Farm Descriptive Essay
The Farm Awakens
The arrival of the six children wearing wrinkled clothes and half shut eyes ironically revived the empty ranch and brought life back into each and
every crevice. The rusty gates creaked as they swung open, revealing the world of tall grass and herds of cattle hidden deep in the hills of Nevada.
Two cars, filled to capacity, rolled up the dusty, dirt road leaving behind all sense of civilization. They arrived at night. Thousands of white lights
illuminated the sky normally blanketed by the bright streets back home. The air smelled and felt fresh. The eerie quiet hid the sleeping animals, but
because of the grinding gravel and anxious screams of joy, the children's noise bounced between the mountain sides and awoke the farm. Both cars
parked in front of the white picket fence lining the house and duffle bags dumped out the back of the SUV's filled with sweaters, toiletries, pants,
blankets and pretty much anything else they could fit. The strong, stocky fathers slung the bags over their shoulders and brought them inside, turned on
the lights, and the outside world was forgotten as they admired the inside of their home for the week.
When the door opened, 5 pairs of boots stomped inside, shuffling their feet along the thick, bristly rug that read "Welcome Home!". As their heads
revolved around the room, Dylan and Grace, the two oldest, led the pack of children naively glancing past the cowhide rugs and rustic furniture the
parents admired. They traveled room to

Oprah Winfrey Celebrity Home
Celebrity homes are always so inspiring because money isn't a factor for them. To buy land and build the house of their dreams is something many
people would love to do. Well, even if you're unable to afford the type of real estate featured, you can still recreate the wow factor on a smaller scale. It
just takes some creativity and a good realtor on your side.
Oprah Winfrey is known for her television prowess and her ability to relate to the average American. As a result, she's been rewarded in many ways
including her finances. With a net worth of $3.1 Billion, Oprah Winfrey can easily purchase the bestreal estate that money can buy. In her vacation
home in Telluride, CO., she has an extensive wine cellar, 8700 square feet and a treetop fire pit. If this sounds like a dream to you, there are ways
to include these elements in your future home. For wine lovers, it might be nice to consider purchasing a home with a finished basement. Turn part
of the basement into your own personal wine cellar. A treetop fire pit may be hard to find, but you can certainly look for a home with a rooftop
terrace. Once that's done, you just need to focus on purchasing a good fire pit. Consider contacting a Colorado realtor to find properties with elements
that are similar to Ms. Winfrey's home.

The backyard of this home has a gigantic pool area, private cabanas, ocean views and a fun water slide. If you come from a family of fish, you
probably would love to have the water elements added to your backyard. In this case, it's wise to look for homes with a backyard pool. A private
cabana isn't difficult to build and install. Unless you're purchasing a home near the ocean, it might be hard to recreate the ocean view element.
However, don't underestimate the power of a really large pool and intricate details for the surrounding furniture and

Clarisse's 'Gone': A Short Story
Clarisse was forgotten, she wasn't remembered. She was gone. Simply gone. Due to the rumor Mildred spread around town, many believed
Clarisse had unfortunately died in a car accident. Others created their own fictional story of Clarisse's mysterious disappearance. Those who
ignored her had no idea that she was gone, or that she even existed in the first place. However, few knew the real story behind Clarisse and what
really happened after her so called "car accident". Despite all the theories, it all began the day when the fire company was called to Clarisse's
home. The abundance of her books were kept safely in her room. Many of these treasures were given to Clarisse by her uncle. She knew that she
wouldn't be able to hide these books forever. The books were securely hidden in the closet closest to the window. She was sure no one would look
in this place, since it would be most obvious. In the closet , there was a small, handcrafted board, behind the freshly ironed and perfectly hung
dresses. The wooden board was covering a hole in the wall. This empty space in the wall was filled with her beloved books, just as they filled her
heart. One evening a firemen stopped by her home asking questions about a book collection. This sudden spark of in... Show more content on

Her feet hurt from the stones, twigs, and hard ground in the woods. All she wanted to do was find The Traveling Library and to be apart of a

importantly, Clarisse wanted to find Montag. Possibly for reasons that were bigger than just flipping a page in a book, or talking about an author.
She kept following the river and began to read some of her books to take her mind off of the pain in her feet. After a few hours, she heard the Hound
and knew that if she followed the Hound, she would find Montag. She followed the Hound for many miles, until it

Fallingwater Vs Kentuck Knob Essay
Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are two beautiful homes built by a man known as an architectural genius, Frank Lloyd Wright. These houses have
gained such notoriety in the architectural world that both were named as National Historic Landmarks. The houses are located very close to each other
resting in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains of Fayette County in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Fallingwater is approximately 43 miles southeast of
Pittsburgh. This home was built partly over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Laurel Highlands. The house was built between 1936 and 1939 for Edgar
and Liliane Kaufmann, the owners of the famous Kaufmann's department store, and was intended to be the Kaufmann's weekend home for family and

Kentuck Knob is located on Chestnut Ridge which is similarly situated in the winding roads of the Allegheny Mountains. Kentuck Knob overlooks the
fantastic view of the Youghiogheny River gorge as well as surrounding hills and farmland.
Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob were intentionally designed alike and have many similarities but some notable differences as well. They were both
built in the Allegheny Mountains of Fayette County. The natural landscape and architectural style was described by Wright as "organic" and have a
natural feel and style to match its' surroundings. Both homes are integrated into the scenic and beautiful landscape of the land. Fallingwater sits low in
the valley of over the stream, but looks dramatic from further downstream. The house has large terraces, and some of them stick straight out and hang
over the waterfall. There are very strong horizontal and vertical lines in the design of the house which resembles the horizontal and vertical lines in the
rock formations and other natural features. Fallingwater used cantilevers to hold certain parts of the house over the stream. Some of the house was
built with the stones found in the area. The waterfall

Clay Street Hill Railroad History
The first successful cable–operated street railway was the Clay Street Hill Railroad, which opened on August 2, 1873. The promoter of the line was
Andrew Smith Hallidie, and the engineer was William Eppelsheimer. The line involved the use of grip cars, which carried the grip that engaged
with the cable, towing trailer cars; the design was the first to use grips. The term "grip" became synonymous with the operator. The line started
regular service on September 1, 1873, and its success led it to become the template for other cable car transit systems. It was a financial success, and
Hallidie's patents were enforced on other cable car promoters, making him wealthy. The next cable car line to open was the Sutter Street Railway,
which converted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This company was controlled by the Southern Pacific Railroad and was to grow to become San Francisco's largest cable car operator. At its peak, it
operated five lines all of which converged into Market Street to a common terminus at the Ferry Building; during rush hours, cars left that terminus
every 15 seconds. Telegraph Hill Railroad in San Francisco 1884–1886 The Telegraph Hill Railroad was a funicular railway that operated using two
cars permanently attached to a cable. The car going downhill helped to counterbalance the car going uphill. The Telegraph Hill Railroad opened in
1884. It was promoted by Frederick O. Layman. The incline ran along Greenwich Street, from Powell Street to Layman's Pioneer Park
Observatory. The observatory was a large resort complex near the present location of Coit Tower. The attraction offered telescopes for the viewing
public from which to observe the wonders of the San Francisco Bay and a restaurant. On the roof was a "time ball," clearly visible to ships in the
Bay. Every day at noon the ball was dropped so that ship's captains could set their chronometers by observing it. The steam engine which drove the
cable was in the basement of the pavilion. The railway used a single track with a passing siding at the

