Social Role And Social Roles
Everybody in the world belongs to a subcultural group (people that come together that seek out
others sharing similar ideas or views) or plays a social role in it. Playing in a social role, as
individuals, we act in certain situations differently, such as in a work place, home, or around your
peer groups. I believe it's a real occurrence that a lot of people deal with daily. The ideology of a
subculture group or the social roles you play forms by separating or belonging in it and forming
personal norms, sanctions, material objects, symbols, language patterns, and social institutions. Such
as me being an employee (sales associate) at Payless and being a younger sister to an older brother
which have similar ways but they also have a few differences.
To begin with, when it comes to working for an economic institution I play a certain social role
when being a sales associate. I wouldn't act the same way at my job like I do with my family
members or my friends such as clowning around, teasing, cursing, or pulling pranks on each other.
In my job description there are norms and sanctions that I need to follow, breathe, and live by them.
I'm responsible for following the Company's safety and environmental laws, regulations, and
procedures at work. For instance, always come in on time (unless you call in), follow the safety
policies for ourselves and customers such as prevention of accidents removing things that can cause
a fall or slip such as a 3 or 8 step ladder's or carts (children might mistake it as a toy), making sure
boxes on top of the rack shelves are less than 8 inches high (not in the way for sprinkles or falling
over), making sure each aisle is clean (nobody's going to come into a dirty store), putting shoes in
their right particular areas and sizes from kids on the left hand side, women's in the middle, and the
men's on the right hand side and straight across the back of the store. In addition, to safety reasons in
work wear we can wear almost about anything but must be comfortable like business wear or casual
(no jeans, open back sandals/heels, and must be knee length) and have a Payless store tag always,
also when it comes to lifting boxes we must always wear a black back support belt while lifting.

Positive Role In Social Work
Social work is a practice based profession and academic discipline focusing on the principles of
social justice, human rights and equality and diversity (International Federation of Social Workers
(IFSW), 2014). Furthermore, social work is a complex discipline which is underpinned by theories
grounded in social science, humanities and indigenous knowledge (IFSW, 2014). Social work has
been embedded into society as a fundamental aspect of planning person centred care for vulnerable
groups (Dowling et al, 2006). There are many schools of thought which attempt to define what
constitutes a vulnerable group within society. Richardson et al (2015) states that vulnerability arises
within those individuals who need support to address the challenges that affect their quality of life.
Poverty, extremes of age, disability, mental or physical health status and ethnicity all have the
potential to contribute to vulnerability and social exclusion of the group or individual (Joseph
Rowntree Foundation, 2017). In particular, the elderly and youths leaving care are recognised as
having multiple needs and face adversity integrating wholly into society. It is the role of the social
worker to assess, plan, intervene, implement and evaluate the care for these groups and individuals
(Horner, 2009)).
Social workers play a vital role within society in supporting such people regardless of their
background. They are not only there to protect people from abuse but to also help enable individuals

Female And Female Roles And Social Factors
Until the 1970s, "sex was known as or related to being a male or either a female. It was also referred
as the sex roles, sex differences or sex changer operation. People saw gender as being masculine and
feminine in certain cultures, like the French and Spanish. Now people see sex in two ways, either in
the biological way or the social factors. Johnson explains the differences between the biological way
and the social factors and the meaning of a male and female has changed over time and differ by
culture. Female and male roles was established by cultural and biological factors by people around
the world. It also has to do with the way people were brought up by parents and society as a whole.
An early feminist named Mary Wollstonecraft wrote a treatise called "Vindication of the Rights of
Woman." She wrote this arguing that woman and men are basically equal. They may be different
biologically, but when it comes to the roles of each one they are the same. She also stated that the
roles of society was brought on by society and they aren't biologically determined (Ojeda 14).
Gender has played a role in my life in so many ways. I was always told that by older woman and
some males that "girls are supposed to be seen, not heard." I always wondered what that meant until
I got to a certain age. They meant that females are supposed to be loving, caring, and quiet and
shouldn't draw attention to themselves. I was always taught in my history classes that males and
females have

The Role of Witchcraft in the Social Order
The newest generation in western society is being partially raised by films, literature, and music.
Pop culture is taking a bigger and bigger role in the upbringing of today's children. Images like
Harry Potter flying on his broomstick during a game of quidditch, or the old lady from Brave
creating potions. To the majority of Western Society, these situations are used for entertainment
purposes, but many tribes and villages still believe in the power of witchcraft and see it as an
enormous threat. Weather witchcraft is still prevalent for religious reasons, old school beliefs, or
economic motives, the fact still remains that it is used to show order and give power to those who
are willing to give up a life to take it. With modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and
economic status, the blame was often put of them regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar,
1993:317). Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in
society (Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring
down those who are on the higher economic and social ladder. This can be seen majorly in the
Badyaranke tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that
showed that those who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of
summoning the spirit of Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy crops) and preforming
witchcraft on their crops to gain wealth in the community (Simmons, 1980:455). In both of these
societies it is evident that the community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft.
Scapegoat
It is not rare that a community often needs a way to explain unexplainable occurrences. Humans in
western society always look for a science based logical reason to legitimize a situation. While this is
a common human trait, the science aspect can be lost on those nations that are geared more towards
religious of spiritual beliefs. Both the Badyaranke tribe and people of Malta during the seventeenth
century used

Social Construction Of Gender Roles Essay
Gender roles are personality traits, mannerisms, interests, attitudes, and behaviors that are regarded
as either "male" or "female" by a person's culture. It has been proven that both genetics and
environment influence the development of gender roles; they are mostly taught while growing up.
However, they may prevent people from conforming to their true gender identities. In fact, if we no
longer assigned genders, then our society would change to be more inclusive. This does not mean
that traditional roles are bad, but more research is needed to discover the influences of genetics and
environment on individual gender roles and in society. Until then, these roles are stopping our
society from developing into a more equal and open minded place. ... Show more content on

Even though the majority of women don't stay at home all day, the still have some roles that are
expected of them. They are expected to primarily take care of the children, and make sure the house
is tidy. Social arrangements, such as dinner with friends, are likely to be managed by the wife.
Wives are more likely to initiate discussions about planned vacations. If the kids need to be driven
to activities, it is usually the mother who does the driving. She is also likely to be the one buying
clothes for them. But men also have standards too. They're often in charge of fixing up things in the
house or tuning up the car. Or if someone tosses a ball around with the kids, it is likely to be the
father. Most of these little actions and behaviors aren't done on purpose, they're just habits. The
husband might take out the garbage, carry packages into the house or the grill master. The wife
might dress the kids, make plans, and call family members. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it
shows how deeply ingrained these expectations

Social Construct on Gender Roles Social constructs are ideas that are created by societies that are
not representations of reality. Usually ideas that are socially constructed are seen as the norm
because they have prevailed within societies for several years. These ideas have developed as
generations have passed them on and as societies have become more liberal. Social constructs can
range from various topics but, in gender roles social constructs have caused a significant impact
because these ideas dictate what is wrong and what is right for men and women to do. The rules that
societies have created for each gender have been modified over the years, but they have affected the
decisions that each person makes and has led to disagreements when something out of the norm is
done. The reason that some of these ideas have changed over time is because family dynamics have
changed, education is more accessible and societies have become more advanced. As societies and
communities developed they began to transform family dynamics. The socially constructed idea of
gender that was originally created for the family was that the men had to work and the women had
to stay at home and take care of household chores. These ideas were constructed base on past
societies and communities but in today's societies it is an idea that happens but rarely because
societies today are constructed differently. According to the

Essay on The Social Construction of Gender Roles
The Social Construction of Gender Roles Gender or sex roles are the expected patterns of behavior
assumed to follow from a person's sex. Gender roles are not natural. They are formed by and vary
within society, culture, geographic location, politics and time. There is a strong relationship between
the social construction of gender and compulsory heterosexuality. People are programmed into
certain gender roles and social categories through socialization and interaction with others.
Expectations about appropriate gender role characteristics and sexual behavior have evolved
throughout history, especially for women. In the 1700's and 1800's, the men's role included earning

They were paid considerably less than men and had the dual role of housewife.
In 1920, women won the right to vote and they were gradually moving into the male–dominated
labor force, but gender roles were not changing much. Due to the World War II draft, many women
entered the labor force and even helped run the country. Upon the return of the veterans, many
women were forced back into their homes. However, the opportunities for women were broadening
and some women began making careers for themselves outside of the home. The 1960's saw many
feminist movements and in 1963 the Equal Pay Act was passed by Congress which enticed more
women to get out of the house and into better careers.
Men had difficulties accepting and adjusting to changes in women's roles. They had to adjust to
having women around them at their job sites and some felt that women were filling positions that an
unemployed man should have been given. Men also felt that the traditional male role as provider
was being threatened, so some men did not allow their wives to enter the labor force. Most men,
however, have gradually accepted women in the career world. Today, men are even taking on roles
that were once deemed 'female' like nursing, homemaking and teaching.
There are many social agents that cause the construction of gender roles. Parents and family are
important socialization agents in the gender role development of children. They have different
values and attitudes regarding male

