Recognized as a social science research institute by the department of Scientific and Industrial
Research, Government of India, IFMR is approved as an institution of national importance by the Ministry of
Finance. Faculty members at IFMR have worked and consulted with both national and international organizations.
Students too are involved in these projects, ensuring continuous interaction with industry. IFMR is an approved
institutionbythe University of Madrasfor pursuinga Ph. D. degree in Finance and Economics.
IFMR has close ties with IIBF and MMA, and research collaboration with the London School of
Economics. IFMR has also recently entered into a comprehensive three year partnership with the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) to redesign its entire approach towards teaching and research in order to offer a
world class curriculum to the students. We have about 40 students from the Kennedy School of Government,
Harvard Business School, Sloan School of Management, Yale University etc., pursuing close to 20 research projects
therebycreating a very stimulatingacademic environmenton campus.

Courses offered at IFMR
The Post Graduate Diploma in Management is a two year full time course that offers
specializations in Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and IT/ Operations. All the courses are designed in
a way that enables students to learn from each other’s diverse perspectives through discussions and by
questioning key assumptions in solving issues. With courses on Financing, Investment and Risk
Management, Derivatives, Services Marketing, Sales and Distribution Management, Supply Chain
Management, Financial Technology, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management, Strategic HRM,
Training & Development, Compensation Management and Cross Cultural Relations, the institute prepares
its students thoroughlyfor any role in their chosen specializations.
PGDM-Financial Engineering at IFMR is a unique course which emphasizes the
application of quantitative techniques to solving problems in finance. The students are taught courses in
Asset Pricing, Econometrics, Stochastic Calculus, Financial Derivatives, Fixed Income Derivatives, and
Insurance Mathematics. The financial engineers who graduate from this course will be able to design
sophisticated derivative products, model their cash flows, price them accurately using rigorous
mathematical and computational tools, trade and manage the risk arising from such products. The students
can apply these skill sets across a wide range of financial functions that range from investment banking,
securities trading, quantitative modeling, risk management, financial consulting to catastrophic insurance
andappliedresearch.
This course equips the graduates with the fundamental theoretical framework,
analytical techniques and management skills required to work in the field of Development Finance. This
enables him/her to perceive the background, understand existing scenario, assess impacts and so be able
to undertake development projects at both Public and private level. The design and execution of the
course draws inputs from various research centers housed at IFMR and the students therefore get a
practical exposure to the nuances and implementation methods. Thus, they could make meaningful
contribution to areas such as Microfinance, Capital Management, Infrastructure financing, Civil Society,
Policy, Partnerships, etc. Additional exposure to general management courses allows the graduates to
customize their skill sets according to their interests.

From the Course Director’s Desk
In the PGDM program, the focus is on providing a good grounding on managerial thinking, analytical problem
solving, integrated business perspective of the multiple functional disciplines which include economics, accounting, corporate
finance, marketing quantitative methods, information technology and decision sciences. Students are also exposed to market
research, both qualitative and quantitative which helps them during the course and also later on in the real time setup. The
rigorous curriculum, with both theoretical and practical applications of concepts, delivered through a blend of lectures, case
studies and activities, by a team of dedicated multi-disciplinary faculty, ensures better internalization of concepts and develop a
managerial orientation. Computing skills are a natural by-product of the pedagogy due to the heavy emphasis on information
technology based delivery and practice. Laptops are an integral part of the educational tool kit.
Another underlying highlight of the program is the project mode learning and development of social
sensitivity. IFMR has tied up with Banyan, an NGO working in the social development space. Students, besides being exposed to
activities ofsocial development nature like mental health for the poor and downtrodden women; undertake a specific project which
involves application of management principles. In addition, the students are exposed to a number of seminars, given by various
visiting international faculty and industry experts, on a wide variety of topics related to management and related disciplines. The
idea is to develop a holistic perspective and appreciation in the students.

