Joy Luck Club Sociology
Intro:
When most American think of immigration, we consider the Mexican and Hispanic populations. Yet,
Chinese Americans make up a vast population of individuals who make the United States home each
year. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tran brings to light the struggles of
Chinese American women who came to the country as first generation immigrants. The reason I
chose this movie is because it was my mother's favorite movie and it deals with many sociological
issues.
Summary:
The Joy Luck Club centers around eight individual women who are all of Chinese decent. Four of
the women are mothers and the latter four are each individual woman's child. The mothers are

Critique:
I personally enjoyed the movie. I feel that the onscreen adaptation did do some justice to the novel.
The intertwinement of American and Chinese culture is not a common theme in writing therefore is
was a nice detour from the norm. The stories are prevalent and reign true to many cultures today.
The books starts off with stories and experiences of China. Each woman is detailed with her story
and she does not appear biased when mentioning her downfall. I do think that the stories of the
interaction between mother and daughter could have been used more in the screen adaptation.
Conclusion:
This movie exploits many different avenues of sexism and the struggle of being a woman and
transitioning to a new country. It is a warm story which gives hope to anyone having doubt about
moving to a new place. I recommend this movie without reservation to anyone wanting to get
insight on Chinese American women. The movie does not hold punches concerning the inferior roles
of women but it shows that anyone can overcome adversities. The two theories most prevalent were
the structural functional theory and the symbolic interaction theory. Both are thoroughly

Who Is Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen?
ovie Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa by was very informative it gave me a sense of what Japan and
its people were going through and how World War two affected it. Before the bomb was dropped a
good majority of the people were going hungry because of the lack of the provisions handed out. It
got so bad that in the movie two men fought over a small portion of rice. To me that was very
surprising and somewhat frightening because if the people found out about the food that the
government saved for the army, I can only imagine what would happen. Another thing that shocked
me was after the bomb was dropped many who survived would die once getting a sip of water.It is
because of the mass amounts of death and humanity turning on each other that I believe that this
movie should be viewed by 8th graders and above. It is at 8th grade that I believe students are

So it was surprising to see in the movie that the Japanese were struggling just to get basic
necessities, so they were able to support their families. To me this movie gives insight on what
might become of US and Japan relationship after war world two, from the US dropping the atomic

Libby Streeton– Irrational thinking is common in a nuclear war, right? Why did I expect Fin and
Max would change their minds? I begged them through a river of tears to stay with me. But that was
not enough. I can't adjust to reality, watching their lanky bodies fade in the distance keeps reminding
me of the fate of their lives. Max is only 12, too young to witness violent and unforgiving deaths of
innocent citizens. What happens if I never see them again? I assumed I was doing right but
apparently, what I think is right is wrong. I am only just beginning to realise what has just happened.
They are gone. My two young boys are gone forever. I have hugged them for the final time. They
risked their lives to find me. But I couldn't do the same. I'm stuck in a half broken down office
building in the middle of a deserted city and I can't leave because too many people rely on me to
stay here and help. Inhale. Exhale. I keep thinking about what my life is like now, and right now I
feel it is hopeless. I am isolated, sitting in a patrolled corner of an office, trying to deal with this
absolute shit of a situation. I'm a failure of a mother to let my children out of my sight and endanger

Growing up my grandfather would always say, "Boy, you can't find any wisdom, if you don't
experience life." Of course, part of his reasoning for say this was to get me to leave him alone;
however, there is a great deal of truth to his statement. Just like with John Dewey claiming,
"Through experience man learns about the world...." Dewey continues to claim, "...that students
should be involved in real life tasks..." Through these tasks, students can build experience and thus
develop the wisdom to serve them later in life. These experiences and the wisdom that follows are
vital in making a better tomorrow. As an adult student, I am in full agreement with Dewey's
perspective on the matter. Because through experiences I have found, comes understanding and this
understanding helps to shape the decisions that I have made later in life. Additionally, my
experience has shown that when studying real–world problems and work–related tasks, as a student,
I become more motivated to absorb as much information as I can, and I become better prepared to
succeed in my professional career. Indeed, anyone who has ever studied history can testify that if we
as a society do not learn from our mistakes than we will be destined to repeat them. These lessons
directly relate to the experiences in Dewey's philosophy. Moreover, the most singular form of this
society is the individual, thus acquiring wisdom through experiences is essential to not repeating
past mistakes. While I believe wholeheartedly in Dewey's philosophy towards education, a few
additions would help students to become better rounded as they enter society. One of the most
important additions is to immerse students at all levels in various cultures outside of their average
demographic. Allowing pupils to become cross–cultural students will help bring change to society,
and to the world. Likewise, being opening these avenues to students to explore it will help open a
dialogue with the students to discuss among their peers, ultimately, allowing the student to create