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a horror young adult literature written by Ransom Riggs. It tells Jacob Portman's story who
followed clues that lead him to a house for refugees on the Cairnholm Island off the coast of Wales, where his grandfather used to stay during the
Second World War back in the 1940s. The Cairnholm Island itself only had one phone and was powered with generators that shut off at 10 pm
everyday, foreshadowing the fact that Jacob would go back in time later on. The peculiar children all lived with Miss Peregrine in a 'time loop',
created by Miss Peregrine herself. Because of this, the children didn't age; everyday they repeated September 3rd, 1940 over and over again. For
seventy years they had stayed on that day, although their experience of it is continuous, thus they were able to remember what they did yesterday,
although other things remained the same. Habits may be boring, but it was key for their safety. Monsters, called the hollowgasts, were hunting down
these peculiar children. By being in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel Death of an Englishman, Cipolla told the Marshall that he grew up during the war, similar to the peculiar children. However, even
though time 'stopped' for the children in 1940 and the war really stopped in 1945, either Cipolla or the children were never free. The war affected
more deeply than just the bodies. Because of the war, Cipolla moved away from home and didn't have enough education to work a white–collared job
in the future. He never led a satisfying life because of what happened in his childhood. Meanwhile, most of the children were 'refugees' of their own
parents who thought their children were swapped by the devil; thus they were peculiar. With them coming into Miss Peregrine's house, they were
saving themselves from their parents, the hollowgasts, and also the Nazi. They would not age in the time loop, let alone live a free life; if they wanted

Development Of Modernism After World War II
After the Second World War, attention immediately turned towards reconstructing a better world. Like the earlier world war, it destroyed a previous
social and economic order (Curtis, 1996). Many of tall buildings were built to meet the large number of human requirements. Modernism was rapidly
developed at that time. This essay aims to explore the development of modernism after World War II by compare and contrast the two apartments which
are Hansaviertel Apartment in German and Society Hill Towers in the USA. It first discusses the similarity of the two chosen buildings. Then explains
the difference of design, which includes surroundings, building form and the apartment layout. Furthermore, explore the factors lead to those
difference which are policy, the influence of the other architects and architects' own belief.
As cities were destroyed during the war, there were increasing needs of buildings especially the apartments and houses. These two chosen projects have
the same functions as apartments. They were both high–rise buildings, which were built as a part of the redevelopment of the city after the war. The
Hansaviertel Apartment was built in 1957, Berlin, Germany and designed by Alar Aalto. The other one is named Society Hill Towers in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. I.M Pei is the designer for this apartment. The two apartments were built at the same time but contrast greatly in term of design, which
can represent the several kinds of development of modernism after the

The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty
Picked mostly on a whim, I was kind of excited to watch this to trash talk it as what reviews I had seen weren't very kind. But The Curse of
Sleeping Beauty is actually really watchable. Of course it isn't great, but it's certainly not the train wreck I was led to believe. Parts were actually
scary, with a bit of a silent hill vibe to them and while the ending is more than a little on the predictable side of things. That in no way hampers the
enjoy ability of watching it all play out.
Thomas Kaiser (Ethan Peck) is an artist and a recluse with few friends. Since childhood he has had a reccurring dream with a sleeping woman, Briar
Rose (India Eisley). Though he always awakens before he can kiss and wake her. One day he inherits an old mansion estate from an uncle he never

Though I have a feeling that was kind of the point of the performance, it just doesn't play that well of Natalie Hall and Bruce Davison's more serious
and focus approach. India Eisley is also bland, well right up until twist at the end when she actually does a fair amount of shinning.
My one of my two issue's with The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is that it's a bit to slow to get going. Though once it got going it was great. My other
being the predictability of what's going to happen. Maybe I'm just jaded from seeing to many horror films over the years, but I saw the twist from about
the thirty minute mark.
Final thoughts, overall I really liked it. Was it a masterpiece? No, of course not as few films are. But it was entertaining and I don't consider watching
a complete waste of time. The visuals are nice, the pacing is solid and it has a great dread location that is dripping with atmosphere. Would I
recommend it? Yes, I just recommend going into with an open mind and a six–pack.

Short Hills New Jersey Essay
Short Hills New Jersey real estate is one of the most sought after for many good reasons, one of them is that it is very close to New York City. In
fact, many residents work in Manhattan. It helps a lot that from early on, the village has always had a good connection to the city of New York by
means of transportation.
The founder of Short Hills New Jersey, a millionaire named Stewart Hartshorn had the vision and foresight to transform his rolling 1,552–acre property
into a model village with sophisticated planning. For example, Hartshorn would have a new railroad station built in the Short Hills, in addition to the
railroad connection between Hoboken, New Jersey and New York Cityalready in existence.
Hartshorn's foresight with regards to Short Hills New Jersey real estate is rather like Bugsy Seagel's transformation of a portion of the Nevada desert
into the thriving Las Vegas gambling resort. The only difference is that the former envisioned a peaceful community with plenty of greenery, marked
by the so–called Short Hills Park that continues to uplift the image of the area to this day. The opening of the Kearney Connection would further boost

Descriptive Essay About A House
It was a dark brown house with red shutters. It was placed up on a hill so in the winter it was so difficult to pull the car in the garage. Inside, the
walls were tan and mustard yellow. It was plain in the house but I didn't expect much. It smelt like the over–done scentsy that I put in. It was called
apple–butter and that's exactly what the house smelt of. It was three stories and the basement was half finished. I painted the door a dark red and it
made the whole house stick out. I remember it being so welcoming and now when I think about it, I get a cold shiver down my spine. There were
holes in some of the walls from things being thrown. The front doors lock was splitting apart, the trim on the sides on the door was broken off. If those
walls could talk I would go back in there for a day just to listen. I was 17 years old and moving out on my own. My dad had a rental house and decided
we would move me in. My daughter and I had been staying at my dad's for about 6 months. My step–mom has never liked my dad's children so she
would consistently ask my dad when we were leaving. I was sitting in the basement where our room was. It was a bright blue and usually it was so
nice to walk into. I heard my dad and step–mom yelling upstairs. My dad was arguing that he didn't want her son staying at our house because he used
heroin. My dad is a lawyer in town. He's always been pretty uptight and firm. She was arguing that she wanted me to leave. There was really no

