The Theory Used By Epicurus
All over the world, throughout all time eras, it seems as though humans have always been asking the
fundamental question, what is goodness? Perspectives vary by culture, religion and from person to
person depending on countless variables. This question particularly interested the philosophers Plato
and Epicurus. Although both men had fully rational, valid, and interesting takes on the idea of
goodness, my argument is that Epicurus' ideology– in my opinion– is the most reasonable answer. In
this essay, I will begin by explaining Epicurus' hedonistic view, I will then explain why Plato
dissents, and then I will finish off by explaining why I believe Epicurus' idea is more reasonable.
Hedonism– the idea that pleasure is the greatest good, was the ethical theory used by Epicurus to
show us how to live a happy life. A prominent belief of his was that we needed to master our desires.
To do this, we must first understand our desires and where they come from. This means being able
to look at your desires, and understand those that are necessary for survival, for your happiness, and
those which are not necessary at all. By doing this, Epicurus would say that you will be able to make
wise decisions which will ultimately lead to a happy life.
Epicurus makes the point saying that when we judge something, let 's say a car for instance, we
judge it based on how it makes us feel. Does this car give you pleasure? Does it irritate you or cause
you pain? If it does cause you pain,

The Differences Between Alcohol Dependence
Results
Scan derived volumetric measurement data was acquired from the analysis team from the University
of Pennsylvania and were analyzed for test and control group members. The differences in alcohol
dependence(AD) test versus non–alcohol dependence(non–AD) control group means in
total(combined), right , and left hippocampal mean volumes, respectively were compared and
assessed for statistically significant differences using the t–test of the means for samples with
different variances. The significance level was set to 95 percent, making any difference with a p–
value lesser than 0.05 statistically insignificant.
A secondary analysis using multiple linear regressions to include potential variables was conducted.
These included the total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Jenny Lawson's Furiously Happy
The days I was caught in the storm of depression united me with Jenny Lawson's second book that
became my therapy for that period of time. It was recommended by a close friend who knew of the
challenges I faced in a haze of darkness. When she recited excerpts from the book, immediately, the
words changed from tangible squiggles to lived nights in distant insomnia.
On days I was unable to pull myself out of bed, I would read Furiously Happy while under my
covers, staring at the ceiling and dealing with the many voices that kept clawing and breaking each
layer down that built a fortress of self–doubt and underwater volcanos of self–loathing. Many
people do not understand these feelings that blossomed inside, and therefore bring their own
selective perspectives about mental illness devaluing my human in brain experiences. Explaining to
them proved to be harder.
While with a friend, I mentioned my experiences with depression and anxiety medication and her
response was that it was most definitely a placebo and that I should try and be more optimistic,
words have often heard. This not only invalidated my lived experiences, indirectly, she was calling
me a liar. This seems to be the most common opinion people hold about mental struggles, and Jenny
addresses this in her book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are very few books that cover the topic of depression that are hysterical while triggering my
hypothalamus emotion center. Her self–awareness is what really drew me into her writing. One of
the most profound moments was when she spoke about the silent war that those suffering from
mental illness face on a daily basis and the silent victory that no one knows about. The hidden nature
of mental illness is what creates a barrier. You cannot judge from mere appearance how loud and
loaded their brains truly

Reproductive Behavior Analysis
Discussion: Our results show that there was not a significant difference between the different tank
densities and the number of antennal groomings within them. (P=0.31). There was also no indication
of a statistically significant difference between the tanks when pheromones were not present and
when pheromones were present (see fig.1). One aspect of our results was close to having a
significant difference. There was no difference among the frequency of male antennal grooming
between the three different B. dubia densities with pheromones, but the data was close to being
statistically significant (p= 0.051), and we think that with more refined methods, and a better
understanding of B. dubia social interactions that future data may be statistically significant. We
thought that antennal activity would be the most important aspect of cockroach behavior when it
came to the spread of disease and social interactions, but our data did not support our hypothesis.
We made many observations, that we did not quantify, that demonstrated much more active behavior
in the presence of pheromones. These behaviors, including males approaching the cotton ball with
the female pheromones and the males sparring with each other, were much more common in the ...

The Test That Will Be Uses
Selection of test
The test that will be uses is a one– way ANOVA test. A one–way ANOVA test involved the analysis
of the difference between means of three or more groups and the variance within the groups
(Salkind, 2013). The research scenario is looking at the difference between three groups which are
individuals who cannot to identify hypertension lifestyle factors, can identify some hypertension
lifestyle factors and can identify all hypertension lifestyle factors and their willingness to engage in
self– care in addition to the variance within the groups. In addition, in a one–way ANOVA there is
one factor or independent variable and within the research scenario there is one factor which is
identifying hypertension lifestyle factors (Salkind, 2013).
Step 2: Level of significance
The research scenario does not pose a high risk to the participants involved, therefore the level of
significance will bet set to 0.05. A level of significance at 0.05 means that the researcher has
accepted 5 cases out of 100 for committing a type I error of rejecting the null when it is true and
accepting the research hypothesis (Salkind, 2013). The remaining 95 cases out of 100 a true null
hypothesis is accepted (Salkind, 2013).
Step 3: Selection of one–tailed or two–tailed test
An ANOVA test strictly looks at the overall difference between the means of groups and the
variance within groups, ANOVA test does not tell you where the difference lies, therefore there is no
direction (Salkind,

Reflection Of Plato's View On Love By Socrates
Finally, toward the end of the Symposium, Socrates speaks, giving an accurate account of love and
the correct use of Eros. He opposes all of the other speakers and says that love is not all about our
pleasure and sexual deviances, but to either impregnate the body and give life, or to impregnate the
soul and pass on knowledge. Socrates speaks as if Eros is a love for the other person, to love
someone so much that you want to enter into a bond that results in child rearing or a love for
mankind that you want to share all your knowledge with them to better their soul. He continues that
to be pregnant in the soul is better than to be pregnant in the body because when we are pregnant in
the soul, there is more to be given to others then caring for a newborn. In this response from
Socrates, it is hard to determine if he has it completely correct. I would imagine that without people
being pregnant in the body, we would eventually run out of people to pass our knowledge on to.
This, then, would have to be a both/and situation where each has a calling to one or the other or
both, and both forms of love would then be equal. Socrates is then saying that love itself in not a
god, but a messenger that is caught in between the divine realm of immortality and the earthly realm
of the mortal. Love then can reach the heights of the gods bringing messages from man and
returning to man with messages from god. Socrates is now showing that there is some divine link
between man and the divine, and this is love. This also shines light on the fact that because each
human had this link to the divine the human must in some way be part divine and part animal.
Because each human can love, can reason, and has these animal instincts and desires, man must also
be caught in between the divine and earthly worlds. Because we cannot physically move into that
divine realm, then we must have an entity that is part of us and can move freely in between, this
would be the soul. Socrates refutes all the other speeches about taking young boys as lovers for
one's own gratification and love being a god that permits all thing in the name of pleasure. In
conclusion, it is safe to say that, in our current era, Eros is absolutely

A Wretch but for Love: Shakespeare’s Sonnet 91 Essay
A Wretch but for Love: Shakespeare's Sonnet 91 Shakespeare's ninety–first sonnet continues to
address the young man to whom he has been writing the procreation sonnets. The theme of this
sonnet is the incomparable value of the young man's love. For Shakespeare, the pleasure of the
young man's love is greater than any other pleasure. His rejection of worldly pleasures for the
greater joy of love also appears to highlight a distinction Shakespeare wants to make between true
wealth and poverty. In doing so, he insinuates a social criticism about the notion of what is truly
valuable in this world. Shakespeare emphasizes these points through the structure of the poem,
which employs repetition and chiasmus, and through diction.
This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the tying, middle section between the first and third quatrains which both specifically address
the things in which people glory. Shakespeare begins the quatrain by referencing the humours,
saying that "every humor hath his adjunct pleasure/Wherein it finds a joy above the rest" (5–6). In
other words, a person takes pleasure in things that are associated with his or her disposition. Unlike
those people of high class and wealth who are able to boast in the things mentioned in the first
quatrain, the speaker finds "these particulars are not [his] measure" (7). These particular things in
which others glory, he does not. Instead, he "better[s]" (8), or "[does] better than, surpass[es],
excel[s]" (OED), these other pleasures in one general thing which is the best. The speaker may not
have all the material things of others, but he believes he has something much greater than worldly
pleasures. The third and final quatrain reveals what is the one best general thing that is better than all
the other pleasures: "Thy love" (9). Shakespeare then reiterates the pleasures measured in the first
stanza (only omitting "skill" (10), "their body's force" (2), and "hounds" (4)). This repetition
emphasizes the fact that the young man's love is greater than the worldly pleasures in which men
usually glory. Because the speaker has the young man's love, he says, "of all men's pride I boast"
(12). He can boast of, or glory in, all that in which men take

