Michael Thonet founded the company in 1819 in Boppard on the Rhine in Germany. From the beginning, the cabinet maker
oriented his work towards innovative, high-quality products. Michael Thonet produced his own designs with the new method of
bending wood that he had developed: the wood was heated with steam and then bent into the desired form. Over the course of
time, a global distribution network was established; in 1859 Michael Thonet celebrated his industrial breakthrough with chair
no. 14, the famous Vienna Coffee House Chair.

With over 50 million copies sold (by 1930), chair no. 14 – today’s 214 – is considered the most-built chair in the world, leaving aside
the countless counterfeit products. It is often called “the chair of all chairs” and is the epitome of modern industrial production.

Bauhaus
One of the most important periods in the history of modernism in architecture and design is without a doubt the Bauhaus. Walter
Gropius called for a uniting of art and technology at this innovative training institution established in 1919. After having moved to
Dessau in 1926, experiments with the innovative tubular steel material were made at this school by, among others, Bauhaus teachers
such as Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam. These experiments were connected with the emerging movement of the New Building, which
aimed to offer modern people new architecture and new institutions. Thonet’s commitment since the end of the 1920s provided the
tubular steel concept with its big impact and made it increasingly popular.
History
Numerous innovations followed Michael Thonet’s era. In the 1930s, the programme range was expanded with tubular steel furniture
by famous designers including Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Only the tensile properties of the material from which it is made, cold-bent tubular steel, enables the flexible cantilever effect. The
comfort is owed to the flexibility of the tubular steel, which makes sophisticated padding unnecessary. The combination of tubular
steel with wicker, wood, leather, fabric or mesh results in the creation of furniture with a timeless, lightweight design, which is in
also highly flexible and variable in its use.

Museum Thonet
Michael Thonet‘s lifetime achievements impressively reflect the transition from handcraft to industrial mass production in the
19th century. However, the success of Thonet‘s production process was not only based on perfecting the bending of solid wood;
it was the entrepreneurial vision of master joiner Michael Thonet that guaranteed the continual development of products and
production techniques over the years. The best proof of his extraordinary abilities is the bentwood furniture, which has been in
continuous production in Frankenberg following the originals by Michael Thonet. The Museum Thonet started out on a very small
scale. Many pieces were acquired or exchanged on site since the factory has been producing furniture in Frankenberg since 1889.

We strive for a balance between profitable growth, protection of the environment, and responsible actions towards all share-
holder groups. We base our actions on an integral view and sustainability combined with social responsibility. Our products are
durable and do not harm the environment, neither in their production nor their recycling. New products are added to our portfolio
only after a careful examination of the recyclability of the used materials, the share of machining and environmental friend-
liness, and the sustainability of the materials being used. As of 2015 we obtain 100% of our electricity from environmentally
sustainable energy sources. In addition, by investing in recycling systems for solvents we also make one more contribution to the
reduction of our environmental footprint.
Sustainability
Sustainability
ISO 9001:2008
Green Globe is an internationally recognised standard and evaluates sustainable behaviour in a company. There is no
comparable certification system because Green Globe not only evaluates sustainability with regard to environmental friend-
liness but also considers the economic and social aspects in a company. The organisation’s key statement is to enable ho-
listic and sustainable management on the basis of far-reaching approaches regarding business management, the environ-
ment, and social responsibility both locally and internationally, adherence to legislation and regulations, and consideration
of cultural heritage. Companies have to meet clearly defined requirements in order to receive a Green Globe certificate. For
these criteria to remain dynamic and reflect any changes on an international level, they are reassessed and adapted on an
annual basis.
In the furniture industry, Thonet is the only company that not only meets these standards but exceeds and implements
them and has received the “Certificate for sustainable and environmentally friendly management”.

Pure Materials - Bentwood Classics
If traces of use are welcome on the surface of a piece of furniture and, in addition, represent a special quality characteristic, we
are speaking of a chair from our “Pure Materials” series. Natural wood, striking, grained leather and an especially careful hand-
ling of the materials characterise this fine and especially sustainable product line, which already includes selected tubular steel
icons from the Bauhaus era. Now, we’re expanding the “Pure Materials” collection with our famous bentwood classics 209, 210,
214, 215 and 233. We offer these versions in ash wood and the vegetable tanned leather “Olive Galicia”. Over the course of time
and with use, a natural patina develops, providing each piece of furniture with a unique look, making each piece unmistakable.
A favorite jacket, leather tote, or a much-used piece of furniture… We love the objects in our environment that adjust to inten-
sive use and upon which we leave our traces. They are personal and unmistakable – simply unique. This is one idea behind the
term „Pure Materials.“ The intention is for signs of use to become visible and provide each piece of furniture with an unmistak-
able identity.

At imm cologne 2014, Thonet combines past and future in the here and now – with classics and innovations that are presented
with frames lacquered in colors: red, white, black, chocolate brown, warm gray, gray-green and mustard yellow are the colors,
in which the Mart Stam classic S 43, the lounge chair S 411, the Pure Materials versions of Marcel Breuer’s chairs S 32 and
S 43, the side table series B 9 and B 97 as well as the new desk S 1200 will be available. Managing Director Thorsten Muck
explains the idea behind the “Classics in Colour” concept: “Our classics – headed by the tubular steel furniture from the
Bauhaus era – deserve continuous care and variation. We currently do justice to this claim with the introduction of the
contemporary colors.”

We have compiled various materials for your personal outdoor model. You can choose from 12 different colours for the seat and backrest, which consist of
resilient mesh. Three different armrests made of Iroko, elastomer and mesh round off the model’s overall appearance. The frame gets its final colour highlight
with our “ThonetProtect®” coating, which is available in our seven “Classics in Colour” tubular steel hues. This special surface makes our frames robust and
durable under all weather conditions.
The special “ThonetProtect®” surface equips the frames
of our “Thonet All Seasons” collection for any outdoor use.
This sophisticated coating is tested in compliance with
the salt spray test DIN EN ISO 9227-NSS (720 hours). This
testing method refers to the strict criteria of the auto-
mobile industry and simulates a multiple of a life cycle in
regular use. With “ThonetProtect®”, the frames become
extremely robust and UV-resistant against any weather
influences. They will look good for a long time even on ter-
races in a harsh coastal environment! What’s even better:
deep scratches that may damage the coloured surface do
not cause the coating to lose its protective effect.