My Experience In My Life
As I lay in the back seat of the car, asleep I start getting really annoyed by all the restroom breaks we have to take......Cause I just want to get there.
But as my mom always says, "a good adventure takes time to start, and an even better adventure is saddening to end." But it's not ending cause it
hasn't even started! That's when I realized I was daydreaming, and when my cousin Olivia, and grandma woke me up I thought it was for another
restroom break, but it wasn't. . .
When I slowly opened my tired eyes from the car ride, they filled with joy as I saw a big log house! It had a huge deck, it was two stories, almost 3
because it was on a hill and it looked like it had a full basement! We walked inside and it had a huge living room, really nice kitchen, and a big
bathroom. . . My aunt told Olivia and I to go check out the upstairs. It has 3 bedrooms. One for Olivia, the others was for My aunt Midge and Bo. I
was confused. . .
"Where's my room?" I said, with a sad look on my face. She said, "Go look down stairs, around the corner, and through the door on the left." I
smiled and ran down the stairs. . . I was even more confused. That's the way to the Basement, I thought in my head. There were carpet stairs. Then
at the end of the stairs, there was two ways to go. There was a small toy room to the left with a bathroom. I went right. . . Filled with excitement, and
so amazed, I see an amazingly big room! There was a flat screen TV, ping pong table, and 2 couches. Then I saw

Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man
Invisible Man
Summary One
In The Comic Book World of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, Jean–Christophe Cloutier talks about how Ellison's work was influenced by comic books.
Ellison's influences included both comic strips and movies. Cloutier states that Ellison's novel could depict a more elaborated and complex picture
compared to a comic strip that left an 'invisible mark' on Invisible Man (313). The themes that Ellison introduced in Invisible Man, that were pulled
from comic books, included: violence, young culture, heroism, and the life living in Harlem. Cloutier also states that both Ellison's work and comic
strips questioned whether American fantasies and myths contributed to an individual's culture that would later lead to unrealistic ... Show more content

Yaszek also stated that she believed that Ellison's novel was not science fiction but more so Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is an international aesthetic
movement concerned with the relations of science, technology, and race (297). Yaszek says that its goal was to combat the whitewashed vision of the
future, adding a black face onto the future. This was because blackness was tied to the failure of progress and technological catastrophe. Though Ellison
did not consider himself to be within this genre, Yaszek explained why his writings do fit within the criteria. Ellison rethinks reality and history, by
using Invisible Man, which enabled him to rewire the relation between technology, race, and art in the novel. Afrofuturism "is not just about reclaiming
the history of the past, but about reclaiming the history of the future as well" (300). The future was set by the future industry, this was the group that
believed that blackness equals catastrophe throughout the world. Afrofuturists also believe that technology should eliminate racial distinctions, getting
rid of the "digital divide". The protagonist in Invisible Man began to understand this after he was hiding in the basement. Moving into the basement

Critical Analysis Of David Lindsay Abaire's 'Good People'
Everybody has a class no matter if your poor or rich. Examining the difference between Southie and Chestnut Hill you can tell which class is poor
and which class is rich. Through "Good People", David Lindsay Abaire argues that rich people and poor people has a different life styles. This can
be seen through his use of imagery, characterization and conflict. In this play, David Lindsay Abaire uses imagery to shows what type of life style
that Southie and Chestnut Hill has. Firstly, Southie has many poor people and broken things around them. For example, Abaire shows how
Southie's environment looks by the narration of the play, "The alley behind the Dollar store. There's a dumpster back there and a rusty chair and a
door labelled Dollar store" (5). Another way, Chestnut Hill has many rich people and many expensive things. For example, Abaire narrates about
Mikes house in details, "Lights up on a beautiful home. The living room takes up most of the space. Up and left we may see part of a foyer that
leads to the front door. Doorways and corridors lead off to other parts of the house– the kitchen, the dining room, maybe we see a staircase that leads up
to the bedroom" (105). The author went into details to show how rich Mike is. Again, Abaire is showing us that anyone from Southie will try their
luck to get more money. For example, Margret is playing bingo with her friends in a basement of a church, "Margaret, jean and Dottie are at a folding
table in the basement of a

The Forest Of The Rumpi Hills
The forests of the Rumpi Hills also contain what is commonly referred to as the Rumpi Hills Forest Reserve or previously known as the Rumpi
Hills Native Administration Forest Reserve created by Forestry Ordinance No 38 of 1937 and approved by Forestry Ordinance No 16756/79 of 2nd
July, 1941 (SWPA, 2016). The North Boundary is the road from Lipenja Mukete through Ikoi and Dikome Ngolo to Madie; the South Boundary goes
through Nalende, Monyange, Itoki and Ilor to Moko. Whereas the East Boundary, goes through Dikome Balue, Mofako, Itende to Bisoro; the West
Boundary goes through Dibonda and Ndian and Ituka to Lipenja which is also the starting point of the reserve (SWPA, 2016). These boundaries give
the Rumpi Hills Forest Reserve a characteristic inverted letter "C" shape and structure, see figure 7.
The reserve is composed of land belonging to the Ngolo, Bima and Balue tribes, the first two form part of the North West while the latter, forms part
of the South East area. Most of the villages are on top of the hills, so that, a more or less vertical climb of anything up to 400 meters has to be faced
before reaching a village or settlement.
The proposal that, part of the Rumpi Hills forests should be made a forest reserve was first made by Mr Rosevear in a memorandum written in 1933
on the potential forest reserves of the Kumba Division, Cameroon (SWPA, 2016). The actual preliminary survey of the area was done by Mr F.S Collier
in 1937, after a tour round the approximate

Quelling Fear
Cyril Richard "Rick" Rescorla was a United States Army officer and private security officer originally from the United Kingdom who served in
Northern Rhodesia and as a commissioned officer in the Vietnam War, where he was a second lieutenant in the United States Army. After the 1988
bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, Rescorla began to worry about a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. When Rescorla
asked Daniel Hill, a friend from Rhodesia that was trained in counter terrorism measures, how he would attack the building were he a terrorist, Hill
asked to see the basement. The two walked down to the basement parking garage without being stopped by any visible security, Hill pointed to an
easily accessible load–bearing column, explaining how easy it would be for an attack to be carried out in a similar manner. That year, Rescorla and
Hill wrote a report to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site, insisting on the need for more security in the parking
garage. Their recommendations, which would have been expensive to implement, were ignored (Stewart, 2002).
Following the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing, Rescorla invited Hill to New York, where he hired him as a security consultant in order to assess
the building 's security. Although no arrests had yet been made in the case, Rescorla suspected that the bomb had been planted by Muslims. Hill went

