Achilles Analysis
Hector is standing outside of Troy as the only Trojan left. Hector is too ashamed to join the other
Trojans in their retreat because of his previous orders for them to camp outside although Priam begs
him to come inside. Hector stood firm as Achilles approached him and Hector knows that Achilles
has come to fight by the evil look in Achilles' eyes. Hector is willing to fight and will not go down
without putting up a fight for his home. Hector at first tries to negotiate with the great warrior,
Achilles, because he knows he doesn't stand a chance in battle but Achilles does not even consider
any of the negotiations because Achilles wants revenge for the death of Patroklos. Hector realized
that and gave up on trying to negotiate with Achilles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"And ran, leaving the gates behind, with Achilles on his tail, confident in his speed. You have seen a
falcon in a long smooth dive, attacking a fluttering dove, far below in the hills. The falcon screams,
swoops, and plunges in its lust for prey, so Achilles swooped and Hector trembled in the shadow of
Troy's wall." (156–167). This simile is about the chase between Hector and Achilles. Homer uses
this simile brilliantly whereas he compares Achilles the great warrior to the ruthless bird, falcon,
which will get its prey. Homer compares this chase to a predator–prey situation, just like a falcon
and a dove, eventually, the predator will catch up to its prey and attack. Just like Achilles will
eventually do when he catches his prey, Hector. Zeus debates whether he should save Hector or not
but the goddess Athena persuades Zeus to let be because Hector's time has come. Achilles knows the
weak points of the armor that Hector is armed with and thrusts his spear through Hector's throat.
While Hector is nearing his death, he pleads with Achilles so that his body can be sent back to the
Trojans for a proper burial. Just like how the falcon leaves its prey after devouring what it wants, the
falcon leaves the body left to rot, as what Achilles did with Hector where he let the dogs and birds
maul at the dead body. Achilles then tied Hector's body to the back of his chariot and drags it around
through the dirt

Shield Of Achilles
Hope often contrasts with reality, especially within Greek mythology or similar replications. For
instance, The Shield of Achilles is written by W.H. Auden in the form of a ekphrasis and details the
content on the Shield of Achilles; The Shield of Achilles juxtaposes the idea of hope portrayed by
Thetis versus reality shown through Hephaestus (further referenced as Hep). The speaker in The
Shield of Achilles is blunt in showing Thetis' imagery of tranquility, peace and liveliness in
comparison to Hep´s imagery of actuality, war and idleness. Tranquility often becomes contradicted
by what is happening in actuality. As shown in the first four lines of the poem, the speaker´s attitude
is blunt; which is seen when "She looked over his shoulder for vines and olive trees, marble well–
governed cities and ships upon untamed seas"(Lines 1–4). These lines are straight to the point in
showing that Thetis looked over Hep's shoulder and was looking for three things. Thetis, Greek
mother of Achilles instructed Hep´s, Greek god of blacksmiths to make her son a shield with certain
items on it. Thetis wanted things that showed tranquility and items that represented the reverenced
aspect of Greek culture. These items show imagery of Greece being calm and undisturbed, another
things that can be inferred is Thetis, being a mother and only wanting the best things for Achilles
including his safety in a calm city. These items are juxtaposed with actuality when Hephaestus has
done the complete opposite of what Thetis has instructed. Hephaestus created "on the shining metal,
his hands had put instead an artificial wilderness and a sky like lead"(Lines 5–8). A shift occurs
when Hep places the reality of what the Greeks are facing, which is a place that is becoming altered
by man. He also chooses to place what he wants to place on the shield, instead of what Thetis has
instructed him place. Negative diction also occurs when the speaker uses a world like artificial
which usually has a negative connotation that often indicates fakeness, as well as a sky instead of
being blue and happy is dark heavy metal. Peace, a time of quietness once again ruined by threats of
a war occurring. Thetis again "looked over his shoulder for ritual

Achilles : An Invulnerable Achilles
"It's all Greek to me."
An invulnerable mortal? Keep reading to get more information on the famous Greek hero Achilles.
Achilles' Greek name is Achilles but unfortunately has no Roman name as they all called him upon
his one name. He was a strong, young, and open–minded Greek leader during the Trojan War(1194–
1184 BC) and in fact was one of the most important heroes during the war slaying the Trojan hero
Hector outside of the gates of Troy. Achilles did not have any "powers" per se as he was only a
mortal and not a god. However, his mother Thetis was very concerned with her sons mortality and
had a plan to make him invulnerable. So on one night she secretly grabbed Achilles and brought him
to the River Styx. She then dipped him into the magical waters making him invulnerable. Without
regard to his heel that she was holding, his heel had never touched the water making it the only part
of his body with a human–like quality. This is how we got the name "Achilles heel" as we still use to
this day. Then as he was just a young child at the age of nine, a seer told Thetis that Achilles would
heroically die in battle. After hearing this, Thetis disguised Achilles in feminine attire and sent him
off to live on the Aegean island of Skyros where Achilles spent most of his life.
In Greek Mythology it states that Achilles was born to Thetis the Nereid and Paleus, the King of
Fthia in Thessaly Greece. According to Greek Mythology.com, "Thetis was a sea nymph in Greek
mythology,

Life Of Achilles
Achilles Chris Erickson's book titled The Poetics of Fear, states that there are disturbing conditions.
The risk of inevitable destiny by nuclear holocaust has faded away, generally, just to be supplanted
by a substantial gathering of more elusive, however no less deadly threats. Fear based persecution,
affliction, revolt states, religious radicalism, environmental disaster, wrongdoing, money related
crisis, disastrous occasion, all take a stab at our thought as the most startling prospect. (Erickson 1).
Jonathan Burgess S. book titled the death and After Life of Achilles states that the downfall and the

Memnon are likely in any occasion contemporaneous with the Iliad, iconography of Memnon

that Memnon is post–Homeric should in like manner observe that depictions of the duel among
Achilles and Hektor don't go before those of Achilles and Memnon; frankly, pictures of Hektor
doing combating Achilles are phenomenal even in the sixth century, and are frequently non–
Homeric at that. (Burgees

Hector And Achilles : The Values Of Achilles And Hector
For the ancient Greeks, culture is of the utmost importance. Greek family values are so strong that
elements of tradition and culture transcend many generations. One particular tradition, literature, is a
custom that has been passed down from generation to generation. Thousands of families, from their
parents to their children, are told the stories of men and women who grew up and became great
warriors that saved the world. These children later grew up with the goal of becoming those same
heroes; they grew up wanting to save the world just like the characters in the stories. In this
particular epic, we encounter the characters of Achilles and Hector, both ideal warriors; one uses his
physical aptitude, the other his intellect and desire to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This just emphasizes how Achilles was not just concerned about his soldiers and showing face, but
he was more driven by his rage and his grudge against Agamemnon for what he did to him.
Hector on the other hand, is a more sympathetic hero than Achilles. Hector is the leader of the
Trojan forces in this epic poem. He is driven by the idea of protecting his home and his family; he is
driven by a sense of responsibility. While Achilles is stuck on the idea of having his ego hurt, Hector
is focusing on more important things, demonstrating his selflessness. When Hector, comes to see his
son after battle, the child screams with horror at the sight of the armor. Hector understands his child
in an instant and takes off his helmet, with its giant horsehair plume, then bends over, picks his boy
up and embraces him, while Andromache looks on happily. Hector goes on to say...
"Jove," he cried, "grant that this my child may be even as myself, chief among the Trojans; let him
be not less excellent in strength, and let him rule Ilius with his might. Then may one say of him as
he comes from battle, 'The son is far better than the father.' May he bring back the blood–stained
spoils of him whom he has laid low, and let his mother's heart be glad.'"
This scene demonstrates what is most important to Hector, and the type of person that he is. He can

Apollo And Achilles
The Trojan war hero, Achilles, and the Greek god Apollo share an uncontrollable rage, which
revealed itself throughout The Iliad. An example of their wild anger is at the beginning of The Iliad,
when Agamemnon irrationally took two women to be slaves for himself and Achilles. Chryses, the
father of Agamemnon's servant, pleaded to the god Apollo for assistance in returning his daughter
home. Infuriated, Apollo sent plague–carrying arrows upon Agamemnon's camp for nine
consecutive days. In a fiery argument with Agamemnon, Achilles was seriously considering killing
Agamemnon, but Athena intervened, and the furious Achilles swore that Agamemnon would
become the core of the wrath of Zeus. Both Achilles and Apollo acted rashly and wickedly towards

Socrates And Achilles
Socrates and Achilles: the Martyr Heroes
Madelyn Vogel
ILS 205
By comparing himself to the Greek hero Achilles before the jury in Plato's Apology, Socrates
attempts to portray himself as a hero of equal merit to Achilles and others of similar standing. By
selecting the greatest of the Classical Greeks to compare and contrast himself to in his argument,
Socrates surreptitiously urges his audience to view him as being of the same caliber as Achilles. This
not only authenticates Socrates' claims, but also exhibits his disconnect from earlier forms of
thought. Essentially, Socrates attempts to display himself in the same light as his predecessor
Achilles through their shared aspiration to do what they deem to be right in addition to their ... Show

At the battle of Troy, Achilles chooses almost certain death in exchange for the honor of avenging
Patroclus. As Socrates paraphrases, "when his mother said to him, as he was eager to slay Hector,
'My son, if you avenge the death of your friend Patroclus and kill Hector, you yourself shall die; for
straightway, after Hector, is death appointed unto you," (The Apology, 28c). However, Socrates is
relatively loose in his representation of Achilles. Homer's Achilles is focused primarily on private
affairs as seen when he only agrees to return to battle to avenge personal loss in the form of his
"beloved" Patroclus (The Iliad, book 18, 120). Contrastingly, Socrates represents the Greek hero as
being much more absorbed by the necessity of attaining honor and justice for both himself and his
peers. Through this specific example, Socrates makes it apparent that, he, like Achilles before him,
is both willing and able to die if that is what it takes to find truth. He will under no circumstances
condemn any of his actions just to save his life. Socrates' primary motivation for comparing himself
to Achilles, the best of all the classic heroes, is to convince the jury of his Achillean heroism. One
attribute of a hero according to the events of the Iliad is that one must either kill or be killed in the
pursuit of honor. Correspondingly, the Iliad chronicles Achilles' life and death on the natural path to
heroism. Despite the