Bentwood meets tubular steel in this classic among the barstools: the legs of the stool are produced from beech wood in the
traditional bending process while a tubular steel ring lends additional stability to the stool and serves as a footrest for grea-
ter seating comfort. The round seat is available as a smooth moulded seat or in an upholstered version. The robust wood and
resistant cover fabric make the 204 an everyday solid and sociable companion, whether at home or in restaurants.

This elegant bentwood classic is a masterpiece in its construction and production: the projecting frame that forms both the
backrest and armrest is bent into its form from a single piece of solid beech wood. Like the original model of all bentwood
chairs, no. 214, chair no. 209 also consists of only six parts. Due to its aesthetic reduction in combination with the organic form,
it almost looks like a sculpture. Swiss architect Le Corbusier was fascinated with it and used it in many of his buildings, for
example the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart in 1927. He confirmed that „... this chair has nobility.“ It is produced in our
Frankenberg facility.

The famous coffee house chair is an icon and considered the most successful mass produced product in the world to date: it
initiated the history of modern furniture. The basis was a new technique – the bending of solid wood – that Michael Thonet
developed and perfected during the 1850s, and it was the first time serial furniture production was possible. Added was an in-
genious distribution model: 36 disassembled chairs could be packed into a one cubic metre box, shipped throughout the world,
and then assembled on site. With its clear, reduced aesthetics this classic has been placed in the most diverse environments for
more than 150 years. It is produced in our Frankenberg facility.

First manufactured in 1876, model no. 18 with the striking “hairpin” in its backrest returns to the Thonet portfolio with clear and
reduced aesthetics as 218. Along with the chairs no. 14 and no. 56, chair no. 18 was one of the bestselling models of the Thonet
production. The so-called export chair of Gebrüder Thonet was often sold for use in restaurants and cafés – especially in South
America. Disassembled into its individual parts, 36 chairs fit into a sea chest, allowing the chairs to be sent on long journeys
without any problem and in large quantities. Now, the 218 – formerly no. 18 – is once again being produced in Frankenberg.
Known to all and very familiar, this bentwood classic reveals its uniqueness at second glance: the armrests are harmonically
integrated into the extended backrest; two curved bentwood elements connect the armrests with the seat. They provide stability
and, at the same time, a certain flexibility that makes sitting on this chair very comfortable. Therefore, it was used in numerous
restaurants and cafés throughout the world around 1900. We produce the original in the well-proven Thonet quality.

These designs are probably the most famous and most-produced tubular steel classics. Their most important property is the
sophisticated constructive form and ingenious aesthetic combination of tubular steel, wood, and cane work. The design goes
back to Breuer‘s productive years in Berlin from 1928 until 1931 during which, after leaving the Bauhaus, he worked as an in-
dependent architect and interior designer and realised a number of grand interiors and designed numerous pieces of furniture.
Thonet has been producing these models since 1930. Due to the aesthetic reduction and clarity, they are suitable for many uses:
conference rooms, waiting areas, restaurants, and homes.

These chairs are the first cantilever chairs in furniture history. They were used for the first time in 1927 in the Weissenhof-Sied-
lung in Stuttgart. Starting in 1925, Mart Stam experimented with gas pipes that he connected with flanges and developed the
principle of cantilevering chairs that no longer rest on four legs. He thus created a construction principle that became an im-
portant building block in the history of modern furniture design with its formal reservation. In the beginning, Stam was not yet
focused on the flexing effect of the bent tubular steel; rather, he was interested in the clear form, which perfectly fit in with the
modern buildings of the time.

This comfortable club chair was presented in 1930 at the Paris Grand Palais as a contribution by the Deutscher Werkbund. To-
gether with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer organized this premiere of contemporary German furniture producti-
on in France. With the S 35 he succeeded in integrating all of the functions of a tubular steel cantilever chair with the construc-
tion of a single uninterrupted line. The cantilever effect was thus doubled because the armrests, which flex independently from
the seat, balance the swinging of the seat and backrest frame that projects towards the back. A matching footstool is available.

In all of his furniture designs Mart Stam relied on straightforward forms, an aesthetic economy of means in the construction and
the benefit of improved sitting comfort. In the case of S 43 he combined the tubular steel frame with moulded plywood shells for
seat and back and thus created an absolute reduction. Due to the comfortable flexing effect of the frame, upholstery is unneces-
sary. Its clear, reserved form makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism. Today, Thonet owns the
artistic copyright for this strictly cubic chair without back legs.

The outstanding properties of this armchair are elegance, timelessness and exceptional sitting comfort. Added is a lightness
that only a cantilever model can have. While the first tubular steel chairs from the 1920s were rarely upholstered, the 1935
Thonet catalog presented an entire series of voluminously upholstered armchairs and sofas. The in house Thonet design S 411
from the year 1932 probably marks the beginning of this new product series. Today, it is produced with high-quality upholstery.

The targeted restriction in the use of materials, elegance in the lines and transparency in the effect are the characteristic
properties of the S 533. It owes its special comfort to constant elastic flexing. This effect results from the fact that Mies van
der Rohe conceived the front part of the tubular steel frame as a big bow made of spring-hard tubular steel. While most of the
designs from the 1920s were rather simple and functional, this chair clearly communicates the signature of the architect: his
design combines functionality and comfort with timeless aesthetics. The chair was first presented in the Weissenhof-Siedlung
in 1927.

During his time at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer experimented with steel and tubular steel by logically transferring the principles
of the use of materials corresponding to their properties for furniture making from woodworking to this new material. Being in
the vicinity of the Junkers facility in Dessau was an enormous advantage for this process. The nesting tables B 9, various shel-
ves and side furniture were among his first designs. The Thonet catalog from 1930/31 included the complete range. B 9 nesting
tables were used in the cafeteria of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus building in Dessau. Today, these elegant tables find their place in
residential or contract environments.

Elegant, flexible and suitable for a variety of uses. In its dimensions, the table set B 97 is reminiscent of Marcel Breuer’s nes-
ting table B 9. Its altered construction, however, offers a practical advantage: due to the opening on one side, the tables can be
pulled over the edge of a sofa, armchair or bed. Otherwise, they can be conveniently pushed into one another. The Thonet design
from 1933 is among the classics of tubular steel furniture.