Comparing Memory Test Performance
The author of the following excerpt concluded that the study was statistically significant. The
hypothetical research article compared memory test performance between two groups of
participants: those who consumed a caffeinated beverage before the test and those who consumed a
non–caffeinated beverage:
An independent samples t–test was conducted to examine the difference between experimental
conditions on test performance. The results indicated a significant difference between participants
who consumed the caffeinated beverage and participants who did not, with participants in the
caffeinated group (M = 7.64, SD = 2.41) performing worse than participants in the non–caffeinated
group (M = 9.81, SD = 3.16), t (97) = 2.14, p < .05.
It tells that the t–statistic with 97 degrees of freedom was 2.14, and the corresponding p–value was
less than .05, specifically around 0.035. Therefore, it is appropriate to conclude the research study
was statistically significant.
But what does a statistically significant result really mean?
The main purpose of the most researchers in conducting a research study is to achieve a statistically
significant result. When we say statistically significant, it means that the result in a research study
was not attributed to chance. In addition, it also means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
P–value represents a decimal between 1.0 to below .01. Unfortunately, the level of commonly

that the whole study is just accidental. In other words, that there is one in twenty chance that a result
may be positive in spite of having no actual relationship. This value is an estimate of the probability
that the result has occurred by statistical accident. Thus, a small value of P represents a high level of

Coming Buy, Come Buy
Many feel that pleasure is a way for people to express their feelings in a way that is animalistic or
savage. Krista Lysack, author of Come Buy, Come Buy, has a different interpretation as to what
pleasure is. She views pleasure as simply "that which exceeds the norms of usefulness," not as a
greedy grab for something one desires. Pleasure is not something that really needs to be justified or
explained because it possesses value within itself. Explaining why you get pleasure from specific
objects or tasks is something that seems very difficult to do, other than saying that you do it because
you like it. Lysack later goes on to theorize that shopping becomes less and less about what is
useful, and more about what allows us to be distracted and entertained. Pleasure to her is a state of
being that is anything but stagnant and instead moves around to a variety of different areas. People's
interests are bound to change over a lifetime as few people at age twenty are likely to get the same
joy from tasks they performed when they were five.
Acting on one's pleasures would have previously been seen as excessive because it was considered
extreme to move away from what the norm was. The Victorian women were one of the first to break
away and form their pleasures solely on what they felt was fun. No one can really give an exact
reason for why we do things that are pleasurable because pleasure is different for everyone. Lysack's
final and most meaningful take on pleasure is that it

Introduction The study of human memory stretches back at least 2,000 years to Aristotle's early
attempts to understand memory in his treatise "On the Soul". (Masten, 2010) In this, he compared
the human mind to a blank slate and theorized that all humans are born free of any knowledge and
are merely the sum of their experiences. (Masten, 2010) Unfortunately, as life and our anatomy
would have it these experiences tend to fade away as we get older. As these memories are the pillars
of life's lessons learned, feelings of happiness, joy and love it is no doubt that we want to hold on to

to not eat chocolate before the memory test. Group 2 will consist of the other 25 males and 25
females who will be instructed to eat chocolate two hours before taking the memory test. Every
participant will be asked to read a chapter eight of Statics for Behavioral and Social Science 2nd
edition by David Tanner a two days before to taking the memory test.
Data Analysis:
In order to analyze the data, the significance level (p–value) was set to .05. This means that there is
a 5% chance of finding a difference between the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis.
Assuming that the null hypothesis is true, a p–value is the probability of the data falling outside of
the normal bell curve of the sample data. A p–value less than or equal to the set significance level is
considered statistically significant.
In addition, to setting the significance level it is important to determine the number of degrees of
freedom. This number shows how often the data can be free to vary. To calculate this, add up the
number of samples from each group and then subtract two. In this case the degree for freedom is
50+50 – 2 =98
With a set significant level and degrees of freedom, the t–value can then be determined by using the
t–table.
Results: After the t–test was conducted to compare men and women's performance on a memory test

ANSWER: The obligatory r value is –0.149 and this r value is not significant since the p–value for
this correlation coefficient or r is 0.424 which is extra than 0.05 or 0.01 and henceforth at 5% and
10% both level , the null hypothesis of insignificance cannot be rejected and the assumption is the r
value is not significant.

ANSWER: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides the values are displaying a stouter association secondary to upsurge in absolute r value.
9. The researchers stated that no significant relationship could be described between Hamstring
strength indices 60°/s and functional stability. Given the data in Table 5, explain why not.
ANSWER: It is correct as the p–values for Hamstring strength indices 60°/s and all variables
remained grander than 0.05. The p–values were 0.08, 0.06, 0.424, 0.506, and 0.802. These p–values
do not suggest significance at the 5% level. The r values among Hamstring strength indices 60%/s
and functional solidity all are not significant at 0.05 and 0.01 both significant level. Therefore,
suggests no significant connection and because of this cause, this can be conclude that not any
significant connection possibly will be defined among Hamstring strength indices 60%/s and
functional solidity.
10. Consider the relationship reported for the Quadriceps strength index 120°/s and the Hop index (r
= 0.744**, p = 0.000). What do these r and p values indicate related to statistical significance and
clinical importance?
ANSWER: These r and p values specify a stout constructive statistical significance, as the r value is
nearby to 1.0, and the p value is 0.0 < 0.05. Clinically this displays that as Quadriceps strength index
120°/s increases in the same manner the Hop index. It is very vital to instruct patients regarding the
significance of strength teaching and workout. The r value

Soil Pollution Involving The Accumulation Of Excess Heavy...
Soil pollution involving the accumulation of excess heavy metals is toxic to humans and other
mammalian life.1 The effect on animals can ac–cumulate in the food chains and instigate public
health concerns in the future. Normally, the exposure due to food chain transfer is chronic, however,
there are rare acute cases where direct ingestion of such pollutants is poisonous.2 Given the
importance of the situation, the determination of toxic heavy metals in the environment is essential.
The primary source of soil pollution can be at–tributed to the history of industrial/commercial
activi–ties in certain areas.4 We have chosen to analyze the soil at Northwestern University to
highlight human factors and contributions to this pollution. Given the history of the Northwestern,
there are many areas of the campus that differ in properties such as the age of buildings, the
proximity to bodies of water, areas of construction, and high traffic. For use in our study, the campus
was divided into areas A, B, C, D, E, & F (Figure 1). Since Northwestern has been regularly
undergoing construction in the past century, we pre–dicted that the areas with older buildings would
have different metal concentrations when compared with areas with more recent architecture. Due to
the use of lead–based paint in old construction, we expect that there should be a higher
concentration of metals such as lead found near older buildings such as University Hall or Locy Hall
in area E in comparison to area F with

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Organized Retail
It can be summarized that 34% of the total population whose salary ranges between Rs 10000 – Rs
25000 preferred to purchase from organized retail and 71.7% of the total population between the
same groups preferred unorganized retail that is to say the middle class still like to prefer
unorganized retail for their purchase. At the same time we can have another figure from organized
retail that 16.4% of the total population whose salary ranges between Rs 50000 – Rs 100000
preferred organized retail for their shop where as only 1.8% of the total population whose salary
ranges between Rs 50000 – Rs 100000 preferred unorganized retail for their shop. So we can say

We can see that most of the respondent whose qualification were graduation prefer amount of
money spent. The derived result reflects from organized retail the reflected Phi–value of 0.610 and p
value of 0.00, so we can say there is association between the education level and amount of money
spent and if we see the unorganized retail store the reflected Phi–value of 0.684 and p value of 0.00,
so we can say that there is no association between the education and amount of money spent. The
data collected reveals that most of the consumer prefers to purchase from organized retail out of
which most of them where from male category. High class income valued consumer prefer to choose
the organized retail for their purchase while the middle class still chose to opt unorganized retail
having the income group between 10K to 25K per month. The hypothesis testing was the prime
objective for the research that whether association exist between Income and frequency of Store

and the frequency of visit to the organized as well as unorganized retail store. Further for another
hypothesis which is association of education Vs amount spent for the retail store then we can say
that that there is association found between the education level and amount of money spent for
organized retail whereas there is no association exist between education and amount spent for