The Role Of A Social Worker
The role of a social worker involves firstly obtaining a professional qualification at degree level set
out by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC), who sets educational standards and
regulates for social worker training. The social worker is an intricate part of society which supports
and works with vulnerable individuals, families, children and the wider community in order to
protect these individuals from harm, neglect and abuse. Assessment is core to social workers
practice. As a social worker, professional practice entails supporting and evaluating assessments of
need and risk continually, Walker and Beckett (2003). Social workers help individuals, families and
communities to make informed choices and understand their own resourcefulness in order to bring
about positive change to their lives. However, this can involve negotiating both complex and
challenging situations. In some cases the social worker is required to intervene where children are at
risk of harm from their parent or caregiver in a crisis child protection situation, the social worker
would be required to present facts to the courts in order to obtain a child protection order, (Section
47 of the Children's Act 1989). Ultimately the social worker must attempt to build positive
relationships in sometimes adverse situations with individuals whom may or may not wish to
cooperate, however, the social worker must where possible keep the family together. Assessments

George Babbitt's Characters And Conformist Social Roles
Secondly, the characters experience conformist social roles. George Babbitt conforms to the social
role of being a father and husband. In Babbitt's society it is expected for men to be the bread–winner
of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is experiencing
the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he can be. George
is out of love with his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he did not even love
her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest and a "good wife"
(Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or that they felt
obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them.
Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of George
leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. Hence, he is out of love it
leads him to temptation. Babbitt imagines a "fairy child" (Lewis 5). He uses the fairy child as his
escape form reality. He knows he cannot morally cheat on his wife, therefore he imagines a life
without her with other women. The first woman he imagines being with is McGoun (describe her
from the book). The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her from the book).
The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his wife could be like,
McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none of these things. Myra
has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads magazine, her children do not
pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is going through struggle of being
faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social role is his playing is such a burden
on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what people think of his scandalous ways.
While he is having this newfound revolution, Myra is also having her own revolution. She becomes
more lively and appears younger and George falls in love with her again. George discovers that he is

Gender Roles And Social Expectations
As a child, many of us enjoyed watching Disney movies to the point that we basically lived off of
those movies. In many Disney movies there were hidden aspects children mainly did not notice like
gender roles and social expectations. Even though children may not realize the social expectations
aspect incorporated into movies they still absorb those lessons like a sponge. They learn these
aspects by seeing them as role models, they have the desire to become that person. For an example,
during Halloween we see hundreds of little girls dressing up like their favorite princess. They see
these princesses as role models since little girls can relate them to by gender. Depending on what the
princess portrays in the movie determines the outcome if it is beneficial or flawed characteristics
that the child may take up. Like in early Disney movies the princesses were the damsel that were
saved by the prince but a different scenario is produced in Mulan. Mulan is a heroine and loved by
all of China but it didn't start out like that, the expectations developed. In the movie, the characters
and songs illustrated the expectations of a women and men that those expectations still exists in our
own society today.
In the beginning of Mulan, Fa Mulan is shown preparing to meet the matchmaker, writing womanly
qualities on her forearm. Those words still resonate in today's society. The words she wrote "quiet
and demure, graceful, polite, delicate, refined, poised..." These are womanly qualities

The Role Of A Social Worker
Introduction
Law has come to play a very important part in social work practice. It can be said that the
understanding of law underpins and provides duties and power, whilst understanding the statutory
legal requirements is essential for effective, fair, anti–discriminatory practice (Brammer 2007). Due
to the shear amount of laws and legislation that have been passed or updated over the last decade,
the role of the social worker, metaphorically speaking could be said to have become somewhat of a
chameleon, forever adapting to their legal environment, whilst trying hard to remain true to the
traditional values of the role of a social worker. It is this conflict between law and social work
values that will be analyzed in this paper. From looking at the values that underpin the modern day
social worker and then looking at some of the main legislation relating to adult services such as the
Mental Health Act 2007, the Community Care Act 1996, Mental Capacity Act 2005 the relationship
between these Acts' and how they sit with social work values will then be discussed.
1.1 The Key Values and Ethics of the Social Worker
Values and ethics are sets of beliefs and principles that have an important role to play in terms of
providing guide to action, offering a framework for making sense of a given situation in practice,
providing a yardstick by which to judge the appropriateness of a given action whilst also sustaining
a social worker through difficult, discouraging times (Thompson

Are Gender Roles A Social Construct Essay
I am a strong believer that gender roles are a social construct. However, gender identity is not.
Therefore, it is very important to know the difference. Gender roles are defined as "theoretical
constructs involving of social and behavioral norms that are widely considered to be socially
appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. The perception of gender roles includes attitudes,
actions, and personality traits associated with a particular gender within that culture. Gender roles
are predominantly considered within a family context as well as within society in general". I believe
that gender roles and gender expression are social constructs. There is almost nothing that is
intrinsically male or female and merely things that are coded as male or female by the culture we

A woman is no less a woman when she possesses traditionally masculine qualities and a man is no
less a man when he possesses traditionally feminine qualities. Gender roles are outdated in modern
society and only cast a negative light on those who don't adhere to them. They no longer hold
ground in our society. Household chores are not gendered. There is no reason to believe that they
are, just because a certain group of people of one gender have been forced to occupy those roles for
years, it doesn't mean the activity is or should be gendered. Women are not better at household
things and men are not better at non household things. Everyone needs to learn to do what they need
to do to survive. If someone has a skill that does not stereotypically conform to their gender, they
should be able to use that skill without feeling like society is against them. Why let a useful skill go
to waste? It is true that gender roles are not always bad or oppressive even though they still are
expectations and obligations placed by

The Role Of Macro Social Work
Macro social work is the process of investigating a large scale of social problems and developing
and implementing social interventions meant to create positive change at community, state, and
national levels. The use of social practices such as research, program development, community–
based interventions, advocacy, policy analysis, and administration are used to identify and
implement change needed for addressing and improving large scale social issues. Macro social
workers investigate social issues by conducting research, data methods, and direct practice. Some
macro social workers are used to develop programs for certain communities or specific
demographics among these communities. Another important role of macro social work is advocacy.
At a macro level, advocating for disadvantaged populations could be lobbying for changes at the
legislative level, presenting current community issues to government officials, and even educating
community members about identified issues among their community. The practice of macro social
work is very broad but the important component is understanding the context of the environment
and focusing on groups and communities and not just one individual. An area of practice at the
macro level of social work is community organizing. Community organizing begins with the process
of identifying targets of injustice in the local neighborhood (Brueggemann, 2014, p. 243). Part of
community organizing is watching how the local government

On admission to hospital a nurse would implement a care plan to help Mr Williams through his time

can be defined as a person centered. This was first developed by Dr Carl Rogers between the 1940s
and 1960s and was considered radical and at the time revolutionary. His theory pushed towards the
individual to seek out and fulfil their own personal potential whilst the therapist would create an
environment where a person would psychologically and physically feel free from any threat, this
would ultimately be achieved by a positive, genuine and empathetic setting created by the therapist.
These ideas have since been transferred to many roles where people are in relationships such as
childcare, teaching and patient care as is the case with Mr

Gender Roles And Social Construction
Gender roles have influenced our society our whole lives, without us realizing it. They determine the
way in which we, as members of society, behave among others and what is deemed socially
acceptable and what is not, all based on our gender. From the moment children take their first
breaths, they are exposed to the gender roles society has set. This is all part of a social construction
to categorize the two genders into believing that they should act in a particular matter, using toys as
an advertising method. If the baby is a female, parents will opt to dress her in pink or purple,
classifying the child as "girly". However, if the child is male, parents will often opt for blue and
green, avoiding pink in order to confirm the masculine gender by society's standards. Even as kids, a
girl will automatically head to the pink side of the toy store, just as a boy would head to the blue
section due to their pre–exposed view of society. The social construction predefines a societies
belief, thoughts, and what they consider a norm. As part of a community we take in what is expected
of us, and try to attribute one self into that specific norm. So in some ways the dramaturgical theory
plays a big part in a person's daily life. Due to constantly being told how to behave by those around
us, we develop a role in life some might call a type of "theatrical performance" (Conley 2013:139).
An individual can get so wrapped up in what society expects from them that they embody that