This tubular steel desk is a successful example of the Bauhaus‘ programmatic claim of combining art and technology into a
formal unit. The tabletop and storage elements made of varnished or stained wood harmonically fit in with the tubular steel
design. The supporting frame consists of a single line; the wooden elements seem to float in it. The simple piece of furniture,
which is formally balanced in its proportions, represents an expressive piece of contemporary history known as „The New
Objectivity.“ We produce various versions of this model.

It‘s a feast for the eyes: the 107 chair is particularly suited for use in restaurants and cafés, thanks to an excellent combinati-
on of elegance, stability and lightness. With its simple form, it also lends itself perfectly for use as a dining table chair in the
home. With the 107 chair, designer Robert Stadler continues Thonet‘s successful café and bistro furniture tradition. This wooden
chair with its elegant form and comfortable feel is almost completely machine-produced, easy to clean and sturdy. Fulfilling
both a constructional and aesthetic function, the offset backrest is a particularly striking feature.

Calm, harmonic, with subtle details - the chair program complements the tables 1130. Naoto Fukasawa used the most typical
Thonet material for his design: solid wood. The result is a program that seems to have fallen out of time with its archetypal-uni-
versal form and construction: a simple wooden chair with an ergonomically shaped seat resting on its frame and a comfortable

The Barcelona design trio Lievore Altherr Molina has designed a chair and table programme for Thonet‘s living and dining
segment. The chair 190 and table 1190 are characterised by conic wooden chair and table legs that taper towards the top and
provide the classic concept with a dynamic lightness. A young and informal appearance thus becomes the programme‘s hall-
mark. The armrests of the chair refer to the shape of the legs, which open at an angle and thus homogeneously comply with
the design. A harmonious impression is the result of the chair legs‘ rounded shape - the back legs are integrated in the closed
backrest.

Stefan Diez has designed a wooden chair programme that relates to our bentwood heritage but transformed it by aesthetical
and technological criteria. Bent chair legs and armrests merge in a „knot“ and are embedded from underneath in the ergonomi-
cally shaped seat. With a suspenseful contrast between the elegantly curved wooden elements and the striking upholstery the
program communicates and also offers comfort: it does not prescribe a specific seating position, and the organically shaped
backrest is comfortably flexing.

An elegant, practical all-rounder. The design by James Irvine sensitively combines the tradition of Thonet with contemporary
sensibilities. In this case, metal is the dominant material. The elegantly curved bent tubular steel loop beneath the seat serves
as a foot support. The seats are round or oval. The frame rests on a round base plate. The sitting height can be steplessly adjus-
ted with the aid of a gas pressure spring, and the foot support is adjusted to the ideal distance for the user at the same time.
All of these considerations form the basis for a multi-functional product suitable for contract and private environments.

With the programme range 808, Munich based design studio Formstelle has created a lounge chair that combines maximum
comfort with numerous possibilities for individualisation. The new lounge chair 808 plays with the contrast between a protective
shell and an inviting openness, creating a place of retreat and calm. Its distinctive appearance is created through a contempo-
rary reinterpretation of the classic wing chair – the shape suggests an elegant cocoon that embraces the person sitting in the
chair and communicates a feeling of security. Another striking characteristic is the comfortable upholstery with its welcoming
soft wave effect. This inner cushioned core establishes an intriguing contrast with the angularity of the outer shell. A clever
mechanism allows users to individually adjust the position of the chair, while a footstool enhances the programme.

An upholstery concept that Formstelle has exclusively developed for the lounge chair 808 completes this highly detailed and
well-conceived design. The designers have created a distinct fabric for the lounge chair 808 in collaboration with the German
textile manufacture Rohi: “Soul” is available in thirteen colours and impresses with a high-quality new woollen yarn and a mul-
tidimensional honeycomb structure that lends depth to the fabric. Customers can choose from six different colour worlds, each

Graphic contours meet upholstered cosiness: the solid wood frame of the armchair 860 is characterised by the recurring theme
of the triangle in the individual wooden elements. The extremely comfortable seat and backrest upholstery forms a suspenseful
contrast with these striking, dynamic contours. Another characteristic of this comfortable armchair, which is also suited for
lounge areas in the contract business, is its individualisation flexibility. The wooden elements of the matching stool refer to the
design of the armchair’s frame.
The comfortable two-seater bench 862 F, the two different side tables 1861 and 1860, and the rocking chair 866 F, which assu-
res relaxation and deceleration, complete the programme range into a cosy lounge round.

serve as filigree servants and storage. The small table 1861 impresses with its visual lightness, fragile construction, compact
size and attractive material combination. The finely processed frame made of solid wood forms the graphic basis of the table.
The compact size and low weight enable good and easy handling. The large table 1860 picks up the basic design form of the
triangle in its legs and playfully establishes the formal relation with the product family 860. The round form of the table effort-
lessly fits in with any space and leaves room for diversified arrangements. Several chairs and benches can be grouped around it,
and it also harmoniously works along with its smaller sibling 1861. Thin black metal rods are integrated in the solid base frame,
emphasizing the lightweight look of the table while reinterpreting its classic form in a modern way.
The bentwood sofa recites our origins in a contemporary way. The sofa with a high recognition value is based on an airy ben-
twood frame that wraps around a down-to-the-floor lush seat cushion. Its loose backrest cushions and side cushions, which can
be purchased separately, can be individually combined. The flexible positioning of the cushions allows views of the filigree woo-
den frame – lending the sofa an especially lightweight look, which is also attractive seen from the back. Thanks to its reduced
form and high seating comfort, the bentwood sofa is not only suited for private use but also serves as a social meeting point in
modern office landscapes.

Programme range S 650 reawakens the 1950s in the here and now – the reinterpretation of a classic piece of lounge furniture.
The sofa’s backrest seems to be leaning against the tubular steel frame, creating a lightweight look. With programme range S
650 we offer a spacious and variable seating solution for waiting and reception areas. The single and two-seater have suffi-
ciently large seats, offering the people sitting in them a comfortable sense of privacy. The low backrest enables a communicati-
ve posture of the person sitting. An optional table, which connects two armchair elements, provides a surface for placing things.
Filigree armrests – also integrated upon request – elegantly enclose the seating furniture without adding unnecessary weight.
Programme range S 650 is suited for the contract and residential segments.