How Does Shakespeare Use Metaphors In Romeo And Juliet
Language can change the way we read a passage. Authors write in a way that the reader can feel a certain way. If authors didn't write their books
like this reading would be boring. In "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare wrote so that you could feel the love between them. In John Green's "The

History Of Egypt And Southwestern Part Of Egypt
In the past periods, the northwestern part of Sudan and southwestern part of Egypt (Kehl and Bornkamm, 1993) were with great effective moisture,
which are evident from archaeological sites associated with remnants of playa or lake deposits. This was the source of recharge in the NSAS. The
estimated recharge rates of the pluvial period were a little high at the Uweinat highlands and central Sudan area (7–15 mm/year), and low in northern
Sudan and southern Egypt area (6–8 mm/year) (Fig. 13). During the filling–up process, the high hydraulically conductive sandstones (~ 4.4Г—10–5 to
1.3Г—10–4 ms–1) in the area between central Sudan and Uweint–Asawn uplift were filled up with water to the surface with a general flow in a NE

The groundwater flow from the foothills of the Uweinat highlands has followed the relief of the underlying basement rocks. As the aquifer became
full and the groundwater level rose to the ground surface at the Uweinat area, the excess precipitation has formed drainage systems flowing in an ENE

Linden Hills and the Struggles That Come with I Essay
There are three ways Luther Nedeed is simultaneously a positive and negative role model for young men who represent the ages of Willie and
Lester. First, Luther Nedeed believes in the importance of family but while doing so, he destroys many people, especially his wife and son. This is
important because it shows that people can feel a certain way, but in the end, actions speak louder than words. Second, Luther Nedeed inspires hope
and shows that the American dream is possible but while achieving this dream, it causes some people to sell themselves out. This is significant
because it shows that if the prize to achieve the dream is the loss of one's soul or compromise of one's standards, the price is too high to pay. Third,
Nedeed wants to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When his son was born, he was light–skinned so he banished him and his wife into the basement where his son would die of starvation. He also
ruined Laurel Dumont after her husband left her by telling her that her lease was no longer valid and she had to leave. As a result, Laurel commits
suicide by jumping into an empty swimming pool. This is the negative side of this coin. Young men such as Willie and Lester do not need to see
people ruining other people's lives. They need to realize that what they say and preach should be how they act. Unfortunately, Luther fails to do that.
Luther Nedeed inspires hope and shows that the American dream is possible. Linden Hills is an affluent black community where many people strive
to live because of its fame and what it immediately does to your status once you move in. The Nedeed family started from scratch, one of them with
just a cardboard suitcase and a dream, another one who poured cement for numerous foundations, and another who gambled every dime to keep the
community afloat during the Depression. Young men who represent the ages of Wilie and Lester need to know that if you work hard enough, the
American dream is achievable. It shows them that you must work hard and if you work hard enough, your opportunity may come one day. However,
the American dream will cause some people to sell themselves out. By creating Linden Hills and maintaining it, Luther Nedeed has created monsters in
the people who will

The Basic Function Of A Police Officer
The Use of Force
It is the basic function of a police officer to deal with any problems that might require the use of coercive force according to Carl B. Klockars
(Dempsey and Frost 2011). I feel it is how they uses that force is what makes the difference between a good officer and a bad one. This first example
from (www.justice.gov) is of an officer that uses excessive force on a suspect that is already unter control, the only good i seen out of this is that the
other officer on the scene reported his conduct to their supervisor.
"This case arose from Boone 's use of excessive force against Orville Hill during Hill's arrest on Feb. 19, 2013. During the incident, Boone arrived at a
scene where three fellow Des Moines police officers were holding Hill on the ground and a fourth officer was standing over the group. Boone ran up
to the group and kicked Hill in the face, knocking out two of Hill's teeth and breaking his nose. Other officers reported Boone's conduct to supervisors
after learning that Boone had submitted a written report in which he failed to account truthfully for his actions. On March 13, 2015, a jury found
Boone guilty of violating Hill's civil rights by using unreasonable force".
My next example shows were an off–duty officer used a text book case of the use of deadly force, i feel the suspect was hunting the officer and would
have killed the officer given the chance.

The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Ever wondered what perfect society would be like? At some point everyone has dreamt of a society where there is total peace and equality for all
peoples alike. When reading "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, she describes what most people would think of as the perfect small town setting.
In the town, families and friends get together every year to hold an annual lottery in the town's square. However; this is not an average lottery and
it turns out that this small village has a very dark secret. "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula LE Guin , is more imaginary than
anything else. In Omelas there are green hills and beautiful meadows. People throw big parties with all the food and drink you could possibly
consume. But this perfect society in the green hills has a dirty secret too. There is a small child about the age of 12 kept in a closet, and that child
must bear all the pain for the entire city of Omelas. Without the child the city is no different than any other, and some of its citizens can't forget about
the secret and choose to leave. In these stories both authors discuss the idea of a perfect world and challenge the reader to consider what a utopia really
is. After reading these two articles, the authors show you there cannot be a utopia if even a single person is suffering, which is also why there can't be
a perfect society because of human nature.
In the story of Omelas there are rolling green hills and large music festivals with phenomenal food and drink at

The sickly sweet smell of hot summer air is so thick I can almost taste it as it enters my nose and I'm instantly transported back to a little North
Carolina college town. The radio and air conditioning start to fade away as I open the car door to the sounds of birds chirping and teenagers

the dorms, I inhale sharper then a knife, and a petite girl in a screaming neon yellow staff shirt with shiny orange hair and a pink tiara says, "hi." I
mutter a "hi" back barely audible. I feel a nudge on my back slowly urging me forward and inside. I first notice the neon lanyards that aren't quite
yellow but not green enough to be green that are around all the kids necks. I suddenly feel stupid, like I shouldn't be at a camp for smart kids, all

Fallingwater was built in a Nature Reserve, which provides a basic pure natural environment. Rather than have the waterfall in occupant's view, the
designer of the house, Wright, placed the house right on the top of the waterfall to make it a part of occupant's lives. The integration of the house with