The Role Of The Social Worker
A dignified life is the undeniable right to all members of a community. Regrettably, their is a sizable
population of individuals who have difficulty accessing resources that could potentially enhance
their opportunity for self determination. Basic human needs and services catalyze dignity and self
determination. The role of the social worker is quintessential in connecting individuals in need with
helpful and life altering resources. Social workers have the difficult task of developing institutional
knowledge of resources and services associated with their field. The task is further compounded
with ever changing institutional policies. However, resource allocation is just a one part of the social
work profession. Every client has a distinctive need and set of circumstances which require careful
inspection. Social workers engage in dynamic problem solving and individual analysis to determine
the proper recourse for each and every individual client. Analysis, research, and interviews are
paramount in understanding the needs of every client. Aside from an individual evaluation, social
workers need to determine the greater conditional forces. Part of the dynamic process is
understanding the socio–economic aspect that contributes to inequity. Understanding diversity and
socio economic challenges of various group provides context from which the individual's issues
complications can be better assessed. The entirety of this analysis provides an individual with their

The Role Of Social Stratification In Society
In our world, social stratification has had a very large influence on every person's life since the dawn
of civilization. All societies are stratified, the only thing setting them apart is the differing criteria
that society uses to separate individuals or families. From Europeans using kings, queens, knights,
and clergymen, ancient Egyptians' pharaohs, scribes, and merchants, and today's most common
system of upper, middle, and lower classes, social stratification has had a large role in the way
society runs. Karl Marx, a German philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist viewed social class
as being segregated between the "bourgeoisie", named after citizens who own the means of
production, and the "proletarians", or the common workers of society. As an example, the large
majority of my family has belonged under the proletariat class. To start off with my father's side of
the family, my great–great–grandfather, Bert S. Strayer, was a farmer and the founder of Strayer
Seed Company. Bert had a son, Gordon, who was also a farmer and ran the company after Bert
passed away. Gordon gave the company off to my grandpa Dennis and it eventually dissolved due to
a tsunami hitting the warehouse. My father took my grandfather's knowledge and expertise of seed
and agronomy and now is a sales manager at LaCrosse Turf Seed. By staying within the same

Social Relations And Gender Roles
Every one of us have been influenced in one way or another by social relations to gender roles. All
human cultures have various expectations regarding the male or female gender. There are many
standards that dictate how individuals should dress, think, behave, and interact with the world
around them. It is when these roles begin to reduce the life chances of individuals and preserve

means to be a man or a woman. Because of this if a female partakes in a "masculine" activity it is

If she is African American, it is sixty–four cents for every dollar earned by a man and fifty–four
cents if she is Latina. Throughout a lifetime, a typical woman loses about $700,000 just because she
is paid less than a man. (now national, 2017) No one should be discriminated against in the
workplace because of his or her own gender. It is shocking that even fifty–three years later women
are still having this fight for equal pay. Equal pay means economic growth for the nation. If women
were making more, the additional money flowing towards food, clothing, household items and
services this would expand the economy by at least three or four percentages. This would also
strengthen the middle class as well. If women were to be paid a fair share, more families can join the
middle class and have a chance at economic security. Women can hold the responsibility that jobs
require. Some women acquired their degree, attended a university or college and became an expert
in their career and performs the job just as well, if not better, than a male, then they absolutely
should be paid equal salaries. Women who work full time earn seventy–seven percent of what a
male earns. Why should women have to work an extra sixty days (three months) to earn what the
man did by the end of his previous year? This is highly degrading of the morals of women all over
America and the world. This sends a message saying that no matter how hard you can work as a
female you will never equal

Social role of women
The social role and stature of women has been an eternal topic. In an age when the images of
women were expected to be associated with marriage, motherhood, and domestic matters, few
Americans could have thought of a young woman from an upper–middle class family would pursue
professional study of art in Europe in the late nineteenth century. Yet, praises and critics both fall on
the young artist, Mary Cassatt (1844 – 1926). In this paper, I will show how two historians contrast
about the their views of this feminine artist, as well as their methodological approaches.
The first one is from Susan Fillin Yeh. In her article "Mary Cassatt's Images of Woman," she argues
that, Cassatt's images of women, unique within the context of ... Show more content on

probably attends is an afternoon matinee. (First Level) Appearing in the 1850s, popular by the

financial autonomy of women with interests like Cassatt's opera–goer. (Second Level) The painting,

While Yeh concludes Cassatt's images being independent modern women, Norma Broude doubts
such idea in her article "Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman or the Cult of True Womanhood?", in which
she argues Cassatt's patterns of "complicity" and "resistance." From her perspective, Cassatt had to
negotiate very carefully her relationship to this "cult of true womanhood," as an atypical
professional "lady painter" from upper–middle–class. The images of happily sequestered mothers
and children supported and continue to support a conservative view of woman's nature and position,
and Cassatt's own political astuteness was responsible for this complex pattern of guarded social
resistance on the one hand and complicity on the other. She points out, that her repeated production
of happy mothers and children had been so successful might because a similar kind of social

Roles And Roles Of Primary Social Roles
Context matters. Research demonstrating racioethnic differences in the impact of primary social
roles clearly shows that an important set of role features coalesce for individual role actors. These
factors include role meaning, role use, and role sequencing. As presented in the social roles
literature, these role characteristics operate collectively as individuals enter into the domain of paid
work or make a decision to start their own families through marriage and/or parenthood. The
enactment of a social role initiates a process whereby actors assign meaning to their role behaviors,
determine how they wish to utilize the resources attached to newly–acquired social roles, and make
entre' into primary social roles in some sequential order. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the interim, a separate body of research spawned by a new group of scholars drew a clear target
on the work–family interface. We address this scholarship in the final empirical chapter.
Unfortunately, there remains little cross–talk between these bodies of literature. Regardless of their
profitability (in terms of careers, journal opportunities, etc...), both subareas are guilty of
abandoning the extended family. This is somewhat troubling as studies show that work values and
the meaning of work develop during childhood and remain relatively stable over the life course.
In addition, instead of affording role participants an opportunity to engage in a single identity
(worker), paid work has become fragmented. To the extent that an individual experiences multiple
facets of work across the life course, being a part of the paid work force is like having multiple
worker identities within a single lifetime. For example, adults aged 30 and over who were part of the
paid labor force in the 1980s could anticipate remaining in a job for twenty years or more. By the
early 1990's it was clear that not only were there fewer lifetime jobs available to workers, but those
with a high school education (or less) were especially vulnerable to unstable employment. This
pattern is not unique to the United States but appears to be an

Sex Roles Are A Social Construct Society
Sex roles are a social construct society has placed upon the sexes to do things that are within their
nature. For example, a woman, has been seen as a mother, caretaker, housewife, whereas, a man, is
seen as a "breadwinner", hunter, and so on. Those depict occupations men and women are labeled to
have. In other terms, sex roles can indicate personality traits. For example, women are seen as
gentle, caring, and emotional. Men are seen as aggressive, brave, and sometimes hostile. Theories
have shown why the sexes are different biologically and how children grow up conforming to
society's role of what is masculine and feminine, or even androgynous.
Researchers in the 1930's have noticed differences in the responses of men and women pertaining ...

To be masculine is to have those personality traits. In contrast, femininity are traits such as,
nurturing, empathetic, and expressive of emotions. In turn, one can express traits that of masculine
and feminine, being androgynous. For example, I being a female, am not expressive of my emotions
and tend to be assertive at times. That being the social construct of masculine and feminine does not
pertain to each sex anymore. Androgyny is the fact that one can express both traits on the spectrum
and not just being on one side. Overall, sex roles are reinforced by the socialization theory, that
explains children are reinforced to be masculine or feminine. For example, when a boy does an
action of out his role, plays with dolls, he is reinforced by parents or older adult figures that what he
is doing does not make him masculine and take away the doll. In contrast, for girls playing with
trucks is seen as not feminine. Research to support the social role theory found that individuals
assigned a supervisor role were more dominant versus being the supervisee and being submissive.
As well as the social learning theory which states children model behavior of the gender they are
associated with. Boys watch their dad watch sports and fix cars, where as, girls watch their mom
cook and clean. More than often, the parents teach them and want them to model after