How Adequate Is Mill’s Conception of Happiness? How Good...
How adequate is Mill's conception of happiness? How good are his arguments to show that "higher"
pleasures are intrinsically more desirable than "lower" ones? Is this distinction consistent with the
thesis that pleasure is the only thing of value?
In "Utilitarianism" Mill argues that 'higher' pleasures are intrinsically more valuable than 'lower'
pleasures, citing the invariable preference of men who have access to both available (pp.140). I am
inclined to disagree, particularly with regards to his assertion that 'higher' pleasures have such a
"superiority of quality"(pp.139), so as to render any quantity of 'lower' pleasures "in comparison, of
small account"– this non–cardinal view of pleasure raises many discontinuities. This is ... Show

In Mill's favour is the seemingly fundamental difference between human and animal pleasures, and
'higher' and 'lower' pleasures as an extension of this. He draws our attention to this with his assertion
that we would prefer to be a "human being unsatisfied than a pig satisfied" (pp.140). This seems
similar to earlier comparisons, but there is an important distinction. Mill highlights that anyone who
doesn't believe there are intrinsically more desirable higher pleasures is forced to concede it would
be better to live as a beast. 'Higher' pleasures are an embodiment of our higher faculties and I
believe that our enjoyment of these is an important marker of what makes us human. Which animal
enjoys solving mathematics? Thus, as far as the distinction between human and animal pleasures,
Mill's claim seems reasonable.
Another strength of Mill's argument is his choice of words surrounding the 'lower' pleasures. We are
told of a "satisfied" pig, and a "content" fool (pp.139–140). These sound like oxymoron, but also
remind us of the much higher capacity for enjoyment of more intelligent people. A fool is easily
contented, for he can easily exhaust the pleasure sources available to him. For the intelligent man or
woman, the myriad of options available to them ensures they can never be lazily "content".
In addition, Mill's views surrounding the 'higher' pleasures cannot be

Locke And His Theory Of Determination
Here is where I must depart from Locke and his theory of determination of the will according to
pain and pleasure. I think this is a difficult notion to be comfortable with and it should be. To use the
formula of pleasure minus pain equals happiness is in direct conflict with Christian teachings and
the common good of all people. Locke, being a self–proclaimed Christian, is becoming less and less
Christian–like as this book progresses, and I agree with Chappell when she stated that he was an
egotist and a hedonist, which are inconsistent with Christianity . He discounts the husbands that
sacrifice for their wives, the wives that sacrifice for their husbands, parents that sacrifice for their
children, siblings that sacrifice for each other, neighbors that sacrifices for neighbors, the priests that
sacrifice for the church and all people, people that sacrifice for God, and we can go on and on and
on. We are all meant to work toward the good of all and serve one another, but Locke overlooks this
higher good that far surpasses pleasure and pain. Locke says that "every intelligent Bring really
seeks Happiness, which consists in the enjoyment of pleasure, without any considerable mixtures of
uneasiness" . I see two ways to read this excerpt. First is to look at the capital "B" in Being, and
interpret the intelligent Being as relating to all human beings and this is to say that all humans think
that happiness is maximized pleasure and minimized pain. And to refute this is

Key Themes In Peter Carey's 'Exotic Pleasures'
There are multiple themes that can be discussed from Peter Carey's short story, 'Exotic Pleasures.'
The story's main characters are husband and wife whose life is in a tangle before they meet their
other companion, the bird. The couple is driving in town, torn in deciding how they will use their
remaining few dollars. They even contemplate that they will take food and champagne and leave
without paying for them. However, before they do this, the bird brings in a new kind of fortune for
Lilly. Once she strokes the bird, she feels certain kind of pleasure, which she shares with her
husband and many people afterward. The bird can provide them with extra coins, but the story does
not end with them staying happily ever after. Lilly eventually confesses to Mort that she thinks that
he is angry because a tiny bird could give her the things he could not offer. They almost run into an
accident and bitterness of the argument leads them to drive to a new place, Kennecott, where they
meet more of the similar birds. The story ends in suspense as we do not know what Lilly and Mort
do with the newly found exotic pleasures. The setting of the story contributes to the outlining of the
themes in a massive way. This essay examines ways in which the setting relates to the themes of the
story. In the story, Peter Carey suggests that capitalism is out of control. This theme is supported by
different expressions of the setting in the story. The first setting we experience is a show of

be used when we conduct inferential statistical techniques. I hope that you find the powerpoints
helpful. Please read your textbook prior to viewing this powerpoint to enhance your understanding
of the discussed concepts and formulas. As with other powerpoints, I have embedded quiz question
to assist you in evaluating your understanding of the concepts. While I provide the introduction to
each powerpoint, Eric Regner, our highly regarded Production Team Manager will narrate the
powerpoint slides. Eric, thank you for your valuable contribution to the education of our social work

may hypothesize that this is one of the most difficult courses that I have taken in my academic
career". A hypothesis describes in concrete terms what you expect will happen in your study. We use
a hypothesis when we have prior knowledge from the findings in the literature, which assists you in
making a tentative statement about the relationship between variables. Studies that are exploratory
in nature and that use a quantitative approach may use a research question instead of a hypothesis.

The Test Of Patients Admitted At The Massachusetts General...
2. a) The study used a consecutive non randomized, non–probability sampling method. The study
selected records of patients admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) between
September 1997 and August 2008 in a consecutive manner until a specific number was obtained. In
this study, the number was 297. The study excluded 62 records that did not fit the sampling
requirements. The final sample was n = 235 (Salinas et al., 2012). When using consecutive sampling
techniques, the researcher includes all patients who agree to participate, provided that they meet
specific pre–established criteria. The researcher will stop the selection process when the desired
sample is achieved. This sampling technique is similar to the convenience sampling technique
except, that it aims to represent the whole cohort of the population (Fain, 2013). It is considered the
most reliable non–probability sampling technique. This sampling method is more credible and
possesses a higher validity level than any other non–probability sampling method. It also decreases
the possibility of researcher's bias. However, this sampling technique faces the same issue of all the
non–probability sampling techniques as the possibility of bias is always present (Fain, 2013).
Another drawback of the consecutive sampling technique lies within the possibility that the response
rate and the type of individuals responding may influence the findings. The responding individuals
may have life circumstances or personal

The Zone
The other day I had a conversation with a young employee and there was deep, resounding meaning
and purpose in our time together. This one will stick with me for a while. It's why I do what I do. It's
why I support people to make them better.
You see, clinically speaking this young man was interested in self harm. You and I would commonly
say he was suicidal. He was hurting, and tired, and confused. He was serious and he was strangely
complacent. Our time together was tense and focused, and the memory lingers with clarity.
I didn't solve any problems that afternoon. Didn't make promises or take away his pain. I am a
support when he didn't have any. I open the mind to possibilities in the future. My job is to connect
and empower. So, I did.
Despite the most serious of circumstances, a real threat to human life and utter uncertainty about the
outcome, making the connection was a deep fulfilling experience. There was not any pleasure or
fleeting gratification. I was

Old Timer
My definition of "old–timer" would be someone in their 70s.80s. So I would take the age at which
Mr. Old Timer was raising his children, which was apparently when he would have been at the age
to determine respectfulness of his own children. Let 's say 25 years old. That generation would have
had multiple children by then. If he was born in 1940, he would have been 25 years old in 1965. I
would take data from his geographic area from the years 1965 and 2010. Each group would have 20
people who were under the age of twenty years old in each of the two years. They would be

The outcome then depends on the data and information collected. While testing a hypothesis, the
researcher might commit type 1 or type 2 error because either the null hypothesis or alternative
hypothesis is rejected when it is true. Rejecting of the null hypothesis will result in type 1 error; and
alternative hypothesis in type 2 error. It is therefore important to allow room for possibility of
committing either of these errors as no study is perfect (Chang, 2011). Hypothesis I will formulate is
" How does the level of parental involvement in children 's lives affect the amount of respect given
and trouble caused in the past vs now."
To test this hypothesis, I would conduct a study of an acceptable sample size from a population that
best describes my study. I would then conduct a survey on a group of parents from a decade to two
decades ago and now; asking them questions regarding their involvement with their child and the
amount of respect given to them from their children and how much troubled they caused. After the
collection of my data and my results are recorded, a statistical test should be done to determine
whether the difference between the parental involvements from a decade to two decades ago versus
the involvement now is affecting the amount of respect given and trouble caused by their kids, and if