Essay on Fear in Cellar Stairs
Fear in Cellar Stairs
Poetry is about emotion –– not only the emotion displayed in the many layers
of a poem's language, but also the emotional layers created in the reader.
Some poetry can be light and happy, other poetry can be ecstatic and ethereal;
and at the opposite extreme, poetry can be dark and downright threatening. Such
a poem is "Cellar Stairs" by the contemporary poet Thomas Lux.
"It's rickety down to the dark," states the first line. The poem starts out with
an image of darkness, compounded by the feeling of instability ("rickety"). The
lack of any physical room or area leaves us feeling disoriented and groundless.
All we know is that we are going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But we are still
afraid.
Lines five through nine describe the normally harmless objects that reside on the shelf.
This time, though, the objects are dangerous. Everything has an edge –– the shears, the weed
"hacker," the ice pick –– except the poison, which can kill both kinds of vermin, rats and
bugs (6–7). A triple threat, the shelf: we can be poisoned either of two ways or stabbed.
The landing, normally a safe area on any flight of stairs, is also trapped: the keg of
roofing nails that beckons your face to slam into it (8–9). This describes another level
of emotion, as well. We have progressed from being afraid of the dark to being scared for
our life. The specific threats have been identified and we are under attack.
Lines ten through eighteen become globally symbolic of torture, while maintaining the
chilling level of personal threat. The fuse box goes from a damning symbol of sin (the
"slot machine" – gambling is a sin) (11) to a symbol of death (the switch for the electric
chair that "the warden pulls") (12). The author speaks of the boots, singular, on every
stair, alone (14–16). The "dead" left them there, "short–legged" on their way down to the
Hell at the bottom of the stairs (16–17).

Dehumidification Research Papers
Dehumidification Tips for Properties in Wake Forest, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and The Triangle It is important to keep your basement and crawl space
dry. Because allowing moisture to collect in these areas puts your property and your health at risk. Damp surfaces can invite mold, wood rotting, and
water–loving insects. If these problems manage to spread, your respiratory health worsens, as molds and foul odors can cause allergies and asthma
attacks. With the right dehumidifaction and moisture control techniques, you can avoid these problems from happening in your basement and crawl

These systems carry air throughout your home, and the slightest damage can invite air leaks into your basement. Inspecting the condition of your duct

install a dehumidifier and a sump pump. A dehumidifier reduces the level of humidity in the air, while the sump pump extracts water from your
basement. Both systems are capable of removing moisture in the air and the surrounding area. Between the dehumidifier and the sump pump, the sump

Diary of...a Cleaner Outer Spring cleaning arrived even earlier at Cottage 40 than spring this year. In early February, I was noticed the pungent odor of
the Buck Hill–delivered hardwood ablaze in my fireplace. Problem was, I was in my basement. There is no fireplace in my basement. Given that
Cottage 40 in its first incarnation burned to the ground, the house has bad fire juju. Before calling 911, I decided to cajole my personal architectural
advisor and neighbor, Jean McCoubrey, into taking a walk down the stairs to take a whiff. "Try checking the cleanout," she suggested. I wasn't quite
sure what a cleanout was (except as it pertained to a quinquennial procedure advised for individuals of a certain age), but I deduced Jean was referring

away. Beyond the house are the woods, littered with pine needles from the rows of trees my grandpa planted when he moved there. The whole
area is surrounded by the overpowering smell of pine, and the silence the woods carries; it brings a calming, peaceful sensation to me. As the years
have gone on, the house and I have aged, grown, and changed together. Walking up the cracked cement steps, I enter the house through a wood
lacquer door. The smell that first hits my nose is the cigarette smoke from Grandpa. Once inside, to my right, is the dining room that is typically
filled with food and laughter. During the holidays we gather there and fill our bellies with the food that we have all brought, and stuff ourselves
with the sweets that grandma has baked. To the left as I enter the door is the kitchen which is always warm from the oven being used constantly
with cooks bustling about like bees. If a turkey or ham was not in the oven, there are cookies or brownies or my personal favorite, rhubarb pie. I
would salivate anticipating the sweet, tart taste to hit my lips, and I would devour it with greed. Straight ahead of the entrance is the basement door.
The basement steps are simply the wood floor beams that were never completed. The basement was their storage space and where their appliances
were such as their water heater, which gave off a soft hum. The basement had the faint smell of vinegar because my grandparents liked to pickle, so
they had shelves in the basement cluttered with jars of various things that they pickled. Going back up the stairs and through the kitchen is the carpeted
living room. The far side of the room