in their mind. An example is when Samantha is just starting to decipher what is going on in the day
she relives her death. "I had the craziest feeling that it had all happened before, down to the smell of

The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an account of Elie's experiences in the camps. Many Stories have
come out of this period of time; stories of loss, death, as well as ones of survival and human
kindness. In Night, Elie's is a story of survival. "Confront them with annihilation, and they will then
survive; plunge them into a deadly situation, and they will then live. When people fall into danger,
they are then able to strive for victory." (Tzu). Survival is made up of the culmination of many

In Art Spiegelman's Maus I and II, symbolism such as the Swastika sign and the animals shown
throughout the book is targeted to show hatred for the jews. In both sets of books, I think the way
the arthur sets up the characters symbolize race and religion. At the top of the food chain there is
german soldiers who are referred to as cats. These cats supported Hitler's idea toward the jewish
people, they believed and thought jews were to blame for everything going wrong in the world at the
time of the holocaust. They rule the jewish people in camps and P.O.W camps. The cats would work,

Immigration and Sacrifice by Adhi Appakutty is an article about how Appakutty realized what his
parent's immigration truly meant. "Indian culture is inherently unique; simply put it is quite different

One of the sacrifices Appakutty's mom made was leaving her family and friends (technically her
family). She lived with her mother, sisters, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and in–laws in a modest
home. It's extremely difficult to just leave your closest relatives and friends and move half–way
across the world making other great, difficult sacrifices. This differentiates from the novel because
all the moms left behind their lives in China after they lost the people dearest to them. (An–Mei

After watching the move How To Let Go and Love All The Things Climate Can't Change, my
perception of our world completely changed. With the overwhelming facts to the heartfelt stories
Josh Fox exposes viewers to the damage that is yet to come. This movie was so effective as opposed
to other climate documentaries because Fox explains the human aspects of climate change.
Traveling to twelve countries on six continents he explains how ocean warming, sea level rise, and
air quality are already negatively affecting people in their everyday lives. People don't connect with
facts, people connect with people. This is something I am realizing is critical in getting others on
board with sustainability initiatives and to re think the role we play as consumers. After graduating I
want to work as a sustainability director for a large company. At the start of my sustainability
journey I am discovering that the most essential part of a sustainability director's job is to be
personable. People will be more likely to implement change when they realize how it benefits or
affects them and their organization. Without effective communication, projects will never be funded,
ideas will not be considered, and it is less likely that your impact will be as substantial as it could.
As a sustainability advocate, it will be my job to promote and implement initiatives that will help us
now, but also generations to come will feel those effects. Josh Fox shows it is the grassroot groups
and people stepping up to protect our planet because they know it is necessary. I have developed the
mindset, if not me than who? Out of all ten of the things that climate can't change, I believe that the
most important one is resilience. As sustainability professionals, it is a fact of life that you will be
told no. But the key is moving on from that. You can not get yourself worked up just because things
didn't play out how we want. We can also not let getting told no beat us down, not everyone
understands or wants to understand the environmental catastrophes that are upon us. With this in

Yet, Chinese Americans make up a vast population of individuals who make the United States home each year. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tran brings to light the struggles of Chinese American women who came to the country as first generation immigrants. The reason I chose this movie is because it was my mother's favorite movie and it deals with many sociological issues. Summary: The Joy Luck Club centers around eight individual women who are all of Chinese decent. Four of the women are mothers and the latter four are each individual woman's child. I feel that the onscreen adaptation did do some justice to the novel. The intertwinement of American and Chinese culture is not a common theme in writing therefore is was a nice detour from the norm. Each woman is detailed with her story and she does not appear biased when mentioning her downfall.