The major war, at the Bronze Age, end of thirteenth century is described in the epic Iliad by Homer
that underlines suffering as a major theme as the effect of battles. It happened in the city of Troy due
to avenge the abduction of Helen, daughter of Zeus and wife of one of the Greek kings, by a Trojan
prince. Many characters in the epic go through a lot of suffering. Achilles, king of Phthia, greatest
warrior in the poem fights in the battles, loses his best friend while his honor and integrity means so
much to him and this dilemma causes him suffering. Priam, king of Troy, suffers crucial loss of his
most beloved son, Hector that is killed by Achilles in madness. Helen, as many other women in this

Achilles : Achilles And Odysseus
What makes a man great? The Ancient Greek definition of a great man was based on the concept of
arete, or, moral virtue. Arete was considered one of the key elements that an Ancient Greek man
(especially a nobleman or a hero) should possess, it was the ability to "...make his hands keep his
head against enemies, monsters, and dangers of all kinds, and to come out victorious."1 In the
Homeric epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, both Achilles and Odysseus provide examples of this
trait. However, Odysseus is the better man because he more closely fits the role of a hero, leader of
men, and shows greater faithfulness of character.
All Homeric heroes, while sharing in most general abilities, always have one specific skill for which
they are best known. Achilles is known for his extreme strength, which he uses to defeat his enemies
in battle. Whereas Odysseus is known for his great intelligence, which he uses to trick and beguile
his enemies. "I am Odysseus son of Laertes, known before all men for the study of crafty designs,
and my fame goes up to the heavens."2 Achilles often utilizes his strength in cruel ways. An
example of this brute force is the manner in which Achilles reacts to the death of his closest friend,
Patroclus. He seeks out the man who killed Patroclus, Hector, and brutally slays him, afterward
mutilating his corpse by dragging it from the end of his chariot around the burial place of Patroclus.
Brute force is in every way inferior to intelligence. An intelligent man may win a fight with a strong
man because he skillfully employs what he knows of combat to trick and to outlast his competitor,
even if he be the physically weaker man. Additionally, the ideas of an intelligent man may be passed
on through the centuries, by imparting his wisdom into the minds of his descendants or by writing
them down. Strength, however, cannot be transferred merely through hearing or reading words.
Odysseus is a more humane and mature character than Achilles, as is seen in the way in which he
handles tragedy. Achilles, upon hearing of Patroclus' death, flew into a mindless rage, whereas
Odysseus (who suffered more than Achilles and for far longer) always bore his ill–fortune with a
maturity and soundness of mind.

Essay On Achilles
Agamemnon warns Achilles of what is to come to him very early on: You may be a good man in a
fight, Achilles, And look like a god, but don't try to put one over on me– It won't work. So while you
have your prize, You want me to sit and do without?...
I'll just go take something myself, Your prize perhaps... (140–143, 147–148)
The two warriors are locked in battle for who is the greatest warrior. Agamemnon, although weaker
than Achilles, has greater status and power. Plagued by the Gods, a simple return of Chryseis is all
that is required to lift the suffering yet the idea of losing a possession and having to forfeit what
Agamemnon feels is his is too humiliating of a price to pay. Achilles constantly attempts to prove
his power by calling assemblies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Furious, anger like twin black thunderheads seething/ In his lungs, and his eyes flickered with fire"
(109–110) This shows that Agamemnon struggles with anyone speaking against him and he needs
glory and pride. Again, Achilles attempts to belittle the king and taunts him about where a new,
worthy war prize would be found. In response, Agamemnon informs Achilles that he will find a fair
prize, perhaps Achilles beloved war prize. The demand shows that Agamemnon cannot stand to be
doubted and how "Someone issues an order or makes a request to others for status and rank"
(Donlan) this ensures that there is no question in the ranking of men. Nester even attempts to settle
the childish dispute by informing both men that they are in the wrong, but both view this as
blasphemy and only deepens their need for glory. Agamemnon, "Did not forget his spiteful threat
against Achilles" (332), and uses Patroclus, the dearest friend of Achilles, to take Briseis.
Agamemnon's use of Patroclus is a painful and personal defeat for Achilles which means it is a
sweeter and more prideful moment for Agamemnon; that he can use someone so dear to Achilles'
heart to bring him such suffering. Achilles retreats,

Achilles As A Hero
In the book The Iliad, by Homer, the main character, Achilles, is a Greek warrior who is part divine
and part human. During the story, Achilles undergoes the steps in becoming a hero. Each of these
steps prepares him for the final moment, when he becomes a hero. Achilles is a hero because he
goes through many of the steps necessary in the path to becoming a hero. The first set of major steps
that Achilles undergoes is the call to adventure, the refusal to the call to action, and the meeting with
the mentor. In Book 1 of the Iliad, Achilles is called to fight against the Trojan's to reclaim Helen,
Menelaus wife. Later in the war, Chryseis and Briseis are taken as prizes from a battle. They are the
daughters of a priest of Apollo named Chryses. After Chryses begs for his daughters back, the
Greeks decide to give Briseis to him and have Chryseis stay. Chryseis belonged to Achilles as his
prize from the battle and Briseis belonged to Agamemnon, a political leader of the Greeks.
Agamemnon then humiliate Achilles by taking Chryseis Achilles's prize, for himself. This angered
Achilles greatly and caused him to leave the Greek army, albeit temporary. This serves as Achilles
refusal to the call of battle. Achilles's anger is shown in Book 1 lines 188 to 192, these lines show
how much Achilles's pride affects his actions and how he responds to conflict. In this situation, his
pride is hurt greatly, to the point where he almost kill Agamemnon, however Athena stops him.

Achilles: Achilles And Achilles
Every reader would find it difficult to choose one favorite character from The Iliad. Within the book,
you pity most. Many soldiers fight in battle just because one Trojan insulted one Greek by stealing
his wife, Helen. It's easy to hate Helen and Paris because they are to blame for the tragic end of the
heroes, Achilles and Hector.
How could you choose between the breaker of horses and the godlike mortal? Both possess qualities
of an excellent soldier and a leader. As perfect as they seem, both characters do have flaws. From
the very first page of the book, it states that Achilles' anger has caused several deaths. "Rage ––
Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless
losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, but made their bodies carrion,
feasts for the dog and birds, and the will of Zeus was moving towards its end" (Homer, 77). His
anger was fueled by Agamemnon's act of claiming Briseis after ransoming off Chrysis back to her
father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the poem, it becomes evident that Achilles is not a man of kindness. He is quite the opposite;
Achilles is ruthless, selfish, and vain. He rages on and wishes for the Achaean army to be severely
weakened to the point that Agamemnon begs for his return to claim victory. In the end of the book,
Achilles successfully kills Hector, the protector of Troy. While Achilles is glorified for his act, the
praise dies down within the readers when he humiliates the body. He drags it around the corpse of
Patroclus, refusing to give Hector the proper funeral rites. This act angers many of the deathless
gods and goddesses. Even with these flaws, Achilles possesses good characteristics. His kindness
towards Briseis and Patroclus cannot be ignored. While these moments are rare, it becomes clear
that Achilles has a softer, more human side. Another reason to like him is

Achilles Vs. Hector : Achilles And Hector
Essay #2 Homer's The Iliad describes majority of the war that went on between the Greek and
Trojan, which included the warriors Achilles and Hector. Throughout the poem the similarities and
the differences became evident between the main characters, Achilles and Hector. Although Achilles
and Hector are considered two different types of heroes, they had their similarities as much as they
had their differences. Both Achilles and Hector were the greatest warriors of their armies, and both
are very stubborn when it comes to their honor. The differences between the two of them is that
Hector is a family man, while Achilles never married nor had children, and the two are fighting for
purely two different reasons, Achilles is fighting for his blood thirst and glory, while Hector fights to
defend his people and family. Achilles starts fighting for revenge, while Hector fights to defend
Trojan. After Patroclus was killed by Hector, Antilochus told Achilles. "A black cloud of sorrow
came upon Achilles as he heard", and tells his mother that Hector must die from his spear, he "must
pay for Patroclus' death"(149–151). Achilles loses all his humanity and has no mercy after his friend
had been killed; however Hector holds on to his humanity while fighting. Achilles began killing
Trojans mercilessly until he got what he wanted, because the vengeance for his friend mattered more
than his humanity. Achilles also did not feel remorse when he slaughtered Hector in front of his

Achilles : The Modern Character Of The Achilles
I can relate Achilles the modern character of the Avengers, from the marvel movies. They are super
heroes who stop the villains but usually cause a lot of destruction to the city in the process of
stopping these villains. It's not a direct relation in their morals, but more a relation to the dramatic
irony in the character of Achilles. Achilles doesn't want to fight and says he will not go to war and
issues this ultimatum to Agamemnon even though he is the best fighter and will hurt the others by
not fighting. This is dramatic irony because Achilles doesn't think he is doing any wrong by saying
this, when in fact he is and we as an audience can clearly see this even if the character can't. I can
relate this to the characters of the Avengers because they all think they are doing a good thing by
saving the civilians from the enemies who are trying to take over the world. They do save the city
from the enemies, but they usually end up destroying the city and sometimes hurt civilians in the
process even though they think they saved the world and did no harm. The Avengers are also
representing dramatic irony because they think they are only doing what is best, however as an
audience we can see by doing the good by killing the villain they are also causing tremendous
damage to the city which is bad.
One thing I find interesting and strange is the quote on line 83 from Calchas "Achilles, beloved of
Zeus, you want me to tell you about the rage of Lord Apollo, the Arch–Destroyer. And

