Conga Drum In American Culture
Drums have always had a significant role in culture. The drum serves as the pulse of many nations and peoples and has historically had a dominant role
in many of the rituals and ceremonies of the African, Latin American, and American Indian cultures. InAfrica the drum is considered a sacred tool in
ceremonies and rituals that are a part of the culture. Africa is a large continent, and drums and their use is different from country to country as the
continent is large. In West Africa, the drum can be used for communicative purposes to call meetings or to announce the death of someone important.
This communication is made with a talking drum. The talking drum is hourglass–shaped and its pitch can mimic the tone of human speech by
squeezing the cords of the two drumheads between the arms and body. It can also be used to send signals. Traditional African religious activities such
as communal prayers, rain making, healing ceremonies, and rituals associated with purging evil in society are made complete by drumming. (Kiarie 2)
The Conga drum, is used in traditional religious ceremonies in the Conga region. The Conga drum is a single head–drum made from stretching a goat
skin over a hollow log. Drums can be found at most African family events including weddings, funerals, marriages, and birth celebrations.

Patliness And Death In Funeral Blues, By WH Auden
Funeral Blues, by WH Auden, is a poem in which the poet gives an account of his loved one who has died. He expresses feelings of sadness,
loneliness, and blankness, we get to know that because of the techniques used by him. One of his phrases that show these feelings is "Let aeroplanes
circle moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead." Here he wants to show that the terrible loss of his loved one meant a lot to
him. He wants everyone to feel the way he does, that is sad. That is the reason he wants the aeroplanes to scribble the message "He is Dead" in the sky.
He wants that everyone in this world should grieve because his loved one is dead. He says "He" a word mostly used for God, for his loved one
because the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And to indicate that he uses a mass of figurative language. He uses metaphors such as "My working week and my Sunday rest" here the poet is
comparing his lover with his working week, that is all the seven days in a week. In short he wants to illustrate that the person who has died was
everything for him. A second effective metaphor is "dismantle the sun" where he uses the word dismantle, which is mainly used for machines or a
structure. The poet here compares the sun to a machine that is to be dismantled. The poet sees the sun as a light giving machine. Infact he doesn't
want any brightness and therefore he wants to dismantle the sun. He also uses hyperbole when he say "Pour away the ocean". It is a hyperbole
because pouring away the vast ocean cannot be done by anyone, it is impossible to do so. It is obvious that the poet is exaggerating. He mentions this
so as to express that as the fishes can't live without water even he cannot live without his lover. In short he wants the nature to express the blankness in

Miss Fozzard in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads Essay
Miss Fozzard in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads
The video, "Talking Heads Two" was made in 1998. It is a collection of six dramatic monologues by various different actors, each one telling their
own story. Bennett wrote a series of monologues in 1988 for BBC 2 at a time when they were having financial difficulties. Monologues were
chosen as they only required a few actors and cameramen. They were successful and Bennett decided to write a second series of monologues, the one
which I am going to study is called "Miss Fozzard finds her feet" and I will be discussing how Alan Bennett creates her character and how her story is
told.
The monologues were written for, and shown on television. The use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title "Miss Fozzard finds her feet" lets the audience guess at what might happen in the monologue. The use of the pun "finds her feet" tells us two
things about the story she is going to tell. Firstly, that Miss Fozzard has to "find" a new chiropodist to look after her feet when her old chiropodist
Mr Suddaby moves away. Secondly, before this monologue was written, Miss Fozzard seems to have a fairly uneventful life, now however, she
seems to have plenty of stories to tell the audience. By the end of the monologue she seems to have an eventful and fulfilling life. So in other words
she has "Found her feet" in life and chiropody.
Also in the title there is humour. The name "Miss Fozzard" suggests humour and a character whose traits suggest they are rather ditzy and slow to
catch on which is true in Miss Fozzard's case. For example when Bernard calls Miss Fozzard a "cow" she doesn't realise he is insulting her. This
type of humour is very tongue in cheek as it is used in her name. Her name is a source of humour and she judges people by their names. She repeats
her name a lot in the monologue especially when someone she respects says it in conversation.
In the opening section, Miss Fozzard's character is built up immediately with the use of the phrase "Bit of a bombshell today" which introduces the
war imagery which I will later explain. Miss

Drums History
Drums have existed for a very long time. Some say they even date back to 6000 BC. It is no wonder then, that they have been used for a variety of
situations and have evolved to create a wide range of different types. This being said, all drums, or 'membranophones' (the technical classification),
consist of at least one drum–head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by hand or instrument to produce its sound. Most
commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part of the percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day's rock bands.
Throughout the world, drums have been created from many materials, including wood, metal, plastic and even clay.
The material of the drum skin can also vary from place to place, culture to culture. The skins of assorted animals such as goats, sheep and ... Show more

A drum can have two heads on either side of the body, or alternatively, one drum–head on the top of the body. There are drums which have been
designed to be easy to carry around, such as those used in street parades, and drums which are immobile.
When we listen to music such as rock, the drums we are hearing are inevitably part of the aforementioned drum kit – a selection of drums that are
non–pitched and can be used together in harmony. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of music
genres can use them to create their preferred sound.
The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick'
drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick–drum is the
largest drum in a drum–kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. The last one mentioned, the pitched bass drum, is a popular choice for marching parades
and the drums

Creative Writing: The Musical
He had heard of people who play from the heart. Who can pick up an instrument and let all their emotions free with no sheet music or chords to
follow, and still make it sound crafted by the gods. He'd heard of people sitting down with a cello in front of an audience and making the audience feel.
Levi had heard of people who play from the heart, but frankly, he didn't believe any of it. That was all romanticized bullshit fit to play to the hearts of
teens who believed music was some form of magic that brought two lost souls together. It was limited to movies and romance novels found in any YA
section.
Levi believed in order, structure. He believed in the crisp sheet of music that sat in front of him on a spotless black stand (the only ... Show more content

Levi doubted that statement had much truth behind it, there was a tuba player who was actually high at the moment.

Eren set his drum sticks down on the edge of his drum, put his hands in his pockets, and walked off. In front of the stage was a few rows a chairs that
usually held an audience of about 20 during concerts, mostly made up of parents and the occasional grandparent cheering on their darling child during
a concert they were required to attend unless they wanted an F. Eren took the seat furthest away from the stage and pulled his phone out of his pocket.
Behind him the conductor let out a sigh and held up her hand again.
"Take the pick up at measure 34." She seemed calmer this time, more collected. Normally after an Eren incident she would be ruthless to the rest of the
concert band until the bell rang.
"And Levi." He raised an eyebrow in return.

Use Of Drums In African Culture
Drums in African Culture This paper will examine how drums are used in three African cultures. Africans value music deeply, it is a part of their
everyday existence. Music plays a part in their spiritual, emotional and physical lives. The people of Africa compare the beat of a drum to that of
the beat of a heart. Music is a part of young children's lives from the beginning, as music is used in to celebrate births and used in games children
play. Drums are used to at rites of life such as marriage or and the time of death to mourn. Drummers were highly regarded by the community and if a
young person mastered drumming by the age of 10, he would be considered royalty. The animal skin drum was a common type of drum (Smith 22).
Evidence of African music and dance can be found as far back as 6000 to 4000 Before the Common Era on Algerian rock paintings (Dean 27).
Drums were thought of as spiritual and often were a part of religious or royal ceremonies and to heal people. The beating of the drum was loud
enough to be used to communicate across long distances, and once Christianity appeared the sound of the drum was commonly used called people
to worship. Generally drums were handmade from wood or metal. They varied in size and shape. Some drums were shaped as cylinders, others
conical and others were shaped hourglass or challis. All drums require a frame to help keep its shape. Drums can be played by solo musicians or by
groups. Ensembles were most common in African cultures.