Biological And Social Norms Of Gender Roles
Introduction
In general, social psychology looks at how people think about one another, but as well as how they
influence and relate to each other (Myers, 2014, pg. 554). Gender plays a fascinating role within our
social settings. Biological sex defines gender, however biology and social characteristics help define
a male and a female (Myers, 2014, pg.154). Gender roles are behaviours that a culture would
typically expect from both male and females (Myers, 2014, pg.159). Our expectations for things like
the parent that stays home with the children, shopping, driving, and who pays for dinner on a date
come from these gender roles. Gender roles bring up questions around biology versus our cultural
surroundings and how gender roles become developed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cognitive dissonance is becoming aware of the fact that our attitudes and actions are not coinciding
and therefore tension is felt (Myers, 2014, pg.558). Birdee struggles with this at the very beginning
of the movie, and often reflects back on the tension she felt when she was still with Bill. This
tension follows her until she is able to actually verbalize it and is made clear when describing her
loss of self. This moment happens in the bathroom when Birdee says this to her Mama, "I was
audacious Mama I was...the harder I tried to be what he wanted me to be, the less I saw myself in
his eyes...One day I looked and I was gone" (Whitaker et al., 1998). Her attitude did not match her
actions and often did not match her morals which she discovers this along with the loss of herself

Social Norms Of Gender Roles
A set of social norms that are generally accepted, appropriate, or desirable based on a person's sex or
sexuality are referred to as gender roles. Gender roles play a large role in how a society and its
people are shaped and how people should behave according to their sex. Gender roles are based on
social norms or standards that are created in a society. In many cultures, being masculine is
traditionally associated with having or showing strength, aggression, dominance, and to never reveal
any significant signs of emotion that may show weakness. On the other hand, being feminine is
traditionally associated with passivity, nurturing, and being submissive. Growing up, I have always

Are Gender Roles Or Stereotypes A Social Injustice?
Gender Roles/Stereotypes
"A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is her work of fiction." –Oscar Wilde. This
quote is a gender stereotype explaining that a man's face shows the scars of his toughness and
woman are covered with makeup. What if it was the other way around? Based off of gender
roles/stereotypes this may sound odd to some people. Because of this, we should not influence
gender stereotypes/roles onto people because most of these don't apply like they used to.
What are stereotypes, you may ask? Stereotypes are natural thoughts that cause a person to
categorize people to have a certain look, behavior, mind, etc. Gender roles are stereotypes based on
the looks, behavior, sexuality, opinions/choices, thoughts, etc. of a certain gender. In addition, there
are a lot common gender stereotypes that people believe today. Two of these stereotypes are girls are
supposed to wear makeup and pink adorable dresses and guys are big, tough and never cry. ... Show

Well, gender roles are teaching everyone to assume information about people they know nothing
about. People judge others for not "portraying" their gender if they don't act/look/etc like the
stereotype. Also, people are being bullied everyday for being different from certain gender
characteristics. Based on the beliefs of parents, teachers, the media, religion, and so on, different
individuals can make "normal" people act out against them in harsh ways. Due to the discrimination
of individuals who don't apply to gender roles, these people may begin to not like who they are.
These kind of negative thoughts commonly leads to depression, self harm, and suicide. What once

Gender Roles : A Social Norm For Women
I never really thought about gender roles growing up. I wanted to shave my legs by the time I was
eight, I wanted to wear makeup before I even hit sixth grade, and I used to cry when my mom told
me I had to wear pants to school instead of a dress when it was cold outside. I was your
stereotypical feminine female. But as I have grown up, I have begun to realize that many people are
not like me. I have also begun to realize what many more people expect from me. Wearing makeup
has become a social norm for women. Little girls put on costume makeup to play dress up because
they see the "beautiful" women on TV and in the media wearing it. Those "beautiful" women

So again, we return to the question of these young girls wouldn't wear makeup if all of their idols
are. We are taught as young women (either by our parents, the media, or our friends) that it is the
correct thing to do, so we do it. But men are not taught this same thing; your typical male role
models do not wear makeup. Sure, if an actor is going on camera or playing a particular character
they will wear some type of stage makeup, but that is an exception. Men, for the most part, do not
feel the pressures of society to look perfect and hide their flaws because the role models they see
everyday are out living their life without a drop of tinted moisturizer. I cannot even count the
number of times I have seen photos of a male and female celebrity both in sweatpants with the
males caption as "so and so goes grocery shopping in relaxed pants" and the females saying "so and
so is so heartbroken over her break up that she could not even get dressed today." That example is a
major reason as to why I am focusing on wearing makeup in this paper. I am a woman who is sick
and tired of being expected to hide my flaws and look hot while the man next to me can wear
sweatpants with bedhead and not get a second look from anyone. Every morning when I wake up, I
get dressed, I put on my contacts, and then I do my make up. It's like clockwork. First

The Role Of Social Media On Healthcare
INTRODUCTION The healthcare industry is slowly embracing and recognizing the importance and
power of social media. Millions of people of all ages go online each day, to seek information, do
online research, share photos, write blogs, watch videos, play online games, and so much more.
Many healthcare businesses have already, or are starting, to create an online presence to capture the
millions of people that go online every day. Social media can help healthcare professionals and
organizations to promote and advertise their products and services locally and globally. Different
healthcare social media sites make it easier for consumers to locate the products and/or services they
want to find. Successful healthcare social media sites are designed to be engaging, interactive and to
create positive relationships with existing consumers. Then, potential new clients can make better
purchasing decisions based on the first–hand experience from others who have personal knowledge
of the product or service. ROLE OF HEALTHCARE SOCIAL MEDIA The role of social media in
healthcare follows the same principles as most other industries in terms of mass communication,
global reach, engagement, and instantaneous feedback from and to a relevant group of people. In
short, the healthcare social media platform is an effective, low cost method to share information,
create communities, and maintain relationships with key groups. The Executive Director of Deloitte

Boyz In The Hood Social Role Theory
Boyz in the Hood starts off with the character Tre Styles as a young man who lives in South Central,
Los Angeles with his mom Rita. The social work student viewed this beginning portion of the movie
portraying his young life as a social worker. The social work student noticed that Tre lived with his
mother in an apartment in a rough neighborhood. Tre went to school but had problems acting out
and being the class clown. Tre and the friends he hung around here had foul language and used
profanity as young kids. This is just one example of how Tre's surroundings influenced his life.
According to Newman & Newman (2014), the Social Role theory suggests that a person learns
behaviors from observing in their environments. Young Tre Styles learned profanity from
somewhere in his rough environment and this is a method of learning socially. Rita, his mother was
working on her Master's degree and wanted better for Tre, so it is unlikely she promoted the use of
profanity in her household. A contract between the two was drafter and Tre agreed with his mother
that if he did not behave he would move in with his father. Rita stayed true to the contract they
drafted and took Tre to live with his father Furious, so Tre could learn how to be a man.
Fast forward 7 years later to a now older Tre Styles, his educational background has grown and the
only minor source of trauma that has occurred could be the change of living with his father instead
of his mother now. Tre still talked to his mom

Social Work's Role
In today's society social work plays an extremely important role. With the misfortunes of many,
social workers are there to lend a helping hand and to improve the quality of life to those who
happen to be at a disadvantage and whom are less fortunate. It is the social workers' hard work,
dedication, compassion, good–heartedness, and strive that allow men, women, children, and families
to overcome obstacles and difficulties all while continuing to make the most out of any given
situation and improve their quality of life.
A social worker is "any of various professional activities or methods concretely concerned with
providing social services, especially with the investigation, treatment, and material aid of the
economically, physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged" ("Social work," 2014). In other
words, a social worker values principles and techniques to helping people obtain services,
counseling, and psychotherapy with not only individuals, but with families, and groups to help
better themselves. ("Social Work", 2014) Social workers also "require the knowledge of human
development/behavior, social and economic, and cultural institutions" ("Code of ethics," 2008).
When entering a career in social work, just like any other profession there come responsibilities.
"The job of a social worker is often a challenging one" ("Job duties and," 2014). A social worker's
primary responsibility is to "enhance the well–being and help meet the basic human needs of all

Importance Of Social Roles In Education
Because of my passion for healthcare, I have numerous social roles relating to the field. Most
importantly, I have a social role of being a pre–medical undergraduate student at Loyola University
Chicago, a university which is known for their pre–professional health care programs. As a student,
I have a social script of educating myself in order to obtain a beneficial career in the future. Through
the help of the professors, teacher's assistants, classmates, and tutoring sessions that are present at
Loyola, I am able to fulfill my social script of providing myself a sturdy foundation into the medical
field. Through these "trainings," I know how to work hard in order to achieve success in my
prerequisite classes for medical school. By the social scripts presented to me by the Loyola staff, I
make sure that my education is my top priority. Moreover, I have extracurricular activities that help
to strengthen my foundation in the healthcare field. This past summer, I volunteered at Northwest
Community Hospital where I helped out at the nurses' station of the rehabilitation unit by answering
call lights and doctors calls and by paging the appropriate nurses and PCTs (patient care
technicians). Furthermore, I volunteered at the Visitor's Entrance front desk where I was able to sign
patients in and out, direct them towards the rooms of their loved ones, deliver flowers and other
packages, and help discharge the patients.

