2. Introduction
• Tobacco is an agricultural product processed from the fresh
leaves of plants in the genus nicotiana . Tobacco leaves are
rolled into cigars, shredded for use in cigarettes, processed for
chewing and grounded to use as snuff powder.
• Although nobody knows for sure when the tobacco plant was
first cultivated, but its believed that Native Americans were the
first to use tobacco leaves for smoking. It did not come to the
notice of rest of the world until Columbus's voyage of 1492

3. Cultivation of tobacco
• The seeds of the tobacco are planted in nurseries and tended
till the young plants are strong enough to be transplanted into
the open fields. When they are about 6-8 inches high, they are
transplanted carefully into fully fertilized and well-drained
soil.
• The plant growth is monitored and pruned at regular intervals.
This results in bigger and juicier leaves.

4. Cultivation of tobacco
• Harvesting: Tobacco is harvested in two ways. In the oldest
method, the entire plant is cropped off the stalk at the ground
with a sickle. In the other method, individual leaves are pulled
off from the plant as and when they gets riped.
• Curing: Curing is the process of drying the leaves. This
process improves flavor and aroma of tobacco leaves. There
are four common methods of curing.

7. Manufacturing of Cigarette
• Cigarettes are composed of three Components paper, tobacco blend, and a
butt that constitute tissue tube. Focus is on creation of each of these
components.
• Paper: the paper for holding the tobacco blend may vary in porosity to
control the burning rate of the cigarette and to stabilize the produced ash.
The paper used in tipping the cigarette and the surrounded filter stabilize
mouthpiece from saliva and moderate the delivery of smoke with the
presence of one or two rows of small laser-drilled air holes.

8. • Tobacco blend : the tobacco grown in different parts of a
country is carefully blended to produce a well-balanced
tobacco blend, which can be filled into cigarette wrappers.
The tobacco blend is mainly made from the leaves of flue-
cured bright leaf, burley tobacco, and oriental tobacco.
• Butt: the common name for the residual part of the cigarette
is ‘cigarette butt’ or simple ‘butt’ the butt consists of a tissue
tube which holds a filter. The Filter in the butt helps to
collect impurities and to make it less harsh to inhale.

11. • TYPES
• Fillers : A filler forms the inner part of the cigar and makes
most of the cigar. It constitutes 85 percent of the cigar. Filler of
various strengths are usually mixed well to produce desired
cigar flavors. In the cigar industry. This is known as ‘blend’.
• Binder: Binders are the elastic leaves that hold the filler
tobacco together and constitute 10 percent of the cigar. The
filler with binder is known as bunch. Binder leaves are used
form the part of the plant usually, as they have high tensile
strength.

12. • Wrappers: A wrapper is the outer layer of the cigar. It dictates
appearance of the cigar. It constitutes 5 percent of the cigar. A
whole leaf of finest quality is chosen as wrappers. Wrapper
leaves are fermented separately from other leaves to ensure
that it is smooth, not too oily and has a subtle bouquet. Good
Wrapper leaves have to be smooth and elastic and must have
no protruding veins.
• The wrapper should have a good aroma since it is the most
vital ingredient in the taste of the cigar.

13. OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS
• Snuff: Snuff is a generic term for fine- groun
d smokeless tobacco product. Originally the term refers only to
dry snuff, a fine tan dust popular mainly in the 18th century.
• Creamy Snuff: Creamy snuff or mishri is a tobacco paste,
consisting of tobacco, clove oil, glycerine, spearmint, menthol
and camphor. It is sold in a tube like toothpaste. It is marketed
in India under the brand of Ipco, Denobac, Tona, and Ganesh.
