NEWS VALUES
1. Impact:
The facts and events that have the greatest effect on the audience are the most
newsworthy. The number of people whose lives will be influenced in some way by the subject
of the story.
FOR EXAMPLE: A bakery strike may have less impact than a postal strike.
2. Timeliness:
Recent events have higher news value than earlier happenings. Of particular value are stories
brought to the public ahead of the competition.
FOR EXAMPLE: Commentary of match between India and Pakistan.
3. Prominence:
For the same occurrence, people in the public eye have higher news value than obscure
people.
FOR EXAMPLE: We cared that cricketer Imran khan and actor sham Shahid had AIDS, while
an ordinary citizen with AIDS would not have commanded the attention of the national news
media.
4. Proximity:
Concentrate on news that is of local interest; the closer to home the better. Stories about
events and situations in one's home community are more newsworthy than events that take
place far away.
FOR EXAMPLE: Journalists assess the value of a news item reporting tragic deaths by
comparing the number of deaths with the distance from the home community.
5.Oddity Or Novelty:
The weirdness of an event can make it newsworthy.
FOR EXAMPLE: A example of this is dog-bites-man vs. man-bites-dog. Man-bites-dog has
more oddity and novelty. Dog-bites-man usually is not news.
6. Magnitude:
Stories that are perceived as sufficiently significant either in the numbers of people involved
or in potential impact.
FOR EXAMPLE: 2 persons injured in accident. It's not a big news. If 36 person died in bus
accident than it becomes a big news
7. Currency:
Take into account what is on people's minds. More value is attributed to stories pertaining to
issues or topics that are in the spotlight of public concern rather than to issues or topics
about which people care less. Stories come and stories go. People wait for follow up.
FOR EXAMPLE: A News about how many accident have occurred at this intersection in the
last few years.
8.Controversy:
Arguments, debates, charges, countercharges, and fights increase the value of news.
FOR EXAMPLE: India and Pakistan border issue is conflict news.