Flowing yet edgy: with programme range S 830 we have developed a club chair that fits into the most diverse environments due to its versatility. The inter-
action of curved and straight lines makes it both feminine and masculine – it is precisely these contrasts that provide suspense and elegance to the chair.
The comfortable, fully upholstered chair invites you to stay in it with its open formal language, and it is especially flexible: the various versions enable it to
be used in the most diverse environments – living, waiting and reception areas or lounges. The visual separation of inside and outside upholstery also allows
for a high degree of individualisation; depending on taste and preferences, various fabrics and leathers can be combined.

Armchair, daybed, chaise lounge or sofa - a wide range of variations characterize program S 5000. James Irvine has reinterpre-
ted a type of sofa that was already a part of the Thonet program in the 1930s: the archetype of a minimalist sofa with a bent
tubular steel base. A variable program resulted through subtle interventions, based on a simple, intelligent design idea: the
„modular principle.“ Up to four identical upholstery elements are placed on the standard base element as armrests or backrests
at the owner‘s discretion. This idea opens up a broad range of uses and large selection of different versions.

Elegant, simple, and modular: shelf system 7000 has a basic grid of 140, 120 or 80 cm width, 10, 20, 30 or 40 cm height, and
is 40 cm deep. It can be assembled without tools and extended or changed in its dimensions with additional elements. Various
surfaces offer a broad spectrum of uses from the living to the contract segment. The contrast between the 4 cm thick shelves
and the clear, reduced metal support structure is aesthetically attractive.

CANOR
Thonet Design Team: Julia Homrighausen
Sound insulation, room divider, bulletin board and storage – CANOR unites many functions. Thanks to numerous individualisa-
tion options the acoustic partition adjusts to a wide range of requirements and environments. CANOR, Latin for noise or sound,
reduces noises due to the special upholstery and textile cover and enables undisturbed and concentrated working. In open-plan
offices or co-working spaces, as a divider between private living and working areas or as a bulletin board for conference rooms
and in the home office: the acoustic partition is the homely solution for various requirements in day-to-day work life and offers
plenty of added value. Both sides of the upholstery can be used as a bulletin board, making the piece a silent helper in mee-
tings. Due to the weight, CANOR can be easily moved and guarantees high flexibility. Thanks to the generously large shelf, the
furniture offers storage for folders, documents or decorations.
All acoustically effective materials from the Thonet portfolio can be used for covering the surfaces. The wooden frame is availa-
ble in different versions – beech, ash or oak, all stained and/or lacquered.

Playing with perception: The side table 1025 by James Van Vossel represents solid elegance and minimalistic essence: three
wooden legs placed in regular 120-degree intervals describe an imaginary circle on the floor. On the surface of the tabletop they
appear as perfectly lined-up flush circles. The different grain pattern of the three table legs, which taper towards the bottom, cre-
ates an additional graphic effect contrasting with the tabletop. In addition to its function as a side table, this new model convin-
ces with its high-precision production quality – sophisticated technology meets masterful craftsmanship – and with its distinctly
sculptural look.
The side table 1025 with a height of 48 cm and diameter of 45 cm is available in ash, oak and walnut.

Jorre van Ast
With model 1060, Dutch designer Jorre van Ast has created a solid wooden table with a graphic formal language characte-
rised by subtle details. The graceful rectangular tabletop with rounded corners and bevelled edge rests on a frame of two
V-shaped pairs of legs that are cleverly connected by a traverse. The legs and traverse are made of solid bentwood and thus
refer to the company’s bentwood tradition. Its filigree appearance and the soft, organically flowing lines of the individual
wooden elements give the table a lightweight and contemporary look and make it an inviting meeting place in private dining
rooms and cosy conferencing environments. With table 1060, designer Jorre van Ast managed to design a modern piece of
furniture that unifies the three themes living, working and Thonet heritage.

In various versions and with optional accessories the graceful desk S 1200 becomes a personalized piece of furniture and makes
working an experience. The Thonet Design Team was inspired by the company’s collection of classical tubular steel furniture for
this design. The decisive advantage of the S 1200 is its compact dimensions due to which it can be integrated in the smallest
living space. A well-conceived tubular steel frame forms the basis of the S 1200; its slanted design makes getting up easy even
in the narrowest of hallways and niches. A footrest assures a comfortable seating position. Optional accessories made of flocked
metal help keep things on and in the desk properly organized: S 1211 pencil box, S 1212 filing box DIN A4, S 1213 multi-functio-
nal bookrest, S 1214 cable management.

KUULA
Uli Budde
Thonet’s vision for the world of living room furniture is beautifully enhanced with the curvaceous Kuula globe light. In cooperati-
on with lamp manufacturer Oligo, Thonet presents a product that draws the eye with its elegant, minimalist design. The spheri-
cal, hand blown glass luminaire, perfectly balanced on a sleek aluminium base, is reminiscent of the kind of lamps that tradi-
tionally grace Nordic windowsills, while at the same time it honours the timeless essence of Bauhaus design. The KUULA table
lamp is equipped with cutting-edge technology: the energy-efficient LED with its remarkable output of 1,000 lumens creates an
appealing warm-white light in any room. The subtle, dimmable light switch, which is a design element in itself, allows for easy
adjustment of the lamp and its lighting levels, depending on task or mood.
KUULA means “globe” or “sphere” in Finnish, hence the distinctive hallmark of the lamp: the minimalist glass globe. It seems
to float above the base, and its light can be adjusted to individual requirements thanks to a dimmer. The addition of a specially
calculated and conceived lens assures that the light is directed to the opalescent section of the globe, guaranteeing effective,
glare-free illumination. The opalescent, sand-blasted part of the glass globe is also invisibly coated to prevent fingerprints.