Gender Roles And Social Norms
The media is currently largely responsible in creating and reminding people of the existence of
gender roles and social norms, which consequently influences children. Aside from media, parents
are the most responsible in the upbringing of their child. That being said, parents can choose to
control what they teach their child and steer them away from the societal norms of certain gender
roles, but they don't have control over the media's content. Sometimes, parents can't help if they give
their daughter a Barbie doll and their son a Batman action figure, because they don't realize it and
they themselves were raised to understand that girls are supposed to like this and do that and boys

When it comes to advertisements promoting certain toys and products to children, companies are not
afraid to advertise gender targeted products, because they know children are vulnerable. A 2017
study report titled "Gendered Advertising to Children: An Analysis of Differences in Male– and
Female–Targeted Television Commercials" written by Meredith Ford mentioned that, "When
children realize that the toys they see advertised are only meant for one gender, they latch on to that
group of children and do not socialize with the other gender. This sets a detrimental precedent for
child development and socialization skills." When children are exposed to media at a young age,
their brains first start to develop and they learn to adapt to their environment. As soon as the child is
fully developed, however, there is no way of causing them to forget what they learned or were
surrounded with whether it was something good or bad. Additionally, and interestingly, children are
capable without even realizing that they are pushing themselves away from the other gender because
they were vulnerable to learn from the media that their gender is only supposed to like what they are

The criticism brought on by social roles negatively impacts one's views on themselves and their
actions. Maycomb's strict social roles have lowered somes self esteem and has trapped people in a
certain personality or financial stance. These social roles can get in a person's head and change their
views and actions in result. An example of this is shown at the school where Scout explains to Miss
Caroline about the Ewells, " He's one of the Ewell's...They come the first day every year and then
they leave... You're supposed to mark 'em absent the rest of the year"(27). The Ewells have always

When a child is stereotyped as "trash" just because of their families wealth, it obviously takes a toll

response to when Scout asks him why he drinks cola out of that sack,"It helps folks latch onto a

Social Construction Of Gender And Gender Roles
While observing interactions between people of both different and the same genders in the park at
Orange Circle, it becomes evident how the social construction of gender and standard gender roles
may or may not follow archetypal manner and can be applied differently depending on the
individuals. Some of the observations recorded during this period have provided evidence that
gender roles and gender stereotypes may be followed or applied in an archetypal way. However,
what is most interesting is that the observation of select individuals has delineated the manner by
which certain aspects of gender roles are shown to be subverted, challenged, or even reversed.
Based on these observations, it can be surmised that people may have a choice in the ways in which
the social construction of gender does and does not apply to their lives. As was stated in the
introduction, some of the interactions recorded during the observation showed the ways in which
socially constructed gender roles are reinforced. This is best exemplified by the interaction between
two small children, a girl and a boy, who were playing by the fountain located in the center of the
park. The young boy can be described as exhibiting rather aggressive behaviors that include but are
not limited to pushing and shoving, throwing objects, and shouting. In contrast, the young girl
behaves in a much more submissive manner, reacting to the boy's actions by giggling, smiling and
squealing. This example provides

Social Roles in Society Essay
Social Roles in Society
Social psychology, as defined by the Microsoft Bookshelf, is the branch of human psychology that
deals with the behavior of groups and the influence of social factors on the individual. Social roles
are one of the many sub – categories of social psychology. I believe social roles to be the way we, as
individuals, act in certain situations; such as home life, educational and economic statue, peer
groups, etc. The Prison Simulation by Haney, Banks & Zimbardo is just one of the vast studies in
this area. In this study we will see how people take roles in life, and in simulated life situations.

I noticed that the inmates that were sentenced to life acted out much more than the inmates that were
only sentenced for a few years. At the time I took no great thought into this, but after reading this
study I have recalled the prison tour in my mind to critically analyze why this would be. I have
come to the conclusion that the life–sentenced prisoners have nothing to lose by acting irrational and
making spontaneous decisions. On the other hand, the inmates with the shorter sentences have
something to look forward to when getting out. They do not necessarily need to act out to obtain
attention, that is not what they are looking for.

