Musk Says Remote Work 'No Longer Acceptable' at Tesla
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has sent an email to the company's executive staff stating that
"Remote work is no longer acceptable." Musk wants employees to spend at least 40 hours
per week at the office or find work elsewhere. Musk also added that under certain
circumstances, he would be willing to consider requests to work remotely. However, it
seems that this consideration will be reserved for "exceptional contributors", and that he
would review and approve those exceptions personally. In a follow-up email, Musk wrote
about his personal history of almost living in the Tesla factory as being one of the reasons
for the company's survival and success. He acknowledged that a lot of companies don't
require a visible presence, but he also compared their product success to Tesla's. After the
global pandemic forced many companies to rapidly allow their employees to work from
home, many are now assessing how they should bring their workforce back into the office,
or whether they even need to in the first place. Some, such as Apple, are testing a hybrid
approach that involves employees coming into the office for just part of the week. Tesla's
hardline stance appears to be going against the flow of the "new normal." Musk's
statement, "If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned," doesn't leave much
room for a hybrid approach.
