Geneticist Dr. Jef Boeke leverages decades of
experience in genome and molecular biology to serve
as professor and director of the Langone Medical
Center at New York University. A specialist in the field
of yeast genetics, Dr. Jef Boeke concurrently serves
as an organizer for the annual Sc2.0 and Synthetic
Genomes Conference.
This July, international scientists and scholars
gathered for the 4th annual Sc2.0 Conference at the
New York Genome Center. Since its inception, the
conference has served as a grounds for discussion
about the Synthetic Yeast Genome Project (Sc2.0),
which is the first of its kind to focus on creating a new
eukaryotic genome.

For the first time, the event was extended to cover
two days of scientific presentations and panels
addressing topics on both yeast and synthetic
genome engineering.
The conference featured a number of specialist-
led discussions, including Genome Engineering
and Society and What’s the Next Big Genome to
Be Synthesized? Professionals from the
Australian Wine Institute, White Labs, and
Synthetic Genomics, Inc., held panels on the
history and brewing of yeast genomes and their
effect on the taste of drinks such as beer and
wine. In the coming year, the 2016 international
conference will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland.