Social Role And Social Roles

  • 1. Social Role And Social Roles Everybody in the world belongs to a subcultural group (people that come together that seek out others sharing similar ideas or views) or plays a social role in it. Playing in a social role, as individuals, we act in certain situations differently, such as in a work place, home, or around your peer groups. I believe it's a real occurrence that a lot of people deal with daily. The ideology of a subculture group or the social roles you play forms by separating or belonging in it and forming personal norms, sanctions, material objects, symbols, language patterns, and social institutions. Such as me being an employee (sales associate) at Payless and being a younger sister to an older brother which have similar ways but they also have a few differences. To begin with, when it comes to working for an economic institution I play a certain social role when being a sales associate. I wouldn't act the same way at my job like I do with my family members or my friends such as clowning around, teasing, cursing, or pulling pranks on each other. In my job description there are norms and sanctions that I need to follow, breathe, and live by them. I'm responsible for following the Company's safety and environmental laws, regulations, and procedures at work. For instance, always come in on time (unless you call in), follow the safety policies for ourselves and customers such as prevention of accidents removing things that can cause a fall or slip such as a 3 or 8 step ladder's or carts (children might mistake it as a toy), making sure boxes on top of the rack shelves are less than 8 inches high (not in the way for sprinkles or falling over), making sure each aisle is clean (nobody's going to come into a dirty store), putting shoes in their right particular areas and sizes from kids on the left hand side, women's in the middle, and the men's on the right hand side and straight across the back of the store. In addition, to safety reasons in work wear we can wear almost about anything but must be comfortable like business wear or casual (no jeans, open back sandals/heels, and must be knee length) and have a Payless store tag always, also when it comes to lifting boxes we must always wear a black back support belt while lifting. ... • 3. Positive Role In Social Work Social work is a practice based profession and academic discipline focusing on the principles of social justice, human rights and equality and diversity (International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), 2014). Furthermore, social work is a complex discipline which is underpinned by theories grounded in social science, humanities and indigenous knowledge (IFSW, 2014). Social work has been embedded into society as a fundamental aspect of planning person centred care for vulnerable groups (Dowling et al, 2006). There are many schools of thought which attempt to define what constitutes a vulnerable group within society. Richardson et al (2015) states that vulnerability arises within those individuals who need support to address the challenges that affect their quality of life. Poverty, extremes of age, disability, mental or physical health status and ethnicity all have the potential to contribute to vulnerability and social exclusion of the group or individual (Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 2017). In particular, the elderly and youths leaving care are recognised as having multiple needs and face adversity integrating wholly into society. It is the role of the social worker to assess, plan, intervene, implement and evaluate the care for these groups and individuals (Horner, 2009)). Social workers play a vital role within society in supporting such people regardless of their background. They are not only there to protect people from abuse but to also help enable individuals to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Female And Female Roles And Social Factors Until the 1970s, "sex was known as or related to being a male or either a female. It was also referred as the sex roles, sex differences or sex changer operation. People saw gender as being masculine and feminine in certain cultures, like the French and Spanish. Now people see sex in two ways, either in the biological way or the social factors. Johnson explains the differences between the biological way and the social factors and the meaning of a male and female has changed over time and differ by culture. Female and male roles was established by cultural and biological factors by people around the world. It also has to do with the way people were brought up by parents and society as a whole. An early feminist named Mary Wollstonecraft wrote a treatise called "Vindication of the Rights of Woman." She wrote this arguing that woman and men are basically equal. They may be different biologically, but when it comes to the roles of each one they are the same. She also stated that the roles of society was brought on by society and they aren't biologically determined (Ojeda 14). Gender has played a role in my life in so many ways. I was always told that by older woman and some males that "girls are supposed to be seen, not heard." I always wondered what that meant until I got to a certain age. They meant that females are supposed to be loving, caring, and quiet and shouldn't draw attention to themselves. I was always taught in my history classes that males and females have ... • 7. The Role of Witchcraft in the Social Order The newest generation in western society is being partially raised by films, literature, and music. Pop culture is taking a bigger and bigger role in the upbringing of today's children. Images like Harry Potter flying on his broomstick during a game of quidditch, or the old lady from Brave creating potions. To the majority of Western Society, these situations are used for entertainment purposes, but many tribes and villages still believe in the power of witchcraft and see it as an enormous threat. Weather witchcraft is still prevalent for religious reasons, old school beliefs, or economic motives, the fact still remains that it is used to show order and give power to those who are willing to give up a life to take it. Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and economic status, the blame was often put of them regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar, 1993:317). Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in society (Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring down those who are on the higher economic and social ladder. This can be seen majorly in the Badyaranke tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that showed that those who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of summoning the spirit of Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy crops) and preforming witchcraft on their crops to gain wealth in the community (Simmons, 1980:455). In both of these societies it is evident that the community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft. Scapegoat It is not rare that a community often needs a way to explain unexplainable occurrences. Humans in western society always look for a science based logical reason to legitimize a situation. While this is a common human trait, the science aspect can be lost on those nations that are geared more towards religious of spiritual beliefs. • 9. Social Construction Of Gender Roles Essay Gender roles are personality traits, mannerisms, interests, attitudes, and behaviors that are regarded as either "male" or "female" by a person's culture. It has been proven that both genetics and environment influence the development of gender roles; they are mostly taught while growing up. However, they may prevent people from conforming to their true gender identities. In fact, if we no longer assigned genders, then our society would change to be more inclusive. This does not mean that traditional roles are bad, but more research is needed to discover the influences of genetics and environment on individual gender roles and in society. Until then, these roles are stopping our society from developing into a more equal and open minded place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the majority of women don't stay at home all day, the still have some roles that are expected of them. They are expected to primarily take care of the children, and make sure the house is tidy. Social arrangements, such as dinner with friends, are likely to be managed by the wife. Wives are more likely to initiate discussions about planned vacations. If the kids need to be driven to activities, it is usually the mother who does the driving. She is also likely to be the one buying clothes for them. But men also have standards too. They're often in charge of fixing up things in the house or tuning up the car. Or if someone tosses a ball around with the kids, it is likely to be the father. Most of these little actions and behaviors aren't done on purpose, they're just habits. The husband might take out the garbage, carry packages into the house or the grill master. The wife might dress the kids, make plans, and call family members. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it shows how deeply ingrained these expectations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Social Construct On Gender Roles Essay Ailyn V. Gutierrez Romanes Professor Hussein Elali ENC 1101 5 December 2016 Social Construct on Gender Roles Social constructs are ideas that are created by societies that are not representations of reality. Usually ideas that are socially constructed are seen as the norm because they have prevailed within societies for several years. These ideas have developed as generations have passed them on and as societies have become more liberal. Social constructs can range from various topics but, in gender roles social constructs have caused a significant impact because these ideas dictate what is wrong and what is right for men and women to do. The rules that societies have created for each gender have been modified over the years, but they have affected the decisions that each person makes and has led to disagreements when something out of the norm is done. The reason that some of these ideas have changed over time is because family dynamics have changed, education is more accessible and societies have become more advanced. As societies and communities developed they began to transform family dynamics. The socially constructed idea of gender that was originally created for the family was that the men had to work and the women had to stay at home and take care of household chores. These ideas were constructed base on past societies and communities but in today's societies it is an idea that happens but rarely because societies today are constructed differently. • 13. Essay on The Social Construction of Gender Roles The Social Construction of Gender Roles Gender or sex roles are the expected patterns of behavior assumed to follow from a person's sex. Gender roles are not natural. They are formed by and vary within society, culture, geographic location, politics and time. There is a strong relationship between the social construction of gender and compulsory heterosexuality. People are programmed into certain gender roles and social categories through socialization and interaction with others. Expectations about appropriate gender role characteristics and sexual behavior have evolved throughout history, especially for women. In the 1700's and 1800's, the men's role included earning an ... In 1920, women won the right to vote and they were gradually moving into the male–dominated labor force, but gender roles were not changing much. Due to the World War II draft, many women entered the labor force and even helped run the country. Upon the return of the veterans, many women were forced back into their homes. However, the opportunities for women were broadening and some women began making careers for themselves outside of the home. The 1960's saw many feminist movements and in 1963 the Equal Pay Act was passed by Congress which enticed more women to get out of the house and into better careers. Men had difficulties accepting and adjusting to changes in women's roles. They had to adjust to having women around them at their job sites and some felt that women were filling positions that an unemployed man should have been given. Men also felt that the traditional male role as provider was being threatened, so some men did not allow their wives to enter the labor force. Most men, however, have gradually accepted women in the career world. Today, men are even taking on roles that were once deemed 'female' like nursing, homemaking and teaching. There are many social agents that cause the construction of gender roles. Parents and family are important socialization agents in the gender role development of children. • 15. The Role Of A Social Worker The role of a social worker involves firstly obtaining a professional qualification at degree level set out by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC), who sets educational standards and regulates for social worker training. The social worker is an intricate part of society which supports and works with vulnerable individuals, families, children and the wider community in order to protect these individuals from harm, neglect and abuse. Assessment is core to social workers practice. As a social worker, professional practice entails supporting and evaluating assessments of need and risk continually, Walker and Beckett (2003). Social workers help individuals, families and communities to make informed choices and understand their own resourcefulness in order to bring about positive change to their lives. However, this can involve negotiating both complex and challenging situations. In some cases the social worker is required to intervene where children are at risk of harm from their parent or caregiver in a crisis child protection situation, the social worker would be required to present facts to the courts in order to obtain a child protection order, (Section 47 of the Children's Act 1989). Ultimately the social worker must attempt to build positive relationships in sometimes adverse situations with individuals whom may or may not wish to cooperate, however, the social worker must where possible keep the family together. • 17. George Babbitt's Characters And Conformist Social Roles Secondly, the characters experience conformist social roles. George Babbitt conforms to the social role of being a father and husband. In Babbitt's society it is expected for men to be the bread–winner of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is experiencing the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he can be. George is out of love with his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he did not even love her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest and a "good wife" (Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or that they felt obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them. Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of George leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. Hence, he is out of love it leads him to temptation. Babbitt imagines a "fairy child" (Lewis 5). He uses the fairy child as his escape form reality. He knows he cannot morally cheat on his wife, therefore he imagines a life without her with other women. The first woman he imagines being with is McGoun (describe her from the book). The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her from the book). The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his wife could be like, McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none of these things. Myra has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads magazine, her children do not pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is going through struggle of being faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social role is his playing is such a burden on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what people think of his scandalous ways. While he is having this newfound revolution, Myra is also having her own revolution. She becomes more lively and appears younger and George falls in love with her again. • 19. Gender Roles And Social Expectations As a child, many of us enjoyed watching Disney movies to the point that we basically lived off of those movies. In many Disney movies there were hidden aspects children mainly did not notice like gender roles and social expectations. Even though children may not realize the social expectations aspect incorporated into movies they still absorb those lessons like a sponge. They learn these aspects by seeing them as role models, they have the desire to become that person. For an example, during Halloween we see hundreds of little girls dressing up like their favorite princess. They see these princesses as role models since little girls can relate them to by gender. Depending on what the princess portrays in the movie determines the outcome if it is beneficial or flawed characteristics that the child may take up. Like in early Disney movies the princesses were the damsel that were saved by the prince but a different scenario is produced in Mulan. Mulan is a heroine and loved by all of China but it didn't start out like that, the expectations developed. In the movie, the characters and songs illustrated the expectations of a women and men that those expectations still exists in our own society today. In the beginning of Mulan, Fa Mulan is shown preparing to meet the matchmaker, writing womanly qualities on her forearm. Those words still resonate in today's society. The words she wrote "quiet and demure, graceful, polite, delicate, refined, poised..." These are womanly qualities ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Role Of A Social Worker Introduction Law has come to play a very important part in social work practice. It can be said that the understanding of law underpins and provides duties and power, whilst understanding the statutory legal requirements is essential for effective, fair, anti–discriminatory practice (Brammer 2007). Due to the shear amount of laws and legislation that have been passed or updated over the last decade, the role of the social worker, metaphorically speaking could be said to have become somewhat of a chameleon, forever adapting to their legal environment, whilst trying hard to remain true to the traditional values of the role of a social worker. It is this conflict between law and social work values that will be analyzed in this paper. From looking at the values that underpin the modern day social worker and then looking at some of the main legislation relating to adult services such as the Mental Health Act 2007, the Community Care Act 1996, Mental Capacity Act 2005 the relationship between these Acts' and how they sit with social work values will then be discussed. 1.1 The Key Values and Ethics of the Social Worker Values and ethics are sets of beliefs and principles that have an important role to play in terms of providing guide to action, offering a framework for making sense of a given situation in practice, providing a yardstick by which to judge the appropriateness of a given action whilst also sustaining a social worker through difficult, discouraging times (Thompson ... • 23. Are Gender Roles A Social Construct Essay I am a strong believer that gender roles are a social construct. However, gender identity is not. Therefore, it is very important to know the difference. Gender roles are defined as "theoretical constructs involving of social and behavioral norms that are widely considered to be socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. The perception of gender roles includes attitudes, actions, and personality traits associated with a particular gender within that culture. Gender roles are predominantly considered within a family context as well as within society in general". I believe that gender roles and gender expression are social constructs. There is almost nothing that is intrinsically male or female and merely things that are coded as male or female by the culture we live ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A woman is no less a woman when she possesses traditionally masculine qualities and a man is no less a man when he possesses traditionally feminine qualities. Gender roles are outdated in modern society and only cast a negative light on those who don't adhere to them. They no longer hold ground in our society. Household chores are not gendered. There is no reason to believe that they are, just because a certain group of people of one gender have been forced to occupy those roles for years, it doesn't mean the activity is or should be gendered. Women are not better at household things and men are not better at non household things. Everyone needs to learn to do what they need to do to survive. If someone has a skill that does not stereotypically conform to their gender, they should be able to use that skill without feeling like society is against them. Why let a useful skill go to waste? It is true that gender roles are not always bad or oppressive even though they still are expectations and obligations placed by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Role Of Macro Social Work Macro social work is the process of investigating a large scale of social problems and developing and implementing social interventions meant to create positive change at community, state, and national levels. The use of social practices such as research, program development, community– based interventions, advocacy, policy analysis, and administration are used to identify and implement change needed for addressing and improving large scale social issues. Macro social workers investigate social issues by conducting research, data methods, and direct practice. Some macro social workers are used to develop programs for certain communities or specific demographics among these communities. Another important role of macro social work is advocacy. At a macro level, advocating for disadvantaged populations could be lobbying for changes at the legislative level, presenting current community issues to government officials, and even educating community members about identified issues among their community. The practice of macro social work is very broad but the important component is understanding the context of the environment and focusing on groups and communities and not just one individual. An area of practice at the macro level of social work is community organizing. Community organizing begins with the process of identifying targets of injustice in the local neighborhood (Brueggemann, 2014, p. 243). According to the working together to safeguard children 2010 'child protection is a part of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children' this refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering or likely to suffer from significant harm. Significant harm includes physical, sexual, emotional abuse as well as neglect and domestic violence. The issue can occur due to personal judgement determining what amount of ill treatment is significant harm. (www.workingtogetheronline.co.uk) The department of education published the statutory guideline 'working together to safeguard children. A guide to inter–agency working to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in March 2013.' This replaces several previous documents including initial and core assessments by the common framework assessment (CAF). This was first developed by Dr Carl Rogers between the 1940s and 1960s and was considered radical and at the time revolutionary. His theory pushed towards the individual to seek out and fulfil their own personal potential whilst the therapist would create an environment where a person would psychologically and physically feel free from any threat, this would ultimately be achieved by a positive, genuine and empathetic setting created by the therapist. • 33. Gender Roles And Social Construction Gender roles have influenced our society our whole lives, without us realizing it. They determine the way in which we, as members of society, behave among others and what is deemed socially acceptable and what is not, all based on our gender. From the moment children take their first breaths, they are exposed to the gender roles society has set. This is all part of a social construction to categorize the two genders into believing that they should act in a particular matter, using toys as an advertising method. If the baby is a female, parents will opt to dress her in pink or purple, classifying the child as "girly". However, if the child is male, parents will often opt for blue and green, avoiding pink in order to confirm the masculine gender by society's standards. Even as kids, a girl will automatically head to the pink side of the toy store, just as a boy would head to the blue section due to their pre–exposed view of society. The social construction predefines a societies belief, thoughts, and what they consider a norm. As part of a community we take in what is expected of us, and try to attribute one self into that specific norm. So in some ways the dramaturgical theory plays a big part in a person's daily life. Due to constantly being told how to behave by those around us, we develop a role in life some might call a type of "theatrical performance" (Conley 2013:139). An individual can get so wrapped up in what society expects from them that they embody that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Regrettably, their is a sizable population of individuals who have difficulty accessing resources that could potentially enhance their opportunity for self determination. Basic human needs and services catalyze dignity and self determination. The role of the social worker is quintessential in connecting individuals in need with helpful and life altering resources. Social workers have the difficult task of developing institutional knowledge of resources and services associated with their field. The task is further compounded with ever changing institutional policies. However, resource allocation is just a one part of the social work profession. Every client has a distinctive need and set of circumstances which require careful inspection. Social workers engage in dynamic problem solving and individual analysis to determine the proper recourse for each and every individual client. • 41. The Role Of Social Stratification In Society In our world, social stratification has had a very large influence on every person's life since the dawn of civilization. All societies are stratified, the only thing setting them apart is the differing criteria that society uses to separate individuals or families. From Europeans using kings, queens, knights, and clergymen, ancient Egyptians' pharaohs, scribes, and merchants, and today's most common system of upper, middle, and lower classes, social stratification has had a large role in the way society runs. Karl Marx, a German philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist viewed social class as being segregated between the "bourgeoisie", named after citizens who own the means of production, and the "proletarians", or the common workers of society. As an example, the large majority of my family has belonged under the proletariat class. To start off with my father's side of the family, my great–great–grandfather, Bert S. Strayer, was a farmer and the founder of Strayer Seed Company. Bert had a son, Gordon, who was also a farmer and ran the company after Bert passed away. Gordon gave the company off to my grandpa Dennis and it eventually dissolved due to a tsunami hitting the warehouse. All human cultures have various expectations regarding the male or female gender. There are many standards that dictate how individuals should dress, think, behave, and interact with the world around them. It is when these roles begin to reduce the life chances of individuals and preserve inequality that becomes problematic. Humans, as a society, crafted their own definitions of what it means to be a man or a woman. Because of this if a female partakes in a "masculine" activity it is often met with disgust and hostility and if a male partakes in a "feminine" activity it is scorned by men and women alike. Throughout a lifetime, a typical woman loses about $700,000 just because she is paid less than a man. (now national, 2017) No one should be discriminated against in the workplace because of his or her own gender. It is shocking that even fifty–three years later women are still having this fight for equal pay. Equal pay means economic growth for the nation. If women were making more, the additional money flowing towards food, clothing, household items and services this would expand the economy by at least three or four percentages. This would also strengthen the middle class as well. If women were to be paid a fair share, more families can join the middle class and have a chance at economic security. Women can hold the responsibility that jobs require. Some women acquired their degree, attended a university or college and became an expert in their career and performs the job just as well, if not better, than a male, then they absolutely should be paid equal salaries. Women who work full time earn seventy–seven percent of what a male earns. Why should women have to work an extra sixty days (three months) to earn what the man did by the end of his previous year? Yet, praises and critics both fall on the young artist, Mary Cassatt (1844 – 1926). In this paper, I will show how two historians contrast about the their views of this feminine artist, as well as their methodological approaches. The first one is from Susan Fillin Yeh. From her perspective, Cassatt had to negotiate very carefully her relationship to this "cult of true womanhood," as an atypical professional "lady painter" from upper–middle–class. The images of happily sequestered mothers and children supported and continue to support a conservative view of woman's nature and