Benedict's Life After Ww2
During WWII, when Benedict was assigned to study the Japanese, they were not well understood.
Her job was to paint a portrait of the culture that would help the United States to understand how
their enemy acted and why they acted the way that they did. Not only that but to also better
understand how they would act to changes the United States planned to make for their government.
The Japanese were not an easy culture to understand, which made the assignment even more
difficult with Benedict not being able to observe in person. Benedict said, "The Japanese have been
described in the most fantastic series of 'but also's' ever used for any nation of the world" (Benedict,
1946:1). This is why Benedict's use of the chrysanthemum and the sword was so fitting: the

We try to conclude from the evidence what a sample group may think. For inferential statistics, we
use it to make decisions on the probability of the observed difference between the groups and if it is
dependable or just happened by chance based on the group. "...we use inferential statistics to make
inferences from our data to more general conditions; we use descriptive statistics simple to describe
what's going on in our data (socialresearchmethods.net)." An example of inferential statistics is, a
gym teacher wants to know the average amount of three point shots the students in this particular
school can make in 30 seconds, he chooses only the students on the basketball team to sample it, the
results he get would not be a representative sample simply because that does not represent a random
sample of the entire school, but the results he gets and writes from this test would be considered an
inferential statistic.
In quantitative research we are trying to answer a question or prove a hypothesis that we have. To do
this, in statistics there is a process call hypothesis testing or otherwise known as a significance test.
When doing a significance test, we must first set up our hypothesis or educated guess as to what we
think the research will prove. For our example, we are going to take a coin with both a heads side

a two–tailed test.
One–tailed test hypothesis: The mean lifespan of a dog is greater than 100 years.
Two–tailed test hypothesis: The mean salary of behavioral therapists is not $75,000.
5. What does the critical value represent?
The critical value represents the point on the scale of test statistic value in which the null hypothesis
is rejected (Salkind, 2014). The critical value is also used to calculate the margin of error (Salkind,
2014). Lastly, the critical value is determined from the alpha or significance value of the hypothesis

Preface In our data analysis we do some univariate analysis before proceeding to models. In survival
analysis it is highly recommended to look at the Kaplan–Meier curves for all the categorical
predictors. This will provide insight into the shape of the survival function for each group and give
an idea of whether or not the groups are proportional. We also consider the tests of equality across
strata to explore whether or not to include the predictor in the final model. For the categorical
variables such as marital, eservice, plusservice and totalservice we use the log–rank test of equality
across strata which is a non–parametric test. For the continuous variables such as age, address,

Corruption And Relationship In The Masetto Of Boccaccio
Boccaccio was a very famous Italian writer and poet. One of his most famous pieces was the
Decameron. Although Boccaccio was a correspondent of Petrarch, their works are very different.
Both Petrarch and Boccaccio spoke about "lovers," but in every different ways. For Petrarch, a lover
is the one who is loved, regardless of how it turns out. It is someone you have a spiritual attachment
with. On the contrary, lover for Boccaccio is someone you have a physical connection with. He
describes lover as someone to mess around with. These views of love, along with the theme of
corruption, are reoccurring in Boccaccio's writings. According to Boccaccio, all people are corrupt.
He shows this in multiple ways in The Decameron. I found the story of the Masetto of
Lamporecchio really interesting. This is the story of a man who wanted to prove himself to others.
Masetto noticed there were a group of nuns who needed a gardener and thought that he would be an
ideal man for the job. Masetto knew it would be hard to get hired for a job around nuns, so he
decided to act deaf and mute. This plan of his works perfectly and he was hired as a gardener. When
some of the younger nuns noticed that Masetto was a good–looking man, they considered having
their way with him. The nuns had only heard about the pleasures and wanted to experience for
themselves. They thought this mute gardener would be the perfect person to try these pleasurable
experiences on, because he would not be able to tell anyone

Analysis Of Rhymes : The Poetics Of Hip Hop
Analysis – Book of Rhymes "Rap is poetry" (xii). To any avid fan of the genre, it is a statement that
seems obvious. The words could easily be the musings of a listener first introduced to the art form,
not the focal point of an entire work of contemporary criticism. Yet in Book of Rhymes: The Poetics
of Hip Hop, Adam Bradley's primary focus is this very point, the recognition of traditional poetic
elements within rap music. With the global cultural and economic phenomenon that hip hop has
become, it is easy to forget that the style of music is barely thirty years old, that scholarly criticism
of it has existed for only half of that time. When viewed within this relatively new arena of
scholarship, the importance of Bradley's text is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His analysis of the opening bars to Immortal Technique's "Industrial Revolution" does a fantastic job
of showing the detail and meticulous referential material present in a pristine verse, while noting the
immense amount of cultural knowledge required to appreciate such a creation at its fullest. As
thorough and rewarding as Bradley's close reading can be, it is this sole focus that becomes
problematic in Book of Rhymes. He stays on the surface, privileging the discussion of linguistic
elements over cultural impact. He begins his wordplay chapter with an anecdote about a friend who
disapproves of the misogynistic and violent elements of the Notorious B.I.G.'s lyrics, a qualm
addressed by Bradley in a customary manner: "It's not what he's saying, it's how he's saying it" (86).
Bradley is partially correct; how he's saying it is the aesthetically appealing aspect of hip hop, the
reason millions of people around the world enjoy the music. But what he's saying is the more
compelling aspect. The environment that produced the attitudes reflected in hip hop, the source of
Biggie's misogyny and violent imagery, must be given its proper treatment in order to understand
rap music on deeper levels than the beauty and complexity of its poetic structures. This surface
treatment becomes more apparent in the second part of the text. The chapter on style largely avoids
the problem, aside from a somewhat rushed explanation on the effect

Data Analysis And Interpretation Of The Data Essay
Data Analysis and Interpretation
The objective of this chapter is to describe the procedures used in the analysis of the data and
present the main findings. It also presents the different tests performed to help choose the
appropriate model for the study. The chapter concludes by providing thorough statistical
interpretation of the findings.
The research data was analyzed using a statistical software called STATA. Before running the data
for the regression analysis, panel unit–root test was performed to see if data is stationary over time
so that it can be used in estimating the variables in question. The value of the variables in the model
throughout the research period is not constant; that means, there are some periods where there are
spikes. These periods of ups and downs in value of economic variables are called shock in economic
jargon. The notion behind testing for stationarity is to identify whether the effect of such shocks is
permanent or transitory. If the effect of such shocks is temporary, the subsequent values of the
variables will return to their long term equilibrium suggesting that the data is stable even with the
presence of shocks.
4.1. Presentation and Interpretation of research findings
Table 4.1 presents the panel unit–root test results. There are two groups of hypotheses that are
involved here. In the first four methods, the null hypothesis is: there is panel unit–root and the
alternative hypothesis is: there is no panel unit–root and the decision

The Theory Of Regression Results
DESCRPTION OF REGRESSION RESULTS
In order to empirically examine the extent to which changes in price causes changes in broiler
(chicken) consumption, time–series data was collected on 40 observations extending from 1960 to
1999 on nine explanatory variables in total. I regressed this data using an Ordinary–Least Squares
(OLS) approach. The main explanatory variable used for my analysis was the consumer price index
(CPI) for whole fresh chicken with the base years denoted as the 1982 to 1984 time period. The
econometric model for my regression analysis is listed below:
Broiler Consumption = a+β_(1 ) (CPI of broilers)+ β_2 (income)+ β_3 (population)+β_(4 ) (CPI for
beef)+β_(5 ) (PPI for corn)+ β_(6 ) (NPI for broiler feed)+β_7 (CPI)+β_8 (AP of Broilers)+β_9
(population)+β_(10 ) (exports of beef,veal and pork)+ ε
Data regarding my dependent variable was originally collected as pounds consumed per capita.
However, I multiplied the per capita broiler consumption data by 100,000 to obtain broiler
consumption in pounds per 100,000 people. In this way, I was able to obtain a larger coefficient on a

Field Study on Helping Behavior
Abstract
The aim of this field study was to examine helping behavior among passerbies in crowded and non–
crowded areas. The study was carried out in an informal manner where the actor would lie down in
the given areas, and the observers would record the amount of people who stopped to help or
enquire. Due to the concept of the study, the passerby's were the indirect participants and the
objective of the study was discreetly disclosed to each passerby who bent down to offer assistance.
Results showed that people tend to show more concern and interest in a less crowded area.
Helping behavior among strangers in crowded and non–crowded settings
The subject of prosocial behavior became increasingly popular since the 1970's and ... Show more

