2. William Shakespeare
• He was an English poet, playwright, and actor
who was born on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-
Avon.
• Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at the age
of 18. She was eight years older than him. They
had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet
and Judith.
• Athe age of 49, he retired to Stratford , where he
died three years later. He died on 23 April 1616,
at the age of 52.
• Shakespeare produced most of his known work
between 1589 and 1613.. He then wrote mainly
tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet,
Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered
some of the finest works in the English language.
3. Romeo and Juliet
• Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy
written by William Shakespeare
early in his career about two young
star-crossed lovers whose deaths
ultimately reconcile their feuding
families.
• It was among Shakespeare's most
popular plays during his lifetime
and, along with Hamlet, is one of
his most frequently performed
plays.
• Romeo and Juliet belongs to a
tradition of tragic romances.
4. Characters
• Romeo -. A young man of about sixteen who is handsome,
intelligent, and sensitive. He secretly marries Juliet, the
daughter of his father’s worst enemy.
• Juliet - A beautiful thirteen-year-old girl, Juliet begins the
play as a child who has thought little about love and
marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with
Romeo, the son of her family’s great enemy.
• Friar Lawrence - A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo
and Juliet.
• Mercutio - A kinsman to the Prince, and Romeo’s close
friend. He can be quite hotheaded, and hates people who
are affected, pretentious, or obsessed with the latest
fashions.
• The Nurse - Juliet’s nurse, the woman who breast-fed
Juliet when she was a baby and has cared for Juliet her
entire life. The Nurse believes in love and wants Juliet to
have a nice-looking husband.
5. Plot
• Romeo and Juliet fall in love but they
come from families which hate each other.
Nevertheless, they marry in secret instead.
• Juliet's parents told her she must marry
Paris. Her parents do not know she is
already married. She plans to fake her
death and escape to be with Romeo
forever.
• Frair Laurence designs the plan. He gives
Juliet a sleeping potion. She appears to be
dead. However, Romeo does not know
about the plan, so he thinks that she is
dead, and kills himself. When Juliet wakes
up, she discovers that Romeo is dead and
then kills herself.
