1. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, note
(note) Proportional Representation: Parties gain seats based on the
number of votes representatives get. Denser populated areas get
more representatives.
(Discuss) Is it fair that Louth has 5 TDs and Dublin has 40 as it is
split into Dublin central, Dublin west, Dublin Fingal, etc? Why do
you think this happens?
Homework
Will be action report.
Skills
Numeracy and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Remind students that action report is due in the next couple weeks.
2. Examine the process of voting and how someone wins.
Heading: Democracy 10 Date:
2. We’re skipping lesson 69 as a lot of it is repeated in
lesson 70, page 239, which we’ll examine today.
We are going to read pages 239 to 241 of the book.
We will take notes along the way examining how
you vote for several people at once in actual
elections, marking them 12,3,4, etc.
In your activity book then, you shall examine a
poem about voting and use the notes to answer the
questions.
Plan for today
3. I will need about twenty eight people to read today, most people only having
a single line or few words to do. Raise hands after each part.
(note) Party: a group of people with similar goals and opinions. A party
becomes the majority by having the most seats in government.
(note) The government is defined as those with authority to manage the
country. It can be one or more parties.
(note) Ballot: voting secretly.
(note) Quota: the minimum number a votes a candidate needs to be
elected.
(note) A quota is reached by counting the number of valid votes, dividing
by the number of seats available plus one and adding one to the result.
(Read – you don’t have to do it, but an example of counting votes is on page
94 of your activity books. Take a look at it now before going to page 93).
Page 239-241 reading and writing notes
4. Complete page 93 of the activity book, asking you to read a
poem and answer the questions.
1. The message of any poem can usually be deduced
from it’s first and last lines.
2. Think of the political parties, what they want and
how they affect you to answer question 2.
3. Look to your notes for question 3
4. Question four is personal but read page 241
#action to see again why they might not.
Task – activity book – page 93
5. Continue your action project report.
Remember presentation will be very
important.
