Bobby Bowden began his lifelong love for football at an early age. As a young child he would often
climb onto the roof of his house and sit for hours watching the local high school team run practice
drills. Bobby played football while a student at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama
and again in college, first at the University of Alabama and then at Howard College (now Samford
University).
Bobby's coaching career began in 1954 as an assistant coach at Howard College. After working as

Florida State only won four games in a three year stretch before Bowden came along in '76. After
taking the reins at Florida State, Bobby immediately got to work transforming the Seminoles into
the team that it is today. Over the years he has recruited many star athletes to come play football for
Florida State including dozens of All–Americans, two Heisman Trophy winners and many star
athletes that would also become stars in the NFL.
The 1977 season brought Bobby his best season record to date finishing the season at 10–2 and
finally beating in state rival Florida after losing to them the previous nine seasons. The Seminole
squad was gaining much needed national exposure as the media started praising Bobby and his team
on their achievements. Bobby Bowden was named the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year in
1980 and in 1983 and was inducted in the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

season except 1981. The loss to Oklahoma in the 1981 Orange Bowl would be Bowden's last loss in

"The greatest pass rusher in college football today" said Coach Tom Osborne of the Nebraska,
Cornhuskers. Have you ever heard of "the biggest ovation you never heard." 73,650 fans all for a
single deaf person named Kenny Walker. It was his last game for university and he was going on to
the Denver Broncos.
Kenny Walker was born in april 6th, 1967, in Crane, TX. He became deaf at the age of 2, from
spinal meningitis. He was offered a football scholarship from the University of Nebraska
Rare is it that warmth crowds wrath for the spotlight when the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the
Colorado Buffaloes crack helmets in their annual Big Eight showdown. Yet that was the mood this
season at chilly Memorial Stadium in Lincoln as fans applauded loudly every senior playing his

compensation – a bit like free labor or dare to say slavery don't you think?
On the other side of this heated exchange are the pundits who say that college athletes are amateurs
and are already being paid in terms of their scholarship. Mind you that a vast majority of the
opposition have never played college athletics themselves so they wouldn't know what it is like to
be in the shoes of an athlete who has a full scholarship, and even though that scholarship covers
tuition, books, meals, housing, and other related costs, it does not cover the extra costs that make up

home who would otherwise be fed if the athlete was working instead of playing sports, and money

As I'm sitting at my desk trying to think of an interesting aspect in my life that could fill more than
three sentences, I hear my father scream. "THEY TOOK MY SANDWICH, MY PEANUT
BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH!" At this point it 's not as much of a yell but more of a
disappointed plead like he was devastated by the loss of his dinner. Then it went back to yelling.

Husker has an interesting personality to say the least. He is a troublemaker who does not listen, he 's
unintelligent, and very stubborn. But he also is super sweet, extremely friendly, and impossibly cute.
He has done very many stupid things like this weekend we were driving home from Cape Cod and
he somehow fell dead asleep standing up. I was petting him and when his head was leaning against
my hand, he fell asleep. Gently placing his head on the armrest, I expected him to wake up but nope
he was sound asleep, standing! I wondered how that was even possible when he had his dog bed
about a foot away from him. Another time, he was in the backyard and saw the huge german shepard
in his backyard behind ours. Husker wanted to play so he decided to run over into this huge,
intimidating animals territory. The dog attacked him, leaving a scar on his stomach. Finally we got
Husker back into our yard but he ran over again. You would think by the time you got scarred, you
would learn your lesson but no, he was so excited to have someone to play with he ran over a
second time. Luckily, he didn't get mauled to death, which could've easily happened. I could go on

It was just a normal gameday Saturday for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Me and my charismatic dad
woke up at six in the morning, just like usual. The opening season game always cheered me up. All
week we had been setting up the tailgate in my dad's truck. There was nothing better than a day like
that day, at least, for the first part. We went to the Caseys for breakfast, which is a tradition. Well, at

Should college athletes get paid more money?
There has been a constant debate the past few years on whether college athletes, particularly football
players, should get paid. In 1988, the Nebraska legislature passed a bill that would allow the
University of Nebraska football players to receive better cash incentives. The bill was later vetoed
by Governor Kay Orr, who was governor of Nebraska at the time (O'Toole etal. 2). . The dispute

But the bill is getting exploited by NCAA rules and by the official in the Big 12.
According to Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg, the bill, if passed in Nebraska, has a slim
chance of passing in other states that has schools in the Big 12. He states, "At this point, I know of
no other state legislative activity that relates to a bill like this" (cite). Weiberg expands on how he is
not alone in this decision by saying, "Our presidents and chancellors have been uniformly opposed
to any plan that would give the appearance of play–for–pay"(O'Toole etal. 2). With these statements
it seems like Chambers doesn't have good position in getting the bill passed, but the bill can initiate
an argument saying that if college athletes do not get paid, the temptation of illegal consumption of
money by athletes could rise.
In agreeing with Weiberg, Wally Renfro, who is an assistant to NCAA president Myles Brand,
states, "It (the bill) shouldn't happen for two reasons. One is philosophical. It's not the model of
intercollegiate athletics. Second, it's impractical. They're basically talking, I think, about paying
football players. I don't think that's going to stand the test of a court challenge from students who
play basketball or students who play baseball or students in the tennis

Nutrition In College Athletes
Nutrition is not a topic many people College athletes have shown a lack of knowledge about
nutrition, which can cause adverse effects in college and later in life, it is athletic departments' job to
educate athletes by hiring registered dietitians (RD) and implementing a nutrition curriculum for
athletes. College athletes rely heavily on what their bodies look like as a way to gauge their
performance and often times nutrition and the quality of their diets is neglected. Athletes have ideas
about what their body composition should be for their sport, whether they need to be lean, muscular,
or bulky. However, those preconceived ideas about body composition can cause athletes to

Athletes may see results faster, feel better, and have more energy; something that can improve their
performance in both athletics and academics. Providing athletes with a RD can change the way
athletes think about food. Junior running back Rux Burkhead, "under the supervision of the
Cornhuskers' RD, can account for every calorie and carb that goes into his body... he has never felt
or played better" (Olson). The RD at the UNL had a huge impact on Burkhead's diet and
understanding of nutrition. Educating athletes can be a long process and it does take effort, but
athletes are disciplined, want to compete to the best of their abilities. Registered dietitians can show
them how to achieve those goals starting with a proper diet to support their training levels. Given a
resource like a RD, athletes would understand what their bodies' need, when, and why so that they
could make healthy decisions even when a dietitian is not
