3. TRADE UNION
An organized association of workers in a trade,
group of trades, or profession, formed to
protect their rights and interests.
4. NEED OF TRADE UNIONS
Unions are important because
• they help set the standards for education, skill
levels, wages, working conditions, and quality
of life for workers.
• Union-negotiated wages and benefits are
generally superior to what non-union workers
receive.
• Most union contracts provide far more
protections than state and federal laws.
5. TRADE UNION IN INDIA
Vs.
TRADE UNION IN AMERICA
• TRADE UNIONS IN INDIA are registered and file annual
returns under the Trade Union Act (1926). Statistics on
Trade Unions are collected annually by the Labour
Bureau of the Ministry of Labour, Government of
India. The Trade Union movement in India is largely
divided along political lines and follows a pre-
Independence pattern of overlapping interactions
between political parties and unions. The net result of
this type of system is debated as it has both
advantages and disadvantages.
6. • The American Labor Union (ALU) was a radical labor
organization launched as the Western Labor Union (WLU)
in 1898.
• The officers consisted of a President, Vice-President,
Secretary-Treasurer, and an Executive Board of nine
members, which included the President and Vice-president.
The officers were elected biennially by a referendum vote
of the general membership.
• The government was more centralized than the typical
federation of trade unions of the time. For example, the
executive board could depose any general officer, and
affiliated organizations were not permitted to strike
without the approval of the executive board.

PLACKADU ESTATE, VANDIPERIYAR.
24. GLIMPSE OF THE CASE…
• The case is regarding verbal assault between a worker of INTUC and
his Supervisor.
• Three enquiries were conducted related to this case.
• Industrial Tribunal considered the validity of the enquiry as a
preliminary point.
• In the 1st enquiry the worker’s complaint was heard and taken into
consideration by the Tribunal.
• The second enquiry relating to an earlier proceeding having been
revived; clearly discloses the intention of the management to
somehow sent the workman out of employment.
• The workman himself took a back from the entire happening; tried
to resolve as there was verbal assault from both the parties.
• INTUC tried to work in favor of it’s worker but along with it trusted
blindly on him.
• As punishment, the worker was allowed only to work for 10 days in
a month.
25. Problems with trade unions in India?
• There are too many small unions instead of one large
union.
• This reduces their bargaining powers.
• Moreover, small trade unions do have a conflict of
interest.
• In India, political parties support some large trade
unions. This politicises them.
• Politicisation means compromise with workers’
interests.
• Most of the labour force is uneducated.
26. • Lack of education among the labour force leads to an
improper representation of the workforce.
• Unregistered unions do not get protection from civil
and criminal liability.
• The trade unions act does not apply to the informal
sector.
• A large section of the workforce is not represented.
• Trade unions are often under-financed.
• This means that they do not function to their full
potential.
