government. The principle of state autonomy was a predominant argument by states, which were fearful of another form of tyrannical government being formed by the federalists. He could hear music from outside is house when he woke up and when he went to bed. It is recorded that Louis did attend school at the Fisk school where he learned to read and write. How long he attended this school is another mystery. One fact we do know about Louis is that he was arrested on New Years Eve 1912 for shooting a gun. Louis was around eleven at the time, and this was a very serious offense. He was sent to the Coloreds Waif House a reform school on the out skirts of New Orleans. Here Louis was introduced to organized music in the form of the school band. The school band was run by Captain Joseph Jones in a military fashion that was extremely strict. This is where Louis's life changed from delinquent to a disciplined young man this was also when Louis was introduced to playing a musical instrument. The teacher, Professor Pete Davis, first had reservations of letting Louis play in the school's brass band because he thought Louis was a bad kid. Finally Louis was let into the band, and received his first formal training on an instrument. More importantly than the music training Louis received from Professor Davis were the real life ... • 71. My Brother Sam Is Dead By James Lincoln Collier My Brother Sam Is Dead is a historical fiction novel written by the Collier brothers, James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. This book was written for children from grades 6 to 12. Despite the fact that I am often drawn to historical fiction books, this one I found to be rather dull and boring for a few reasons. Set in the Revolutionary War Era, this novel tells the story of the Meeker family. In the town of Redding Ridge, Connecticut, most are loyal to King George. But there are a few Patriots in the midst, and these differing views are what began to break families apart and turn former friends and neighbors into enemies. The Meekers are no different, which is what the younger son, Tim, realizes as his big brother Sam goes off to fight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Overall, the essay is extremely relatable to many readers, including myself. Collier does a wonderful job at relating his point to his readers. The explanation of the anxiety and depression that he had experienced was descriptive. Also, the explanation was easy to picture and feel in my mind. • 77. Sir Its Worth Dying To Be Free Analysis Tim Meeker concludes the epilogue with," But somehow, even fifty years later, I keep thinking that there might have been another way, besides war, to achieve the same end" (Collier and Collier 211). Fifty years after the war, Meeker reflects on his life during the Revolutionary War with Britain and the American colonies. He has been torn between the sides of war, fought with family, experienced deaths of loved ones, and other conflicts the war has brought him. Authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier express Meeker's troubles and thoughts along with lessons that the war has taught him. Tim learned from the way war affected him that war is futile.
