Editor's Notes
The book I choose to read and report on is Twitterville. Twitterville is written by author Shel Israel.
Shel Israel is the author of Twitterville. He is also known for co-writing ‘Naked Conversations'’, a best seller. He has been working with various communication tools in his work for over 30 years. Shel is an active video blogger. His main focus is on social media and the impact it has had on the cultural and business world. In Shel’s free time he enjoys gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
Twitter is constantly evolving. Shel mentions several reasons people initially build a Twitter account such as; distributing company information, getting closer to customers, joining or building a community or marketplace, providing customer support, generating sales leads, spotting trends, spotting the competition, and understanding what customers think about you. However, as times change the reasons to join Twitter will change as well. Shel advises being opened to the changes in Twitter use. Although , most users join the Twitter network for a specific purpose this purpose can change along with time. I thought that the 8 tips in Twitterville given by Shel can be very useful. They taught me personally how to better access Twitter and use it for my personal advantage. His 8 tips, which are discussed in more detail in the book, say: Show yourselfRead first. Talk Later.Post Second. Follow Later.Friends Over Stars.Avoid Spammer StatsHave Favorites.Take Your Time. Think Neighborhood. These tips can appeal to a wide variety of Twitter members.3. The use of Twitter as a personal brand is something that I have heard mentioned several times in class. However it has not been described in as much detail as Shel provides in Twitterville. He discussed the importance of the viewers response to your personal brand. Succesful branding is based on 2 way communication between the sender and the receiver. When you build a Twitter account it becomes your personal brand. You are the sender. Your followers or profile viewers become the receivers. It is your job to make sure your personal brand portrays the message you are trying to send.
Upon reading Twitterville, I had no idea that a live-tweet surgery had ever been performed. When I read this I was very surprised, I was even more surprised when I read the details about it. The purpose of this tweet session was for medical education. As surgeons performed surgery to remove a prostate cancer, 2 other surgeons tweeted the process as it was occurring. This idea was an effective way to communicate with a large viewing audience.
After reading Twitterville I want to get more involved with Twitter. I created an account a while ago but have not really used it much. I think one of the reasons I haven’t used it is because I only know how to use it for social purposes. After reading Israels’ book I want to learn how to use my Twitter for marketing purposes and as a tool to create my personal brand image. If you do not already have a Twitter account the link on the left side of the slide will show you how to get started. For people who have an existing account and want to better understand how to use Twitter for marketing, the video link on the right will provide helpful information.
