Elements such as silver, gold, tin, copper, lead and mercury have been known for centuries. In 1649,
the first scientific discovery of an element was made by Hennig Brand when he discovered
phosphorous. Prior to Brand's discovery, chemists had acquired an immense body of understanding
concerning the properties of elements and their compounds for the next 200 years. By the year 1869,
a collection of 63 elements had been revealed. As the number of known elements increased,
scientists began to notice patterns in properties and formulate classification schemes. In 1862, a
French geologist, A.E.Beguyer de Chancourtois, recorded a list of the elements on a cylinder
regarding their individual atomic weights. He was the first to identify that elemental properties
reoccur every seven elements. There has been some deviation on who deserves credit for being the
"father" of the periodic table, either the German Lothar Meyer or the Russian Dmitri Mendeleev.
Both chemists shockingly produced similar results during the same time period working
individually. Meyer's 1864 textbook included a shortened version of the periodic table, which
contained about half of the known elements ordered by their atomic weight and valence charges. In

who lived received Christian names. Mendeleev's father, Ivan Pavlovich Mendeleev, became blind
the same year Mendeleev was born, which left the family in a difficult position. While Mendeleev's
family was affluent and successful, they did not have excess wealth. After his father became blind
and unable to work, Mendeleev's mother took a job governing her brother's glass factory in hope
that the money would assist in raising her children. The outcome was dismal and eventually the
glass factory burnt down. At age seven, a year earlier than was normally allowed, Mendeleev started
his education at the gymnasium his father had taught at. Throughout his primary education,
Mendeleev was average in all classes except chemistry, where he earned much higher marks. He

proportions. These elements were fire, water, air and earth.

Robert Boyle had an assumption that an element was an individual substance that could not be
broken down further into a smaller substance through the process of a chemical reaction. Boyle's
assumption is considered to be the beginning of modern chemistry.
1789
Antoine Lavoisier created a list of substances that he considered to be elements. He separated his list
of 33 elements into metals and non–metals. Some items on the list were classified as compounds
because they could not be determined to be otherwise, because of the lack of technology and
equipment available at the time.
1820
Jakob Berzelius began to replace the patterns which represented chemical symbols with
abbreviations for the element. He developed a system of organisation based on the weight of an
element, with hydrogen having a value one, and all other elements having a higher value. He used
one universal system.
1829
More chemists began studying elements and their properties. Johann Dobereiner identified 40
elements and noticed similar properties between the elements. He noticed that different groups of
elements had a similar atom structure.

Group 14 of the periodic table contains a mixture of non–metals (carbon and silicon), a metalloid
(germanium), and two metals ( tin and lead). Tin is able to form dihalides and tetrahalides such as
SnI2 and SnI4. However, lead will not form tetrahalides as readily as tin3. The tetrahalides of lead
will decompose into dihalides due to their instability 3. The stability of the compounds is based on
their respective oxidation states. Periodic trends suggest that group 14 oxidation states are normally
– 4 as it is increasingly energetically favorable for them to accept electrons in order to complete
their valence shells 3. However, due to the metallic properties of tin and lead, they generally lose
electrons and therefore have a positive oxidation state. It is a characteristic trend to see heavier
elements of the p block forming compounds in which their oxidation number is 2 (less than the
group number 3 ). The heavier the atom, the more stable it is in the lower oxidation state. This is due
to the inert pair effect 3. This can be correlated to the amount of energy needed to remove an
electron (ionization energy), since in the higher oxidation state the p–block electrons and the s–
block electrons are removed, while in the lower oxidation state, it is only the p–electrons that are

Elements such as silver, gold, tin, copper, lead and mercury have been known for centuries. In 1649, the first scientific discovery of an element was made by Hennig Brand when he discovered phosphorous. Prior to Brand's discovery, chemists had acquired an immense body of understanding concerning the properties of elements and their compounds for the next 200 years. By the year 1869, a collection of 63 elements had been revealed. As the number of known elements increased, scientists began to notice patterns in properties and formulate classification schemes. In 1862, a French geologist, A.E.Beguyer de Chancourtois, recorded a list of the elements on a cylinder regarding their individual atomic weights. He was the first to identify that elemental properties reoccur every seven elements. There has been some deviation on who deserves credit for being the "father" of the periodic table, either the German Lothar Meyer or the Russian Dmitri Mendeleev. Both chemists shockingly produced similar results during the same time period working individually. Meyer's 1864 textbook included a shortened version of the periodic table, which contained about half of the known elements ordered by their atomic weight and valence charges. Mendeleev was one of 17 children in his house hold. He is known for the periodic table we use today which was created in 1869. Although at the time he only had 65 elements, his periodic table was the one that stood out the most with, elements organized in increasing atomic weight and grouping them by similarity of properties. Throughout the years more and more elements were being discovered and in total there are 118 elements. What Dmitri did to discover the periodic table was that he wrote all of the 65 elements on separate cards and wrote the atomic weight along with the properties. He re–arranged the cards so that he could find a pattern which he did and wrote it on a piece of paper. He later on published the periodic table in the Principles of Chemistry in 1869.