Gradually, people will tend to feel less and less responsible for their actions towards other
individuals–especially those whom they do not know (Levine, 2003).
Other than that, F. Stephen Bridges and Neil P. Coady (1996) carried out a study on helpfulness
using a technique called "lost letters" where 420 lost, stamped letters were "dropped" carefully and
equally in shop isles, besides public pay–phones and sidewalks across Broward County in Florida. A
total of 210 letters were dropped in the cities and the remaining 210 in smaller towns across the
county, as the aim was to find out which location had a higher return rate of letters. The envelopes
consisted of addresses of two normal addresses addressed to "B. J. Wilson" (control group) and
"Dandee Wilson" as well as three social deviant addresses which were "Prostitute Education",
"Legalized Prostitution", and "Safer Hustling". However, out of the 420 letters that were scattered
across the county, only 199 were mailed back from both the locations combined. The results took an
unexpected twist and showed that there was a larger figure of return rates from the cities in contrast
to the small towns (Bridges & Coady, p. 309).
The hypothesis is that passerby's would portray more helping attitudes and behaviors in non–
crowded areas and would appear to be less helpful in crowded settings. This is in line with the
research conducted by Lattane and Dabbs (1975), suggesting that there is a correlation between the

Descriptive Essay On The Blue Ridge Mountains
It was finally time to take off. I had anticipated this trip south for several weeks. Now the last item
was packed in the RV and we were ready to hit the road. One of the things I enjoy most is getting off
the beaten path and traveling the backroads. And, we were going to be able to do that on most of this
trip. Part of the advantages of traveling the backroads is being able to take in some fantastic views
of this country's landscape, slowing down our pace enough to enjoy all the "simple pleasures" along
the way, and specifically on this trip, enjoying that native "southern" hospitality.
No matter how many times I see them, my heart always perks up when I first see those Blue Ridge
mountains. And, it is always an inspirational sight to behold when you see that mist rising in the
Smoky Mountains. However, I am just as awe struck by the magnificent views as you wind through
the Nantahala in North Carolina. Beautiful rapids and waterfalls are throughout this National Forest
also. It is spectacular!
As we made our way further south, crossing over in to Georgia, we were greeted by droves of cars
parked along the sides of the roads. People were enjoying the simple pleasure of whitewater rafting.
However, when you are the one pulling a 35 ft RV maneuvering through those hair pin turns, trying
to avoid the cars on both sides of the road, it doesn't seem like a pleasure; at least for the moment.
Then, in the middle of dodging the cars on the side of the road, a van stopped right in front of us. No
kidding, the van stopped in the middle of the lane on a blind curve to let their little boy go to the
bathroom. However, as you can well image, there are no bathrooms! Seriously, traffic came to a
complete halt in the Chattahoochee River National Park. We had to shake our head and laugh at that
one, thankful that no one got hurt! It is at times like this you have to laugh and say, traveling the
backroads is also an adventure!
After that it was smooth sailing. We finished out the last part of our trip driving through a beautiful
little college town. The picturesque setting of "Young Harris" is what I love about traveling the
backroads. It takes longer but you gain a glimpse of small town living. And then we pulled into

Locke And His Theory Of Motivation
Here is where I first disagree with Locke and his theory of motivation of the will according to pain
and pleasure. I think this is a difficult notion to be comfortable with. To use the formula of pleasure
minus pain equals happiness is in direct conflict with Christian teachings and the common good of
all people. Locke, being a self–proclaimed Christian, is revealing himself throughout this book as
actually being non–Christian, and I agree with Chappell when she stated that he was an egotist and a
hedonist . He discounts the husbands that sacrifice for their wives, the wives that sacrifice for their
husbands, parents that sacrifice for their children, siblings that sacrifice for each other, neighbors
that sacrifices for neighbors, the priests that sacrifice for the church and all people, people that
sacrifice for God, and we can go on and on and on. We are all meant to work toward the good of all
and serve one another, but not for Locke. Locke says that "every intelligent Bring really seeks
Happiness, which consists in the enjoyment of pleasure, without any considerable mixtures of
uneasiness" . I see two was to read this excerpt. First is to take the capital "B" in Bring and interpret
the intelligent Being as relating to all human being and saying this is to say all humans think that
happiness is maximized pleasure and minimized pain. And to refute this is to point back to the list of
people who sacrifice pleasures and even life for the wellbeing of others. The

Hlt 362 Exercise 36 Essay
Exercise 36
1. The researchers found a significant difference between the two groups (control and treatment) for
change in mobility of the women with osteoarthritis (OA) over 12 weeks with the results of F(1, 22)
= 9.619, p = 0.005. Discuss each aspect of these results.
The F–value is high enough at the 5% level of significance to suggest a significant difference
between the control and treatment groups. The p–value 0.005 < 0.05 hence this suggests a
rejection of the null hypothesis, meaning that the control and treatment groups are found to be
different.
2. State the null hypothesis for the Baird and Sands (2004) study that focuses on the effect of the GI
with PMR treatment on patients' mobility level. Should the null ... Show more content on

6. Can ANOVA be used to test proposed relationships or predicted correlations between variables in
a single group? Provide a rationale for your answer.
Yes this is one of the main functions of the ANOVA –– to say whether or not there exists a
relationship or correlation between groups. Normally, if the p–value is less than the significance
level there is a difference between the groups, and if the p–value is larger than the significance level
there is no difference between the groups.
7. If a study had a result of F(2, 147) = 4.56, p = 0.003, how many groups were in the study, and
what was the sample size?
If K = number of groups in the study, and df = K – 1 then K = df+1 = 2+1 = 3. So there are 3 groups
in the study. There are N – K number of participants so N = K+147 = 3+147 = 150 participants.
8. The researchers state that the sample for their study was 28 women with a diagnosis of OA, and
that 18 were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 10 were randomly assigned to the
control group. Discuss the study strengths and/or weaknesses in this statement.
In my opinion, I would like to see a larger sample size. But I agree with the choice to put more
participants into the intervention group rather than the control group. That is because I would be
more interested in the results from the intervention group so a larger sample is appropriate, but there
is still enough in the control group to play

