4. CONTENTS PAGE
The first image is my preliminary task and the second photo is my final cover of my
magazine.
5. Previous to creating my preliminary task front cover and contents page I made two
very basic flat plans, this was before I learnt fully how to construct a professional
looking magazine. For my preliminary task firstly, I used a phone and me and a small
group went around the College taking various photos which I felt I could use. Then I
came back picking the most appropriate photos for a magazine.
Such as…
6. I began constructing my front cover and contents page using Microsoft
Publisher. I made up coverlines, subheading etc. This was rather rushed
as I didn’t fully understand what I had to do to make it successful. Although
it was a disaster, creating this preliminary task gave me a rough idea of
what I wanted the general layout of my magazine to look like.
7. The chosen colours of my headlines
don’t stand out enough. Overall, I
only spent around two hours or less
on the whole planning and
constructing process of my
preliminary task.
My preliminary task appears very
amateur and unrealistic. For
example, the masthead is the
wrong front and doesn’t catch
enough attention, as it isn’t a
contrasting colour to the
background.
From doing this I learnt what didn’t work in a magazine, so therefore I
knew what to change for my final magazine.
8. From my preliminary take I learnt how to manage my time successfully to make sure
everything is done in the given time. Another thing I found important was flat plans as
they give you a general idea of where everything must go, and therefore makes it a lot
easier to follow than doing it free hand.
My preliminary flat plan My magazine flat plan
Comparing the two flat
plans it’s easy to tell my
layout of my magazines
improved, and also I
learnt what conventions
all magazines should
include.
9. From looking through the best selling magazines the main image is crucial,
it must stand out, and it must be good quality!
Looking at my preliminary task I realised my photos weren’t great quality as we used a
phone. For my actual magazine I knew I has to find a camera so the photos were more
clear, therefore it would help make my magazine have a more professional look.
The photos on the
left are my
preliminary task
and the photos on
the right are my
magazine photos
as you can see a
camera with better
quality photos
gives a more
professional look
10. Deconstructing existing
magazine front covers,
contents pages and double
page spreads allowed me
to identify existing
conventions that all
magazines must have.
This helped me understand
why each convention had
been used and what effect it
had on the reader. I had more
of an understanding on what I
must include in my magazine.
11. From experimenting with different fonts in my preliminary task and practice magazine, I
came to grips with what looked better and which fitted better with my target audience. I
learnt that the main focus of the magazine should be the masthead and image, this is a
big part on why my preliminary task didn’t work. The masthead should be the first thing
you see and with my preliminary task it blended in too much. Therefore, I wouldn’t of
done it.
personally I believe the background looked better plain as it draws more attention to the main
image, without my preliminary task I wouldn’t of came across this.
I applied the skills I learnt
to make the masthead and
image stand out much
more.

13. I learnt the importance of the photos, I discovered costumes, props and
make-up were the best way for me to create a magazine appropriate to
my target audience. The final photo’s for my magazine were a lot clearer
and professional in comparison to my preliminary task.
14. I learnt time management importance. I also learnt the
importance of colour scheme, from all my planning I learnt it’s
best to stick with 3 colours as any more can be over bearing.
Another was fonts, the font must link to my audience and
throughout planning I learnt this. The article itself for my
double page spread is important I learnt the amount of
writing and the formality link to my audience. Another big
plus before creating the real thing was playing around with
important software I needed to use such as Photoshop and
Indesign. If I didn’t mess around, I wouldn’t be aware of doing
more technical things with my magazine. I learnt every aspect
of my magazine must link back to my target audience to make
it successful.