Thanks to the use of the newest LED technology the LUM luminaire guarantees a bright and brilliant colour rendition. Formally,
the luminaire is reduced to a minimum; it is elegant and usable in many ways. The product offers plenty of sophisticated tech-
nology: high luminous efficacy, extremely low power consumption and a warm light for reading. It can be switched on and off via
a touch sensor, it can be dimmed and it memorises the last setting (memory function). In addition, it has a sleep timer (the light
automatically switches off after 4 hours) and a nightlight which wraps only the frame in gentle light. By turning the vertical
light bracket, the direction of the light can be variably changed up to 340°.

Garden chairs that match the classic S 43 by Mart Stam in their construction and design: clear and reserved in their form, with
ideal sitting comfort and high quality with respect to materials and processing. Under the model name B 33 g (g = garden) the-
se chairs were first presented in the 1935 Thonet catalog. Today, the wooden strips are made of solid Iroko, an African wood with
a high density and weather resistance (FSC seal). It is similar to teak in appearance and has a smooth, even surface. All wooden
parts are oiled for protection. The table S 1040 matches these chairs.

Reserved elegance combined with high seating comfort. With the S 60 Glen Oliver Löw succeeded in reinterpreting the cantilever
chair and developing a contemporary solution. The seat shell made of moulded wood is connected with the tubular steel frame
via the armrests. Milled openings assure a comfortable sitting climate and visually structure the backrest. The armrests, cover-
ed with a soft plastic material, taper towards the back and are connected to the seat shell. The diameter of the tubular steel is
reduced to a minimum, providing this comfortable chair with an elegant, lightweight and clear appearance. Thanks to a revision
of the upholstery programme range S 60 now offers even more seating comfort.

The flowing ergonomic form and succinctly elaborated details lend visual lightness and cool elegance to the chair S 95. The
clear lines and attractive material combinations signalise sportiness. All elements of the chair positively form a cohesive unity.
The most striking element of the S 95 is the open backrest as the centre of the design. The upholstery and aluminium swivel
cross base reveal references to current automobile design. the inlays in the four-leg cross base are special eye catchers: inserts
made of different materials add that special element to the chair and visually connect it with the new table programme A 1700
Evolution in which the appropriate inlays can be integrated in the table legs as well. The chair’s metal parts – especially the
aluminium connectors between the seat and backrest and the four-leg cross base – have the appeal of bent flat steel, remini-
scent of the traditional craft. All of the upholstered parts have a dynamic shape and, despite their filigree structure, guarantee a
high level of comfort. Due to the various versions, the S 95 covers a wide spectrum of uses. As a cantilever chair it offers relaxed
sitting and relief especially during long meetings.

comprehensive range S 160 for event rooms and cafeterias – is available with two, three or four seats and can be optio-
nally equipped with a laminate or stained beech tabletop. The beam seating can be individually configured like the chairs
in this programme range: the complete shell programme of range S 160 is available in plastic or wood with various
upholstery options.
A perfect addition: The S 180 series can be perfectly combined with S 160 and S 170 series since all three designs share the
same seat shell. The whole product family is ideally suited for use in public and commercial event spaces. The S 180 series is
characterised by a sled base that lends the chair a dynamic and distinctive look. The S 160, S 170 and S 180 chairs guarantee
time-efficient and safe assembly in large halls, lecture theatres and churches. The chairs‘ slim shape allows closely arranged

tionally special. The frames are connected without any extra parts. This system offers two economical advantages: the comfor-

he S 1195 is a folding table that does not give away this practical characteristic at first glance. It has clear, reserved aesthetics
and high quality materials and processing. It is mainly used in the training and seminar sector, where its special features best
come into play: the large amount of leg room due to the table legs being positioned at the ends of the tabletop, the easy as-
sembly and disassembly, and the space-saving storage since the tables can be perfectly stacked with minimum space required
when folded up. Matching carts with a push bracket are available for transport.

  • 2. Michael Thonet founded the company in 1819 in Boppard on the Rhine in Germany. From the beginning, the cabinet maker oriented his work towards innovative, high-quality products. Michael Thonet produced his own designs with the new method of bending wood that he had developed: the wood was heated with steam and then bent into the desired form. Over the course of time, a global distribution network was established; in 1859 Michael Thonet celebrated his industrial breakthrough with chair no. 14, the famous Vienna Coffee House Chair. History

  • 18. Ludwig Mies van der RoheMarcel Breuer Mart Stam Bauhaus One of the most important periods in the history of modernism in architecture and design is without a doubt the Bauhaus. Walter Gropius called for a uniting of art and technology at this innovative training institution established in 1919. After having moved to Dessau in 1926, experiments with the innovative tubular steel material were made at this school by, among others, Bauhaus teachers such as Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam. These experiments were connected with the emerging movement of the New Building, which aimed to offer modern people new architecture and new institutions. Thonet’s commitment since the end of the 1920s provided the tubular steel concept with its big impact and made it increasingly popular. History
  • 19. Numerous innovations followed Michael Thonet’s era. In the 1930s, the programme range was expanded with tubular steel furniture by famous designers including Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Only the tensile properties of the material from which it is made, cold-bent tubular steel, enables the flexible cantilever effect. The comfort is owed to the flexibility of the tubular steel, which makes sophisticated padding unnecessary. The combination of tubular steel with wicker, wood, leather, fabric or mesh results in the creation of furniture with a timeless, lightweight design, which is in also highly flexible and variable in its use. • 30. Museum Thonet Michael Thonet‘s lifetime achievements impressively reflect the transition from handcraft to industrial mass production in the 19th century. However, the success of Thonet‘s production process was not only based on perfecting the bending of solid wood; it was the entrepreneurial vision of master joiner Michael Thonet that guaranteed the continual development of products and production techniques over the years. The best proof of his extraordinary abilities is the bentwood furniture, which has been in continuous production in Frankenberg following the originals by Michael Thonet. The Museum Thonet started out on a very small scale. Many pieces were acquired or exchanged on site since the factory has been producing furniture in Frankenberg since 1889.

