strong women
Compared to Southeast Asia, the women of
the Philippines share greater legal equality
Pre-colonial women were entitled to
property, trade, and the right to divorce
their husband
5. The Spanish colonization lasted from 1565 to
1898
There was a preference for male children
rather than females
Isabella II of Spain introduced the Education
Decree of 1863, which required the building
of at least 2 free primary schools in each
town, one for boys and one for girls
6. Women are allowed to arrange the marriage
of their sons or daughters
They act as religious mentors
They also handle the money
In the Urban setting, Filipino women get the
same opportunities as males in the business
world
In the rural & tribal setting, women take
care of the home
7. Courtship and relationships are considered
extremely conservative
The man courts the woman in a process that
can take up to 4 years
One woman is usually courted my multiple
men, choosing the “best” from among them
Divorce is viewed as negative
8. The Philippines have three major problems in
the area of women:
1. Mail order brides
2. Marital Rape
3. Prostitution
