Project 2016
Project for Highway Design
(UBGMRW-20-M)
Academic Year 2015
Project – Designing a road section
Scenario
Government of Sri Lanka has shown a keen interest in improving the road network of Sri
Lanka, with the funds being available through various funding sources. With respect to a
mega scale project, some of the selected roads also needed to be rehabilitated.
PQR company, in which you are currently working as a design engineer, has been
awarded one of the phases of the rehabilitation project to develop a total of 7km long road
sections, around Mattakkuliya area.
The roads that are being awarded to your company has been indicated in the Figure 1.
Figure 1: Map with the selected roads (In blue colour) (Source: https://www.google.com/earth)
3. UBGMRW-20-M
Project 2016
The chief design engineer has approached you yesterday and asked you and your team
to design and detail part of the project. He has specifically asked you to identify the most
critical 1km section from the given roads and focus on the design of that particular road
section, so that he can allocate the rest of the road sections to other engineers.
Problem Statement
The roads that are to be rehabilitated are currently considered as accident black and the
condition of most of the roads are also poor.
You are supposed to design and detail the road including geometric design, capacity
design and pavement design. Further the estimated cost for the rehabilitation work is
required to be found out and proper solutions should be recommended for the identified
issues.
You may use Highway Capacity Manual 2000, Road Note 31 and AASHTO design
guidelines.
Learning Outcomes
This coursework is designed to assess whether you have achieved the following
1. Identify the principle of highway location and factors influencing highway design
2. Identify the improvements needed in existing roads and propose improvements
3. Follow appropriate design standards to develop suitable designs
4. Demonstrate critical understanding of the design principles in highway engineering
5. Designthe road section according to recognized international standards and effectively
communicate in the form of technical drawings
4. UBGMRW-20-M
Project 2016
Tasks
1. Choose the most critical 1km section of the road out of the total 7km section with proper
reasoning
2. Identify the existing condition of the selected road section including traffic demand,
geometry of the road, drainage structures and road safety issues
3. Detail designs for the rehabilitation work of the selected 1km section
Geometric design
Capacity Design
Pavement design
Detailed drawings
4. Prepare a discussion on the highway materials to be used
5. Compile the final report including the solutions recommended for the issues being
identified

Submission format and Assessment Criteria
Individual reports on the individual contribution to the project should be submitted
before the deadline. Presentation will be based on your component but the question
and answer session will be based on other group members’ contributions as well.
Format requirements
Report:
Main body font Arial 11 point
Line spacing 1.5pt
Margins 2.1cm all round
Pages to be numbered lower right hand corner in footer (10pointArial).
Section headings Arial11point, bold, uppercase and Arial11 point, bold, lower case for
subheadings. If sub-subheadings are required use the same convention but reduceto10
point.
All graphs, figures and tables must be numbered and have a full caption. Table captions
are placed at the top of the table while graphs and other figures should have their
captions below
Clearly laid out title page.
Tables and lists may be used to illustrate aspects but must be accompanied by
explanatory text. You are encouraged to use diagrams and photographs but these
must be incorporated into the document, titled and annotated to clearly identify the
relevant content. Diagrams may be hand drawn and scanned in.