The Great Achilles, great for his passion, skills in the art of war, however, something eerily stands of

why? Why would the poet choose to focus on the wrath of Achilles more than anything in The

leading to the gut–wrenching revenge inflicted upon Hector, it is clear as day that Achilles's wrath is

Achilles : Hector Or Achilles
In his epic poem The Iliad, Homer reveals his hero to be Achilles, not Hector, as Achilles posses
more heroic virtues: honor, divine favor, and growth. Although Homer does not present Hector as
unheroic, he does show him to be possessing of fewer heroic virtues than Achilles, revealing
Achilles instead to be the hero of The Iliad. To begin, Homer demonstrates that Achilles, not Hector,
meets all the requirements of honor: courage, accomplishment, strength, status, possessions.
Although, Hector does meet some of the requirements of honor, he meets significantly less than
Achilles by only demonstrating courage and status. First, both Achilles and Hector demonstrate
courage. In Book XXII, Achilles shows courage when he charges alone onto the battlefield to
avenge the death of his friend Patroclus (XXII.25–31). This represents courage because although it
was dangerous for Achilles to head towards Troy alone, he did so anyway and pushed past the
danger. However, Hector also exhibits courage, perhaps more so than Achilles, when he leaves the
walls of Troy alone to face Achilles, knowing that his is a suicide mission (XXII.40–42). In fact, his
father Priam pleaded with him saying "alone like that, without any support– you'll go down in a
minute" (XXII.47). Hector's firm stance to stay and fight Achilles despite the impending danger
demonstrates his tremendous courage. However, in this scene there is a loser and a winner, who

5. Describe and explain the importance of the Shield of Achilles. Be sure to discuss the shield as an
example of the microcosm and macrocosm of the Greek world.
The Shield of Achilles was used by Achilles in his fight with Hector. Achilles was given this shield
by his mother but made by the god Hephaestus. " The shield itself was five layers thick, and he
Crafted its surface with all of his genius" (Homer 254). In the Iliad it goes on to explain more in
detail. The shield is not only a weapon, but it can also be seen as a microcosm image of the Greek
world. "...for Homer, the Greek world was itself imaged in the shield of Achilles, which functioned
as a microcosm of the totality of macrocosm, in this case, a restatement of a kind of Greek creation
account..." (Jay).

In Homer's "The Iliad", we come across Achilles and Hector. Both characters are seen as brave
soldiers of great honor, yet they have very different opposing traits. Hector is a compassionate man,
who would do anything possible to fight for his family. While Achilles on the other hand, though he
can be compassionate, he is also a man of immense pride who can be selfish and would do anything
to protect his honor, even at the cost of others demise or destruction "...Achilles' rage, Black and

He had a more genuine reason to not participate in the war but he chose to fight for his family and
his city instead. Hector has a wife and a son, and could have chosen to stay with them instead of
fighting the battle that his brother started after abducting Helen. However, Hector knew he had an
obligation to fight for his city, hence did not run away from his responsibilities. His wife
Andromache begged him to stay when he visited her and their son because she was afraid that he
would die at the battlefield "Your courage Is going to kill you, and you have no feeling left for your
little boy or for me" (Homer 430). Hector advised Andromache that he could not run away from his
fate. If he was destined to die in the battlefield, then there was nothing he could do to change that,
he also told her that he was doing this for her and Astyanax, their son, because they might end up as
slaves if he is not successful. Hector could have told his father and Paris that he was not going to get
involved in the war since he did not personally cause it, just like Achilles told Agamemnon "I don't
have any quarrel with the Trojans, they didn't do anything to me to make me come over and fight"
(Homer 160). However, he is a man of reason and feels a sense of duty that overpowers any fears he

As cliché and overused as the statement is, heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. When
one thinks about the heroes throughout The Iliad, great and powerful warriors such as Hector and
Achilles immediately come to mind. However, heroes are not limited to fighting men. Heroes are
those that are willing to risk their lives for the greater good of their people. For this reason, I
consider Priam, the king of Troy, to be a hero. He is adamant in his resolve to recover the body of
his dead son, Hector; moreover, his quest to do so involves confronting the short–tempered and
unpredictable Achilles. Not only is the ransom that king Priam provides ridiculously generous, but

Priam's determination to recover the body goes further than the love of a father; it represents the
devotion a ruler has for his citizens. Not only will Priam take great comfort in the proper burial of
his son, but the Trojans will take solace knowing their greatest warrior and symbol of honor has
been returned to his native homeland. In addition to the homecoming of the body of Troy's most
honorable warrior, the great enemy warrior in Achilles agrees to a truce as well. Priam, a king with
the backing of an entire Trojan army, takes matters into his own hands and risks his life for his city
of Troy. Even though he does not have to, he does the dirty work in a respectful, mature, and
responsible way. Priam refuses to listen to his comrades, who fear the danger he is putting himself
in, and he even does the unthinkable: bowing down and begging at the knees of the man that killed
his son. His quest to claim Hector's body is just as honorable and courageous as the determination
Hector shows in bringing Troy victory. Luckily for Priam, Achilles is understanding and

There is a fine line between a villain and hero. Not only are deeds taken into consideration, but
actions as well. Much like real life, it is never easy knowing who plays what role until the final

Does not the means justify the end? Achilles had a struggle within himself as well as externally with
Agamemnon. Achilles had to decide whether he should be taken advantage of to help his city or go
against his principles to save his pride. During Achilles time, the Greeks considered him a hero due

His departure was not a sign of cowardice. He was trying to prove a point to Agamemnon that his

Troy could not fall without the help of Achilles, as prophesied by Calchas.Achilles had to make a
tough decision prior to just letting them walk into their own deaths. Agamemnon demanded that
Achilles' bride and war prize Briseis be given to him. Achilles believed that the demand was unjust
and resembled that of Paris' kidnapping Helen. He was in the same position as Menelaos. The
argument between himself and Agamemnon was as righteous as war to Achilles. Even though
Agamemnon offered to return Briseis and other numerous gifts, Achilles stays angry. This does
indicate one of Achilles' flaw: excessive pride. Agamemnon may have offered gifts, but none
amount to the public insult that Achilles had suffered. Achilles would rather have his pride restored
then have anything in the world. Agamemnon also has a history of given and taken back gifts
resulting in empty

Achilles refused extra service, and therefore the Greeks were very defeated because Achilles
allowed Patroclus to come like him, giving him his car and his weapons. Hector (King Priam's first
son of Troy) killed Patroclus, and Achilles, who eventually joined Agamemnon, received new
weapons from Hephaestus and killed Hector. After hitting the body of Hector behind his car,
Achilles gave Priam to his hard request. Iliad has ceased with the Hector funeral ceremony. It does
not mention the death of Achilles, though the Odyssey says its funeral. Poetry Arctinus in his

Achilles Leadership
Commanders of armies throughout history and the world have lead their soldiers into battle and
fought alongside them. Often, they are on the front line and put themselves in the same danger as
their soldiers. As a King, Agamemnon had the responsibility to his soldiers to motivate and fight
with them. Although his motivation for honor and victory never changed, his leadership over his
soldiers evolves from self–interest to doing what is best for his soldiers.
The story begins with Agamemnon putting his pride before his soldiers needs when he dishonored
Chryses, Apollo's priest. He kidnapped Chryses' daughter and when Chryses came with a ransom,
Agamemnon "dismissed [him] with a rough speech" (1.33), treating Chryses with less respect than a

Achilles : An Invulnerable Achilles
"It's all Greek to me."
An invulnerable mortal? Keep reading to get more information on the famous Greek hero Achilles.
Achilles' Greek name is Achilles, but unfortunately has no Roman name as they all called him upon
his one name. He was a strong, young, and open–minded Greek leader during the Trojan War (1194–
1184 BC) and in fact was one of the most important heroes during the war slaying the Trojan hero
Hector outside of the gates of Troy. Achilles did not have any "powers" per se, as he was a mortal
and not a god. However, his mother Thetis was very concerned with her son's mortality and had a
plan to make him invulnerable. So one night, she secretly grabbed Achilles and brought him to the
River Styx. She then dipped him into the magical waters, making him invulnerable. Without regard
to his heel that she was holding, his heel had never touched the water, making it the only part of his
body with a human–like quality. This is how we got the name "Achilles heel" as we still use to this
day. Then, as he was just a young child at the age of nine, a seer told Thetis that Achilles would
heroically die in battle. After hearing this, Thetis disguised Achilles in feminine attire and sent him
off to live on the Aegean island of Skyros where Achilles spent most of his life.
In Greek Mythology it states that Achilles was born to Thetis the Nereid and Paleus, the King of
Phthia in Thessaly Greece. According to greekmythology.com, "Thetis was a sea nymph in Greek

During the Illiad, Achilles is seen as a man of strength and virtue while being regarded as the best
Greek warrior of the Trojan War. While Achilles seems to have no weakness within him or inside
him, his heel is the only body part that is not completely protected and his ill–temper seems to be a
downfall of this great fighter. Encompassed by his many great outward qualities, the actions of a
man from his inside shows what his true character is. Among his true inner characteristics, the main
ones that show in the play are his pride, his unpredictability, and his rage. Achilles demonstrates his
pride in many different situations throughout the Illiad. The first example can be seen in the
beginning of the story when Achilles' war prize, Briseis, is taken away from him. His pride is hurt
not only because of the taking away of a woman he is fond of, but his pride takes a hit because of
Agamemnon embarrassing him in front of the other warriors which leads to Achilles withdrawing
himself from the Greek army. Without the greater warrior in the Greek army, Agamemnon swallows
his pride and offers Achilles three gifts. Shortly after, the pride of this great warrior is shown when
he rejects the gifts of Agamemnon because of the damage done in the beginning of the ... Show

Rage is a key component that is paramount throughout the Greek epic shown through the warrior.
For example, the death of Patroclus becomes a burden to avenge in the heart of his protector,
Achilles. Through many battles, Achilles shows his rage at the hands of many deaths of mortals,
including Hector. Achilles' rage is directed toward all the Trojan army as he tries to deny the burial
rights of their leader for their wrongdoings toward his friend. His anger makes Achilles who he is

Iliad 21.70–135 (Lykaon supplicates Achilles, Achilles kills him)
Consider Achilles' response to supplication in this passage. How does this compare to his attitude in
the extracts from the Iliad in your lecture/tutorial readings?
The cruel rejection by Achilles to the supplication of Lykaon in Book 21 represents a fundamental
transformation in the attitude of Achilles. Achilles has become full of anger and self–loathing
following the death of Patroclus. Achilles answers Lykaon's supplication by stating, "I reject this
childish plea for mercy, and I will accept no ransom. Until Patroclus died, I often spared suppliants,
and sold them abroad; but now all Trojans I catch will die, especially all sons of King Priam!"