Why Is It Said To Be So Alive?
Rapid clacking noises of the rim of the taiko drums began the opening ceremony. All I saw were bamboo sticks and mechanisms connecting my eyes
and ears while my hands held the mouth. I jumped up and got in my crouching position. The bass of the taiko drums vibrated in my heels and chest; I
felt alive. Adults and children, watching my partner and me, were amazed and a little scared. As I shook and swung the 20–pound lion head around, I
realized my effect as a leader on the crowd. As I feasted on the cabbages, Chinese red envelopes, and oranges, I realized I was much more than just
some bamboo sticks and mechanisms. On the outside, I was a lion. A golden fur bearded, red and green–eyed, rainbow–colored pom–pom covered,
various art patterned lion!
Boom, bang, cling. The beat of taiko drums, gongs, and cymbals rang in coordination as I ran downstairs with my friends. As we rushed, our teacher
shouted at us to slow down because we can barely reach the huge steps that go downstairs, but I was excited, so I ran anyways. As I burst through the
doors, I saw a colorful lion going crazy, parading around the auditorium! I stood there as my heart raced and stared at it just wondering how they were
making the lion look so alive. Right then, I was instantly hooked.
Two years later, when I finally graduated kindergarten, I went to first grade. I became the butt of the lion, the follower, the bottom. There was a strap
that connected to my waist that allowed my movements to wag the springy

Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay
1. Introduction
This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument – namely the drums – has on one's intelligence and academic ability. A
search of the literature reveals that studies of this kind have been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the
conclusion that music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in.
A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than
those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012) reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school performance.
Gaser and Schlaug (2003) showed that musicians learn advanced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The aim of this study is to ascertain whether learning to play the drums increases one's IQ score or not. Will learners who take daily drum lessons for
two weeks improve their intelligence by improving their memories and having their brains stimulated?
2.Review of Literature
A number of studies showing the relationship between the playing of musical instruments and IQ development are discussed below. A few studies on
the effect of drum lessons on brain development are also considered.
2.1 Correlation between Music and IQ in children
In Canada, Schellenberg conducted a study on school children and college students and concluded that those who took voice or piano lessons had
higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Schellenberg also studied whether the effect of an increase in IQ would
continue to improve with more than a year's lessons and his most recent work has proven that this is in fact the case. The study found that young
adults who had taken music lessons in childhood did have higher IQ's and better high school grades than people who didn't. He concluded that college
students who had played a musical instrument regularly as children were two points ahead in IQ compared to their

Jk Simmons And Character Clash
Tyler Christiansen/ Section A/ Whiplash/ Peter Stone
A young actor can learn a lot from the performances of JK Simmons and Miles Teller in Whiplash. Throughout the film each actor clearly had an
understanding of not only who their character was, but what their character's overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great
performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and
Andrew were. These actors are a great example of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character.
The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge portion of that was due to their comprehension of their
characters. A factor that played a great part between these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the high status
character, holding the power to make or break Andrew's life–long dream. Simmons plays this part of Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and
vocal choices. His movement is very meticulous, almost as if he's constantly thinking about every move he makes. His posture is tall and overbearing,

As an actor I tend to do really well in low status roles. It's difficult for me to play someone who's intimidating, due to my smaller stature, and my
hesitance when it comes to emotionally connecting to my anger and letting myself let go and be big and bold. However I do excel at connecting
emotionally to anxiety or nervousness and I believe because my usual soft spoken voice it's much easier for me to truthfully play a character like
Andrew. Ideally I would like to be able to play both of them and I think in the future I would be able to approach both roles with such honesty as

"The use of drums has been recognized as being able to put people into spiritual trances throughout history. The drum is a musical instrument with
great power and presence that gives the "pulse" or backbone to the music it is incorporated with." 1 This quote from the article The History of the Drum
– Early History, describes how much impact the musical instrument has on human beings, as well as the influence it has on the music it is performed

As culture and society has grown, changed, so have percussion and the instruments used. When looking back, the impact drums and percussion
had on these peoples is unprecedented. As said by many artists and musicians alike, drums are the backbone of any piece of music or band. What
started as a simple object played with your hands has turned into a diverse, complex range of diversified snares, toms, bass drums, etc. Many
current percussion and set players today trace the roots of their art and style back to the time periods mentioned. African percussion items like the
djembe are still used in bands today, and are being produced and sold by the biggest brands in the drum industry. The instruments discovered in the
past have encouraged many of us, including myself, to take a look at what we used to play as a community, and how it brought us together or even
gave us hope, as witnessed during the Middle Ages. Percussion was a vital part of many cultures and now we hear it in everything: in the background
of a commercial, in the beat of a song, or even in something as simple as a song you're stuck listening to in an

frequently associated with a woman of her age. In telling us of her visit to the crematorium no unusual deductions would be made as a lady of this
age would undoubtedly encounter a few deaths of friends of a similar age. It also seems justified that she should be annoyed at these irreverent

as well as someone who leads a rather uneventful life. "I thought I'd get out my little maroon coat and put in an appearance. At least its an outing" In

attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans. Devo was created by Bob and
Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob and Jerry Casale, and Allan Alan Meyers, in 1972, according to All Music Guide. The group first gained national attention in
1975 when they made a short film entitled The Truth About De–Evolution. The band got their name from the idea that "instead of evolving mankind
has actually regressed." The group impacted new wave by the use of surreal humor mixed with commentary on the current human condition and
dehumanized electric music. *According to the band's official website, Rolling Stone Magazine initially called the group fascist. Their most popular
hit in the United States was "Whip It", which at its high of popularity reached number fourteen on Billboard's Hot One Hundred. The Talking Heads

Succeeding to composers Brian May and Maurice Jarre to score George Miller's fourth 'Mad Max' film 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. Tom Holkenborg
(aka Junkie XL) delivered a score that mix new technologies and techniques with vintage scores cliches. Tom Holkenborg is a composer from the
Netherland who has had a number of hits as a solo artist in the music electronic scene back in the late 90s and more this last decade for his work on
film scores with his mentor Hans Zimmer. The pair have provided the scores for some of Hollywood's biggest recent blockbusters counting '300:
Rise of an Empire', 'Man of Steel' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' among others. Certainly in Holkenborg's score for 'Mad Max: Fury Road' we can
hear an emulation of Zimmer "sound". Zimmer create simple thematic sequence that he would repeat and make evolve all along the movie. He's also
especially famous for blending electronic music sounds using computers and/or combination of synthesizers with traditional orchestral arrangements.
He is particularly adept at blending diverse styles into a musical fusion of classical, pop and world music. His style is very much to create simple
thematic material, and then give them the Zimmer treatment to craft them into highly effective pieces of film music embodying the mood of a film,
such that music and movie complement perfectly. (Paterson, 2016) Holkenborg had a clear major vision for the score. He wanted to create an insane

