Because lost is an action verb, there may be a
direct object. Cleopatra lost what? Cleopatra
lost kingdom. Kingdom is the direct object.
Indirect object
(I.O.)
A noun (not in the possessive case)
that precedes the direct object and
tells to whom or for whom, or to what
or for what the action of the verb is
done. The I.O. receives the direct
object.
Dad bought our car (I.O.) a
new battery (D.O.).
Dad bought what? A battery. Battery is the
D.O. Dad bought the battery for what? He
bought the battery for the car. Car is the
indirect object.

A prepositional phrase consists of a
preposition, its noun object, and any
modifiers. A prep. Phrase may have a
compound object.

Inside is the preposition, and corral is the

(A.P.)
An appositive follows a noun and
explains or identifies that noun.
Berlin, Germany’s largest city,
was once divided by a wall.
City is an appositive that identifies the noun
Berlin.
Nouns of Direct
Address
(D.A.)
The name of a person to whom a
sentence is directed. It is always set
off by commas.
Don’t sit down, Cooper, until
the ladies are seated.
The sentence is directed at Cooper. Cooper is
the noun of direct address (D.A.)