Achilles has been tipped over the edge by the blame he feels for failing his responsibilities and
completely loses his grip on reality. Achilles no longer adheres to the moral and social standards that
were previously so important to him in his quest for personal glory. The old values Achilles held are
no longer relevant and he has lost all sense of right versus wrong. Achilles atrocious acts are
symbolic of the war raging inside his mind. In his vengeful slaying of the Trojans he is
metaphorically trying to kill himself over and over again. At this point Achilles is completely
obsessed on obtaining revenge by killing Hector and absolutely nothing will stop him achieving this
aim. Achilles is now in a psychological traumatic state of mind.
Achilles wrath reaches its pinnacle when he kills Hector, as he declares, "at last I am avenged!"
(Graves 1960 22:317). It would now be reasonable to expect that from this moment on Achilles
anger would begin to subside with the relief of his revenge. We would rightfully expect to begin to
see the return of the old Achilles as previously told, "but there is no gall in Achilleus' heart, he is
forgiving" (Lattimore 2011 2:240) however this is most certainly not the case. Instead Achilles anger
is further and even more disturbingly demonstrated by his mutilation of Hectors body. Achilles has
not found peace in his revenge whatsoever instead he becomes more deranged than ever. The death

Achilles : Achilles And The Characters Of Achilles
Achilles was a very powerful warrior. Legends said that he was even power than the gods. Achilles
had only one weakness his heel. One day Achilles was walking around, and you can see the sorrow
and worries on his face. Apollo was sitting on a top of a tree looking and Achilles walking back and
forth in a very unsettled way. Apollo jumped out of the tree and asked Achilles what is wrong with
him. Achilles refused to tell him at the beginning but Apollo kept asking him so end up telling him.
Apollo told Achilles that he does not have to worry anymore because he know a magical fruit that
will turn Achilles heel invulnerable just like his body. Apollo said that the fruit is pink with a little
bit of green from the outside and it's white with black seeds from the inside. Achilles excitement

grows in the top mountains of china. Achilles got so excited and started to run back to his home so
he can pack his stuff to go to china. Athena came to him and asked him where he is going. He told
her that he is going to China to get the magical fruit that Apollo told him about so his heel will be

Anger Of Achilles : The Great Warrior Achilles
Anger of Achilles
"ANGER – sing, goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that accursed anger, which brought

What is anger and how does it influence the body? Anger is a powerful emotion. If it isn't handled
appropriately, it may have destructive results for you and those closest to you. Uncontrolled anger
can lead to arguments, physical fights, physical abuse, assault and self–harm. On the other hand,
well–managed anger can be a useful emotion that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is ultimately slaughtered by Hector. Achilles hearing this news sets aside his anger towards
Agamemnon and channels it towards hector to revenge his falling companion Patroclus. Before
doing so Achilles had to wait for his mom to return from Mount Olympus with a new set of armor
for him to fight in because his armor was lost to Hector (Iliad 3–337).
Secondly, there was Patroclus who was the servant and companion to Achilles. Patroclus seeing the
pain and the suffering that was coming to the Greeks without Achilles fighting. This gave him a
sense of obligation to join the war to help his fellow comrades. So he persuades Achilles to loan him
his armor and Achilles tells Patroclus to bring honor and glory to him in the eye of the Greeks on the
battlefield. Patroclus is ultimately killed when he is dazed and stripped of his armor by the god
Apollo. He is first stabbed by Euphorbus and then finished off by the mighty hector (Iliad 274–298).
Then, there is Hector of the flashing helmet the leader of the Trojans and one of their strongest
warriors. Hector is the brother of Paris the character that kidnapped Helen of Sparta. There was no
doubt that Hector would be killed by the mighty Achilles after he slaughter his companion and
friend Patroclus. It was even prophesized by Patroclus in his dying breathes that he would fall to

upon the Achaians, . . . and the will of Zeus was accomplished since that time when first there stood
in division of conflict Attreus' son the lord of men [Agamemnon] and brilliant Achilles" (Homer I.
1–7). The beginning epithet of Homer's Iliad briefly summarizes Achilles' character arc: he is
exposed to injustice, he gets angry, then he deals his brand of justice. Homer's beginning epithet also
describes the Greek gods' self–focused reaction toward injustice and their apathetic inclination
toward humanity. When Achilles acted as a magnanimous man, a god, he was pitiless and unbiased

Patroklos' mortality devastates Achilles; not just because he loved Patroklos, but also because
Patroklos' death signifies his own mortality: "He spoke and the black cloud of sorrow closed on
Achilles. In both hands he caught up the grimy dust , and poured it over his head and face, and
fouled his handsome countenance, and the black ashes were scattered over his immortal tunic"
(XVIII. 22–25). Achilles was prophesied to live a short life filled with boundless fighting and war,
and the death of Patroklos guaranteed Thetis and Zeus' prophecy. From Achilles' perspective, this is
an injustice because it diminishes his role as a god. How can Achilles be a better man than all of the
Achaians if he is destined to die like Patroklos? This confirms Achilles speculations in Book IX: no
matter the proficiency or god–like stature of humans, they are all mortal. Homer uses Achilles'
character arc to explore the contrasts between the humans and the gods; Homer depicts this
incongruity as one fact– humans are

The Warrior Achilles
The warrior Achilles, within the final year of the Trojan War, has shown why he is a skilled warrior
and revved individual, nearly godlike. In addition to that, at times throughout the lliad, showing his
humanity in moments that have touched him dearly. As it is portrayed throughout the lliad, when it
came down between the embassies of Priam and Agamemnon's, it would be a decision which
Achilles makes ultimately for his own reasoning and benefit. It would be Priam, who would be able
to sway the great Achilles in the return of his son's body, while Agamemnon's would ultimate fail. It
would be for the reason which Priam and Achilles shared in a moment of loss for individuals they
cared for deeply. That it is with the aid of Priam's embassy, that Achilles is able to further reach in
achieving his goal of honor and undying fame.
The relationship or lack thereof between Achilles and Agamemnon would put them at odds
constantly, both having different agendas and views in regards to the war. Early in the beginning, we
saw that honor was an important factor for Achilles, which was a part of his ultimate end goal. In the
scene between Achilles and his mother, he says, "Mother, since you bore me for a short life only,
Olympian Zeus was supposed to grant me honor. Well, he hasn't given me any at all. Agamemnon

Achilles And Achilles : The Hero Of The Iliad
In the Iliad there are many characters that could be considered heroic. But the two main characters
that stand out as heroes to me are swift–footed Achilles and flashing–helmet Hector. Numerous
times throughout the epic they display qualities and traits that are unsurpassed by anyone on their
side. Many times throughout the epic Achilles and Hector are tested for their strength, and will to
win in battle, which for both warriors always ends up positive because they always win their battles.
Although both fighters are among the elite status in the armies, they each show human and god–like
qualities that help them be as a fierce and feared as possible.
As soon as we are exposed to Achilles in battle, it is obvious why he is the hero of the Achaeans. He
is very devoted, and even the heat of battle does not faze him, as he mows down rows and rows of
his opponents. His devotion in battle is suitably shown when he is talking of battle:
"I have no taste for food– what I really crave is slaughter and blood and the choking groans of men"
(Homer Book 19 line 255)
Although this quote is very gory, it shows his taste for fighting and how badly he wants to be great.
When Achilles was young he was given the choice from his Mother, Thetis Goddess of the Sea, he
could either be a great warrior, have a ton of glory, be remembered for ever but would have to die

Essay on Achilles
From the very beginning of the poem, the character Achilles is one of the major foci of the story. His
actions of lack of actions have enormous effects upon how the plot unfolds. Starting with the fight
with Agamemnon and his withdrawal from the battle, to the death of Patroklos, and finally to the
slaying of Hektor, Achilles and his emotions decide the fate of many Greek and Trojan warriors. It is
his struggle against his anger, pride, loyalty, and love that make this poem one of a tragic nature,
rather than just a gruesome account of a war. Although the reputation of Achilles claims him to be
the perfect warrior, strongest of the Greeks, the poem spends more time on the man than on his
reputation. I think the most obvious presentation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus I feel his behaviour throughout these books where he is moved to battle is a function of his
personality acting under tremendous pain and grief.
A better place to view Achilles is in the first book. The argument that Achilles presents at the
beginning of the poem is very rational and heartfelt and surprises me that it took ten years for it
finally to get mentioned. Achilles sheds light on the fact that all the Greeks are at Troy to fight over
the pride and honour of Agamemnon's brother and is brave enough to stand up to the king and call
him greedy and selfish. His lack of hatred towards the Trojans as a people is easily seen in his
statements about how the people of Troy had never wronged him prior to the conflict. This
sympathy for the Trojans comes back in the final book where Achilles promises Priam twelve days
of cease–fire to mourn and bury Hektor. This action, as I have said earlier, seems strange when set
so close to the death of Hektor, but in context with Achilles earlier, it is not hard to believe that he
would do this. Achilles is a very passionate man, not just in warfare but in his feelings for his close
friends and family and for people in general. Of all enemies, the Trojans are very hard not to like or
at least be pitied. All the Trojans, except for Paris, are good–hearted family men who are defending
their homes, wives, and

