2. • This concept of gaze is how the audience respond to and
look at the music video. Feminist would look at a video
and three things would be thought about: how men look
at women, how women look at themselves and how
women look at other women. Mulvey put forward that
audiences have to view characters from the viewpoint of
a heterosexual man.
THE CONCEPT
3. • Features of this idea of the male gaze are the camera
lingering on the curves of the female body with the events
that happen to that female largely over exaggerated by the
males reaction to these particular events. The female is
often made to look a lot more sexual even if this is not
relevant to what is actually going on within the song .
This idea regulates females as objects, the female must
then experience the narrative by identification with the
male.
FEATURES
4. • THE SPECTATORS GAZE:
The audience look at the person who is on the screen.
• THE MALE GAZE:
The male viewing the female either voyeuristically or fetishistically.
• THE FEMALE GAZE:
Accepts women can gain voyeuristic pleasure from looking at the person on the
screen.
• THE INTRA DIEGETIC GAZE:
The gaze of one artist of another within the narrative world of the media
production.
• THE EXTRA DIEGETIC GAZE:
The gaze of an artist out of the narrative to the audience. Making eye contact
and connoting that they are aware they are being watched

6. As you can see from these images of Miley Cyrus in her new song
‘Wrecking Ball’ Mulveys theory can be applied to her song. In this
song Miley is presented as a sexual object for the viewer, typically
the male viewer to watch. As you can see from the first image there
is the use of the extra diegetic gaze as she is giving direct mode of
address to the audience. The second image is what the male will
gaze at due to the fact she is on a ball which is used when using
heavy machinery. Something they will enjoy a lot (a hot girl on a
mans ‘toy’. Again showing they are viewing Miley as part of that
object rather than a woman. This is a voyeuristic technique to
ensure the male audience will continue watching it to get pleasure,
as they will have no real connection to the lyrics.
