  • 1. Vol 19 Number 5 SELAMAT PAGI 7 August 2010 From the Editor President’s Message What is your question? New Members for the New Rotary Year A friend once asked Isidor I Rabi, a August in our Rotary calendar is Membership Month. We do look forward to Nobel Price winner in physics, how increasing our membership as there is work to be done across the avenues of he became a scientist. Rabi replied service and also the RCBKS Education Fund. The more hands we have the that ever day after school his mother better. would talk to him about his school day. She was n’t so much interested What are the unique selling points of the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise? in what he had learned that day, but Our club is unique in that we are very informal by comparison to most in our she always inquired, ‘ Did you ask a district. Our dress code at meetings is presentable for a weekend. We prefer GOOD question today?’ ‘ Asking to do without the jacket and tie after a week at work. Yet as part of a good questions,’ Rabi said, ‘made respectable international organization we maintain an appropriate me become a scientist.’ presentation that allows us to knock on and open any door in the name of Rotary. Good questions help to seek good answers that will lead to good actions While some may think that the time of our meeting is unearthly, we are and hence good results. You may usually done by 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. This leaves the weekend free for the say good questions will lead to good family or other hobbies and is decidedly an advantage. If we think like the results. So our President Poay Lim shoe salesman in a land where no one wears shoes, the opportunities are asked his Board of Directors good immense! questions too. And so we asked ourselves many questions too But I believe the best part of the club is our all-inclusive culture. There are no especially pertaining to the future of cliques of any kind. We are proud to be known as the club with the highest our REF Education Fund Program . proportion of female members in the district. We have apart from Malaysians, Meetings will be held to search for members from (in alphabetical order) Australia, Britain, Korea, New Zealand, answers and action plans. We seek Pakistan, Sweden and Switzerland. So we are probably also the most members involvement and ownership cosmopolitan club in the district! as REF Chairman Yoke Leong continues to help answer many of the We are fortunate to have the very energetic James Cheong as our questions that will take the Program Membership director. With his hard work and the tireless efforts of our to the next level. members, notably PP Kong, in bringing guests to attend club meetings, we look forward to our first signing this Rotary year. In life there is no difference as we too ask and continue to ask many Having recruited members we hope that they would enjoy the Rotary questions to create a better future as experience. One way is for our members to undertake a role that is well as Happiness for all. But if no significant to them and also suited to their interest. That is the surest way for questions are asked , then likely it is members to buy into the club and feel truly a part of the club in spirit. I urge either the dead end of subject matter those who see a role that they would like to fulfill to come forward and or lack of thinking . We may ask volunteer for it. occasionally too many questions or While the board of directors is important to any Rotary Club, the success of illogical ones that upset others. So our club ultimately depends on members being enthusiastic about what we we must be mindful of asking the believe in and what we do. So let us put our collective shoulders to the Rotary right questions at the right time. wheel to maintain the momentum we have gathered in the past year. August will see many clubs bring in It is an August time for new members! new members and also give life to new committees to seek changes. Yours in Rotary .... continue on next page Poay Lim

  • 4. Around the Board of Directors 2010/11 Rotary World President Tan Poay Lim Do you wear your Rotary pin everyday? 77277127(O) Rotarians have been extolling the virtues of wearing a Rotary President Elect pin on RI’s official LinkedIn group. Pins come in many Steve Robinson designs, including this one from vendor Russell-Hampton. +66818336310 (BK) Luanne Triolo was several weeks into a challenge to wear her Rotary pin for Immediate Past President 60 days straight when she realized she had missed a day. So the 2009-10 Frances Po president of the Rotary Club of Carol Stream, Illinois, USA, started all over 21731618(O) again to meet the challenge William Ferreira, governor of District 6440, had set before all his club presidents.“You get used to it. It’s something that is Vice President really good to do,” says Triolo. “Different pins do catch people’s eye in Alvin Tan different ways.” 77275822(O) Many Rotarians are serious about wearing their Rotary pins. Eugene Beil, past governor of District 6950 (Florida, USA) and a member of the Rotary Honorary Secretary Club of Hudson, tapped into that dedication recently when he started a Ghaurry discussion thread on RI’s official LinkedIn group, asking Rotarians whether 23003757(O) they wear their pins every day or just for meetings. The discussion has prompted more than 190 comments. Honorary Treasurer PP Sunny Khoo “I am happy with the feedback,” Beil says. “I feel strongly about the value of 22849089(O) wearing the pin every day. Whether you are at the grocery store, at work, or anywhere, you never know when a stranger is going to notice and you have Club Administration an opportunity to explain Rotary to them.” PP Karen Chong 012-2893380 Tony Quinn, governor of District 1200 (England), notes on the LinkedIn thread that Rotarians agree to wear their pins at all times when they are Service Projects inducted. PP Graham Bennett 012-2918619 “Remember what Past RI President Bob Barth had to say,” Quinn notes. “He said that a Rotary pin should say this about the wearer: ‘You can rely The Rotary Foundation on me, I am dependable, I am reliable, I give more than I take, and I am PP Jeremy Ng available.’ I can’t think of a better reason to wear it at all time.” 012-2186660 Membership Development District 3300 Sister Clubs James Cheong 78803333(O) District Governor K B Lim RC Bugis Junction [D 3310] 03-21630292(O) Saturday, 08:00 am New Generation limakbmy@gmail.com Hotel Inter-Continental Ghaurry 80 Middle Road, Singapore 23003757(O) Assistant Governor Mani Raja 03-79805529(0) 03-79813514(Fax) RC ChiangmaiThinthaingam[D 3360] REF Chairman Thursday, 12.00 noon PP Dr Yee Yoke Leong International Center 22824602(O) Rotary Clubs in Group 7 Chiangmai University, Thailand Bandar Sunway Bernam Valley Bulletin Committee Bukit Kiara Sunrise RC Chungli Chung Shing [D 3500] Thursday, 12.00 noon Kong (Editor) Karen (Production) Danau Desa No 4, Ln 10, Gwo-Ti Street Abdul/Kong (Speakers Programme) Petaling Jaya Chungli, Taiwan