Over a period of ten days, Alan Merriam takes his readers on a journey through the Basongye Bala tribe on their quest to create the perfect drum. Drum
creation and music in general is an important element to the Basongye culture, this can be "witnessed" through this study by how detailed and
extensive the process for drum making actually is, the Basongye people ensure every groove and nook is in its correct place. Additionally, the author
reminds his readers that even though the purpose of this article is to show how the Basongye Bala folks create drums, that it is not the only investigation
that will occur. Any ethnographic investigation can lead to almost anything else; one study can inevitably build upon itself (Merriam 74). This
ethnographic study was done through observations of the Bala people. As mentioned previously, the purpose of this study is to illustrate drum creation
within the Basongye Bala tribe of Lupupa Ngye; it is an ethnographic, as well as, an ethnomusical study. The author clarifies the disparity between
Basongye people, how there are actually three groups of the same people. This happened because the original Basongye people of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo were temporarily dispersed by the Arabian Slave Wars then they regrouped into three divisions: the Basongye of the East, the
Bekalebwe of the South, and lastly, the Bala of the Northeast (Merriam 75). The author continues to tell the readers that his study focuses mainly on the

Buddy Rich, born Bernard Rich on September 30, 1917, was one of, if not the greatest, the best jazz drummers in the history of music. Rich began
playing drums at a very early age once his father realized in restaurants, Buddy Rich would tap knives and forks on the plates (http://www.nytimes.com
/1987/04/03/obituaries/buddy–rich–jazz–drummer–with–distinctive–sound–dies.html?pagewanted=1). He began performing at the age of 18 months.
At the peak of Rich's childhood career, Rich was reportedly the second–highest paid child entertainer in the world (http://www.nytimes.com/1987/04

Rich was known to jump around between bands within short periods of time. Soon after Rich joined Marsala, he joined Artie Shaw, and then
Tommy Dorsey. While Rich was with Dorsey, he was roommates with jazz legend Frank Sinatra for two years. Rich took a break during World War
II for military duty, but quickly got back to drumming after the war was over. He formed and led his own band in 1946 and disbanded in 1951.Frank
Sinatra helped fund Rich's band. In 2951, Rich married Marie Allison. Rich was earning $1,500 a week with the Harry James Orchestra by 1954. Rich
formed another band in 1966 and had greater success than his band back in 1946. The group stayed together until 1974. Although they weren't together
after that, they reunited for tours on and off until Rich died in 1987 (http://www.biography.com/people/buddy–rich–9457049#musical–success). He had
a heart attack in 1959, which slowed down his drumming but started back up as soon as he was well enough to do so. His passion for drumming
showed when he filed for bankruptcy in 1968, but kept on drumming even though he had no money and was most likely in debt. "Personal
considerations usually took second place to Rich's music." (http://www.biography.com/people/buddy–rich–9457049#personal–life) Rich had yet
another heart attack in 1983, which required surgery. Lo and behold, he kept on drumming as soon as he was well. A tumor was discovered in his
brain in 1987 and was removed in March. While he was in the midst of receiving chemotherapy, he died on April 2nd in California due to heart failure

Alan Bennett's A Cream Cracker Under the Settee Essay
Alan Bennett's A Cream Cracker Under the Settee
How does Alan Bennett reveal Doris' character, life and attitude in the dramatic monologue "a cream cracker under the settee"?
Many of Bennett's characters are unfortunate and downtrodden, as in the Talking Heads series of monologues that was first performed at the Comedy
Theatre in London in 1992, and then transferred to television. This was a sextet of poignantly comic pieces, each of which portrayed several stages in
the character's decline from their initial state of denial or ignorance of their predicament, through their slow realization of the hopelessness of their
situation, to a typically bleak Bennett conclusion.
The dramatic monologue, "a cream cracker under the settee" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She has an obsession with cleanliness and hygiene and does not believe that Zulema does a good enough job. Because of this she stereotypes all
younger people and believes them all to be rude and not up to her high standards.
Doris does not approve of Zulema coming, because admitting she needs Zulema would mean forfeiting her independence. Because of the fact Doris
cant dust Zulema holds the threat of "Stafford house" over her, which is the local old peoples home " you'd be better in Stafford house" , this shows
that Zulema wants Doris to be under someone else's control.
Throughout the monologue Doris shows that she is obsessive about cleaning, she does not believe that Zulema cleans to her standard, ("she doesn't
dust, she half dusts") therefore she takes it upon herself to do it, even though it has been "forbidden" be Zulema. Most probably in Doris' case, even if
Zulema had cleaned thoroughly, it would not be good enough for Doris because accepting that Zulema can do it would mean that she would not have
to do it, Therefore taking away her independence.
When Doris and Wilfred were younger they were said to of had a baby which had died at birth, when the baby had died the nurse had raped it up in
newspaper, and in Doris' eyes she associated this with being "dirty". This reveals how Doris does not want her child to have anything to do with
anything dirty, even though it is dead, showing her

Additionally, there are even more types of Pukulan found in various forms of dance music (Abdullah, 2005). A summary of the different Pukulan
specific to the Kompang Ezhar community is shown in Figure 1 below:
Figure 1: A summary of the various types of Pukulan found in the Kompang Ezhar (Abdullah, 2005)
In Kompang, rhythm is mainly characterized by the interlocking of different parts divided within the Kompang ensemble. Interlocking is basically
done with two or more Kompangs playing simultaneously, with one part playing the Basic beat which is usually the downbeats; another part playing
the Rhythm beat which is usually the off beats; and an additional part(s) playing the Leading beat which is usually characterized by triplets or a
syncopated rhythm that creates a unique interlocking texture specific to the Malay Kompang musical genre (Hahril, 2010). In addition, instrumentation
is a musical element that is relatively fixed in Kompang; there is usually a group of Kompangs playing together, and occasionally, accompanying voice.
1.3 Performance Context
In the Singaporean context, the Malay Kompang is usually seen performed at weddings and celebratory ceremonies, or at traditional showcases. As the
Kompang is usually performed in large, open spaces, it

Analysis Of Darius Milhaud, A French Composer
When Africans were sold as slaves to Central and South America in the 16th and 17th centuries, they continued to make marimbas there. The
instruments underwent further development on the American continent, especially in Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil ("Marimbaphone", 2003). In
these countries the calabashes were replaced by precisely tuned wood resonator chambers.
In Latin America, the name "marimba" refers to every kind of large xylophone with calabashes as resonators of the type that originated from Africa.
The name "marimba" was eventually applied to the concert and orchestra instrument that had been inspired by the Latin American model
("Marimbaphone", 2003). Darius Milhaud, a French composer, made the marimba popular and gave it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Steel Drum. The steel drum is a skillfully hammered 55–gallon oil barrel which has been carefully tuned by hand to produce perfect musical tones
("Steel Pan History", 2017). It was developed on the Caribbean island of Trinidad during the early years of the 20th century. Old rubbish tins, care
parts, and garbage can lids formed the first "Iron Bands", which led to the realization that a dented section of a barrel head could produce a musical
note. Careful refinement of this discovery produced the modern steel drum that is now often seen being played by street musicians.
Conclusion
Percussion has evolved throughout its history into what it is today. Melodic instruments have several origins, the two main origins being Eastern Asia
and Africa. In each culture their first intended use was for religion and war. Melodic percussion instruments, like most instruments, are now used for
less serious events than their original uses. Rather than being linked to war and religion, a majority of melodic percussion is used for entertainment.
Along with the change of melodic percussion's contributions in war and religion, comes the advancement melodic percussion has made for
entertainment. Today they are played in most places around the world in ensembles or even on streets during street performances. Although the
instruments belonging to melodic percussion can be played and enjoyed on their own, the main purpose of a melodic percussion instrument now usually
lies