  • 33. We strive for a balance between profitable growth, protection of the environment, and responsible actions towards all share- holder groups. We base our actions on an integral view and sustainability combined with social responsibility. Our products are durable and do not harm the environment, neither in their production nor their recycling. New products are added to our portfolio only after a careful examination of the recyclability of the used materials, the share of machining and environmental friend- liness, and the sustainability of the materials being used. As of 2015 we obtain 100% of our electricity from environmentally sustainable energy sources. In addition, by investing in recycling systems for solvents we also make one more contribution to the reduction of our environmental footprint. Sustainability
  • 34. Sustainability ISO 9001:2008 Green Globe is an internationally recognised standard and evaluates sustainable behaviour in a company. There is no comparable certification system because Green Globe not only evaluates sustainability with regard to environmental friend- liness but also considers the economic and social aspects in a company. The organisation’s key statement is to enable ho- listic and sustainable management on the basis of far-reaching approaches regarding business management, the environ- ment, and social responsibility both locally and internationally, adherence to legislation and regulations, and consideration of cultural heritage. Companies have to meet clearly defined requirements in order to receive a Green Globe certificate. For these criteria to remain dynamic and reflect any changes on an international level, they are reassessed and adapted on an annual basis. In the furniture industry, Thonet is the only company that not only meets these standards but exceeds and implements them and has received the “Certificate for sustainable and environmentally friendly management”.
  • 36. Pure Materials - Bentwood Classics If traces of use are welcome on the surface of a piece of furniture and, in addition, represent a special quality characteristic, we are speaking of a chair from our “Pure Materials” series. Natural wood, striking, grained leather and an especially careful hand- ling of the materials characterise this fine and especially sustainable product line, which already includes selected tubular steel icons from the Bauhaus era. Now, we’re expanding the “Pure Materials” collection with our famous bentwood classics 209, 210, 214, 215 and 233. We offer these versions in ash wood and the vegetable tanned leather “Olive Galicia”. Over the course of time and with use, a natural patina develops, providing each piece of furniture with a unique look, making each piece unmistakable.
  • 37. A favorite jacket, leather tote, or a much-used piece of furniture… We love the objects in our environment that adjust to inten- sive use and upon which we leave our traces. They are personal and unmistakable – simply unique. This is one idea behind the term „Pure Materials.“ The intention is for signs of use to become visible and provide each piece of furniture with an unmistak- able identity. You can choose from 12 different colours for the seat and backrest, which consist of resilient mesh. Three different armrests made of Iroko, elastomer and mesh round off the model’s overall appearance. The frame gets its final colour highlight with our “ThonetProtect®” coating, which is available in our seven “Classics in Colour” tubular steel hues. This special surface makes our frames robust and durable under all weather conditions. The special “ThonetProtect®” surface equips the frames of our “Thonet All Seasons” collection for any outdoor use. This sophisticated coating is tested in compliance with the salt spray test DIN EN ISO 9227-NSS (720 hours). This testing method refers to the strict criteria of the auto- mobile industry and simulates a multiple of a life cycle in regular use. With “ThonetProtect®”, the frames become extremely robust and UV-resistant against any weather influences. They will look good for a long time even on ter- races in a harsh coastal environment! • 44. 204 Gebrüder Thonet Bentwood meets tubular steel in this classic among the barstools: the legs of the stool are produced from beech wood in the traditional bending process while a tubular steel ring lends additional stability to the stool and serves as a footrest for grea- ter seating comfort. The round seat is available as a smooth moulded seat or in an upholstered version. The robust wood and resistant cover fabric make the 204 an everyday solid and sociable companion, whether at home or in restaurants.
  • 46. 209 / 210 Gebrüder Thonet This elegant bentwood classic is a masterpiece in its construction and production: the projecting frame that forms both the backrest and armrest is bent into its form from a single piece of solid beech wood. Like the original model of all bentwood chairs, no. 214, chair no. 209 also consists of only six parts. Due to its aesthetic reduction in combination with the organic form, it almost looks like a sculpture. Swiss architect Le Corbusier was fascinated with it and used it in many of his buildings, for example the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart in 1927. He confirmed that „... this chair has nobility.“ It is produced in our Frankenberg facility. 209 210 R

  • 48. The famous coffee house chair is an icon and considered the most successful mass produced product in the world to date: it initiated the history of modern furniture. The basis was a new technique – the bending of solid wood – that Michael Thonet developed and perfected during the 1850s, and it was the first time serial furniture production was possible. Added was an in- genious distribution model: 36 disassembled chairs could be packed into a one cubic metre box, shipped throughout the world, and then assembled on site. With its clear, reduced aesthetics this classic has been placed in the most diverse environments for more than 150 years. It is produced in our Frankenberg facility. 214 / 215 Michael Thonet 214 214 K 215 R
  • 51. 218 Gebrüder Thonet First manufactured in 1876, model no. 18 with the striking “hairpin” in its backrest returns to the Thonet portfolio with clear and reduced aesthetics as 218. Along with the chairs no. 14 and no. 56, chair no. 18 was one of the bestselling models of the Thonet production. The so-called export chair of Gebrüder Thonet was often sold for use in restaurants and cafés – especially in South America. Disassembled into its individual parts, 36 chairs fit into a sea chest, allowing the chairs to be sent on long journeys without any problem and in large quantities. Now, the 218 – formerly no. 18 – is once again being produced in Frankenberg.
  • 52. Known to all and very familiar, this bentwood classic reveals its uniqueness at second glance: the armrests are harmonically integrated into the extended backrest; two curved bentwood elements connect the armrests with the seat. They provide stability and, at the same time, a certain flexibility that makes sitting on this chair very comfortable. Therefore, it was used in numerous restaurants and cafés throughout the world around 1900. We produce the original in the well-proven Thonet quality. 233 Gebrüder Thonet