Differences Between Achilles And Achilles
In his book, The Encyclopedia of Greek and Roman Mythology, Roman states that,
The Greek concept of the hero was not based on a calculation of the warrior's social utility and
helpfulness in straightforward terms; rather a hero's greatness is defined by how extraordinary he is,
how far he transcends the lives of ordinary mortals (2010:8).
This essay will compare the greatest hero of the Trojan War, Achilles with the strongest hero of
Ancient Greece, Herakles. It will also discuss how they compare to their modern day representations
in cartoons, movies and pop culture.
These two very well–known heroes of Ancient Greek mythology were both born from one mortal
and one immortal parent. While their bravery, battle skills and strength have earned them a place in
the history books there are also some differences between these heroes. Achilles, the protagonist of
Homer's epic, the Iliad, was the son of Peleus, a mortal king and Thetis, a sea nymph and daughter
of Neseus (Roman 2010:7). One version of the story describes Achilles as the only surviving child
of this marriage, after Thetis had murder six of her children by burning them (Pinsent 1983:114). A
later version states that his mother tried to protect him when he was born by dipping him in the river

yet again after the birth of his children from his first wife, Megara. She drove him mad, which

sons he was ordered to perform the famous Twelve Labours in order to purify himself (Roman
2010:210). This would also later ensure his immortality however. These would not be the last tasks
he would have to complete in penance for his anger and impulsive

The Iliad and Achilles
Achilles was fundamentally passionate in nature which is the foundation of the heroic characteristics
and qualities described by Homer in The Iliad. The character exhibited emotions which were
responsible for heroic forcefulness that was provoked by and reacted to the actions of others, and
interpreted as reactions to provocations; however, at the center of the emotions is anger. In the Iliad,
Homer portrays Achilles as a character with multiple temperaments ranging from superhuman
strength and courage, vengeful and quick to anger and could be petulant when conditions were not
favorable, to deeply loyal and would sacrifice anything for friends and family. The character of
Achilles reflected attributes of a lover of war, vengeful and intense anger, love, suffering, pain, and
heroic duty.
Homer's story focuses on a battle that took place before Book 11 of The Iliad when Agamemnon ad
taken as a concubine a young Trojan woman named Chryseis. Chryseis' father, a priest of Apollo,
tried to buy the freedom of Chryseis, but Agamemnon mocked the request and refused to release the
girl. Angered by the decision, Apollo punished the Greek armies by sending a plague to kill the
soldiers one by one. As the ranks thinned Agamemnon finally agreed to allow Chryseis to return
home, however, a replacement was demanded in exchange: Achilles' wife, the Trojan princess
Breseis. Achilles obediently relinquished his bride, and then angrily announced there would no

The saying "nothing can beat the classics" is really tested when it comes to the book The Song of
Achilles, written cleverly by Madeline Miller since this book is based on The Iliad, written
approximately 3000 years ago by none other than the great Homer. Like many other great books
reimagined, the story has a couple of changes here and there but Miller focuses rather on a character
that does not get as recognition, is not the strongest fighter in all of Greece, does not have the
brightest mind, but is the "Philatos [...] Best of men" (Miller 349). In brief, what Patroclus realizes
throughout the story is that love requires the willingness to make sacrifices for their beloved ones

Achilles Rage
In book one of the Iliad, Homer debunks Achilles rage as both dishonorable and duplicitous.
Achilles may demonstrate great courage and strength, but he is severely deficient in the other
qualities of an epic hero: temperance, magnanimity, and a sense of loyalty. His rage masked all these
essential attributes. Though he is known as the most skilled and strong warrior, that doesn't make up
for the fact that Achilles acts upon his emotions, not his mind. Think of Achilles as a pot of water on
a stove; calm and still until interrupted. Agamemnon is the heater and what causes Achilles to boil.

Achilles and Duryodhana Analysis
A quick comparison between the characters Achilles in the Iliad and Duryodhana in the
Mahabharata suggests that they are extremely similar. Both characters are hard–headed, full of
pride, and their eventual demises both occur because of a certain weakness in their invulnerability
related to their mothers' oversight. At closer glance, one notices that while they share many traits,
the role Achilles plays is much different from Duryodhana's. An examination of each character's
motives and the context of the story they are placed in reveals that Duryodhana is clearly the
antagonist in the Mahabharata while Achilles appears to be the tragically flawed hero of the Iliad.
Some of the similarities between the two characters are obvious. Both come from nobility. Achilles
is a Myrmidon prince while Duryodhana is a Kauravan prince. Both princes are also considered to
be exceptional warriors, and they are frequently complimented on their amazing fighting abilities.
Achilles is described as a "frenzied god of battle" while Duryodhana is also frequently praised in his
great skill with weapons such as his mace (Homer 519).
While they may be great warriors, the two men often let their stubbornness and pride take rein of
their emotions. When King Agamemnon snatches Briseis, a woman Achilles had captured from the
town of Lyrnessus, Achilles swears that he will never again fight under Agamemnon nor "do

may rue his blindness in offering insult to the foremost of the Achaeans" (Book I). By doing this he
his essentially killing his countrymen, brothers–in–arms, and even friends for the fact his slave
women was taken by the commander–in–chief of the Achaean army. If it were not for the case of
him returning to aid his army again, this operation of betraying his own army who have single
handedly lost them the war. Moving on, his own rage yet again changes the landscape of the war
against the Trojan