The Theory Used By Epicurus

 • 1. The Theory Used By Epicurus All over the world, throughout all time eras, it seems as though humans have always been asking the fundamental question, what is goodness? Perspectives vary by culture, religion and from person to person depending on countless variables. This question particularly interested the philosophers Plato and Epicurus. Although both men had fully rational, valid, and interesting takes on the idea of goodness, my argument is that Epicurus' ideology– in my opinion– is the most reasonable answer. In this essay, I will begin by explaining Epicurus' hedonistic view, I will then explain why Plato dissents, and then I will finish off by explaining why I believe Epicurus' idea is more reasonable. Hedonism– the idea that pleasure is the greatest good, was the ethical theory used by Epicurus to show us how to live a happy life. A prominent belief of his was that we needed to master our desires. To do this, we must first understand our desires and where they come from. This means being able to look at your desires, and understand those that are necessary for survival, for your happiness, and those which are not necessary at all. By doing this, Epicurus would say that you will be able to make wise decisions which will ultimately lead to a happy life. Epicurus makes the point saying that when we judge something, let 's say a car for instance, we judge it based on how it makes us feel. Does this car give you pleasure? Does it irritate you or cause you pain? If it does cause you pain, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 5. Jenny Lawson's Furiously Happy The days I was caught in the storm of depression united me with Jenny Lawson's second book that became my therapy for that period of time. It was recommended by a close friend who knew of the challenges I faced in a haze of darkness. When she recited excerpts from the book, immediately, the words changed from tangible squiggles to lived nights in distant insomnia. On days I was unable to pull myself out of bed, I would read Furiously Happy while under my covers, staring at the ceiling and dealing with the many voices that kept clawing and breaking each layer down that built a fortress of self–doubt and underwater volcanos of self–loathing. Many people do not understand these feelings that blossomed inside, and therefore bring their own selective perspectives about mental illness devaluing my human in brain experiences. Explaining to them proved to be harder. While with a friend, I mentioned my experiences with depression and anxiety medication and her response was that it was most definitely a placebo and that I should try and be more optimistic, words have often heard. This not only invalidated my lived experiences, indirectly, she was calling me a liar. This seems to be the most common opinion people hold about mental struggles, and Jenny addresses this in her book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Reproductive Behavior Analysis Discussion: Our results show that there was not a significant difference between the different tank densities and the number of antennal groomings within them. (P=0.31). There was also no indication of a statistically significant difference between the tanks when pheromones were not present and when pheromones were present (see fig.1). One aspect of our results was close to having a significant difference. There was no difference among the frequency of male antennal grooming between the three different B. dubia densities with pheromones, but the data was close to being statistically significant (p= 0.051), and we think that with more refined methods, and a better understanding of B. dubia social interactions that future data may be statistically significant. We thought that antennal activity would be the most important aspect of cockroach behavior when it came to the spread of disease and social interactions, but our data did not support our hypothesis. We made many observations, that we did not quantify, that demonstrated much more active behavior in the presence of pheromones. These behaviors, including males approaching the cotton ball with the female pheromones and the males sparring with each other, were much more common in the ... A one–way ANOVA test involved the analysis of the difference between means of three or more groups and the variance within the groups (Salkind, 2013). The research scenario is looking at the difference between three groups which are individuals who cannot to identify hypertension lifestyle factors, can identify some hypertension lifestyle factors and can identify all hypertension lifestyle factors and their willingness to engage in self– care in addition to the variance within the groups. In addition, in a one–way ANOVA there is one factor or independent variable and within the research scenario there is one factor which is identifying hypertension lifestyle factors (Salkind, 2013). Step 2: Level of significance The research scenario does not pose a high risk to the participants involved, therefore the level of significance will bet set to 0.05. A level of significance at 0.05 means that the researcher has accepted 5 cases out of 100 for committing a type I error of rejecting the null when it is true and accepting the research hypothesis (Salkind, 2013). The remaining 95 cases out of 100 a true null hypothesis is accepted (Salkind, 2013). • 13. Reflection Of Plato's View On Love By Socrates Finally, toward the end of the Symposium, Socrates speaks, giving an accurate account of love and the correct use of Eros. He opposes all of the other speakers and says that love is not all about our pleasure and sexual deviances, but to either impregnate the body and give life, or to impregnate the soul and pass on knowledge. Socrates speaks as if Eros is a love for the other person, to love someone so much that you want to enter into a bond that results in child rearing or a love for mankind that you want to share all your knowledge with them to better their soul. He continues that to be pregnant in the soul is better than to be pregnant in the body because when we are pregnant in the soul, there is more to be given to others then caring for a newborn. In this response from Socrates, it is hard to determine if he has it completely correct. I would imagine that without people being pregnant in the body, we would eventually run out of people to pass our knowledge on to. This, then, would have to be a both/and situation where each has a calling to one or the other or both, and both forms of love would then be equal. Socrates is then saying that love itself in not a god, but a messenger that is caught in between the divine realm of immortality and the earthly realm of the mortal. Love then can reach the heights of the gods bringing messages from man and returning to man with messages from god. Socrates is now showing that there is some divine link between man and the divine, and this is love. This also shines light on the fact that because each human had this link to the divine the human must in some way be part divine and part animal. Because each human can love, can reason, and has these animal instincts and desires, man must also be caught in between the divine and earthly worlds. Because we cannot physically move into that divine realm, then we must have an entity that is part of us and can move freely in between, this would be the soul. Socrates refutes all the other speeches about taking young boys as lovers for one's own gratification and love being a god that permits all thing in the name of pleasure. In conclusion, it is safe to say that, in our current era, Eros is absolutely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Wretch but for Love: Shakespeare’s Sonnet 91 Essay A Wretch but for Love: Shakespeare's Sonnet 91 Shakespeare's ninety–first sonnet continues to address the young man to whom he has been writing the procreation sonnets. The theme of this sonnet is the incomparable value of the young man's love. For Shakespeare, the pleasure of the young man's love is greater than any other pleasure. His rejection of worldly pleasures for the greater joy of love also appears to highlight a distinction Shakespeare wants to make between true wealth and poverty. In doing so, he insinuates a social criticism about the notion of what is truly valuable in this world. Shakespeare emphasizes these points through the structure of the poem, which employs repetition and chiasmus, and through diction. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is the tying, middle section between the first and third quatrains which both specifically address the things in which people glory. Shakespeare begins the quatrain by referencing the humours, saying that "every humor hath his adjunct pleasure/Wherein it finds a joy above the rest" (5–6). In other words, a person takes pleasure in things that are associated with his or her disposition. Unlike those people of high class and wealth who are able to boast in the things mentioned in the first quatrain, the speaker finds "these particulars are not [his] measure" (7). These particular things in which others glory, he does not. Instead, he "better[s]" (8), or "[does] better than, surpass[es], excel[s]" (OED), these other pleasures in one general thing which is the best. The speaker may not have all the material things of others, but he believes he has something much greater than worldly pleasures. The third and final quatrain reveals what is the one best general thing that is better than all the other pleasures: "Thy love" (9). Shakespeare then reiterates the pleasures measured in the first stanza (only omitting "skill" (10), "their body's force" (2), and "hounds" (4)). This repetition emphasizes the fact that the young man's love is greater than the worldly pleasures in which men usually glory. Because the speaker has the young man's love, he says, "of all men's pride I boast" (12). He can boast of, or glory in, all that in which men take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The results indicated a significant difference between participants who consumed the caffeinated beverage and participants who did not, with participants in the caffeinated group (M = 7.64, SD = 2.41) performing worse than participants in the non–caffeinated group (M = 9.81, SD = 3.16), t (97) = 2.14, p < .05. It tells that the t–statistic with 97 degrees of freedom was 2.14, and the corresponding p–value was less than .05, specifically around 0.035. Therefore, it is appropriate to conclude the research study was statistically significant. But what does a statistically significant result really mean? • 25. Coming Buy, Come Buy Many feel that pleasure is a way for people to express their feelings in a way that is animalistic or savage. Krista Lysack, author of Come Buy, Come Buy, has a different interpretation as to what pleasure is. She views pleasure as simply "that which exceeds the norms of usefulness," not as a greedy grab for something one desires. Pleasure is not something that really needs to be justified or explained because it possesses value within itself. Explaining why you get pleasure from specific objects or tasks is something that seems very difficult to do, other than saying that you do it because you like it. Lysack later goes on to theorize that shopping becomes less and less about what is useful, and more about what allows us to be distracted and entertained. Pleasure to her is a state of being that is anything but stagnant and instead moves around to a variety of different areas. People's interests are bound to change over a lifetime as few people at age twenty are likely to get the same joy from tasks they performed when they were five. Acting on one's pleasures would have previously been seen as excessive because it was considered extreme to move away from what the norm was. The Victorian women were one of the first to break away and form their pleasures solely on what they felt was fun. No one can really give an exact reason for why we do things that are pleasurable because pleasure is different for everyone. Lysack's final and most meaningful take on pleasure is that it ... (Masten, 2010) In this, he compared the human mind to a blank slate and theorized that all humans are born free of any knowledge and are merely the sum of their experiences. (Masten, 2010) Unfortunately, as life and our anatomy would have it these experiences tend to fade away as we get older. As these memories are the pillars of life's lessons learned, feelings of happiness, joy and love it is no doubt that we want to hold on to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every participant will be asked to read a chapter eight of Statics for Behavioral and Social Science 2nd edition by David Tanner a two days before to taking the memory test. Data Analysis: In order to analyze the data, the significance level (p–value) was set to .05. This means that there is a 5% chance of finding a difference between the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. Assuming that the null hypothesis is true, a p–value is the probability of the data falling outside of the normal bell curve of the sample data. A p–value less than or equal to the set significance level is considered statistically significant. In addition, to setting the significance level it is important to determine the number of degrees of freedom. This number shows how often the data can be free to vary. To calculate this, add up the number of samples from each group and then subtract two. In this case the degree for freedom is 50+50 – 2 =98 With a set significant level and degrees of freedom, the t–value can then be determined by using the t–table. Results: After the t–test was conducted to compare men and women's performance on a memory test after eating chocolate, the results