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Summary

  • 1. Farm Descriptive Essay The Farm Awakens The arrival of the six children wearing wrinkled clothes and half shut eyes ironically revived the empty ranch and brought life back into each and every crevice. The rusty gates creaked as they swung open, revealing the world of tall grass and herds of cattle hidden deep in the hills of Nevada. Two cars, filled to capacity, rolled up the dusty, dirt road leaving behind all sense of civilization. They arrived at night. Thousands of white lights illuminated the sky normally blanketed by the bright streets back home. The air smelled and felt fresh. The eerie quiet hid the sleeping animals, but because of the grinding gravel and anxious screams of joy, the children's noise bounced between the mountain sides and awoke the farm. Both cars parked in front of the white picket fence lining the house and duffle bags dumped out the back of the SUV's filled with sweaters, toiletries, pants, blankets and pretty much anything else they could fit. The strong, stocky fathers slung the bags over their shoulders and brought them inside, turned on the lights, and the outside world was forgotten as they admired the inside of their home for the week. When the door opened, 5 pairs of boots stomped inside, shuffling their feet along the thick, bristly rug that read "Welcome Home!". As their heads revolved around the room, Dylan and Grace, the two oldest, led the pack of children naively glancing past the cowhide rugs and rustic furniture the parents admired. They traveled room to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Clarisse's 'Gone': A Short Story Clarisse was forgotten, she wasn't remembered. She was gone. Simply gone. Due to the rumor Mildred spread around town, many believed Clarisse had unfortunately died in a car accident. Others created their own fictional story of Clarisse's mysterious disappearance. Those who ignored her had no idea that she was gone, or that she even existed in the first place. However, few knew the real story behind Clarisse and what really happened after her so called "car accident". Despite all the theories, it all began the day when the fire company was called to Clarisse's home. The abundance of her books were kept safely in her room. Many of these treasures were given to Clarisse by her uncle. She knew that she wouldn't be able to hide these books forever. The books were securely hidden in the closet closest to the window. She was sure no one would look in this place, since it would be most obvious. In the closet , there was a small, handcrafted board, behind the freshly ironed and perfectly hung dresses. The wooden board was covering a hole in the wall. This empty space in the wall was filled with her beloved books, just as they filled her heart. One evening a firemen stopped by her home asking questions about a book collection. This sudden spark of in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her feet hurt from the stones, twigs, and hard ground in the woods. All she wanted to do was find The Traveling Library and to be apart of a bigger picture. She read about them once, not that many people read anymore, but she knew that those were the people she belonged with. Most importantly, Clarisse wanted to find Montag. Possibly for reasons that were bigger than just flipping a page in a book, or talking about an author. She kept following the river and began to read some of her books to take her mind off of the pain in her feet. After a few hours, she heard the Hound and knew that if she followed the Hound, she would find Montag. She followed the Hound for many miles, until it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fallingwater is approximately 43 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. This home was built partly over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Laurel Highlands. • 5. Clay Street Hill Railroad History The first successful cable–operated street railway was the Clay Street Hill Railroad, which opened on August 2, 1873. The promoter of the line was Andrew Smith Hallidie, and the engineer was William Eppelsheimer. The line involved the use of grip cars, which carried the grip that engaged with the cable, towing trailer cars; the design was the first to use grips. The term "grip" became synonymous with the operator. The line started regular service on September 1, 1873, and its success led it to become the template for other cable car transit systems. It was a financial success, and Hallidie's patents were enforced on other cable car promoters, making him wealthy. The next cable car line to open was the Sutter Street Railway, which converted... At its peak, it operated five lines all of which converged into Market Street to a common terminus at the Ferry Building; during rush hours, cars left that terminus every 15 seconds. Telegraph Hill Railroad in San Francisco 1884–1886 The Telegraph Hill Railroad was a funicular railway that operated using two cars permanently attached to a cable. The car going downhill helped to counterbalance the car going uphill. The Telegraph Hill Railroad opened in 1884. It was promoted by Frederick O. Layman. The incline ran along Greenwich Street, from Powell Street to Layman's Pioneer Park Observatory. The observatory was a large resort complex near the present location of Coit Tower. The attraction offered telescopes for the viewing public from which to observe the wonders of the San Francisco Bay and a restaurant. On the roof was a "time ball," clearly visible to ships in the Bay. Every day at noon the ball was dropped so that ship's captains could set their chronometers by observing it. • 6. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a horror young adult literature written by Ransom Riggs. It tells Jacob Portman's story who followed clues that lead him to a house for refugees on the Cairnholm Island off the coast of Wales, where his grandfather used to stay during the Second World War back in the 1940s. The Cairnholm Island itself only had one phone and was powered with generators that shut off at 10 pm everyday, foreshadowing the fact that Jacob would go back in time later on. The peculiar children all lived with Miss Peregrine in a 'time loop', created by Miss Peregrine herself. Because of this, the children didn't age; everyday they repeated September 3rd, 1940 over and over again. For seventy years they had stayed on that day, although their experience of it is continuous, thus they were able to remember what they did yesterday, although other things remained the same. Habits may be boring, but it was key for their safety. Monsters, called the hollowgasts, were hunting down these peculiar children. By being in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the novel Death of an Englishman, Cipolla told the Marshall that he grew up during the war, similar to the peculiar children. However, even though time 'stopped' for the children in 1940 and the war really stopped in 1945, either Cipolla or the children were never free. The war affected more deeply than just the bodies. Because of the war, Cipolla moved away from home and didn't have enough education to work a white–collared job in the future. He never led a satisfying life because of what happened in his childhood. Meanwhile, most of the children were 'refugees' of their own parents who thought their children were swapped by the devil; thus they were peculiar. With them coming into Miss Peregrine's house, they were saving themselves from their parents, the hollowgasts, and also the Nazi. They would not age in the time loop, let alone live a free life; if they wanted to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Development Of Modernism After World War II After the Second World War, attention immediately turned towards reconstructing a better world. Like the earlier world war, it destroyed a previous social and economic order (Curtis, 1996). Many of tall buildings were built to meet the large number of human requirements. Modernism was rapidly developed at that time. This essay aims to explore the development of modernism after World War II by compare and contrast the two apartments which are Hansaviertel Apartment in German and Society Hill Towers in the USA. It first discusses the similarity of the two chosen buildings. Then explains the difference of design, which includes surroundings, building form and the apartment layout. Furthermore, explore the factors lead to those difference which are policy, the influence of the other architects and architects' own belief. As cities were destroyed during the war, there were increasing needs of buildings especially the apartments and houses. These two chosen projects have the same functions as apartments. They were both high–rise buildings, which were built as a part of the redevelopment of the city after the war. • 8. The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty Picked mostly on a whim, I was kind of excited to watch this to trash talk it as what reviews I had seen weren't very kind. But The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is actually really watchable. Of course it isn't great, but it's certainly not the train wreck I was led to believe. Parts were actually scary, with a bit of a silent hill vibe to them and while the ending is more than a little on the predictable side of things. That in no way hampers the enjoy ability of watching it all play out. Thomas Kaiser (Ethan Peck) is an artist and a recluse with few friends. Since childhood he has had a reccurring dream with a sleeping woman, Briar Rose (India Eisley). Though he always awakens before he can kiss and wake her. My one of my two issue's with The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is that it's a bit to slow to get going. Though once it got going it was great. My other being the predictability of what's going to happen. Maybe I'm just jaded from seeing to many horror films over the years, but I saw the twist from about the thirty minute mark. Final thoughts, overall I really liked it. Was it a masterpiece? No, of course not as few films are. But it was entertaining and I don't consider watching a complete waste of time. The visuals are nice, the pacing is solid and it has a great dread location that is dripping with atmosphere. Would I recommend it? Yes, I just recommend going into with an open mind and a six–pack. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Short Hills New Jersey Essay Short Hills New Jersey real estate is one of the most sought after for many good reasons, one of them is that it is very close to New York City. In fact, many residents work in Manhattan. It helps a lot that from early on, the village has always had a good connection to the city of New York by means of transportation. The founder of Short Hills New Jersey, a millionaire named Stewart Hartshorn had the vision and foresight to transform his rolling 1,552–acre property into a model village with sophisticated planning. For example, Hartshorn would have a new railroad station built in the Short Hills, in addition to the railroad connection between Hoboken, New Jersey and New York Cityalready in existence. Hartshorn's foresight with regards to Short Hills New Jersey real estate is rather like Bugsy Seagel's transformation of a portion of the Nevada desert into the thriving Las Vegas gambling resort. The only difference is that the former envisioned a peaceful community with plenty of greenery, marked by the so–called Short Hills Park that continues to uplift the image of the area to this day. • 11. Descriptive Essay About A House It was a dark brown house with red shutters. It was placed up on a hill so in the winter it was so difficult to pull the car in the garage. Inside, the walls were tan and mustard yellow. It was plain in the house but I didn't expect much. It smelt like the over–done scentsy that I put in. It was called apple–butter and that's exactly what the house smelt of. It was three stories and the basement was half finished. I painted the door a dark red and it made the whole house stick out. I remember it being so welcoming and now when I think about it, I get a cold shiver down my spine. There were holes in some of the walls from things being thrown. The front doors lock was splitting apart, the trim on the sides on the door was broken off. If those walls could talk I would go back in there for a day just to listen. I was 17 years old and moving out on my own. My dad had a rental house and decided we would move me in. My daughter and I had been staying at my dad's for about 6 months. My step–mom has never liked my dad's children so she would consistently ask my dad when we were leaving. I was sitting in the basement where our room was. It was a bright blue and usually it was so nice to walk into. I heard my dad and step–mom yelling upstairs. My dad was arguing that he didn't want her son staying at our house because he used heroin. We walked inside and it had a huge living room, really nice kitchen, and a big bathroom. . . My aunt told Olivia and I to go check out the upstairs. It has 3 bedrooms. One for Olivia, the others was for My aunt Midge and Bo. I was confused. . . "Where's my room?" I said, with a sad look on my face. She said, "Go look down stairs, around the corner, and through the door on the left." I smiled and ran down the stairs. . . I was even more confused. That's the way to the Basement, I thought in my head. There were carpet stairs. Then at the end of the stairs, there was two ways to go. There was a small toy room to the left with a bathroom. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man Invisible Man Summary One In The Comic Book World of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, Jean–Christophe Cloutier talks about how Ellison's work was influenced by comic books. Ellison's influences included both comic strips and movies. Cloutier states that Ellison's novel could depict a more elaborated and complex picture compared to a comic strip that left an 'invisible mark' on Invisible Man (313). The themes that Ellison introduced in Invisible Man, that were pulled from comic books, included: violence, young culture, heroism, and the life living in Harlem. Afrofuturism is an international aesthetic movement concerned with the relations of science, technology, and race (297). This was because blackness was tied to the failure of progress and technological catastrophe. Though Ellison did not consider himself to be within this genre, Yaszek explained why his writings do fit within the criteria. Ellison rethinks reality and history, by using Invisible Man, which enabled him to rewire the relation between technology, race, and art in the novel. Afrofuturism "is not just about reclaiming the history of the past, but about reclaiming the history of the future as well" (300). The future was set by the future industry, this was the group that believed that blackness equals catastrophe throughout the world. Examining the difference between Southie and Chestnut Hill you can tell which class is poor and which class is rich. Through "Good People", David Lindsay Abaire argues that rich people and poor people has a different life styles. This can be seen through his use of imagery, characterization and conflict. In this play, David Lindsay Abaire uses imagery to shows what type of life style that Southie and Chestnut Hill has. Firstly, Southie has many poor people and broken things around them. For example, Abaire shows how Southie's environment looks by the narration of the play, "The alley behind the Dollar store. There's a dumpster back there and a rusty chair and a door labelled Dollar store" (5). Another way, Chestnut Hill has many rich people and many expensive things. For example, Abaire narrates about Mikes house in details, "Lights up on a beautiful home. The living room takes up most of the space. Up and left we may see part of a foyer that leads to the front door. Doorways and corridors lead off to other parts of the house– the kitchen, the dining room, maybe we see a staircase that leads up to the bedroom" (105). The author went into details to show how rich Mike is. Again, Abaire is showing us that anyone from Southie will try their luck to get more money. For example, Margret is playing bingo with her friends in a basement of a church, "Margaret, jean and Dottie are at a folding table in the basement of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The North Boundary is the road from Lipenja Mukete through Ikoi and Dikome Ngolo to Madie; the South Boundary goes through Nalende, Monyange, Itoki and Ilor to Moko. Whereas the East Boundary, goes through Dikome Balue, Mofako, Itende to Bisoro; the West Boundary goes through Dibonda and Ndian and Ituka to Lipenja which is also the starting point of the reserve (SWPA, 2016). These boundaries give the Rumpi Hills Forest Reserve a characteristic inverted letter "C" shape and structure, see figure 7. The reserve is composed of land belonging to the Ngolo, Bima and Balue tribes, the first two form part of the North West while the latter, forms part of the South East area. Most of the villages are on top of the hills, so that, a more or less vertical climb of anything up to 400 meters has to be faced before reaching a village or settlement. The proposal that, part of the Rumpi Hills forests should be made a forest reserve was first made by Mr Rosevear in a memorandum written in 1933 on the potential forest reserves of the Kumba Division, Cameroon (SWPA, 2016). Quelling Fear Cyril Richard "Rick" Rescorla was a United States Army officer and private security officer originally from the United Kingdom who served in Northern Rhodesia and as a commissioned officer in the Vietnam War, where he was a second lieutenant in the United States Army. After the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, Rescorla began to worry about a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. When Rescorla asked Daniel Hill, a friend from Rhodesia that was trained in counter terrorism measures, how he would attack the building were he a terrorist, Hill asked to see the basement. The two walked down to the basement parking garage without being stopped by any visible security, Hill pointed to an easily accessible load–bearing column, explaining how easy it would be for an attack to be carried out in a similar manner. That year, Rescorla and Hill wrote a report to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site, insisting on the need for more security in the parking garage. Their recommendations, which would have been expensive to implement, were ignored (Stewart, 2002). This is important because it shows that people can feel a certain way, but in the end, actions speak louder than words. Second, Luther Nedeed inspires hope and shows that the American dream is possible but while achieving this dream, it causes some people to sell themselves out. This is significant because it shows that if the prize to achieve the dream is the loss of one's soul or compromise of one's standards, the price is too high to pay. Third, Nedeed wants to... • 