position, and Cassatt's own political astuteness was responsible for this complex pattern of guarded social resistance on the one hand and complicity on the other. Research demonstrating racioethnic differences in the impact of primary social roles clearly shows that an important set of role features coalesce for individual role actors. These factors include role meaning, role use, and role sequencing. As presented in the social roles literature, these role characteristics operate collectively as individuals enter into the domain of paid work or make a decision to start their own families through marriage and/or parenthood. The enactment of a social role initiates a process whereby actors assign meaning to their role behaviors, determine how they wish to utilize the resources attached to newly–acquired social roles, and make entre' into primary social roles in some sequential order. ... We address this scholarship in the final empirical chapter. Unfortunately, there remains little cross–talk between these bodies of literature. Regardless of their profitability (in terms of careers, journal opportunities, etc...), both subareas are guilty of abandoning the extended family. This is somewhat troubling as studies show that work values and the meaning of work develop during childhood and remain relatively stable over the life course. In addition, instead of affording role participants an opportunity to engage in a single identity (worker), paid work has become fragmented. To the extent that an individual experiences multiple facets of work across the life course, being a part of the paid work force is like having multiple worker identities within a single lifetime. For example, adults aged 30 and over who were part of the paid labor force in the 1980s could anticipate remaining in a job for twenty years or more. By the early 1990's it was clear that not only were there fewer lifetime jobs available to workers, but those with a high school education (or less) were especially vulnerable to unstable employment. For example, a woman, has been seen as a mother, caretaker, housewife, whereas, a man, is seen as a "breadwinner", hunter, and so on. Those depict occupations men and women are labeled to have. In other terms, sex roles can indicate personality traits. For example, women are seen as gentle, caring, and emotional. Men are seen as aggressive, brave, and sometimes hostile. Androgyny is the fact that one can express both traits on the spectrum and not just being on one side. Overall, sex roles are reinforced by the socialization theory, that explains children are reinforced to be masculine or feminine. For example, when a boy does an action of out his role, plays with dolls, he is reinforced by parents or older adult figures that what he is doing does not make him masculine and take away the doll. In contrast, for girls playing with trucks is seen as not feminine. Biological And Social Norms Of Gender Roles Introduction In general, social psychology looks at how people think about one another, but as well as how they influence and relate to each other (Myers, 2014, pg. 554). Gender plays a fascinating role within our social settings. Biological sex defines gender, however biology and social characteristics help define a male and a female (Myers, 2014, pg.154). Gender roles are behaviours that a culture would typically expect from both male and females (Myers, 2014, pg.159). We are taught as young women (either by our parents, the media, or our friends) that it is the correct thing to do, so we do it. But men are not taught this same thing; your typical male role models do not wear makeup. Sure, if an actor is going on camera or playing a particular character they will wear some type of stage makeup, but that is an exception. Men, for the most part, do not feel the pressures of society to look perfect and hide their flaws because the role models they see everyday are out living their life without a drop of tinted moisturizer. I cannot even count the number of times I have seen photos of a male and female celebrity both in sweatpants with the males caption as "so and so goes grocery shopping in relaxed pants" and the females saying "so and so is so heartbroken over her break up that she could not even get dressed today." Millions of people of all ages go online each day, to seek information, do online research, share photos, write blogs, watch videos, play online games, and so much more. Many healthcare businesses have already, or are starting, to create an online presence to capture the millions of people that go online every day. Social media can help healthcare professionals and organizations to promote and advertise their products and services locally and globally. Different healthcare social media sites make it easier for consumers to locate the products and/or services they want to find. The social work student viewed this beginning portion of the movie portraying his young life as a social worker. The social work student noticed that Tre lived with his mother in an apartment in a rough neighborhood. Tre went to school but had problems acting out and being the class clown. Tre and the friends he hung around here had foul language and used profanity as young kids. This is just one example of how Tre's surroundings influenced his life. According to Newman & Newman (2014), the Social Role theory suggests that a person learns behaviors from observing in their environments. Young Tre Styles learned profanity from somewhere in his rough environment and this is a method of learning socially. Rita, his mother was working on her Master's degree and wanted better for Tre, so it is unlikely she promoted the use of profanity in her household. With the misfortunes of many, social workers are there to lend a helping hand and to improve the quality of life to those who happen to be at a disadvantage and whom are less fortunate. A 2017 study report titled "Gendered Advertising to Children: An Analysis of Differences in Male– and Female–Targeted Television Commercials" written by Meredith Ford mentioned that, "When children realize that the toys they see advertised are only meant for one gender, they latch on to that group of children and do not socialize with the other gender. This sets a detrimental precedent for child development and socialization skills." When children are exposed to media at a young age, their brains first start to develop and they learn to adapt to their environment. As soon as the child is fully developed, however, there is no way of causing them to forget what they learned or were surrounded with whether it was something good or bad. Additionally, and interestingly, children are capable without even realizing that they are pushing themselves away from the other gender because they were vulnerable to learn from the media that their gender is only supposed to like what they are advertising and not the other genders' products. Sure they may come to the realization that some of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. To Kill A Mockingbird Social Roles The criticism brought on by social roles negatively impacts one's views on themselves and their actions. Maycomb's strict social roles have lowered somes self esteem and has trapped people in a certain personality or financial stance. These social roles can get in a person's head and change their views and actions in result. An example of this is shown at the school where Scout explains to Miss Caroline about the Ewells, " He's one of the Ewell's...They come the first day every year and then they leave... You're supposed to mark 'em absent the rest of the year"(27). The Ewells have always left the first day of school because that's who they are and who they will always be, but how are the children supposed to better themselves if this social role has been placed on them since birth. This normal behavior of the Ewells restricts the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When a child is stereotyped as "trash" just because of their families wealth, it obviously takes a toll on them mentally and physically. Dolphus Raymond is often looked at as one who does not care about social roles and goes against them, but his actions are very much affected by them. This is his response to when Scout asks him why he drinks cola out of that sack,"It helps folks latch onto a reason, when I come to town, which is seldom, if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond's in clutches of whiskey that's why he won't change his ways, he can't help himself..."(182). Social roles have made him hide away from the criticism. It also makes him pretend he is a drunk so he can escape cruelty because he is too afraid to tempt the strict "norms" of Maycomb. The criticism these characters have been through can affect their actions and confidence. Each character, Burris Ewell, Walter Cunningham and Dolphus Raymond, are all in different situations but all have had a negative experience with social roles. Yet, an individual's experience with social roles can be a little different than a whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Social Construction Of Gender And Gender Roles While observing interactions between people of both different and the same genders in the park at Orange Circle, it becomes evident how the social construction of gender and standard gender roles may or may not follow archetypal manner and can be applied differently depending on the individuals. Some of the observations recorded during this period have provided evidence that gender roles and gender stereotypes may be followed or applied in an archetypal way. However, what is most interesting is that the observation of select individuals has delineated the manner by which certain aspects of gender roles are shown to be subverted, challenged, or even reversed. Based on these observations, it can be surmised that people may have a choice in the ways in which the social construction of gender does and does not apply to their lives. As was stated in the introduction, some of the interactions recorded during the observation showed the ways in which socially constructed gender roles are reinforced. This is best exemplified by the interaction between two small children, a girl and a boy, who were playing by the fountain located in the center of the park. The young boy can be described as exhibiting rather aggressive behaviors that include but are not limited to pushing and shoving, throwing objects, and shouting. In contrast, the young girl behaves in a much more submissive manner, reacting to the boy's actions by giggling, smiling and squealing. This example provides ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Social Media And Gender Roles In addition, celebrities use social media as a powerful and influential tool of income having sponsorship from companies and product promotions. As I pointed out on my Blog Post, there are three main ways that celebrities make money off of social media: "They are paid directly by brands they promote, they are paid higher salaries based on the number of followers they have, according to This is how celebrities use you on social media by Jo Piazza and they get all of their products or brands items for free" In other words, many corporations give their products to celebrities for free and ask for posting the picture with products to advertise and promote. They are paid salaries, which depend on how many followers they have. The combination of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I got into details on my Final project, there are a lot of stereotypical representations of gender and gender roles, and stereotypical racial representation as racism in numerous mass mediums. The public are unconsciously disclosed to the stereotypical images of gender representation and racial representation. People do not notice and recognize these, but some sensitive audiences can recognize them. As people have increasingly revealed to the stereotypes of gender and race, they could regard them as the subtitle problems and they could ignore even if they know. Male is usually portrayed as muscular, intelligent, independent, rational, and suitable gender to do outdoor work, however, female is depicted as weak, obedient, beautiful, skinny, dependent, emotional, and suitable gender to do indoor work at home. Moreover, male has always been shown as sexual subject, but female has been portrayed as sexual object. Of course, there is a few media which breaks the stereotypic of gender and gender role representation, but most media have been using that concepts even if females are not necessary to be portrayed as sexual object. By my Final project, there are a huge number of stereotypical representations of gender in paper or online advertisements of apparels, perfumes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Social Roles in Society Essay Social Roles in Society Social psychology, as defined by the Microsoft Bookshelf, is the branch of human psychology that deals with the behavior of groups and the influence of social factors on the individual. Social roles are one of the many sub – categories of social psychology. I believe social roles to be the way we, as individuals, act in certain situations; such as home life, educational and economic statue, peer groups, etc. The Prison Simulation by Haney, Banks & Zimbardo is just one of the vast studies in this area. In this study we will see how people take roles in life, and in simulated life situations. Social roles are not fictitious, it is in fact a very real occurrence that many people deal with ever day, whether it be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I noticed that the inmates that were sentenced to life acted out much more than the inmates that were only sentenced for a few years. At the time I took no great thought into this, but after reading this study I have recalled the prison tour in my mind to critically analyze why this would be. I have come to the conclusion that the life–sentenced prisoners have nothing to lose by acting irrational and making spontaneous decisions. On the other hand, the inmates with the shorter sentences have something to look forward to when getting out. They do not necessarily need to act out to obtain attention, that is not what they are looking for. While looking on the Internet for yet another social role study, I came upon an old friend that also happened to be online. I decided to discuss his situation rather than one of which does not effect me as personally as this. My friend was and I guess still is a victim of alcoholism. My friend Matt is now out of the house and on his own and his parents are now divorced. Matt and I grew up together, so many of his pains I felt as well. While he was growing up his father was quite a heavy drinker and at many times became violent as well as abusive towards Matt, his two younger siblings and his mother. I can remember at times Matt telling me how his father the night before would hit him. Matt would tell me "better it be me then my mother or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