  • 56. These designs are probably the most famous and most-produced tubular steel classics. Their most important property is the sophisticated constructive form and ingenious aesthetic combination of tubular steel, wood, and cane work. The design goes back to Breuer‘s productive years in Berlin from 1928 until 1931 during which, after leaving the Bauhaus, he worked as an in- dependent architect and interior designer and realised a number of grand interiors and designed numerous pieces of furniture. Thonet has been producing these models since 1930. Due to the aesthetic reduction and clarity, they are suitable for many uses: conference rooms, waiting areas, restaurants, and homes. • 61. These chairs are the first cantilever chairs in furniture history. They were used for the first time in 1927 in the Weissenhof-Sied- lung in Stuttgart. Starting in 1925, Mart Stam experimented with gas pipes that he connected with flanges and developed the principle of cantilevering chairs that no longer rest on four legs. He thus created a construction principle that became an im- portant building block in the history of modern furniture design with its formal reservation. In the beginning, Stam was not yet focused on the flexing effect of the bent tubular steel; rather, he was interested in the clear form, which perfectly fit in with the modern buildings of the time. • 64. This comfortable club chair was presented in 1930 at the Paris Grand Palais as a contribution by the Deutscher Werkbund. To- gether with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer organized this premiere of contemporary German furniture producti- on in France. With the S 35 he succeeded in integrating all of the functions of a tubular steel cantilever chair with the construc- tion of a single uninterrupted line. The cantilever effect was thus doubled because the armrests, which flex independently from the seat, balance the swinging of the seat and backrest frame that projects towards the back. A matching footstool is available. S 35 Marcel Breuer
  • 66. In all of his furniture designs Mart Stam relied on straightforward forms, an aesthetic economy of means in the construction and the benefit of improved sitting comfort. In the case of S 43 he combined the tubular steel frame with moulded plywood shells for seat and back and thus created an absolute reduction. Due to the comfortable flexing effect of the frame, upholstery is unneces- sary. Its clear, reserved form makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism. Today, Thonet owns the artistic copyright for this strictly cubic chair without back legs. S 43 Mart Stam

  • 69. The outstanding properties of this armchair are elegance, timelessness and exceptional sitting comfort. Added is a lightness that only a cantilever model can have. While the first tubular steel chairs from the 1920s were rarely upholstered, the 1935 Thonet catalog presented an entire series of voluminously upholstered armchairs and sofas. The in house Thonet design S 411 from the year 1932 probably marks the beginning of this new product series. Today, it is produced with high-quality upholstery. A matching ottoman is available. • 72. The targeted restriction in the use of materials, elegance in the lines and transparency in the effect are the characteristic properties of the S 533. It owes its special comfort to constant elastic flexing. This effect results from the fact that Mies van der Rohe conceived the front part of the tubular steel frame as a big bow made of spring-hard tubular steel. While most of the designs from the 1920s were rather simple and functional, this chair clearly communicates the signature of the architect: his design combines functionality and comfort with timeless aesthetics. The chair was first presented in the Weissenhof-Siedlung in 1927. S 533 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

  • 74. During his time at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer experimented with steel and tubular steel by logically transferring the principles of the use of materials corresponding to their properties for furniture making from woodworking to this new material. Being in the vicinity of the Junkers facility in Dessau was an enormous advantage for this process. The nesting tables B 9, various shel- ves and side furniture were among his first designs. The Thonet catalog from 1930/31 included the complete range. B 9 nesting tables were used in the cafeteria of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus building in Dessau. Today, these elegant tables find their place in residential or contract environments. B 9 Marcel Breuer
  • 76. Elegant, flexible and suitable for a variety of uses. In its dimensions, the table set B 97 is reminiscent of Marcel Breuer’s nes- ting table B 9. Its altered construction, however, offers a practical advantage: due to the opening on one side, the tables can be pulled over the edge of a sofa, armchair or bed. Otherwise, they can be conveniently pushed into one another. The Thonet design from 1933 is among the classics of tubular steel furniture. B 97 Thonet Design Team
  • 78. This tubular steel desk is a successful example of the Bauhaus‘ programmatic claim of combining art and technology into a formal unit. The tabletop and storage elements made of varnished or stained wood harmonically fit in with the tubular steel design. The supporting frame consists of a single line; the wooden elements seem to float in it. The simple piece of furniture, which is formally balanced in its proportions, represents an expressive piece of contemporary history known as „The New Objectivity.“ We produce various versions of this model. With the 107 chair, designer Robert Stadler continues Thonet‘s successful café and bistro furniture tradition. • 85. The Barcelona design trio Lievore Altherr Molina has designed a chair and table programme for Thonet‘s living and dining segment. The chair 190 and table 1190 are characterised by conic wooden chair and table legs that taper towards the top and provide the classic concept with a dynamic lightness. A young and informal appearance thus becomes the programme‘s hall- mark. The armrests of the chair refer to the shape of the legs, which open at an angle and thus homogeneously comply with the design. A harmonious impression is the result of the chair legs‘ rounded shape - the back legs are integrated in the closed backrest. 190 Lievore Altherr Molina

  • 100. With the programme range 808, Munich based design studio Formstelle has created a lounge chair that combines maximum comfort with numerous possibilities for individualisation. The new lounge chair 808 plays with the contrast between a protective shell and an inviting openness, creating a place of retreat and calm. Its distinctive appearance is created through a contempo- rary reinterpretation of the classic wing chair – the shape suggests an elegant cocoon that embraces the person sitting in the chair and communicates a feeling of security. Another striking characteristic is the comfortable upholstery with its welcoming soft wave effect. This inner cushioned core establishes an intriguing contrast with the angularity of the outer shell. A clever mechanism allows users to individually adjust the position of the chair, while a footstool enhances the programme. 808 Formstelle An upholstery concept that Formstelle has exclusively developed for the lounge chair 808 completes this highly detailed and well-conceived design. The designers have created a distinct fabric for the lounge chair 808 in collaboration with the German textile manufacture Rohi: “Soul” is available in thirteen colours and impresses with a high-quality new woollen yarn and a mul- tidimensional honeycomb structure that lends depth to the fabric. Customers can choose from six different colour worlds, each consisting of material options in leather, fabric and formed fleece, with matching decorative seams.
  • 104. 860 F 866 F862 F Graphic contours meet upholstered cosiness: the solid wood frame of the armchair 860 is characterised by the recurring theme of the triangle in the individual wooden elements. The extremely comfortable seat and backrest upholstery forms a suspenseful contrast with these striking, dynamic contours. Another characteristic of this comfortable armchair, which is also suited for lounge areas in the contract business, is its individualisation flexibility. The wooden elements of the matching stool refer to the design of the armchair’s frame. The comfortable two-seater bench 862 F, the two different side tables 1861 and 1860, and the rocking chair 866 F, which assu- res relaxation and deceleration, complete the programme range into a cosy lounge round. 860 Thonet Design Team: Lydia Brodde