One doesn't have to look beyond the current crisis in global financial markets to appreciate the fact that the landscape of finance has
changed for good. The spotlight has been firmly turned back on the most abused four-letter word in finance: risk.
It would be naive to assume that the Indian economy is immune to such problems. Over the past one year, a number of corporates
have reported huge losses from trading in a class of financial products called derivatives. These have come in the backdrop of the explosive
growth of the Indian financial markets.
These developments, both on the global and the domestic front, have created a strong demand for financial engineers who can
understand these sophisticated products, model their cash-flows, price them accurately (using rigorous mathematical and computational
tools), trade and manage the risk arising from such products. This demand stems from a wide spectrum of financial functions - investment
banking, securities trading, quantitative modeling, risk management, financial consulting, catastrophic insurance and applied research.
The key question that needs to be addressed is: How equipped are today's students of management to comprehend the exciting (albeit
demanding) changes taking place in the world of finance? In 2005, we at IFMR decided to be proactive and offered a one-year program in
quantitative finance. This course was re-launched as a AICTE-approved two-year PGDM-Financial Engineering in 2007. The unique curriculum
emphasizes on application of quantitative techniques to problems in finance. These courses are taught by some of the finest finance faculty in
the country, also associated with the Center for Advanced Financial Studies (CAFS) at IFMR.
Now, to the actual proof of the pudding: we take great pride in saying that our alumni are pursuing highly successful careers. They
are presently working in well-reputed banks such as Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, Barclays, World Bank, ICICI Bank and other leading
trading/consulting houses. Some of our former students are also currently pursuing their higher studies from leading universities such as
Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, New York University (NYU)etc.

This program – the first of its kind - has evolved as a result of continued research carried out at IFMR.
There is a need to design mechanisms that would make deliverables reach the target group more efficiently. Satisfying this need
ensures successful implementation of development projects undertaken by government and non-government organizations. This
particular course aims at doing that- as to how to make India a better place to live in. As Professor Amartya Sen would put
it, “Development is not only about the growth of GNP per head, but also about the expansion of human freedom and dignity”.
Aimed at implementing classroom learning experience, this course allows students to associate
themselves with the research centers housed at IFMR that work with a focused end objective of improving the well being of the
poor. We have also entered into an agreement with “BANYAN” – an NGO. The faculty members handling this course are drawn not
only from IFMR but also from the research centers, various NGOs and bankers involved in microfinance.
Having gone through this course, the students will be able to showcase their skills in areas related to
microfinance, supply chain and agriculture, rural corporate finance, cooperative management , NGO management and other allied
fields in development.

IFMR Trust helps IFMR B school with projects, placement and action learning opportunities. IFMR Trust is a
private trust whose mission is to ensure that every individual and every enterprise in India has complete access to financial
services. This mission can be achieved only through systemic changes in the Indian financial system. Our vision of the financial
system comprises three components:
1. Frontlineprovision ofhigh-qualityand adequatefinancialservices
India is a vast and diverse country, with a large rural population. It is unrealistic to expect a few national
institutions to have the reach to provide financial services to every individual and every enterprise -- the cost-to-serve would
be extremely high, and there would be huge information gaps. We believe it is necessary to have a number of permanent,
localand autonomous entities that will serve as the last mile for financialintermediation.
2. Orderlytransfer of risk
However, local entities would typically be thinly capitalised and concentrated regionally. If their level of activity
and outreach is determined only by the extent of direct capital on their books, the entities are doomed to slow rates of growth.
We believe scale can be engineered if we combine the local footprint of these entities with the ability of well-capitalised financial
institutions to manage risk. Orderly transfer of risk between local entities and larger financial institutions and markets would
address informationasymmetryas well as the moralhazards inherentin this multi-tier design.
3. Holdingof risk by well-capitalised diversified entities
If local providers of financial services hold all the risks locally, clients will be greatly exposed to local and regional
shocks, such as natural disasters and crop failure. They will not get the security and liquidity of savings and insurance that can be
offered by large, diversified entities. A stable and inclusive financial system should therefore have mechanisms that facilitate the
warehousingofriskby well-capitalised and diversified entities that have the ability to managerisk efficiently.
Working with several partners, we seek to advocate changes in the Indian financial system that would enable
development of the above three components. Our advocacy effort is strengthened by research to enhance our understanding of
the Indian financial system, as well as operations in areas where, despite repeated attempts, the Indian financial system has failed
to evolve effective models, and the need for demonstrated success is high.
Consistentwith the vision outlined above, we are directly incubatingthree operating models,through three ventures:
• Through IFMRHoldings we are developingworking prototypes of localised, high-qualityentities to providefinancial
services in remote parts of rural India. Theseentities are called Kshetriya Gramin Financial Services (KGFS) companies.
• Through IFMRAdvisoryServices we are launchinga private equity fund, the Network Enterprises Fund, to eliminate
systemicrisk and make smallrural enterprises 'financeable'bylocal banks/financialinstitutions.
• Through IFMRCapital we are creating a financialintermediarythat will ensureorderlytransfer of risk between the
originators and aggregators of risk.
IFMRTrust Advocacy Unit (ITAU) spearheads our advocacyefforts, which are strengthened by experiences from the other three
ventures. We bring to our efforts expertisein the design, delivery and scaling of financialservices and a deep understandingof
mainstream markets. Manyofour efforts are guided by practical insights gained from action-research conducted at specialised

