Kim, K., & Mohr, A. O. N. E. (2017). 2016 Law Enforcement
Use of Social Media Survey. Washington, DC: The International
Association of Chiefs of Police.
This article represents a survey of social media use by police
departments in the United States. The study found that social
media use by the police is useful as a tool for engagement.
However, there are some significant barriers that have
prevented many police departments from adopting the use of
social media. One of the main challenges identified is the
inability of agencies to adopt a culture that supports social
media. The policy also have a challenge monitoring their social
media use and responding to information that they receive from
the public through social media. However, several police
agencies are already utilizing social media and it has brought
about several benefits to the police. The article provides an
extensive amount of data that can be used to improve
meaningful use of social media platforms for public
engagement.
Omand, D., Bartlett, J., & Miller, C. (2012). Introducing social
media intelligence (SOCMINT). Intelligence and National
Security, 27(6), 801-823.
This article addresses the use of social media as a source
of intelligent information for law enforcement officers. Law
enforcement officers use social media as a platform for sharing
information, but also a source of information. The article
introduces SOCMINT a new addition to the sources of law
enforcement intelligence. Social media is a good platform for
the collection and verification, and application of information.
However, there is a significant risk of this having a negative
effect if the use of social media is not legitimately managed.

4. This article represents a proposal for the correct use of social
media by law enforcement officers. The author acknowledges
that social media has become an important tool for
communication in the society today. This tool can be beneficial
for the society and can be used by the police for beneficial
purposes. However, the use of this platform is still quite risky
for the police. The use of social media can compromise criminal
cases and put the lives of the offices at risk. This article
proposes a model for social media use that will protect the
police from such risks. One of the proposed strategies include
the use of images instead of words to make searches. This
makes the searches less trackable by people who are looking for
information from law enforcement officers. This article is
important in revealing the importance of controlling law
enforcement social media use.
Summary:
The summarized articles above are consistent in showing that
social media is a beneficial tool for law enforcement officers. It
is a great platform for sharing important information on law and
order and can also be used as a source of information. However,
there are some significant challenges in the use of social media
by law enforcement officers such as the risk of sharing
information that will compromise criminal cases and the risking
of the lives of the law enforcement officers. Based on this
information, it is important to encourage the use of social media
in law enforcement agencies, but with significant control to
avoid the risks of social media.