ANSWER: It is correct as the p–values for Hamstring strength indices 60°/s and all variables remained grander than 0.05. The p–values were 0.08, 0.06, 0.424, 0.506, and 0.802. These p–values do not suggest significance at the 5% level. The r values among Hamstring strength indices 60%/s and functional solidity all are not significant at 0.05 and 0.01 both significant level. Soil pollution involving the accumulation of excess heavy metals is toxic to humans and other mammalian life.1 The effect on animals can ac–cumulate in the food chains and instigate public health concerns in the future. Normally, the exposure due to food chain transfer is chronic, however, there are rare acute cases where direct ingestion of such pollutants is poisonous.2 Given the importance of the situation, the determination of toxic heavy metals in the environment is essential. The primary source of soil pollution can be at–tributed to the history of industrial/commercial activi–ties in certain areas.4 We have chosen to analyze the soil at Northwestern University to highlight human factors and contributions to this pollution. Given the history of the Northwestern, there are many areas of the campus that differ in properties such as the age of buildings, the proximity to bodies of water, areas of construction, and high traffic. For use in our study, the campus was divided into areas A, B, C, D, E, & F (Figure 1). Since Northwestern has been regularly undergoing construction in the past century, we pre–dicted that the areas with older buildings would have different metal concentrations when compared with areas with more recent architecture. Due to the use of lead–based paint in old construction, we expect that there should be a higher concentration of metals such as lead found near older buildings such as University Hall or Locy Hall in area E in comparison to area F with ... How good are his arguments to show that "higher" pleasures are intrinsically more desirable than "lower" ones? Is this distinction consistent with the thesis that pleasure is the only thing of value? In "Utilitarianism" Mill argues that 'higher' pleasures are intrinsically more valuable than 'lower' pleasures, citing the invariable preference of men who have access to both available (pp.140). I am inclined to disagree, particularly with regards to his assertion that 'higher' pleasures have such a "superiority of quality"(pp.139), so as to render any quantity of 'lower' pleasures "in comparison, of small account"– this non–cardinal view of pleasure raises many discontinuities. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Mill's favour is the seemingly fundamental difference between human and animal pleasures, and 'higher' and 'lower' pleasures as an extension of this. He draws our attention to this with his assertion that we would prefer to be a "human being unsatisfied than a pig satisfied" (pp.140). This seems similar to earlier comparisons, but there is an important distinction. Mill highlights that anyone who doesn't believe there are intrinsically more desirable higher pleasures is forced to concede it would be better to live as a beast. 'Higher' pleasures are an embodiment of our higher faculties and I believe that our enjoyment of these is an important marker of what makes us human. Which animal enjoys solving mathematics? Thus, as far as the distinction between human and animal pleasures, Mill's claim seems reasonable. Another strength of Mill's argument is his choice of words surrounding the 'lower' pleasures. We are told of a "satisfied" pig, and a "content" fool (pp.139–140). These sound like oxymoron, but also remind us of the much higher capacity for enjoyment of more intelligent people. A fool is easily contented, for he can easily exhaust the pleasure sources available to him. For the intelligent man or woman, the myriad of options available to them ensures they can never be lazily "content". In addition, Mill's views surrounding the 'higher' pleasures cannot be ... I think this is a difficult notion to be comfortable with and it should be. To use the formula of pleasure minus pain equals happiness is in direct conflict with Christian teachings and the common good of all people. Locke, being a self–proclaimed Christian, is becoming less and less Christian–like as this book progresses, and I agree with Chappell when she stated that he was an egotist and a hedonist, which are inconsistent with Christianity . He discounts the husbands that sacrifice for their wives, the wives that sacrifice for their husbands, parents that sacrifice for their children, siblings that sacrifice for each other, neighbors that sacrifices for neighbors, the priests that sacrifice for the church and all people, people that sacrifice for God, and we can go on and on and on. We are all meant to work toward the good of all and serve one another, but Locke overlooks this higher good that far surpasses pleasure and pain. Locke says that "every intelligent Bring really seeks Happiness, which consists in the enjoyment of pleasure, without any considerable mixtures of uneasiness" . I see two ways to read this excerpt. First is to look at the capital "B" in Being, and interpret the intelligent Being as relating to all human beings and this is to say that all humans think that happiness is maximized pleasure and minimized pain. However, before they do this, the bird brings in a new kind of fortune for Lilly. Once she strokes the bird, she feels certain kind of pleasure, which she shares with her husband and many people afterward. The bird can provide them with extra coins, but the story does not end with them staying happily ever after. Lilly eventually confesses to Mort that she thinks that he is angry because a tiny bird could give her the things he could not offer. They almost run into an accident and bitterness of the argument leads them to drive to a new place, Kennecott, where they meet more of the similar birds. The story ends in suspense as we do not know what Lilly and Mort do with the newly found exotic pleasures. The setting of the story contributes to the outlining of the themes in a massive way. This essay examines ways in which the setting relates to the themes of the story. In the story, Peter Carey suggests that capitalism is out of control. This theme is supported by different expressions of the setting in the story. The first setting we experience is a show of modernity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, we'll review very interesting concepts that you have heard before, such as estimation, hypothesis testing, and statistical significance. These are foundational concepts that will be used when we conduct inferential statistical techniques. I hope that you find the powerpoints helpful. Please read your textbook prior to viewing this powerpoint to enhance your understanding of the discussed concepts and formulas. As with other powerpoints, I have embedded quiz question to assist you in evaluating your understanding of the concepts. While I provide the introduction to each powerpoint, Eric Regner, our highly regarded Production Team Manager will narrate the powerpoint slides. For example, "You may hypothesize that this is one of the most difficult courses that I have taken in my academic career". A hypothesis describes in concrete terms what you expect will happen in your study. We use a hypothesis when we have prior knowledge from the findings in the literature, which assists you in making a tentative statement about the relationship between variables. Studies that are exploratory in nature and that use a quantitative approach may use a research question instead of a hypothesis. Slide 3: There are two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The study selected records of patients admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) between September 1997 and August 2008 in a consecutive manner until a specific number was obtained. In this study, the number was 297. The study excluded 62 records that did not fit the sampling requirements. The final sample was n = 235 (Salinas et al., 2012). When using consecutive sampling techniques, the researcher includes all patients who agree to participate, provided that they meet specific pre–established criteria. The researcher will stop the selection process when the desired sample is achieved. This sampling technique is similar to the convenience sampling technique except, that it aims to represent the whole cohort of the population (Fain, 2013). It is considered the most reliable non–probability sampling technique. This sampling method is more credible and possesses a higher validity level than any other non–probability sampling method. It also decreases the possibility of researcher's bias. However, this sampling technique faces the same issue of all the non–probability sampling techniques as the possibility of bias is always present (Fain, 2013). Another drawback of the consecutive sampling technique lies within the possibility that the response rate and the type of individuals responding may influence the findings. The responding individuals may have life circumstances or personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our time together was tense and focused, and the memory lingers with clarity. I didn't solve any problems that afternoon. Didn't make promises or take away his pain. So I would take the age at which Mr. Old Timer was raising his children, which was apparently when he would have been at the age to determine respectfulness of his own children. Let 's say 25 years old. That generation would have had multiple children by then. If he was born in 1940, he would have been 25 years old in 1965. I would take data from his geographic area from the years 1965 and 2010. Each group would have 20 people who were under the age of twenty years old in each of the two years. While testing a hypothesis, the researcher might commit type 1 or type 2 error because either the null hypothesis or alternative hypothesis is rejected when it is true. Rejecting of the null hypothesis will result in type 1 error; and alternative hypothesis in type 2 error. It is therefore important to allow room for possibility of committing either of these errors as no study is perfect (Chang, 2011). Hypothesis I will formulate is " How does the level of parental involvement in children 's lives affect the amount of respect given and trouble caused in the past vs now." To test this hypothesis, I would conduct a study of an acceptable sample size from a population that best describes my study. I would then conduct a survey on a group of parents from a decade to two decades ago and now; asking them questions regarding their involvement with their child and the amount of respect given to them from their children and how much troubled they caused. After the collection of my data and my results are recorded, a statistical test should be done to determine whether the difference between the parental involvements from a decade to two decades ago versus the involvement now is affecting the amount of respect given and trouble caused by their kids, and if is ... Not only that but to also better understand how they would act to changes the United States planned to make for their government. The Japanese were not an easy culture to understand, which made the assignment even more difficult with Benedict not being able to observe in person. Benedict said, "The Japanese have been described in the most