The small enterprise sector plays a significant role in the economy through employment
generation, developing entrepreneurial skills and contribution to export earnings. Yet, the financial and non-financial
problems faced by them inhibit their growth. The SEFC conducts and facilitates systematic, rigorous research projects
and offers advanced financial training courses for the Indian banking sector. This helps policy makers, financial
institutions and entrepreneurs to alleviate finance, management and labor market constraints that impede
productivity.

CIRM focuses on developing product capabilities for insurance and other risk mitigating instruments

J-PAL South Asia at IFMR seeks to improve the effectiveness of poverty programs in South Asia by

trained over 15,000 senior to middle-level executives from the private and public sector, government, banks
andinstitutionsengaged in financialservices, both nationalandinternational.

MoU with BALM
Additionally the BALM will offer programs to other partners of the IFMR, including its commitment
towardscivil servants and officers engaged in financialservice organizationsanddevelopmentorganizations.
During this period of collaboration, faculty nominees of the BALM will be a part of the expert group
within IFMR to work with the various centers of excellence within and associated with IFMR and the IFMR
Trust. BALM will also collaborate with the IFMR faculty to design the courses and modules for the MBA
program.
The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) was recently
established for the purpose of aiding the creation of highly competent and
qualified human resources in the sector. An MoU has been signed between
IFMR and BALM under which BALM will offer short-term and long-term
training programs to the MBA students of IFMR. This would also include an
orientationtoall first year students at the time of joining.
NCDEX Trading Floor
IFMR and NCDEX have set up a dedicated Centre at IFMR for
research and knowledge management in the area of commodity
markets and derivatives.
The key objectives and activities of the Centre will be to
widen and improve the understanding of commodity markets and
deepenand improve its functioningthrough:
• Engagingin and sponsoring multidisciplinaryresearch
• Contributingtothe developmentof policy formulation, analysis,and advocacy
• Disseminatinginformationon commodities, products, services, and acting as a clearing house for information
andmarket intelligenceinthe commodities and relatedsectors

Abhyudaya – the Rising Sun, symbolizes hope and a mark of all beginnings.
Every year, IFMR pays tribute to this spirit, in its annual national level
business fest. This student initiated event brings together talent from
across the country for two days of intense competition. Unlike other B-
Fests, the events, lectures and competitions in Abhyudaya are specially
designedto capture the current trends and realities of the business world.
The aim is to create value for the sponsors and a rich learning experience for all participants.
Abhyudaya celebrates acumen, intellect, talent, perseverance and awards the magnates of tomorrow.
Organizing the fest in close association with the industry members and sponsors contributes to the learning
experience at IFMR making it richer and complete.

The Finance Club: The club conducts a plethora of events like stock simulation
games, presentations, guest lectures and quizzes all through the year, where
students applytheir theoreticallearningin practicalsituations.
The Marketing Club: The club actively organizes activities that develop
marketing skills and orient the students in making sound decisions. The club
believes that the events including quizzes and live projects with leading
companieswill give students the flair for marketing.
The HR Club: The aim is to create a culture of open sharing of ideas and better

The IT Club: The club aims to develop a passion for IT and IT related services in

The Creativity Club: The 7th Sense has come into being to provide a medium for

The Entrepreneurship club: This club is an initiative taken to enable interaction
of the minds that cherish the entrepreneurial spirit in themselves. It is a forum to
