3. MULTIPLE MEANINGS
• Words can have many different meanings. Poets use these meanings to create works
of art!
• Poets use figurative language.
4. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IS…
• the use of words in an unusual or imaginative manner. Often figurative language
involves the use of a metaphor, a simile, personification, hyperbole, idiom, a
euphemism, and pun.
• Metaphor: Makes a comparison as if one thing were actually another.
• Simile: Makes a comparison using the words “like” or “as”.

details in the poem and determine the theme.
