2. What did I commonly hear?
Most of the bulletins contained negativity because it had a larger appeal and becomes
more interesting. They were all professional and unambiguous so were easy to
understand. This means they followed the rules of radio, using the right amount of lines
for certain stories – copy stories and cue and clips. Repetition was not exclusive and the
sentences were short and simple. They all followed the right structure, with the breaking
news to begin and entertainment news towards the end. They use jingles, some using
the name in it and some not. Often there was use of elite persons/nations because it
makes the news more interesting when the listeners know who the news is about.
Unexpectedness was frequent through the first story, as breaking news is usually most
interesting. The first story also contained ‘threshold’ because the larger impact
something has, the bigger news value it contains.

4. Explanation
With the first story, I decided it was continuity because the story must be developed on the
conclusions on the inquiry and updated with more information. It was elite persons/nations
because it was in relation to famous political powers. It was obviously both negative and
unexpected. I also said it was threshold because the news is extremely devastating and affected a
wide amount of people.
The second story was also threshold because it affects a whole country. The chancellor is an elite
person. It is personalisation because we know who the news is about and the news is specifically
on his decisions. It is frequency because it occurs suddenly and is easy to report on. It is also
obviously negativity.
The third contains proximity, on local news, predictability because they are telling us what is
decided to happen. It is frequent, quick, easy to report.
The fourth is also proximity because the fire fighter is from a local area. It is also personalisation
because the name of the man is directly mentioned.
The fifth and sixth are both in proximity. The fifth contains continuity because perhaps the station
could cover the event of report after it. It is also predictable. The sixth is unexpected and frequent,
quick and easy to report on.

6. Explanation
The first story I noted to be negative because a lot of people do not believe he should be
released. It was unexpected and threshold because a lot of people are involved and opinionated
about the story.
The second story was continuity, to see if plans are followed. It is negative and threshold, it’ll
affect a large amount of people. It was an unexpected death and is in proximity.
The fourth is threshold, affecting a lot of people, unexpected, the storm was sudden. It is negative
and continuity because developments need to be made. It is frequent, easy to report on.
The fifth is personalisation, about a specific place. It is frequency and continuity to see if the plans
are followed.
The sixth is mentioned a surprise, so is unexpectedness. It is proximity and threshold, a lot of
people using the airport. It is frequent, easy to report on.

8. Explanation
The first story is personalisation, talking about specific individuals. It is negative and threshold,
widely affecting a lot of people and is a large impact. It is elite persons, enquiries into individuals
within politics. It is also unexpected.
The second story is personalisation, talking about an individual. It is an elite person, an MP.
Threshold, his decisions affect lots of people.
The third is negative, more interesting. It is elite persons. It is personalisation, talking about
specific people and groups. It is unexpected and threshold – giving negative impact to people all
over the country.
The fourth is threshold because a lot of people may need to divert their route. It is an unexpected
development in the story, easy to report on (frequent) and negative.