Caribbean Music History
The history of Caribbean music is directly correlated to the history of the Caribbean itself. That islands were invaded by outsiders whom inflicted
violence, slavery, and genocide. It comes as a surprise that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative background. Blame it on Christopher
Columbus, the first European to land in this region in 1492. Based on Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own. This displeased
natives or Spain's European neighbors; within a few years, bloody battles raged across the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England,
Denmark, and the Netherlands. All these battles, and diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking out entire cultures. Thus the
Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. the native culture was further eroded when the Europeans imported African slaves to
work the sugar and coffee plantations on their island colonies. In multiple cases, the native cultures, and the native musics, were replaced with those
brought over from Africa.
The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. Besides being the foundation of African music, which slaves brought with them to the
area, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade. Nearly all Caribbean music possesses a strong beat created by drums. Most drums are
some version of the bongo or the larger congo, which is a smooth wooden drum that is played with the hands. Tassa drums are conical hand

Dealing With Dragon Quotes
Dealing with Dragons In the novel Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede, the main character Cimorene is a princess that doesn't pursue the
quintessential princess role in the kingdom. Cimorene's parents did not even respect or value her. Additionally she want to learn new things, but her
society does not allow females to pursue them. Finally, she is being forced to marry a prince whom she does not respect. For these reasons
Cimorene is justified in ignoring the expected social norms of her day. On the other hand, others feel that Cimorene should put her kingdom first and
the welfare of her people above her own pleasures. However, Cimorene is not allowed to pursue things that could help her kingdom such as being the
excellent ambassador she became in the Mountains of Morning. First, Cimorene should not be forced to be like her sisters when her parents constantly

not a normal princess judging by her actions. Also this shows that she was justified for leaving Linderwall since that was her only option in getting
out of the marriage..She expressed her feelings to her parents, but princesses then in that era didn't have a say. Later, she was very frustrated about
the forced marriage. On page 9 she exclaimed, "I'd rather be eaten by a dragon!" This shows her desperation to leave the kingdom. This also shows
that she preferred death over a life not worth living. The frog gave her a way to get out of the marriage and still be happy. This is when Cimorene left

On the first of November I visited the Performance Art Center, on Texas State University's campus. There I saw the Texas State Jazz Ensemble
perform with guest, Steve Houghton. The performance began at 7:30pm and lasted for an approximate hour and a half. As I observed the stage I
noticed that there were a variety of instruments played in the jazz ensemble. The instruments that were played included string (grand piano, electric
guitar, electric bass, bass), brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn), woodwind (tenor sax, alto sax, baritone sax) and percussion instruments (six piece
drum set, bongos). On the drum set was, special guest, Steve Houghton from the music school of Iowa. Overall, there were several different pieces of
different sub–genres of jazz music. The pieces that were played in the ensemble included the following: Slide's Derangement by Slide Hampton,
BBC by Bob Florence, Dangerous Curves by Matt Harris, Blues for 70 by John Clayton, Jazz Crimes by Joshua Reden, Isotope by Joe Henderson,
Basie's Back in Town by Ernie Wilkins. Each piece named above had its own uniqueness. The characteristics of each musical piece will be described
below: Slide's Derangement started off with a solo performed by an alto sax. There were also solos performed by a trumpet and the drums. Each solo
was accompanied by a melodic repetition of numerous crescendos performed by brass and woodwind instruments. The drums and the rhythm kept the
upbeat tempo by the string instruments. The

African Music: Uses in Rituals, Celebrations, and Healing
African Music: Uses in Rituals, Celebrations, and Healing Africa is a vast and complex content that is home to over 200 different languages being
spoken. Just as the people of Africa are diverse, so is their music, but they are still used for the same reasons. The music they perform is tediously
learned and artfully performed. They have songs specifically for one person, like "Magonde" which is a song for the chief played and sung in the
Zimbabwe culture (Sinyoro, n.d.). It is an old, traditional song that is played on an mbira–type instrument (also known as "thumb piano") called a Njari
dza MaNjanja (Willoughby, 2010). Much of the music performed is for spiritual rituals, various celebrations, whether joyful or sorrowful, and even
occasionally for healing.
African Rituals Yaya Diallo writes in his book "The Healing Drum" several different rituals performed that everyone in his village, Fienso, in the
Republic of Mali, would watch and/or perform. He addresses a few different types of rituals and how they are performed, the first being the Maniah
festival in Zangasso, Mali.
Maniah Festival The Maniah festival is a spiritual ritual. It begins on a Thursday and lasts until Saturday night. It would start with the Maniah fetish
being brought out of its hut. Then it would be placed on someone's head, usually a conquered warrior, and the fetish would carry the fetish around the
village three times and if it was dropped, the carrier would be condemned to death. For

Essay on Alan Bennett Talking Heads
Alan Bennett Talking Heads
In Bennett's monologues the main character faces an important decision which will affect the course of their lives. I will go on and explain in this
essay, the play writer's use of literary techniques – including setting, theme and characterisation– which may make the decision seem correct or not.
Talking Heads was originally produced for BBC television but has recently been used as a collection of short stories. Each of the characters portrayed,
is played by an actress that has been previously associated with Alan Bennett e.g.:Thora Hird who plays Doris worked on a BBC Radio 4 programme –

Bennett reflects this very well by transferring this British habit to his characters. All of them are dead against a change in their lifestyle.
This is excellently demonstrated in 'A Cream Cracker'– Doris wants to stay in her house, but the council recommends she moves to a nursing home ,
but she refuses on the grounds of hygiene–clearly this shows that she is against a change of setting and a change of life and this is cleverly portrayed
throughout the plays.
Is their setting a safe haven or a prison? Looked at from different angles, we all would have different views. With Graham, his home and mainly his
bedroom is a sanctuary for him, some where he can escape prejudice and critics, but on reflection what they really are – is a hiding place , a place for
Graham to hide away and wallow in self pity. But for Irene she feels her home is a prison. She has no freedom or liberty, no way to express herself.
The only way she achieves this is by writing letters which may anger or offend other members in the community. But as she enters an actual prison
she feels more freedom than when she was actually a free woman, that may seem strange to you and I, but for some people, this can be reality and a
break from a life they do not enjoy. When dealing with Doris, it is or can be a confusing situation, from different viewpoints it

