The Music Video For Radiohead’s ‘ Just’ Is That Of The Rock Genre
1. The music video for Radiohead’s ‘Just’ is that of the rock genre . Within the 1st 10 seconds of the video we are shown a medium zooming in shot of a man undressing in a gloomy looking room. This already follows the conventional rock video as nothing is glamorous but quite bleak and dark . As the music we are shown a long medium shot of a the band beginning to play in a brighter setting . The band are dressed in casual clothes apart from the lead singer who is dressed in a suite , this suggests that he is meant to stand out from the rest of the band . 388620022860205740022860 When the lyrics begin with ‘can’t get the stink off it’s been hanging around for days’ we are shown a medium long shot of a man getting into a bath suggesting that the lyrics will be in keeping with the video’s visuals. After this we are shown repeated but slow cuts of the band playing live and the man in the bath dressed in a smart suite walking down the road who then lies down meaning that there is a narrative with-in this video although it is not clear of it’s relevance to the song . 36576001155701371600115570-914400115570 From a medium shot A pedestrian then falls over the man lying down instead of speaking the audience read what the actors are saying off the screen. This once again follows the conventions of a rock video as it is quite abstract and surreal . Through medium shot we shown a confrontation between the pedestrian who demands to know why the man is lying on the floor , however the man will not tell him . As more and more crowds gather the audience also wants to know why the man is lying on the floor which creates a sense of frustration and tension . 365760039370137160044450-91440039370 As this is happening the music played by the band becomes more frenzied and becomes faster , to add to this sense of frenzy the cuts become more frequent and a lot faster almost causing confusion .When the man lying down tells why he is lying down on the ground no words are shown on screen but the audience can see his lips moving . This means that the audience will never know what he is saying which creates a heightened sense of tension , after the man’s lips have stopped moving we are shown a medium shot of the band looking down at a scene suggesting that the band are in a position of power and are different from those on the streets . -1143000274320 -3746599060247713599060 This would follow the character of rock music which is viewed as different . The final shot we are shown within this video is a high angle zoom in and our of everybody expect for the band lying down in the middle of the road like the man in the beginning . This shows a sense of confusion and difficulty as the audience question why this is happening . Radiohead’s ‘Just’ is presented as an obscure and frustrating video where the band is partially separated from the action but still present in the video
