Athlete’s Foot
What causes it A microscopic fungus
How is it spread Usually in a moist area the fungus is found like showers It is communicable and can be spread from person to person
Who gets it Anyone can get it but people who spend more time in moist areas such as the pool are more prone to it
Etiology Incubation period 4-10 days Signs and Symptoms are scaling, flaking, and itching of the affected skin, blisters and cracked ribs can also occur Athlete's foot can usually be diagnosed by visual inspection of the skin, if not sure usually a potassium hydroxide (KOH) test Is preformed.
Pathophysiology Is it acute or chronic? 3 categories of Athlete’s foot Chronic interdigital athlete’s foot Chronic scaly athlete’s foot (moccasin type)  Acute vesicular athlete’s foot
Pathophysiology You can get it again but you can prevent it from coming back The foot is affected but the fungus can also spread to the groin
Prognosis and Treatment Athlete’s foot can be prevented by fungicides, keeping your feet clean, keep your feet dry, always wearing clean socks and shoes, and giving your feet a salt soak. The course of treatment for athlete’s foot is several weeks, two times a day Athlete’s foot is terminal