Achilles and Hector: The Values that Defined Them (38 characters

  • 1. Achilles Analysis Hector is standing outside of Troy as the only Trojan left. Hector is too ashamed to join the other Trojans in their retreat because of his previous orders for them to camp outside although Priam begs him to come inside. Hector stood firm as Achilles approached him and Hector knows that Achilles has come to fight by the evil look in Achilles' eyes. Hector is willing to fight and will not go down without putting up a fight for his home. Hector at first tries to negotiate with the great warrior, Achilles, because he knows he doesn't stand a chance in battle but Achilles does not even consider any of the negotiations because Achilles wants revenge for the death of Patroklos. Hector realized that and gave up on trying to negotiate with Achilles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "And ran, leaving the gates behind, with Achilles on his tail, confident in his speed. You have seen a falcon in a long smooth dive, attacking a fluttering dove, far below in the hills. The falcon screams, swoops, and plunges in its lust for prey, so Achilles swooped and Hector trembled in the shadow of Troy's wall." (156–167). This simile is about the chase between Hector and Achilles. Homer uses this simile brilliantly whereas he compares Achilles the great warrior to the ruthless bird, falcon, which will get its prey. Homer compares this chase to a predator–prey situation, just like a falcon and a dove, eventually, the predator will catch up to its prey and attack. Just like Achilles will eventually do when he catches his prey, Hector. Zeus debates whether he should save Hector or not but the goddess Athena persuades Zeus to let be because Hector's time has come. Achilles knows the weak points of the armor that Hector is armed with and thrusts his spear through Hector's throat. While Hector is nearing his death, he pleads with Achilles so that his body can be sent back to the Trojans for a proper burial. Just like how the falcon leaves its prey after devouring what it wants, the falcon leaves the body left to rot, as what Achilles did with Hector where he let the dogs and birds maul at the dead body. Achilles then tied Hector's body to the back of his chariot and drags it around through the dirt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Shield Of Achilles Hope often contrasts with reality, especially within Greek mythology or similar replications. For instance, The Shield of Achilles is written by W.H. Auden in the form of a ekphrasis and details the content on the Shield of Achilles; The Shield of Achilles juxtaposes the idea of hope portrayed by Thetis versus reality shown through Hephaestus (further referenced as Hep). The speaker in The Shield of Achilles is blunt in showing Thetis' imagery of tranquility, peace and liveliness in comparison to Hep´s imagery of actuality, war and idleness. Tranquility often becomes contradicted by what is happening in actuality. As shown in the first four lines of the poem, the speaker´s attitude is blunt; which is seen when "She looked over his shoulder for vines and olive trees, marble well– governed cities and ships upon untamed seas"(Lines 1–4). These lines are straight to the point in showing that Thetis looked over Hep's shoulder and was looking for three things. Thetis, Greek mother of Achilles instructed Hep´s, Greek god of blacksmiths to make her son a shield with certain items on it. Thetis wanted things that showed tranquility and items that represented the reverenced aspect of Greek culture. These items show imagery of Greece being calm and undisturbed, another things that can be inferred is Thetis, being a mother and only wanting the best things for Achilles including his safety in a calm city. These items are juxtaposed with actuality when Hephaestus has done the complete opposite of what Thetis has instructed. Hephaestus created "on the shining metal, his hands had put instead an artificial wilderness and a sky like lead"(Lines 5–8). A shift occurs when Hep places the reality of what the Greeks are facing, which is a place that is becoming altered by man. He also chooses to place what he wants to place on the shield, instead of what Thetis has instructed him place. Negative diction also occurs when the speaker uses a world like artificial which usually has a negative connotation that often indicates fakeness, as well as a sky instead of being blue and happy is dark heavy metal. Peace, a time of quietness once again ruined by threats of a war occurring. Thetis again "looked over his shoulder for ritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Achilles : An Invulnerable Achilles "It's all Greek to me." An invulnerable mortal? Keep reading to get more information on the famous Greek hero Achilles. Achilles' Greek name is Achilles but unfortunately has no Roman name as they all called him upon his one name. He was a strong, young, and open–minded Greek leader during the Trojan War(1194– 1184 BC) and in fact was one of the most important heroes during the war slaying the Trojan hero Hector outside of the gates of Troy. Achilles did not have any "powers" per se as he was only a mortal and not a god. However, his mother Thetis was very concerned with her sons mortality and had a plan to make him invulnerable. So on one night she secretly grabbed Achilles and brought him to the River Styx. She then dipped him into the magical waters making him invulnerable. Without regard to his heel that she was holding, his heel had never touched the water making it the only part of his body with a human–like quality. This is how we got the name "Achilles heel" as we still use to this day. Then as he was just a young child at the age of nine, a seer told Thetis that Achilles would heroically die in battle. After hearing this, Thetis disguised Achilles in feminine attire and sent him off to live on the Aegean island of Skyros where Achilles spent most of his life. In Greek Mythology it states that Achilles was born to Thetis the Nereid and Paleus, the King of Fthia in Thessaly Greece. • 7. Life Of Achilles Achilles Chris Erickson's book titled The Poetics of Fear, states that there are disturbing conditions. The risk of inevitable destiny by nuclear holocaust has faded away, generally, just to be supplanted by a substantial gathering of more elusive, however no less deadly threats. Fear based persecution, affliction, revolt states, religious radicalism, environmental disaster, wrongdoing, money related crisis, disastrous occasion, all take a stab at our thought as the most startling prospect. (Erickson 1). Jonathan Burgess S. book titled the death and After Life of Achilles states that the downfall and the great beyond of Achilles would seem to have little to do with Homer: Achilles does not kick the container in the Iliad, and the Homeric ... Those smart to expect that Memnon is post–Homeric should in like manner observe that depictions of the duel among Achilles and Hektor don't go before those of Achilles and Memnon; frankly, pictures of Hektor doing combating Achilles are phenomenal even in the sixth century, and are frequently non– Homeric at that. • 9. Hector And Achilles : The Values Of Achilles And Hector For the ancient Greeks, culture is of the utmost importance. Greek family values are so strong that elements of tradition and culture transcend many generations. One particular tradition, literature, is a custom that has been passed down from generation to generation. Thousands of families, from their parents to their children, are told the stories of men and women who grew up and became great warriors that saved the world. These children later grew up with the goal of becoming those same heroes; they grew up wanting to save the world just like the characters in the stories. In this particular epic, we encounter the characters of Achilles and Hector, both ideal warriors; one uses his physical aptitude, the other his intellect and desire to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This just emphasizes how Achilles was not just concerned about his soldiers and showing face, but he was more driven by his rage and his grudge against Agamemnon for what he did to him. Hector on the other hand, is a more sympathetic hero than Achilles. Hector is the leader of the Trojan forces in this epic poem. He is driven by the idea of protecting his home and his family; he is driven by a sense of responsibility. While Achilles is stuck on the idea of having his ego hurt, Hector is focusing on more important things, demonstrating his selflessness. When Hector, comes to see his son after battle, the child screams with horror at the sight of the armor. Hector understands his child in an instant and takes off his helmet, with its giant horsehair plume, then bends over, picks his boy up and embraces him, while Andromache looks on happily. Hector goes on to say... "Jove," he cried, "grant that this my child may be even as myself, chief among the Trojans; let him be not less excellent in strength, and let him rule Ilius with his might. Then may one say of him as he comes from battle, 'The son is far better than the father.' May he bring back the blood–stained spoils of him whom he has laid low, and let his mother's heart be glad.'" • 11. Apollo And Achilles The Trojan war hero, Achilles, and the Greek god Apollo share an uncontrollable rage, which revealed itself throughout The Iliad. An example of their wild anger is at the beginning of The Iliad, when Agamemnon irrationally took two women to be slaves for himself and Achilles. Chryses, the father of Agamemnon's servant, pleaded to the god Apollo for assistance in returning his daughter home. Infuriated, Apollo sent plague–carrying arrows upon Agamemnon's camp for nine consecutive days. In a fiery argument with Agamemnon, Achilles was seriously considering killing Agamemnon, but Athena intervened, and the furious Achilles swore that Agamemnon would become the core of the wrath of Zeus. • 13. Socrates And Achilles Socrates and Achilles: the Martyr Heroes Madelyn Vogel ILS 205 By comparing himself to the Greek hero Achilles before the jury in Plato's Apology, Socrates attempts to portray himself as a hero of equal merit to Achilles and others of similar standing. By selecting the greatest of the Classical Greeks to compare and contrast himself to in his argument, Socrates surreptitiously urges his audience to view him as being of the same caliber as Achilles. This not only authenticates Socrates' claims, but also exhibits his disconnect from earlier forms of thought. Essentially, Socrates attempts to display himself in the same light as his predecessor Achilles through their shared aspiration to do what they deem to be right in addition to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the battle of Troy, Achilles chooses almost certain death in exchange for the honor of avenging Patroclus. As Socrates paraphrases, "when his mother said to him, as he was eager to slay Hector, 'My son, if you avenge the death of your friend Patroclus and kill Hector, you yourself shall die; for straightway, after Hector, is death appointed unto you," (The Apology, 28c). However, Socrates is relatively loose in his representation of Achilles. Homer's Achilles is focused primarily on private affairs as seen when he only agrees to return to battle to avenge personal loss in the form of his "beloved" Patroclus (The Iliad, book 18, 120). Contrastingly, Socrates represents the Greek hero as being much more absorbed by the necessity of attaining honor and justice for both himself and his peers. Through this specific example, Socrates makes it apparent that, he, like Achilles before him, is both willing and able to die if that is what it takes to find truth. He will under no circumstances condemn any of his actions just to save his life. Socrates' primary motivation for comparing himself to Achilles, the best of all the classic heroes, is to convince the jury of his Achillean heroism. One attribute of a hero according to the events of the Iliad is that one must either kill or be killed in the pursuit of honor. Correspondingly, the Iliad chronicles Achilles' life and death on the natural path to heroism. Despite the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It happened in the city of Troy due to avenge the abduction of Helen, daughter of Zeus and wife of one of the Greek kings, by a Trojan prince. Many characters in the epic go through a lot of suffering. Achilles, king of Phthia, greatest warrior in the poem fights in the battles, loses his best friend while his honor and integrity means so much to him and this dilemma causes him suffering. • 17. Achilles : Achilles And Odysseus What makes a man great? The Ancient Greek definition of a great man was based on the concept of arete, or, moral virtue. Arete was considered one of the key elements that an Ancient Greek man (especially a nobleman or a hero) should possess, it was the ability to "...make his hands keep his head against enemies, monsters, and dangers of all kinds, and to come out victorious."1 In the Homeric epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, both Achilles and Odysseus provide examples of this trait. However, Odysseus is the better man because he more closely fits the role of a hero, leader of men, and shows greater faithfulness of character. All Homeric heroes, while sharing in most general abilities, always have one specific skill for which they are best known. Achilles is known for his extreme strength, which he uses to defeat his enemies in battle. Whereas Odysseus is known for his great intelligence, which he uses to trick and beguile his enemies. "I am Odysseus son of Laertes, known before all men for the study of crafty designs, and my fame goes up to the heavens."2 Achilles often utilizes his strength in cruel ways. An example of this brute force is the manner in which Achilles reacts to the death of his closest friend, Patroclus. He seeks out the man who killed Patroclus, Hector, and brutally slays him, afterward mutilating his corpse by dragging it from the end of his chariot around the burial place of Patroclus. Brute force is in every way inferior to intelligence. An intelligent man may win a fight with a strong man because he skillfully employs what he knows of combat to trick and to outlast his competitor, even if he be the physically weaker man. Additionally, the