Project 1: Website or App Analysis
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In order to make the best, most informed, and most ethical decisions about
website or app creation, it helps to first analyze the effects of choices that
other developers have made. For this assignment, you’ll apply the concepts
that we’ve learned in our readings to analyzing a website or app of your
choice.
Format: Your project or deliverable will take the form of a Google Doc photo
essay, combining text (your analysis) with screenshots of the site (and
appropriate arrows, circles, etc.) to support your analysis.
Please structure your analysis using the following prompts (accompanied by
relevant screenshots). Use headings in your paper (for example, “Site Goals
and Purposes”)
1. Describe the “core model” of the site: its goals and purposes, its inward
paths, core content, and forward paths (see Redish, McCoy, and Aalen).
2. Describe the users/personas of the site (see Ginny Redish). Who do you
think are the site’s intended users? What assumptions does it make about its
users, and which users might it unintentionally leave out? Is it designed with
kindness (see Sara Wachter-Boettcher)?
3. . Evaluate the content and design of the site.
 What “conversations” does the site attempt to have with its users? Are
they the right ones? (Redish, Ch 1)
 Is the content well-designed to focus on these conversations and key
messages? (Redish, Ch 7)
 Does the site make “the scent of information" easy to follow? (i.e., is
the content well organized? can users easily find what they need?) (Ch
4-6)
 Are the headings meaningfully named? (Chs 8-9)
 Are the physical page layout, colors, use of space, and typography
based on sound design principles? (Redish, Ch 3)
 Is it accessible to everyone?
GRADING CHART
Quality of analysis.The claims about the site are clear, address all
the questions listed above, and are relevant to the site. The
evaluation of the site follows from the analytical claims, and the
recommendations are reasonable and clear.

Strength of evidence. The writer uses adequate examples from
the site to develop and support his/her claims.

Organization. The report is logically arranged (according to the
structure suggested above); the purpose for the report is clear.

Style and mechanics. The document is professionally formatted,
stylistically competent, and free of grammatical errors.

[ENGL 419] Project 1: Website or App Analysis PROJECT DESCRIPTION In order to make the best, most informed, and most ethical decisions about website or app creation, it helps to first analyze the effects of choices that other developers have made. For this assignment, you’ll apply the concepts that we’ve learned in our readings to analyzing a website or app of your choice. Format: Your project or deliverable will take the form of a Google Doc photo essay, combining text (your analysis) with screenshots of the site (and appropriate arrows, circles, etc.) to support your analysis. Please structure your analysis using the following prompts (accompanied by relevant screenshots). Use headings in your paper (for example, “Site Goals and Purposes”) 1. Describe the “core model” of the site: its goals and purposes, its inward paths, core content, and forward paths (see Redish, McCoy, and Aalen). 2. Describe the users/personas of the site (see Ginny Redish). Who do you think are the site’s intended users? What assumptions does it make about its
  • 2. users, and which users might it unintentionally leave out? Is it designed with kindness (see Sara Wachter-Boettcher)? 3. . Evaluate the content and design of the site.  What “conversations” does the site attempt to have with its users? Are they the right ones? (Redish, Ch 1)  Is the content well-designed to focus on these conversations and key messages? (Redish, Ch 7)  Does the site make “the scent of information" easy to follow? (i.e., is the content well organized? can users easily find what they need?) (Ch 4-6)  Are the headings meaningfully named? (Chs 8-9)  Are the physical page layout, colors, use of space, and typography based on sound design principles? (Redish, Ch 3)  Is it accessible to everyone? GRADING CHART Quality of analysis.The claims about the site are clear, address all the questions listed above, and are relevant to the site. The evaluation of the site follows from the analytical claims, and the recommendations are reasonable and clear. 30 points Strength of evidence. The report is logically arranged (according to the structure suggested above); the purpose for the report is clear. 20 points Style and mechanics.