Rhetorical Analysis of The Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime"
Kenneth Burke's Five Master Terms exist to bring to light the motivation behind, theoretically, any bit of text to which we care to apply them. The
beauty of this Pentad is its fundamentality in regards to the motivations humans have in creating words and meaning using the tools of language
available. This doesn't just apply to long–winded theses regarding the nature of dramatistic meaning, though perhaps something like that would be
more up Burke's alley. No, in this case I plan to utilize his methods for a more seemingly mundane example, the motivations behind something as
simple as song lyrics.
I say song lyrics are simple, but in this case I am going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Burke says that one of his five terms will often rise to the surface and become a dominant force over the others in any interpretation of a text. While
this could be true with "Once in a Lifetime," I want to begin by addressing a term that is conspicuous in its apparent absence. Of all the terms, Act has
the most ambiguous role in this composition, and I believe because of this that it is the most important. The song describes a theoretical situation in
which a person, only ever described as the second–person "You," is suddenly and inexplicably found in a completely ordinary situation that is
nonetheless alien to him (or her). The "You" in question– quite arguably the Agent, but more on this later – is always "finding" himself in a situation,
"asking" himself what is happening, and eventually "telling" himself that the situation is somehow wrong. Each verse expands upon this theme of
finding, asking, and telling to determine a situation, but these are the only Acts committed by the Agent. "And you may ask yourself/How do I work
this?" Byrne sings, but his fictional persona never finds out how to work it. "Where does that highway go to?" he asks, yet he never travels down the
highway to find out. The identity in question can be seen as constantly standing in questioning thought before the situation without ever aggressively
Acting. Burke discusses the scholastic view of Act, which is a ratio he expresses as thus: "essence is to existence

Music During The Civil War
Through out the years, music has developed and many genres have been created and have been evolved. During the 1960s, music started to become
louder. Drummers were required to hit their drums and cymbals harder to fit the style of music (6). While jazz styles were still widely popular, music
was being created in a straight and loud feel, and it has remained that way to this very day (7). Many modern drummers have taken the influences of
drummers from the early 20th century and they are using it in music today. With all this development in styles of music, thedrum kit evolved along with
them.

The Talking Drum
As we have seen in class, primary documents extend far beyond diaries and records of battles that fill dusty tomes, and everyday objects often
provide a window through which historians can glimpse at life in the past and draw relevant conclusions. Whether it be a piece of eight that ties
together social, political, and economic forces, or an astrolabe that unifies cultural and religious systems that are often pitted against each other,
common objects often tell a story of their own. Rather than using a similar item, I chose to go through slave databases in an effort to find an object
used by slaves, allowing me to get a sense of life through the eyes of those who often lacked the opportunity to record their experiences. The primary
document I settled on was the "Talking Drum" from the "Asante of Ghana" ('Talking Drum', UnderstandingSlavery), since it was a cultural item from
the African mainland, but served a variety of purposes on European plantations. The drum had several roles, as the webpage details. The author
describes the obvious purposes for the drum, including its obvious use as a "musical instrument", its role in "rituals, important ceremonies... and
storytelling". They then briefly discuss how such a tool could be used to "send messages" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pinocchio, A Classic Film Directed By Norman Ferguson
Human Nature, a state of dangerous and unpredictable practicality that intertwines within difficulties of our lives. Humans make mistakes not because
we are programmed to do so, but because we have an analytical mindset to choose what best suits our self–interest . If you would ask me, Human
nature is probably one of the most terrifying things of this Earth. Nevertheless, you can't stand but to love humanism and the persona of one 's being.
Pinocchio, a classic film directed by Norman Ferguson, reminds us how it is to be vulnerable, fragile, and human. Through the linear progression of
choice and opposition, Pinocchio's wooden heart has to learn the acrimonious trial of human temptation and deviance in order to become a real boy.
Thus creating the theme, "you must go through trial, turbulation and experiences in order to truly appreciate humanity and others."
In the beginning, just as many films begin, we open the story. This simple action helps the audience literally envision the beginning, the opening, the
first page of a story. This makes the film more personable, as if we were reading the book with a family member before going to bed. In the timeline,
we would call this the exposition in which happiness and no opposing forces have occurred yet. Pinocchio is still a wooden puppet and we are
introduced to the characters of the film. What I find is interesting is that Even from the beginning, Pinocchio was the closest to human out of all the
toys and wooden clocks in the

During the cool fall Saturday mornings, my dad would wake me up early to leave for rocket football games. We drove in a grey dodge truck that
would jam out to music like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and Pink Floyd. My dad when he was younger used to play the drums, so while we were
driving he would tap the steering wheel and the fold up seat in between us with the beat of the song. Those were the first moments that my passion for
drumming was fueled. By late elementary school, my parents gave me some electric drum sticks that would connected to my mp3 player and would
make noise with every tap. I played those for years until I reached middle school where I adapted and found another way to show my passion. My

The Potlatches of Northwestern Tribes
In the Metropolitan Museum of art there is a wide verity of objects for the Northwest tribes. In the Northwest coast music is highly associated with
ceremonies and feasts known as the potlatches. Potlatches were held by a host to establish or uphold his status position in society. Other times they
were to signify a significant event in his family like the birth of a child, a daughter's first menses, or a son's marriage. Potlatches are to be successful
and guests are invited to a potlatch to share food and receive gifts or payment. The host provides everything from food, drink, entertainment and, also
his gifts to each of his guests. The value of the gift depends on the social status of the recipient, the higher the respect for him the more valuable the
gift is. If his gift in not that valuable or wanted it would look bad for the provider. If this happens the host must add another gift to satisfy his guest. A
potlatch can last for several days when celebrating a passing spirit that contains feasting, singing, performing ritual dances, competitions and other
events.
During these potlatches the events is traditionally marked by ceremonial dances and also by songs. The songs get an extra effect by providing

of college at Berklee College of Music. However, as great as these experiences and opportunities were, they did not keep me nearly busy as I am
today with music. Actually, they really didn't keep me busy at all. Well, Berklee was an all music college, but its not like I was playing gigs all the
time. It was not until recently, within the past year, that my adventures with drumming began to pick up. Arguably, to the point of where I'm doing