ideas of an intelligent man may be passed on through the centuries, by imparting his wisdom into the minds of his descendants or by writing them down. Strength, however, cannot be transferred merely through hearing or reading words. Odysseus is a more humane and mature character than Achilles, as is seen in the way in which he handles tragedy. Achilles, upon hearing of Patroclus' death, flew into a mindless rage, whereas Odysseus (who suffered more than Achilles and for far longer) always bore his ill–fortune with a maturity and soundness of mind. ... Essay On Achilles Agamemnon warns Achilles of what is to come to him very early on: You may be a good man in a fight, Achilles, And look like a god, but don't try to put one over on me– It won't work. (140–143, 147–148) The two warriors are locked in battle for who is the greatest warrior. Agamemnon, although weaker than Achilles, has greater status and power. Plagued by the Gods, a simple return of Chryseis is all that is required to lift the suffering yet the idea of losing a possession and having to forfeit what Agamemnon feels is his is too humiliating of a price to pay. "Furious, anger like twin black thunderheads seething/ In his lungs, and his eyes flickered with fire" (109–110) This shows that Agamemnon struggles with anyone speaking against him and he needs glory and pride. Again, Achilles attempts to belittle the king and taunts him about where a new, worthy war prize would be found. In response, Agamemnon informs Achilles that he will find a fair prize, perhaps Achilles beloved war prize. The demand shows that Agamemnon cannot stand to be doubted and how "Someone issues an order or makes a request to others for status and rank" (Donlan) this ensures that there is no question in the ranking of men. Nester even attempts to settle the childish dispute by informing both men that they are in the wrong, but both view this as blasphemy and only deepens their need for glory. Agamemnon, "Did not forget his spiteful threat against Achilles" (332), and uses Patroclus, the dearest friend of Achilles, to take Briseis. • 21. Achilles As A Hero In the book The Iliad, by Homer, the main character, Achilles, is a Greek warrior who is part divine and part human. During the story, Achilles undergoes the steps in becoming a hero. Each of these steps prepares him for the final moment, when he becomes a hero. Achilles is a hero because he goes through many of the steps necessary in the path to becoming a hero. The first set of major steps that Achilles undergoes is the call to adventure, the refusal to the call to action, and the meeting with the mentor. In Book 1 of the Iliad, Achilles is called to fight against the Trojan's to reclaim Helen, Menelaus wife. Later in the war, Chryseis and Briseis are taken as prizes from a battle. They are the daughters of a priest of Apollo named Chryses. After Chryses begs for his daughters back, the Greeks decide to give Briseis to him and have Chryseis stay. Chryseis belonged to Achilles as his prize from the battle and Briseis belonged to Agamemnon, a political leader of the Greeks. Agamemnon then humiliate Achilles by taking Chryseis Achilles's prize, for himself. This angered Achilles greatly and caused him to leave the Greek army, albeit temporary. This serves as Achilles refusal to the call of battle. Achilles's anger is shown in Book 1 lines 188 to 192, these lines show how much Achilles's pride affects his actions and how he responds to conflict. In this situation, his pride is hurt greatly, to the point where he almost kill Agamemnon, however Athena stops him. Achilles says ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Achilles: Achilles And Achilles Every reader would find it difficult to choose one favorite character from The Iliad. Within the book, you pity most. Many soldiers fight in battle just because one Trojan insulted one Greek by stealing his wife, Helen. It's easy to hate Helen and Paris because they are to blame for the tragic end of the heroes, Achilles and Hector. How could you choose between the breaker of horses and the godlike mortal? Both possess qualities of an excellent soldier and a leader. As perfect as they seem, both characters do have flaws. From the very first page of the book, it states that Achilles' anger has caused several deaths. "Rage –– Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, but made their bodies carrion, feasts for the dog and birds, and the will of Zeus was moving towards its end" (Homer, 77). His anger was fueled by Agamemnon's act of claiming Briseis after ransoming off Chrysis back to her father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the poem, it becomes evident that Achilles is not a man of kindness. He is quite the opposite; Achilles is ruthless, selfish, and vain. He rages on and wishes for the Achaean army to be severely weakened to the point that Agamemnon begs for his return to claim victory. In the end of the book, Achilles successfully kills Hector, the protector of Troy. While Achilles is glorified for his act, the praise dies down within the readers when he humiliates the body. He drags it around the corpse of Patroclus, refusing to give Hector the proper funeral rites. This act angers many of the deathless gods and goddesses. Even with these flaws, Achilles possesses good characteristics. His kindness towards Briseis and Patroclus cannot be ignored. While these moments are rare, it becomes clear that Achilles has a softer, more human side. Another reason to like him is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Achilles Vs. Hector : Achilles And Hector Essay #2 Homer's The Iliad describes majority of the war that went on between the Greek and Trojan, which included the warriors Achilles and Hector. Throughout the poem the similarities and the differences became evident between the main characters, Achilles and Hector. Although Achilles and Hector are considered two different types of heroes, they had their similarities as much as they had their differences. Both Achilles and Hector were the greatest warriors of their armies, and both are very stubborn when it comes to their honor. The differences between the two of them is that Hector is a family man, while Achilles never married nor had children, and the two are fighting for purely two different reasons, Achilles is fighting for his blood thirst and glory, while Hector fights to defend his people and family. Achilles starts fighting for revenge, while Hector fights to defend Trojan. After Patroclus was killed by Hector, Antilochus told Achilles. "A black cloud of sorrow came upon Achilles as he heard", and tells his mother that Hector must die from his spear, he "must pay for Patroclus' death"(149–151). Achilles loses all his humanity and has no mercy after his friend had been killed; however Hector holds on to his humanity while fighting. Achilles began killing Trojans mercilessly until he got what he wanted, because the vengeance for his friend mattered more than his humanity. • 27. Achilles : The Modern Character Of The Achilles I can relate Achilles the modern character of the Avengers, from the marvel movies. They are super heroes who stop the villains but usually cause a lot of destruction to the city in the process of stopping these villains. It's not a direct relation in their morals, but more a relation to the dramatic irony in the character of Achilles. Achilles doesn't want to fight and says he will not go to war and issues this ultimatum to Agamemnon even though he is the best fighter and will hurt the others by not fighting. This is dramatic irony because Achilles doesn't think he is doing any wrong by saying this, when in fact he is and we as an audience can clearly see this even if the character can't. I can relate this to the characters of the Avengers because they all think they are doing a good thing by saving the civilians from the enemies who are trying to take over the world. They do save the city from the enemies, but they usually end up destroying the city and sometimes hurt civilians in the process even though they think they saved the world and did no harm. The Avengers are also representing dramatic irony because they think they are only doing what is best, however as an audience we can see by doing the good by killing the villain they are also causing tremendous damage to the city which is bad. One thing I find interesting and strange is the quote on line 83 from Calchas "Achilles, beloved of Zeus, you want me to tell you about the rage of Lord Apollo, the Arch–Destroyer. And ... • 29. The Great Achilles The Great Achilles, great for his passion, skills in the art of war, however, something eerily stands of in his almost dominating, charismatic character. His wrath is that of none. The merciless Achilles, why? Why would the poet choose to focus on the wrath of Achilles more than anything in The Illiad? From his apparent distain towards Agamemnon, to his seething anger towards the Gods, leading to the gut–wrenching revenge inflicted upon Hector, it is clear as day that Achilles's wrath is one of the most highlighted attributes of any character in English language today. You may feel as though your personal pride and ego play apart in your daily lives, as for the feud between Achilles and Agamemnon, one could argue they wouldn't inhale a single breathe not being in the name of their honor. • 31. Achilles : Hector Or Achilles In his epic poem The Iliad, Homer reveals his hero to be Achilles, not Hector, as Achilles posses more heroic virtues: honor, divine favor, and growth. Although Homer does not present Hector as unheroic, he does show him to be possessing of fewer heroic virtues than Achilles, revealing Achilles instead to be the hero of The Iliad. To begin, Homer demonstrates that Achilles, not Hector, meets all the requirements of honor: courage, accomplishment, strength, status, possessions. Although, Hector does meet some of the requirements of honor, he meets significantly less than Achilles by only demonstrating courage and status. First, both Achilles and Hector demonstrate courage. In Book XXII, Achilles shows courage when he charges alone onto the battlefield to avenge the death of his friend Patroclus (XXII.25–31). This represents courage because although it was dangerous for Achilles to head towards Troy alone, he did so anyway and pushed past the danger. However, Hector also exhibits courage, perhaps more so than Achilles, when he leaves the walls of Troy alone to face Achilles, knowing that his is a suicide mission (XXII.40–42). In fact, his father Priam pleaded with him saying "alone like that, without any support– you'll go down in a minute" (XXII.47). Hector's firm stance to stay and fight Achilles despite the impending danger demonstrates his tremendous courage. The Shield of Achilles was used by Achilles in his fight with Hector. Achilles was given this shield by his mother but made by the god Hephaestus. " The shield itself was five layers thick, and he Crafted its surface with all of his genius" (Homer 254). In the Iliad it goes on to explain more in detail. The shield is not only a weapon, but it can also be seen as a microcosm image of the Greek world. "...for Homer, the Greek world was itself imaged in the shield of Achilles, which functioned as a microcosm of the totality of macrocosm, in this case, a restatement of a kind of Greek creation account..." • 35. Compare Achilles And Achilles In Homer's "The Iliad", we come across Achilles and Hector. Both characters are seen as brave soldiers of great honor, yet they have very different opposing traits. Hector is a compassionate man, who would do anything possible to fight for his family. However, Hector knew he had an obligation to fight for his city, hence did not run away from his responsibilities. His wife Andromache begged him to stay when he visited her and their son because she was afraid that he would die at the battlefield "Your courage Is going to kill you, and you have no feeling left for your little boy or for me" (Homer 430). Hector advised Andromache that he could not run away from his fate. If he was destined to die in the battlefield, then there was nothing he could do to change that, he also told her that he was doing this for her and Astyanax, their son, because they might end up as slaves if he is not successful. Hector could have told his father and Paris that he was not going to get involved in the war since he did not personally cause it, just like Achilles told Agamemnon "I don't have any quarrel with the Trojans, they didn't do anything to me to make me come over and fight" (Homer 160). • 37. Priam And Achilles As cliché and overused as the statement is, heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. When one thinks about the heroes throughout The Iliad, great and powerful warriors such as Hector and Achilles immediately come to mind. However, heroes are not limited to fighting men. Heroes are those that are willing to risk their lives for the greater good of their people. For this reason, I consider Priam, the king of Troy, to be a hero. He is adamant in his resolve to recover the body of his dead son, Hector; moreover, his quest to do so involves confronting the short–tempered and unpredictable Achilles. Not only will Priam take great comfort in the proper burial of his son, but the Trojans will take solace knowing their greatest warrior and symbol of honor has been returned to his native homeland. In addition to the homecoming of the body of Troy's most honorable warrior, the great enemy warrior in Achilles agrees to a truce as well. Priam, a king with the backing of an entire Trojan army, takes matters into his own hands and risks his life for his city of Troy. Even though he does not have to, he does the dirty work in a respectful, mature, and responsible way. Priam refuses to listen to his comrades, who fear the danger he is putting himself in, and he even does the unthinkable: bowing down and begging at the knees of the man that killed his son. Much like real life, it is never easy knowing who plays what role until the final moments of their life. But is it fair to just take the bad moments and use them against a person? Does not the means justify the end? Achilles had a struggle within himself as well as externally with Agamemnon. Achilles had to decide whether he should be taken advantage of to help his city or go against his principles to save his