Online Printing Australia
1. The Era of Book Printing – Is The End Nigh?
With thousands and thousands of e-books getting downloaded every day and different kinds
of e-readers flooding the markets, have you ever wondered if Book Printing is a dying art
and is going to become a thing of past in a not-so-distant future? According to the Pew
Internet and American Life Project, 21% of Americans have read an e-book in 2011. It was
also found that Americans like e-books more than print books and they only prefer print
books to be read with children or shared with friends. However, the debate is still on and
people are still trying to judge which is better.
A study by Research Unit Media Convergence of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU)
in cooperation with MVB Marketing- und Verlagsservice des Buchhandels GmbH, operator of
the ebook platform Libreka, found out that there is no difference in reading from a printed
book and reading from an electronic device such as an e-reader. There are no disadvantages
of reading from electronic reading devices compared to reading printed texts. The study was
conducted by asking participants with different levels of understanding to read a variety of
texts from an Amazon Kindle 3, Apple iPad and from printed books. Using an EEG machine
and eye tracking tools, their reading behaviour and their brain activity were observed and
examined. After the study, it was concluded, that reading from an electronic reading device
has no negative effects.
“There is no (reading) culture clash – whether it is analog or digital, reading remains the
most important cultural technology,” said Professor Dr. Stephan Füssel, chair of the
Gutenberg-Institute of Book Studies and spokesperson for the Media Convergence Research
Unit at JGU.
However, one set of people still believe that it is easy to read from printed books than to
read on electronic devices. So the question still haunts us, which are better – e-books or
printed books?
On an environmental level, we found the e-books are better as it puts an end to the falling of
millions and millions of trees in the pursuit of production of paper for Digital Printing For
ages, trees have been cut in order to produce paper that goes into making not just printed
books but even your daily newspaper. With the advent of e-readers and tablet PCs, it is not
only the e-books, but you can also check the news in various formats like – RSS feeds, e-
paper or paper.li where news is presented to you as and when they happen.