Conga Drum In American Culture

  • 1. Conga Drum In American Culture Drums have always had a significant role in culture. The drum serves as the pulse of many nations and peoples and has historically had a dominant role in many of the rituals and ceremonies of the African, Latin American, and American Indian cultures. InAfrica the drum is considered a sacred tool in ceremonies and rituals that are a part of the culture. Africa is a large continent, and drums and their use is different from country to country as the continent is large. In West Africa, the drum can be used for communicative purposes to call meetings or to announce the death of someone important. This communication is made with a talking drum. The talking drum is hourglass–shaped and its pitch can mimic the tone of human speech by squeezing the cords of the two drumheads between the arms and body. It can also be used to send signals. Traditional African religious activities such as communal prayers, rain making, healing ceremonies, and rituals associated with purging evil in society are made complete by drumming. (Kiarie 2) The Conga drum, is used in traditional religious ceremonies in the Conga region. The Conga drum is a single head–drum made from stretching a goat skin over a hollow log. Drums can be found at most African family events including weddings, funerals, marriages, and birth celebrations. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Patliness And Death In Funeral Blues, By WH Auden Funeral Blues, by WH Auden, is a poem in which the poet gives an account of his loved one who has died. He expresses feelings of sadness, loneliness, and blankness, we get to know that because of the techniques used by him. One of his phrases that show these feelings is "Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead." Here he wants to show that the terrible loss of his loved one meant a lot to him. He wants everyone to feel the way he does, that is sad. That is the reason he wants the aeroplanes to scribble the message "He is Dead" in the sky. He wants that everyone in this world should grieve because his loved one is dead. He says "He" a word mostly used for God, for his loved one because the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And to indicate that he uses a mass of figurative language. He uses metaphors such as "My working week and my Sunday rest" here the poet is comparing his lover with his working week, that is all the seven days in a week. In short he wants to illustrate that the person who has died was everything for him. A second effective metaphor is "dismantle the sun" where he uses the word dismantle, which is mainly used for machines or a structure. The poet here compares the sun to a machine that is to be dismantled. The poet sees the sun as a light giving machine. Infact he doesn't want any brightness and therefore he wants to dismantle the sun. He also uses hyperbole when he say "Pour away the ocean". It is a hyperbole because pouring away the vast ocean cannot be done by anyone, it is impossible to do so. It is obvious that the poet is exaggerating. He mentions this so as to express that as the fishes can't live without water even he cannot live without his lover. In short he wants the nature to express the blankness in ... • 4. Miss Fozzard in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads Essay Miss Fozzard in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads The video, "Talking Heads Two" was made in 1998. It is a collection of six dramatic monologues by various different actors, each one telling their own story. Bennett wrote a series of monologues in 1988 for BBC 2 at a time when they were having financial difficulties. Monologues were chosen as they only required a few actors and cameramen. They were successful and Bennett decided to write a second series of monologues, the one which I am going to study is called "Miss Fozzard finds her feet" and I will be discussing how Alan Bennett creates her character and how her story is told. The monologues were written for, and shown on television. The use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title "Miss Fozzard finds her feet" lets the audience guess at what might happen in the monologue. The use of the pun "finds her feet" tells us two things about the story she is going to tell. Firstly, that Miss Fozzard has to "find" a new chiropodist to look after her feet when her old chiropodist Mr Suddaby moves away. Secondly, before this monologue was written, Miss Fozzard seems to have a fairly uneventful life, now however, she seems to have plenty of stories to tell the audience. By the end of the monologue she seems to have an eventful and fulfilling life. So in other words she has "Found her feet" in life and chiropody. Also in the title there is humour. The name "Miss Fozzard" suggests humour and a character whose traits suggest they are rather ditzy and slow to catch on which is true in Miss Fozzard's case. For example when Bernard calls Miss Fozzard a "cow" she doesn't realise he is insulting her. This type of humour is very tongue in cheek as it is used in her name. Her name is a source of humour and she judges people by their names. She repeats her name a lot in the monologue especially when someone she respects says it in conversation. In the opening section, Miss Fozzard's character is built up immediately with the use of the phrase "Bit of a bombshell today" which introduces the war imagery which I will later explain. Miss ... • 5. Drums History Drums have existed for a very long time. Some say they even date back to 6000 BC. It is no wonder then, that they have been used for a variety of situations and have evolved to create a wide range of different types. This being said, all drums, or 'membranophones' (the technical classification), consist of at least one drum–head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by hand or instrument to produce its sound. Most commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part of the percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day's rock bands. Throughout the world, drums have been created from many materials, including wood, metal, plastic and even clay. The material of the drum skin can also vary from place to place, culture to culture. The skins of assorted animals such as goats, sheep and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A drum can have two heads on either side of the body, or alternatively, one drum–head on the top of the body. There are drums which have been designed to be easy to carry around, such as those used in street parades, and drums which are immobile. When we listen to music such as rock, the drums we are hearing are inevitably part of the aforementioned drum kit – a selection of drums that are non–pitched and can be used together in harmony. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of music genres can use them to create their preferred sound. The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick' drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick–drum is the largest drum in a drum–kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. The last one mentioned, the pitched bass drum, is a popular choice for marching parades and the drums ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Creative Writing: The Musical He had heard of people who play from the heart. Who can pick up an instrument and let all their emotions free with no sheet music or chords to follow, and still make it sound crafted by the gods. He'd heard of people sitting down with a cello in front of an audience and making the audience feel. Levi had heard of people who play from the heart, but frankly, he didn't believe any of it. That was all romanticized bullshit fit to play to the hearts of teens who believed music was some form of magic that brought two lost souls together. It was limited to movies and romance novels found in any YA section. Levi believed in order, structure. Levi doubted that statement had much truth behind it, there was a tuba player who was actually high at the moment. "And then you come in here, you disrespect me, you disrespect your peers. Get off my stage. Now." Eren set his drum sticks down on the edge of his drum, put his hands in his pockets, and walked off. In front of the stage was a few rows a chairs that usually held an audience of about 20 during concerts, mostly made up of parents and the occasional grandparent cheering on their darling child during a concert they were required to attend unless they wanted an F. Eren took the seat furthest away from the stage and pulled his phone out of his pocket. Behind him the conductor let out a sigh and held up her hand again. "Take the pick up at measure 34." She seemed calmer this time, more collected. Normally after an Eren incident she would be ruthless to the rest of the concert band until the bell rang. "And Levi." He raised an eyebrow in return. • 8. Use Of Drums In African Culture Drums in African Culture This paper will examine how drums are used in three African cultures. Africans value music deeply, it is a part of their everyday existence. Music plays a part in their spiritual, emotional and physical lives. The people of Africa compare the beat of a drum to that of the beat of a heart. Music is a part of young children's lives from the beginning, as music is used in to celebrate births and used in games children play. Drums are used to at rites of life such as marriage or and the time of death to mourn. Drummers were highly regarded by the community and if a young person mastered drumming by the age of 10, he would be considered royalty. The beating of the drum was loud enough to be used to communicate across long distances, and once Christianity appeared the sound of the drum was commonly used called people to worship. Generally drums were handmade from wood or metal. They varied in size and shape. Some drums were shaped as cylinders, others conical and others were shaped hourglass or challis. All drums require a frame to help keep its shape. Drums can be played by solo musicians or by groups. Ensembles were most common in African cultures. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Why Is It Said To Be So Alive? Rapid clacking noises of the rim of the taiko drums began the opening ceremony. All I saw were bamboo sticks and mechanisms connecting my eyes and ears while my hands held the mouth. I jumped up and got in my crouching position. The bass of the taiko drums vibrated in my heels and chest; I felt alive. Adults and children, watching my partner and me, were amazed and a little scared. As I shook and swung the 20–pound lion head around, I realized my effect as a leader on the crowd. As I feasted on the cabbages, Chinese red envelopes, and oranges, I realized I was much more than just some bamboo sticks and mechanisms. On the outside, I was a lion. A golden fur bearded, red and green–eyed, rainbow–colored pom–pom covered, various art patterned lion! Boom, bang, cling. The beat of taiko drums, gongs, and cymbals rang in coordination as I ran downstairs with my friends. As we rushed, our teacher shouted at us to slow down because we can barely reach the huge steps that go downstairs, but I was excited, so I ran anyways. As I burst through the doors, I saw a colorful lion going crazy, parading around the auditorium! I stood there as my heart raced and stared at it just wondering how they were making the lion look so alive. Right then, I was instantly hooked. Two years later, when I finally graduated kindergarten, I went to first grade. I became the butt of the lion, the follower, the bottom. • 10. Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay 1. Introduction This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument – namely the drums – has on one's intelligence and academic ability. A search of the literature reveals that studies of this kind have been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the conclusion that music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in. A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012) reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school performance. Gaser and Schlaug (2003) showed that musicians learn advanced ... A few studies on the effect of drum lessons on brain development are also considered. 2.1 Correlation between Music and IQ in children In Canada, Schellenberg conducted a study on school children and college students and concluded that those who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Schellenberg also studied whether the effect of an increase in IQ would continue to improve with more than a year's lessons and his most recent work has proven that this is in fact the case. The study found that young adults who had taken music lessons in childhood did have higher IQ's and better high school grades than people who didn't. He concluded that college students who had played a musical instrument regularly as children were two points ahead in IQ compared to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Jk Simmons And Character Clash Tyler Christiansen/ Section A/ Whiplash/ Peter Stone A young actor can learn a lot from the performances of JK Simmons and Miles Teller in Whiplash. Throughout the film each actor clearly had an understanding of not only who their character was, but what their character's overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and Andrew were. These actors are a great example of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character. The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge portion of that was due to their comprehension of their characters. A factor that played a great part between these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the high status character, holding the power to make or break Andrew's life–long dream. Simmons plays this part of Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and vocal choices. His movement is very meticulous, almost as if he's constantly thinking about every move he makes. His posture is tall and overbearing, often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the monologue 'Lady Of Letters' Irene is portrayed as a character that is a rather concerned, law–abiding and sensitive middle aged citizen, qualities which are frequently associated with a woman of her age. In telling us of her visit to the crematorium no unusual deductions would be made as a lady of this age would undoubtedly encounter a few deaths of friends of a similar age. There are many new way groups in the world, but Charlton only selected some of the most notable groups. Charlton divided these notable groups by American and British nationalities. In order to give equal attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans. Devo was created by Bob and Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob and Jerry Casale, and Allan Alan Meyers, in 1972, according to All Music Guide. The group first gained national attention in 1975 when they made a short film entitled The Truth About De–Evolution. The band got their name from the idea that "instead of evolving mankind has actually regressed." The group impacted new wave by the use of surreal humor mixed with commentary on the current human condition and dehumanized electric music. *According to the band's official website, Rolling Stone Magazine initially called the group fascist. Their most popular hit in the United States was "Whip It", which at its high of popularity reached number fourteen on Billboard's Hot One Hundred. Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) delivered a score that mix new technologies and techniques with vintage scores cliches. Tom Holkenborg is a composer from the Netherland who has had a number of hits as a solo artist in the music electronic scene back in the late 90s and more this last decade for his work on film scores with his mentor Hans Zimmer. The pair have provided the scores for some of Hollywood's biggest recent blockbusters counting '300: Rise of an Empire', 'Man of Steel' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' among others. Certainly in Holkenborg's score for 'Mad Max: Fury Road' we can hear an emulation of Zimmer "sound". Zimmer create simple thematic sequence that he would repeat and make evolve all along the movie. He's also especially famous for blending electronic music sounds using computers and/or combination of synthesizers with traditional orchestral arrangements. He is particularly adept at blending diverse styles into a musical fusion of classical, pop and world music. His style is very much to create simple thematic material, and then give them the Zimmer treatment to craft them into highly effective pieces of film music embodying the mood of a film, such that music and movie complement perfectly. Over a period of ten days, Alan Merriam takes his readers on a journey through the Basongye Bala tribe on their quest to create the perfect drum. Drum creation and music in general is an important element to the Basongye culture, this can be "witnessed" through this study by how detailed and extensive the process for drum making actually is, the Basongye people ensure every groove and nook is in its correct place. Additionally, the author reminds his readers that even though the purpose of this article is to show how the Basongye Bala folks create drums, that it is not the only investigation that will occur. Any ethnographic investigation can lead to almost anything else; one study can inevitably build upon itself (Merriam 74). This ethnographic study was done through observations of the Bala people. The author clarifies the disparity between Basongye people, how there are actually three groups of the same people. This happened because the original Basongye people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were temporarily dispersed by the Arabian Slave Wars then they regrouped into three divisions: the Basongye of the East, the Bekalebwe of the South, and lastly, the Bala of the Northeast (Merriam 75). • 27. Caribbean Music History The history of Caribbean music is directly correlated to the history of the Caribbean itself. That islands were invaded by outsiders whom inflicted violence, slavery, and genocide. It comes as a surprise that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative background. Blame it on Christopher Columbus, the first European to land in this region in 1492. Based on Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own. This displeased natives or Spain's European neighbors; within a few years, bloody battles raged across the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England, Denmark, and the Netherlands. All these battles, and diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking out entire cultures. Thus the Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. the native culture was further eroded when the Europeans imported African slaves to work the sugar and coffee plantations on their island colonies. In multiple cases, the native cultures, and the native musics, were replaced with those brought over from Africa. The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. Besides being the foundation of African music, which slaves brought with them to the area, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade. Nearly all Caribbean music possesses a strong beat created by drums. Most drums are some version of the bongo or the larger congo, which is a smooth wooden drum that is played with the hands. Much of the music performed is for spiritual rituals, various celebrations, whether joyful or sorrowful, and even occasionally for healing. African Rituals Yaya Diallo writes in his book "The Healing Drum" several different rituals performed that everyone in his village, Fienso, in the Republic of Mali, would watch and/or perform. He addresses a few different types of rituals and how they are performed, the first being the Maniah festival in Zangasso, Mali. Maniah Festival The Maniah festival is a spiritual ritual. It begins on a Thursday and lasts until Saturday night. It would start with the Maniah fetish being brought out of its hut. Then it would be placed on someone's head, usually a conquered warrior, and the fetish would carry the fetish around the village three times and if it was dropped, the carrier would be condemned to death. • 31. Essay on Alan Bennett Talking Heads Alan Bennett Talking Heads In Bennett's monologues the main character faces an important decision which will affect the course of their lives. I will go on and explain in this essay, the play writer's use of literary techniques – including setting, theme and characterisation– which may make the decision seem correct or not. Talking Heads was originally produced for BBC television but has recently been used as a collection of short stories. Each of the characters portrayed, is played by an actress that has been previously associated with Alan Bennett e.g.:Thora Hird who plays Doris worked on a BBC Radio 4 programme – Deadringers .It is safe to say that Alan Bennett tailored some of the material, to suit the actors, own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bennett reflects this very well by transferring this British habit to his characters. All of them are dead against a change in their lifestyle. This is excellently demonstrated in 'A Cream Cracker'– Doris wants to stay in her house, but the council recommends she moves to a nursing home , but she refuses on the grounds of hygiene–clearly this shows that she is against a change of setting and a change of life and this is cleverly portrayed throughout the plays. Is their setting a safe haven or a prison? Looked at from different angles, we all would have different views. With Graham, his home and mainly his bedroom is