pride. • 45. Achilles : An Invulnerable Achilles "It's all Greek to me." An invulnerable mortal? Keep reading to get more information on the famous Greek hero Achilles. Achilles' Greek name is Achilles, but unfortunately has no Roman name as they all called him upon his one name. He was a strong, young, and open–minded Greek leader during the Trojan War (1194– 1184 BC) and in fact was one of the most important heroes during the war slaying the Trojan hero Hector outside of the gates of Troy. Achilles did not have any "powers" per se, as he was a mortal and not a god. However, his mother Thetis was very concerned with her son's mortality and had a plan to make him invulnerable. So one night, she secretly grabbed Achilles and brought him to the River Styx. She then dipped him into the magical waters, making him invulnerable. Without regard to his heel that she was holding, his heel had never touched the water, making it the only part of his body with a human–like quality. This is how we got the name "Achilles heel" as we still use to this day. Then, as he was just a young child at the age of nine, a seer told Thetis that Achilles would heroically die in battle. After hearing this, Thetis disguised Achilles in feminine attire and sent him off to live on the Aegean island of Skyros where Achilles spent most of his life. Encompassed by his many great outward qualities, the actions of a man from his inside shows what his true character is. Among his true inner characteristics, the main ones that show in the play are his pride, his unpredictability, and his rage. Achilles demonstrates his pride in many different situations throughout the Illiad. The first example can be seen in the beginning of the story when Achilles' war prize, Briseis, is taken away from him. His pride is hurt not only because of the taking away of a woman he is fond of, but his pride takes a hit because of Agamemnon embarrassing him in front of the other warriors which leads to Achilles withdrawing himself from the Greek army. As it is portrayed throughout the lliad, when it came down between the embassies of Priam and Agamemnon's, it would be a decision which Achilles makes ultimately for his own reasoning and benefit. It would be Priam, who would be able to sway the great Achilles in the return of his son's body, while Agamemnon's would ultimate fail. It would be for the reason which Priam and Achilles shared in a moment of loss for individuals they cared for deeply. That it is with the aid of Priam's embassy, that Achilles is able to further reach in achieving his goal of honor and undying fame. The relationship or lack thereof between Achilles and Agamemnon would put them at odds constantly, both having different agendas and views in regards to the war. Early in the beginning, we saw that honor was an important factor for Achilles, which was a part of his ultimate end goal. In the scene between Achilles and his mother, he says, "Mother, since you bore me for a short life only, Olympian Zeus was supposed to grant me honor. Well, he hasn't given me any at all. Agamemnon has taken away my prize and dishonored me.," (lliad Bk 1 pg. 17) which in one of the instances that shows a divide between them. That it's not about having a "prize", but the ... • 59. Achilles And Achilles : The Hero Of The Iliad In the Iliad there are many characters that could be considered heroic. But the two main characters that stand out as heroes to me are swift–footed Achilles and flashing–helmet Hector. Numerous times throughout the epic they display qualities and traits that are unsurpassed by anyone on their side. Many times throughout the epic Achilles and Hector are tested for their strength, and will to win in battle, which for both warriors always ends up positive because they always win their battles. Although both fighters are among the elite status in the armies, they each show human and god–like qualities that help them be as a fierce and feared as possible. As soon as we are exposed to Achilles in battle, it is obvious why he is the hero of the Achaeans. He is very devoted, and even the heat of battle does not faze him, as he mows down rows and rows of his opponents. His devotion in battle is suitably shown when he is talking of battle: "I have no taste for food– what I really crave is slaughter and blood and the choking groans of men" (Homer Book 19 line 255) Although this quote is very gory, it shows his taste for fighting and how badly he wants to be great. When Achilles was young he was given the choice from his Mother, Thetis Goddess of the Sea, he could either be a great warrior, have a ton of glory, be remembered for ever but would have to die young, or Achilles could live a normal life, not be a great warrior, or be remembered, but he would live to a ripe old age. • 61. Essay on Achilles From the very beginning of the poem, the character Achilles is one of the major foci of the story. His actions of lack of actions have enormous effects upon how the plot unfolds. Starting with the fight with Agamemnon and his withdrawal from the battle, to the death of Patroklos, and finally to the slaying of Hektor, Achilles and his emotions decide the fate of many Greek and Trojan warriors. It is his struggle against his anger, pride, loyalty, and love that make this poem one of a tragic nature, rather than just a gruesome account of a war. Although the reputation of Achilles claims him to be the perfect warrior, strongest of the Greeks, the poem spends more time on the man than on his reputation. I think the most obvious presentation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus I feel his behaviour throughout these books where he is moved to battle is a function of his personality acting under tremendous pain and grief. A better place to view Achilles is in the first book. The argument that Achilles presents at the beginning of the poem is very rational and heartfelt and surprises me that it took ten years for it finally to get mentioned. Achilles sheds light on the fact that all the Greeks are at Troy to fight over the pride and honour of Agamemnon's brother and is brave enough to stand up to the king and call him greedy and selfish. His lack of hatred towards the Trojans as a people is easily seen in his statements about how the people of Troy had never wronged him prior to the conflict. This sympathy for the Trojans comes back in the final book where Achilles promises Priam twelve days of cease–fire to mourn and bury Hektor. This action, as I have said earlier, seems strange when set so close to the death of Hektor, but in context with Achilles earlier, it is not hard to believe that he would do this. Achilles is a very passionate man, not just in warfare but in his feelings for his close friends and family and for people in general. Of all enemies, the Trojans are very hard not to like or at least be pitied. All the Trojans, except for Paris, are good–hearted family men who are defending their homes, wives, and ... • 63. Differences Between Achilles And Achilles In his book, The Encyclopedia of Greek and Roman Mythology, Roman states that, The Greek concept of the hero was not based on a calculation of the warrior's social utility and helpfulness in straightforward terms; rather a hero's greatness is defined by how extraordinary he is, how far he transcends the lives of ordinary mortals (2010:8). This essay will compare the greatest hero of the Trojan War, Achilles with the strongest hero of Ancient Greece, Herakles. It will also discuss how they compare to their modern day representations in cartoons, movies and pop culture. These two very well–known heroes of Ancient Greek mythology were both born from one mortal and one immortal parent. While their bravery, battle skills and strength have earned them a place in the history books there are also some differences between these heroes. Achilles, the protagonist of Homer's epic, the Iliad, was the son of Peleus, a mortal king and Thetis, a sea nymph and daughter of Neseus (Roman 2010:7). One version of the story describes Achilles as the only surviving child of this marriage, after Thetis had murder six of her children by burning them (Pinsent 1983:114). A later version states that his mother tried to protect him when he was born by dipping him in the river Styx (Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His impulsiveness and emotional instability often got him in trouble. Hera used this to her advantage yet again after the birth of his children from his first wife, Megara. She drove him mad, which caused him to kill his sons and abandon Megara (Roman 2010:209). For the crime of murdering his sons he was ordered to perform the famous Twelve Labours in order to purify himself (Roman 2010:210). This would also later ensure his immortality however. These would not be the last tasks he would have to complete in penance for his anger and impulsive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. The Iliad and Achilles Achilles was fundamentally passionate in nature which is the foundation of the heroic characteristics and qualities described by Homer in The Iliad. The character exhibited emotions which were responsible for heroic forcefulness that was provoked by and reacted to the actions of others, and interpreted as reactions to provocations; however, at the center of the emotions is anger. In the Iliad, Homer portrays Achilles as a character with multiple temperaments ranging from superhuman strength and courage, vengeful and quick to anger and could be petulant when conditions were not favorable, to deeply loyal and would sacrifice anything for friends and family. The character of Achilles reflected attributes of a lover of war, vengeful and intense anger, love, suffering, pain, and heroic duty. Homer's story focuses on a battle that took place before Book 11 of The Iliad when Agamemnon ad taken as a concubine a young Trojan woman named Chryseis. Chryseis' father, a priest of Apollo, tried to buy the freedom of Chryseis, but Agamemnon mocked the request and refused to release the girl. Angered by the decision, Apollo punished the Greek armies by sending a plague to kill the soldiers one by one. As the ranks thinned Agamemnon finally agreed to allow Chryseis to return home, however, a replacement was demanded in exchange: Achilles' wife, the Trojan princess Breseis. Achilles obediently relinquished his bride, and then angrily announced there would no longer be ties of loyalty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Achilles Themes The saying "nothing can beat the classics" is really tested when it comes to the book The Song of Achilles, written cleverly by Madeline Miller since this book is based on The Iliad, written approximately 3000 years ago by none other than the great Homer. Like many other great books reimagined, the story has a couple of changes here and there but Miller focuses rather on a character that does not get as recognition, is not the strongest fighter in all of Greece, does not have the brightest mind, but is the "Philatos [...] Best of men" (Miller 349). In brief, what Patroclus realizes throughout the story is that love requires the willingness to make sacrifices for their beloved ones and the power to overcome anything which the characters, conflicts, ... Even though, Achilles ends up admitting Patroclus did the right thing and that he is a better man than him, Patroclus sacrifices his relationship for Briseis to overcome Agamemnon's decision to keep Briseis as a war slave. • 72. Achilles Rage In book one of the Iliad, Homer debunks Achilles rage as both dishonorable and duplicitous. Achilles may demonstrate great courage and strength, but he is severely deficient in the other qualities of an epic hero: temperance, magnanimity, and a sense of loyalty. His rage masked all these essential attributes. Though he is known as the most skilled and strong warrior, that doesn't make up for the fact that Achilles acts upon his emotions, not his mind. Think of Achilles as a pot of water on a stove; calm and still until interrupted. Agamemnon is the heater and what causes Achilles to boil. In attempt to restore his honor, Achilles "raged on... day after day he ground his heart out, waiting there, yearning..." (1.581, 585–586). Agamemnon refuses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Achilles : Achilles And Duryodhana Essay John Nguyen Dr. Chance World Literature 26 October 2016 Achilles and Duryodhana Analysis A quick comparison between the characters Achilles in the Iliad and Duryodhana in the Mahabharata suggests that they are extremely similar. Both characters are hard–headed, full of pride, and their eventual demises both occur because of a certain weakness in their invulnerability related to their mothers' oversight. At closer glance, one notices that while they share many traits, the role Achilles plays is much different from Duryodhana's. An examination of each character's motives and the context of the story they are placed in reveals that Duryodhana is clearly the antagonist in the Mahabharata while Achilles appears to be the tragically flawed hero of the Iliad. Some of the similarities between the two characters are obvious. Both come from nobility. Achilles is a Myrmidon prince while Duryodhana is a Kauravan prince. Both princes are also considered to be exceptional warriors, and they are frequently complimented on their amazing fighting abilities. Achilles is described as a "frenzied god of battle" while Duryodhana is also frequently praised in his great skill with weapons such as his mace (Homer 519). While they may be great warriors, the two men often let their stubbornness and pride take rein of their emotions. When King Agamemnon snatches Briseis, a woman Achilles had captured from the town of Lyrnessus, Achilles swears that he will never again fight under Agamemnon nor "do ... Achilles In The Odyssey "Sing, goddess, of Achilles ruinous anger Which brought ten thousand pains to the Achaeans, And cast the souls of many stalwart heroes To Hades, and their bodies to the dogs And birds of prey" (Homer). Containing a war that echoes through the ages, the Iliad was an epic writing of conflict and struggle between two kingdoms. The poem is one of the most insightful, eventful, and influential writings of Greek mythology. Homer, whether or not if he was real, wrote these poems based on oral stories passed down by bards that traveled across the lands.