28. Personal Narrative: Lauri Bruning Since the first day of kindergarten, Lauri Bruning and I quickly became best friends. We hit it off immediately and were inseparable from the very start. Lauri had always been an awkwardly long, gawky child. Pairing that with her blonde hair, I used to call her a banana. She had funny mannerisms, round wire–framed glasses, and a gap between her front teeth. We were both painfully shy and didn't have many other friends, so Lauri and I often had sleepovers at each other's houses where we could celebrate in our weirdness together. In the summer, Lauri would came to my house, where we would pretend to be magical mermaids in my parent's pool. Lauri and her siblings invited a couple of their friends over to sled down the massive hill, and that's where my sister and I came in. We all took turns going down the hill, and afterwards we were driven back up to the top by Lauri's dad with his truck or by her oldest brother in his four–wheeler. One year, Lauri's older brother connected a sled to the back of his four–wheeler with a rope and towed me and Lauri around the snow–covered yard. • 30. The Basic Function Of A Police Officer The Use of Force It is the basic function of a police officer to deal with any problems that might require the use of coercive force according to Carl B. Klockars (Dempsey and Frost 2011). I feel it is how they uses that force is what makes the difference between a good officer and a bad one. This first example from (www.justice.gov) is of an officer that uses excessive force on a suspect that is already unter control, the only good i seen out of this is that the other officer on the scene reported his conduct to their supervisor. "This case arose from Boone 's use of excessive force against Orville Hill during Hill's arrest on Feb. 19, 2013. During the incident, Boone arrived at a scene where three fellow Des Moines police officers were holding Hill on the ground and a fourth officer was standing over the group. Boone ran up to the group and kicked Hill in the face, knocking out two of Hill's teeth and breaking his nose. Other officers reported Boone's conduct to supervisors after learning that Boone had submitted a written report in which he failed to account truthfully for his actions. On March 13, 2015, a jury found Boone guilty of violating Hill's civil rights by using unreasonable force". My next example shows were an off–duty officer used a text book case of the use of deadly force, i feel the suspect was hunting the officer and would have killed the officer given the chance. • 31. The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Ever wondered what perfect society would be like? At some point everyone has dreamt of a society where there is total peace and equality for all peoples alike. When reading "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, she describes what most people would think of as the perfect small town setting. In the town, families and friends get together every year to hold an annual lottery in the town's square. However; this is not an average lottery and it turns out that this small village has a very dark secret. "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula LE Guin , is more imaginary than anything else. In Omelas there are green hills and beautiful meadows. People throw big parties with all the food and drink you could possibly consume. But this perfect society in the green hills has a dirty secret too. There is a small child about the age of 12 kept in a closet, and that child must bear all the pain for the entire city of Omelas. Without the child the city is no different than any other, and some of its citizens can't forget about the secret and choose to leave. In these stories both authors discuss the idea of a perfect world and challenge the reader to consider what a utopia really is. After reading these two articles, the authors show you there cannot be a utopia if even a single person is suffering, which is also why there can't be a perfect society because of human nature. • 32. Descriptive Essay On The Middle School The sickly sweet smell of hot summer air is so thick I can almost taste it as it enters my nose and I'm instantly transported back to a little North Carolina college town. The radio and air conditioning start to fade away as I open the car door to the sounds of birds chirping and teenagers chatting. I couldn't tell what is sweeter the freedom of being out of the car or the ice cream threatening to come back up. I walk around the car to meet mom and she just gives me a look that I know means she can tell I'm nervous. It's not like the opportunity to stay on a college campus two states away from home comes everyday. Sure I've been on sleep away trips but sure those were maybe a week, this would be three and those were before the awkward middle school phase set in. I was ready to try at least so I reassure her with a smile and start walking. We stop on the steps of the dorms, I inhale sharper then a knife, and a petite girl in a screaming neon yellow staff shirt with shiny orange hair and a pink tiara says, "hi." I mutter a "hi" back barely audible. I feel a nudge on my back slowly urging me forward and inside. I first notice the neon lanyards that aren't quite yellow but not green enough to be green that are around all the kids necks. I suddenly feel stupid, like I shouldn't be at a camp for smart kids, all because I don't have a lanyard. The second thing I notice is that everyone is smiling, we're about to be unofficial college students and submerged in school work for a few ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Essay on Fear in Cellar Stairs Fear in Cellar Stairs Poetry is about emotion –– not only the emotion displayed in the many layers of a poem's language, but also the emotional layers created in the reader. Some poetry can be light and happy, other poetry can be ecstatic and ethereal; and at the opposite extreme, poetry can be dark and downright threatening. Such a poem is "Cellar Stairs" by the contemporary poet Thomas Lux. "It's rickety down to the dark," states the first line. The poem starts out with an image of darkness, compounded by the feeling of instability ("rickety"). The lack of any physical room or area leaves us feeling disoriented and groundless. Lines ten through eighteen become globally symbolic of torture, while maintaining the chilling level of personal threat. A dehumidifier reduces the level of humidity in the air, while the sump pump extracts water from your basement. Both systems are capable of removing moisture in the air and the surrounding area. In early February, I was noticed the pungent odor of the Buck Hill–delivered hardwood ablaze in my fireplace. Problem was, I was in my basement. There is no fireplace in my basement. Given that Cottage 40 in its first incarnation burned to the ground, the house has bad fire juju. Before calling 911, I decided to cajole my personal architectural advisor and neighbor, Jean McCoubrey, into taking a walk down the stairs to take a whiff. "Try checking the cleanout," she suggested. I wasn't quite sure what a cleanout was (except as it pertained to a quinquennial procedure advised for individuals of a certain age), but I deduced Jean was referring to what lay behind a two–foot square cast iron door on the wall of the basement, directly below the fireplace, about a foot off floor level. • 41. Descriptive Essay On A House In Childhood Driving to Long Prairie, on the right side of the road, up a hill with a long, paved driveway will be a house to the left. This house is two–stories with a basement. The first time I saw it, the house had a worn out, light tan vinyl siding with faded, dark red shutters from years of Minnesota weather. At the end of the driveway was a garage that resembled the houses color. To the right of the driveway was a large stone wall that was overrun with wild grape vines. In the middle of the wall was a stairway that leads to an old, rundown playhouse. Also, there was a large, gray brick shed further away. Beyond the house are the woods, littered with pine needles from the rows of trees my grandpa planted when he moved there. The whole area is surrounded by the overpowering smell of pine, and the silence the woods carries; it brings a calming, peaceful sensation to me. As the years have gone on, the house and I have aged, grown, and changed together. Walking up the cracked cement steps, I enter the house through a wood lacquer door. The smell that first hits my nose is the cigarette smoke from Grandpa. Once inside, to my right, is the dining room that is typically filled with food and laughter. During the holidays we gather there and fill our bellies with the food that we have all brought, and stuff ourselves with the sweets that grandma has baked. To the left as I enter the door is the kitchen which is always warm from the oven being used constantly with cooks bustling about like bees. If a turkey or ham was not in the oven, there are cookies or brownies or my personal favorite, rhubarb pie. I would salivate anticipating the sweet, tart taste to hit my lips, and I would devour it with greed. Straight ahead of the entrance is the basement door. The basement steps are simply the wood floor beams that were never completed. The basement was their storage space and where their appliances were such as their water heater, which gave off a soft hum. The basement had the faint smell of vinegar because my grandparents liked to pickle, so they had shelves in the basement cluttered with jars of various things that they pickled.