a sanctuary for him, some where he can escape prejudice and critics, but on reflection what they really are – is a hiding place , a place for Graham to hide away and wallow in self pity. But for Irene she feels her home is a prison. She has no freedom or liberty, no way to express herself. The only way she achieves this is by writing letters which may anger or offend other members in the community. But as she enters an actual prison she feels more freedom than when she was actually a free woman, that may seem strange to you and I, but for some people, this can be reality and a break from a life they do not enjoy. When dealing with Doris, it is or can be a confusing situation, from different viewpoints it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Rhetorical Analysis of The Talking Heads’ “Once in a... Rhetorical Analysis of The Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" Kenneth Burke's Five Master Terms exist to bring to light the motivation behind, theoretically, any bit of text to which we care to apply them. The beauty of this Pentad is its fundamentality in regards to the motivations humans have in creating words and meaning using the tools of language available. This doesn't just apply to long–winded theses regarding the nature of dramatistic meaning, though perhaps something like that would be more up Burke's alley. No, in this case I plan to utilize his methods for a more seemingly mundane example, the motivations behind something as simple as song lyrics. I say song lyrics are simple, but in this case I am going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burke says that one of his five terms will often rise to the surface and become a dominant force over the others in any interpretation of a text. While this could be true with "Once in a Lifetime," I want to begin by addressing a term that is conspicuous in its apparent absence. Of all the terms, Act has the most ambiguous role in this composition, and I believe because of this that it is the most important. The song describes a theoretical situation in which a person, only ever described as the second–person "You," is suddenly and inexplicably found in a completely ordinary situation that is nonetheless alien to him (or her). The "You" in question– quite arguably the Agent, but more on this later – is always "finding" himself in a situation, "asking" himself what is happening, and eventually "telling" himself that the situation is somehow wrong. Each verse expands upon this theme of finding, asking, and telling to determine a situation, but these are the only Acts committed by the Agent. "And you may ask yourself/How do I work this?" Byrne sings, but his fictional persona never finds out how to work it. "Where does that highway go to?" he asks, yet he never travels down the highway to find out. The identity in question can be seen as constantly standing in questioning thought before the situation without ever aggressively Acting. Burke discusses the scholastic view of Act, which is a ratio he expresses as thus: "essence is to existence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Music During The Civil War Through out the years, music has developed and many genres have been created and have been evolved. During the 1960s, music started to become louder. Drummers were required to hit their drums and cymbals harder to fit the style of music (6). While jazz styles were still widely popular, music was being created in a straight and loud feel, and it has remained that way to this very day (7). Many modern drummers have taken the influences of drummers from the early 20th century and they are using it in music today. With all this development in styles of music, thedrum kit evolved along with them. The Civil war was over. The former slaves were now free to play music and share their influences. • 35. The Talking Drum As we have seen in class, primary documents extend far beyond diaries and records of battles that fill dusty tomes, and everyday objects often provide a window through which historians can glimpse at life in the past and draw relevant conclusions. Whether it be a piece of eight that ties together social, political, and economic forces, or an astrolabe that unifies cultural and religious systems that are often pitted against each other, common objects often tell a story of their own. Rather than using a similar item, I chose to go through slave databases in an effort to find an object used by slaves, allowing me to get a sense of life through the eyes of those who often lacked the opportunity to record their experiences. The primary document I settled on was the "Talking Drum" from the "Asante of Ghana" ('Talking Drum', UnderstandingSlavery), since it was a cultural item from the African mainland, but served a variety of purposes on European plantations. The drum had several roles, as the webpage details. The author describes the obvious purposes for the drum, including its obvious use as a "musical instrument", its role in "rituals, important ceremonies... and storytelling". They then briefly discuss how such a tool could be used to "send messages" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 36. Pinocchio, A Classic Film Directed By Norman Ferguson Human Nature, a state of dangerous and unpredictable practicality that intertwines within difficulties of our lives. Humans make mistakes not because we are programmed to do so, but because we have an analytical mindset to choose what best suits our self–interest . If you would ask me, Human nature is probably one of the most terrifying things of this Earth. Nevertheless, you can't stand but to love humanism and the persona of one 's being. Pinocchio, a classic film directed by Norman Ferguson, reminds us how it is to be vulnerable, fragile, and human. Through the linear progression of choice and opposition, Pinocchio's wooden heart has to learn the acrimonious trial of human temptation and deviance in order to become a real boy. Thus creating the theme, "you must go through trial, turbulation and experiences in order to truly appreciate humanity and others." In the beginning, just as many films begin, we open the story. This simple action helps the audience literally envision the beginning, the opening, the first page of a story. This makes the film more personable, as if we were reading the book with a family member before going to bed. In the timeline, we would call this the exposition in which happiness and no opposing forces have occurred yet. Pinocchio is still a wooden puppet and we are introduced to the characters of the film. What I find is interesting is that Even from the beginning, Pinocchio was the closest to human out of all the toys and wooden clocks in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Cimorene's Justification In The Stor Dealing With Dragons In the stor Dealing with Dragons, an improper princess who hates her life in the kingdom Linderwall. Cimorene is justified in ignoring expected social norms of the day because it did benefit her life, but some people may disagree. First of all, Cimorene is justified in ignoring expected social norms of the day. For example, "All in all, Linderwall was a very prosperous and pleasant place. Cimorene hated it........ Cimorene found it very dull, but she pressed her lips together and learned it anyway." (Wrede 1 and 2.) This shows that Cimorene is being forced into something that she does not like, in which she instead finds very uninteresting. This is important because Cimorene's parents force her into taking certain lessons that she hates, which is not right. This shows that Cimorene gets to do something she enjoys and will not get lectured about it not being proper, and she would not have an engagement with Therandil, the man she hates. This is of great importance since Cimorene has never been able to fully enjoy anything that she has taken an interest to. In addition, she becomes the King of the Dragon's acquaintance, "...There's a smallish cave next to the library that I think will do nicely for you, but I'd like you to take a look at it before we start hauling things around." (Wrede 207.) This proves that Kazul, the King of the Dragons, trust Cimorene because she gives her pretty involving tasks. By having Kazul's trust, Cimorene will be able to get out of tough situations involving dragons with the assistance of Kazul. Cimorene gained many things of great interest to her while she ran ... • 38. My Autobiography Analysis During the cool fall Saturday mornings, my dad would wake me up early to leave for rocket football games. We drove in a grey dodge truck that would jam out to music like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and Pink Floyd. My dad when he was younger used to play the drums, so while we were driving he would tap the steering wheel and the fold up seat in between us with the beat of the song. Those were the first moments that my passion for drumming was fueled. By late elementary school, my parents gave me some electric drum sticks that would connected to my mp3 player and would make noise with every tap. I played those for years until I reached middle school where I adapted and found another way to show my passion. My playing really started to become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Caribbean Music History The history of Caribbean music is correlated to the history of the Caribbean itself. That islands were invaded by outsiders whom inflicted violence, slavery, and genocide upon those that originally inhabited the islands. Its surprising that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative background. Based on Christopher Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own. This displeased natives and Spain's European neighbors which provoked a war that erupted across the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England, Denmark, and the Netherlands. All these battles, in addition to the diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking out entire cultures. Thus the Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. The native culture was eroded further when the Europeans imported African slaves to work the sugar and coffee plantations on the island colonies. In multiple circumstances the native cultures and musics were replaced with those brought over from Africa. The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. As well as being the foundation of African music, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade with easily obtainable materials. Almost all Caribbean music acquires a distinct beat created by the drums. Most drums are some version of the bongo or the larger congo, a smooth wooden drum that is played with the hands. Where I can take naps, eat a half–gallon of ice cream and become addicted to some new television series. As a matter of fact, I lived that lifestyle once. To be honest, I absolutely hated it.