fantastic series of 'but also's' ever used for any nation of the world" (Benedict, 1946:1). "...we use inferential statistics to make inferences from our data to more general conditions; we use descriptive statistics simple to describe what's going on in our data (socialresearchmethods.net)." An example of inferential statistics is, a gym teacher wants to know the average amount of three point shots the students in this particular school can make in 30 seconds, he chooses only the students on the basketball team to sample it, the results he get would not be a representative sample simply because that does not represent a random sample of the entire school, but the results he gets and writes from this test would be considered an inferential statistic. In quantitative research we are trying to answer a question or prove a hypothesis that we have. To do this, in statistics there is a process call hypothesis testing or otherwise known as a significance test. In survival analysis it is highly recommended to look at the Kaplan–Meier curves for all the categorical predictors. • 66. Corruption And Relationship In The Masetto Of Boccaccio Boccaccio was a very famous Italian writer and poet. One of his most famous pieces was the Decameron. Although Boccaccio was a correspondent of Petrarch, their works are very different. Both Petrarch and Boccaccio spoke about "lovers," but in every different ways. For Petrarch, a lover is the one who is loved, regardless of how it turns out. It is someone you have a spiritual attachment with. On the contrary, lover for Boccaccio is someone you have a physical connection with. He describes lover as someone to mess around with. These views of love, along with the theme of corruption, are reoccurring in Boccaccio's writings. According to Boccaccio, all people are corrupt. He shows this in multiple ways in The Decameron. I found the story of the Masetto of Lamporecchio really interesting. This is the story of a man who wanted to prove himself to others. Masetto noticed there were a group of nuns who needed a gardener and thought that he would be an ideal man for the job. Masetto knew it would be hard to get hired for a job around nuns, so he decided to act deaf and mute. This plan of his works perfectly and he was hired as a gardener. When some of the younger nuns noticed that Masetto was a good–looking man, they considered having their way with him. The words could easily be the musings of a listener first introduced to the art form, not the focal point of an entire work of contemporary criticism. Yet in Book of Rhymes: The Poetics of Hip Hop, Adam Bradley's primary focus is this very point, the recognition of traditional poetic elements within rap music. With the global cultural and economic phenomenon that hip hop has become, it is easy to forget that the style of music is barely thirty years old, that scholarly criticism of it has existed for only half of that time. When viewed within this relatively new arena of scholarship, the importance of Bradley's text is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His analysis of the opening bars to Immortal Technique's "Industrial Revolution" does a fantastic job of showing the detail and meticulous referential material present in a pristine verse, while noting the immense amount of cultural knowledge required to appreciate such a creation at its fullest. As thorough and rewarding as Bradley's close reading can be, it is this sole focus that becomes problematic in Book of Rhymes. He stays on the surface, privileging the discussion of linguistic elements over cultural impact. He begins his wordplay chapter with an anecdote about a friend who disapproves of the misogynistic and violent elements of the Notorious B.I.G.'s lyrics, a qualm addressed by Bradley in a customary manner: "It's not what he's saying, it's how he's saying it" (86). Bradley is partially correct; how he's saying it is the aesthetically appealing aspect of hip hop, the reason millions of people around the world enjoy the music. But what he's saying is the more compelling aspect. The environment that produced the attitudes reflected in hip hop, the source of Biggie's misogyny and violent imagery, must be given its proper treatment in order to understand rap music on deeper levels than the beauty and complexity of its poetic structures. This surface treatment becomes more apparent in the second part of the text. The chapter on style largely avoids the problem, aside from a somewhat rushed explanation on the effect ... • 70. Data Analysis And Interpretation Of The Data Essay Data Analysis and Interpretation The objective of this chapter is to describe the procedures used in the analysis of the data and present the main findings. It also presents the different tests performed to help choose the appropriate model for the study. The chapter concludes by providing thorough statistical interpretation of the findings. The research data was analyzed using a statistical software called STATA. Before running the data for the regression analysis, panel unit–root test was performed to see if data is stationary over time so that it can be used in estimating the variables in question. The value of the variables in the model throughout the research period is not constant; that means, there are some periods where there are spikes. These periods of ups and downs in value of economic variables are called shock in economic jargon. The notion behind testing for stationarity is to identify whether the effect of such shocks is permanent or transitory. If the effect of such shocks is temporary, the subsequent values of the variables will return to their long term equilibrium suggesting that the data is stable even with the presence of shocks. 4.1. Presentation and Interpretation of research findings Table 4.1 presents the panel unit–root test results. There are two groups of hypotheses that are involved here. The Theory Of Regression Results DESCRPTION OF REGRESSION RESULTS In order to empirically examine the extent to which changes in price causes changes in broiler (chicken) consumption, time–series data was collected on 40 observations extending from 1960 to 1999 on nine explanatory variables in total. I regressed this data using an Ordinary–Least Squares (OLS) approach. The main explanatory variable used for my analysis was the consumer price index (CPI) for whole fresh chicken with the base years denoted as the 1982 to 1984 time period. The econometric model for my regression analysis is listed below: Broiler Consumption = a+β_(1 ) (CPI of broilers)+ β_2 (income)+ β_3 (population)+β_(4 ) (CPI for beef)+β_(5 ) (PPI for corn)+ β_(6 ) (NPI for broiler feed)+β_7 (CPI)+β_8 (AP of Broilers)+β_9 (population)+β_(10 ) (exports of beef, veal and pork)+ ε Data regarding my dependent variable was originally collected as pounds consumed per capita. However, I multiplied the per capita broiler consumption data by 100,000 to obtain broiler consumption in pounds per 100,000 people. In this way, I was able to obtain a larger coefficient on a few of the variables, which allowed for a more suitable display and discussion of the results in the paper. Further, the objective of this analysis was to explain to what extent price of broilers (CPI on whole fresh chicken) impacts broiler consumption in pounds. Due to the concept of the study, the passerby's were the indirect participants and the objective of the study was discreetly disclosed to each passerby who bent down to offer assistance. Stephen Bridges and Neil P. A total of 210 letters were dropped in the cities and the remaining 210 in smaller towns across the county, as the aim was to find out which location had a higher return rate of letters. The envelopes consisted of addresses of two normal addresses addressed to "B. J. However, out of the 420 letters that were scattered across the county, only 199 were mailed back from both the locations combined. The results took an unexpected twist and showed that there was a larger figure of return rates from the cities in contrast to the small towns (Bridges & Coady, p. 309). • 76. Descriptive Essay On The Blue Ridge Mountains It was finally time to take off. I had anticipated this trip south for several weeks. Now the last item was packed in the RV and we were ready to hit the road. One of the things I enjoy most is getting off the beaten path and traveling the backroads. And, we were going to be able to do that on most of this trip. Part of the advantages of traveling the backroads is being able to take in some fantastic views of this country's landscape, slowing down our pace enough to enjoy all the "simple pleasures" along the way, and specifically on this trip, enjoying that native "southern" hospitality. No matter how many times I see them, my heart always perks up when I first see those Blue Ridge mountains. And, it is always an inspirational sight to behold when you see that mist rising in the Smoky Mountains. However, I am just as awe struck by the magnificent views as you wind through the Nantahala in North Carolina. Beautiful rapids and waterfalls are throughout this National Forest also. It is spectacular! As we made our way further south, crossing over in to Georgia, we were greeted by droves of cars parked along the sides of the roads. People were enjoying the simple pleasure of whitewater rafting. However, when you are the one pulling a 35 ft RV maneuvering through those hair pin turns, trying to avoid the cars on both sides of the road, it doesn't seem like a pleasure; at least for the moment. Seriously, traffic came to a complete halt in the Chattahoochee River National Park. We had to shake our head and laugh at that one, thankful that no one got hurt! It is at times like this you have to laugh and say, traveling the backroads is also an adventure! After that it was smooth sailing. I think this is a difficult notion to be comfortable with. To use the formula of pleasure minus pain equals happiness is in direct conflict with Christian teachings and the common good of all people. Locke, being a self–proclaimed Christian, is revealing himself throughout this book as actually being non–Christian, and I agree with Chappell when she stated that he was an egotist and a hedonist . We are all meant to work toward the good of all and serve one another, but not for Locke. Locke says that "every intelligent Bring really seeks Happiness, which consists in the enjoyment of pleasure, without any considerable mixtures of uneasiness" . I see two was to read this excerpt. First is to take the capital "B" in Bring and interpret the intelligent Being as relating to all human being and saying this is to say all humans think that happiness is maximized pleasure and minimized pain. So there are 3 groups in the study. There are N – K number of participants so N = K+147 = 3+147 = 150 participants. 8. The researchers state that the sample for their study was 28 women with a diagnosis of OA, and that 18 were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 10 were randomly assigned to the control group. Discuss the study strengths and/or weaknesses in this statement. In my opinion, I would like to see a larger sample size. But I agree with the choice to put more participants into the intervention group rather than the control group. That is because I would be more interested in the results from the intervention group so a larger sample is appropriate, but there is still enough in the control group to play
