This document summarizes a presentation on building with straw. It discusses the history of straw construction from early examples in Nebraska in the 1900s to modern projects. Benefits of straw building highlighted are its good insulation properties, low embodied energy, ability to store carbon, and sustainability. Examples of different straw construction methods are provided, including infill walls, prefabricated panels, and load-bearing straw. The presentation promotes straw construction and announces opportunities to get involved in natural building education programs.

10. It is a non-ending material
has a low energy content
can isnsulate well (heat and noise)
has a reasonable thermal mass
can give a healthy building
Is in dry form very stable
provides storage of large amounts of CO2
is good recyclable / compostable
There are few materials that score better
on all these points.

66. STRAW & STRAW
Thermal conductivity is
determined by the main
direction of the straw itself,
not by the density.
67. STRAW & STRAW
A wall of straw can be is as
thick as a standard wall with
the same thermal quality.
(Rc = 7)
68. STRAW & STRAW
With a 10mm plaster layer
the straw wall gives you fire
resistance of 90 min.
Modcel did successful tests
with their straw module
reaching over 2 hours of fire
resistance.
69. STRO & STRO

Editor's Notes
Introductie S4S
Welcome everybody to the first lecture of this year in a series of lectures and workshops about natural building methods. We find students with some experience with natural materials and we wanted to share knowledge about building with natural materials.
