Name: Jessica Chilvers
Skills acquired
Digital technology
- What
equipment/software
packages did you use to
produce your
production?
Post production
- What software did you
use to create your
production?
- Discuss specific features
of the software.
-
Photoshop
Garageband
Final cut express
Sony Cameras
LiveType
I used Final cut express to
create my horror opening
sequence. The software
allowed me to edit the footage,
change the
contrast/brightness/speed of
the clips and also add effects
like blur to enhance some
shots.
How did these skills
contribute to the creation of
your product?
The skills I learnt by using
these software’s allowed me to
create a number of soundtracks
for the opening titles to the
running chase scene, by editing
the tracks adding effects and
slowing/speeding them up.
LiveType was used for the
creation of the titles at the
beginning and photoshop was
used to create our logo.
The skills I learnt on Final cut
express allowed me to be able
to try and make our footage as
horror like as possible through
editing the clips, cutting them
smaller to create a faster more
rapid pace and making clips
darker using brightness and
more darker and enhanced
using the contrast.
How will you develop these
skills during the A2 project?
I can experiment more with
Final cut express by maybe
adding effects to the green
screen for my music video if I
use it.
Since this year it is a music
video I can experiment more
with effects as I am considering
doing a pop video to make It
more varied and interesting and
keep the audience involved.
2. Research and Planning
- What tasks did you
complete when
preparing to film your
sequence?
- How did your planning
help the smooth
progression of your film?
Using conventions of real
media texts
- Which texts did you
analyse?
- Did you take any
inspiration from the
conventions found from
your research?
Skills that were learnt in the
research and planning section
including being able to plan
what we were going to film
beforehand which made the
filming a lot more easier and
productive as we knew exactly
what scenes we wanted to be
filmed and had a structure of a
beginning middle and end we
wanted.
Skills that were learnt in this
section was being able to
successfully analyze visual
pieces of texts which were
trailers and scores in these
trailers which then aloud me to
create a successful soundtrack
for the opening sequence which
had all the horror conventions
creating a creepy, eerie feel for
the audience.
Creativity
Skills that I learnt in this section
- were our ideas for your
was to plan numerous ideas
portfolio imaginative and unique and outcomes of that idea as
We researched the history of
horror, institution work of
successful horrors by different
studios, the conventions of a
horror film, audience research
into a horror.
To plan we had made up a list
of initial ideas, whilst creating a
prop list and call sheets.
I watched a number of trailers
from different horror films and
from different sub-genres in
horror to look at conventions,
they all shared and which they
differed in and what made them
suitable for that sub-genre. As
we were doing a more haunted
possessed dead stalker type
horror opening sequence we
took conventions from
trailers/movies like ‘The
Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’ were
the girl is the possessed which
was similar to ours.
We did go with obvious horror
universal conventions so our
audience would be clear what
I will further develop and
maintain these skills by making
sure that I keep with planning
beforehand and creating a
structure to follow with a clear
beginning, middle and end to
follow. Also making sure things
like costumes/props are done
so that I don’t forget to bring
anything on the filming day,
which would halt filming.
I will develop this still further by
making sure I analyze many
texts in A2, getting enough
information about the music
genre I am doing so that
everything else I create
(digipak, advert, music video)
fits with this genre and
compliments its features and
conventions to make a
successful project from our
brief.
Going into the A2 project I will
make sure that I am more
creative with making the music
3. or did you adhere to
conventions?
we changed our idea to another
one we had later on in the
project, without detailed
planning this wouldn’t of been
possible.
genre they were watching; as
there was no real gore in our
opening sequence it was more
the suspense and the creepy
unknown of what was going to
happen. Creating scenes from
our own imagination and adding
ideas like having Savannahs
singing voice over the titles at
the beginning to make it more
creepy, creating a ‘asylum’
environment and having a
piano solo to increase tension
at the end which was done by
my friend.
video etc and explore more
effects/transitions to enhance
the visuals making them better
and engage ‘wowing’ the
audience more. Being more
creative in challenging
conventions in my chosen
music genre rather than in my
last project I stuck very much to
the horror conventions and
features so that it was obvious
what genre the sequence was
from.