The small table 1861 impresses with its visual lightness, fragile construction, compact size and attractive material combination. The finely processed frame made of solid wood forms the graphic basis of the table. The compact size and low weight enable good and easy handling. The large table 1860 picks up the basic design form of the triangle in its legs and playfully establishes the formal relation with the product family 860. The round form of the table effort- lessly fits in with any space and leaves room for diversified arrangements. Several chairs and benches can be grouped around it, and it also harmoniously works along with its smaller sibling 1861. Its loose backrest cushions and side cushions, which can be purchased separately, can be individually combined. The flexible positioning of the cushions allows views of the filigree woo- den frame – lending the sofa an especially lightweight look, which is also attractive seen from the back. Thanks to its reduced form and high seating comfort, the bentwood sofa is not only suited for private use but also serves as a social meeting point in modern office landscapes. 2000 Christian Werner
  • 110. Programme range S 650 reawakens the 1950s in the here and now – the reinterpretation of a classic piece of lounge furniture. The sofa’s backrest seems to be leaning against the tubular steel frame, creating a lightweight look. With programme range S 650 we offer a spacious and variable seating solution for waiting and reception areas. The single and two-seater have suffi- ciently large seats, offering the people sitting in them a comfortable sense of privacy. The low backrest enables a communicati- ve posture of the person sitting. An optional table, which connects two armchair elements, provides a surface for placing things. Filigree armrests – also integrated upon request – elegantly enclose the seating furniture without adding unnecessary weight. Programme range S 650 is suited for the contract and residential segments. S 650 Thonet Design Team: Sabine Hutter

The inter- action of curved and straight lines makes it both feminine and masculine – it is precisely these contrasts that provide suspense and elegance to the chair. The comfortable, fully upholstered chair invites you to stay in it with its open formal language, and it is especially flexible: the various versions enable it to be used in the most diverse environments – living, waiting and reception areas or lounges. The visual separation of inside and outside upholstery also allows for a high degree of individualisation; depending on taste and preferences, various fabrics and leathers can be combined. James Irvine has reinterpre- ted a type of sofa that was already a part of the Thonet program in the 1930s: the archetype of a minimalist sofa with a bent tubular steel base. A variable program resulted through subtle interventions, based on a simple, intelligent design idea: the „modular principle.“ Up to four identical upholstery elements are placed on the standard base element as armrests or backrests at the owner‘s discretion. This idea opens up a broad range of uses and large selection of different versions. S 5000 James Irvine

  • 120. CANOR Thonet Design Team: Julia Homrighausen Sound insulation, room divider, bulletin board and storage – CANOR unites many functions. Thanks to numerous individualisa- tion options the acoustic partition adjusts to a wide range of requirements and environments. CANOR, Latin for noise or sound, reduces noises due to the special upholstery and textile cover and enables undisturbed and concentrated working. In open-plan offices or co-working spaces, as a divider between private living and working areas or as a bulletin board for conference rooms and in the home office: the acoustic partition is the homely solution for various requirements in day-to-day work life and offers plenty of added value. Both sides of the upholstery can be used as a bulletin board, making the piece a silent helper in mee- tings. Due to the weight, CANOR can be easily moved and guarantees high flexibility. Thanks to the generously large shelf, the furniture offers storage for folders, documents or decorations. All acoustically effective materials from the Thonet portfolio can be used for covering the surfaces. The wooden frame is availa- ble in different versions – beech, ash or oak, all stained and/or lacquered.
  • 121. 1025 James Van Vossel Playing with perception: The side table 1025 by James Van Vossel represents solid elegance and minimalistic essence: three wooden legs placed in regular 120-degree intervals describe an imaginary circle on the floor. On the surface of the tabletop they appear as perfectly lined-up flush circles. The different grain pattern of the three table legs, which taper towards the bottom, cre- ates an additional graphic effect contrasting with the tabletop. In addition to its function as a side table, this new model convin- ces with its high-precision production quality – sophisticated technology meets masterful craftsmanship – and with its distinctly sculptural look. The side table 1025 with a height of 48 cm and diameter of 45 cm is available in ash, oak and walnut.
  • 124. 1060 Jorre van Ast With model 1060, Dutch designer Jorre van Ast has created a solid wooden table with a graphic formal language characte- rised by subtle details. The graceful rectangular tabletop with rounded corners and bevelled edge rests on a frame of two V-shaped pairs of legs that are cleverly connected by a traverse. The legs and traverse are made of solid bentwood and thus refer to the company’s bentwood tradition. Its filigree appearance and the soft, organically flowing lines of the individual wooden elements give the table a lightweight and contemporary look and make it an inviting meeting place in private dining rooms and cosy conferencing environments. With table 1060, designer Jorre van Ast managed to design a modern piece of furniture that unifies the three themes living, working and Thonet heritage.

  • 132. KUULA Uli Budde Thonet’s vision for the world of living room furniture is beautifully enhanced with the curvaceous Kuula globe light. In cooperati- on with lamp manufacturer Oligo, Thonet presents a product that draws the eye with its elegant, minimalist design. The spheri- cal, hand blown glass luminaire, perfectly balanced on a sleek aluminium base, is reminiscent of the kind of lamps that tradi- tionally grace Nordic windowsills, while at the same time it honours the timeless essence of Bauhaus design. The KUULA table lamp is equipped with cutting-edge technology: the energy-efficient LED with its remarkable output of 1,000 lumens creates an appealing warm-white light in any room. The subtle, dimmable light switch, which is a design element in itself, allows for easy adjustment of the lamp and its lighting levels, depending on task or mood. KUULA means “globe” or “sphere” in Finnish, hence the distinctive hallmark of the lamp: the minimalist glass globe. It seems to float above the base, and its light can be adjusted to individual requirements thanks to a dimmer. The addition of a specially calculated and conceived lens assures that the light is directed to the opalescent section of the globe, guaranteeing effective, glare-free illumination. The opalescent, sand-blasted part of the glass globe is also invisibly coated to prevent fingerprints.

The clear lines and attractive material combinations signalise sportiness. All elements of the chair positively form a cohesive unity. The most striking element of the S 95 is the open backrest as the centre of the design. The upholstery and aluminium swivel cross base reveal references to current automobile design. the inlays in the four-leg cross base are special eye catchers: inserts made of different materials add that special element to the chair and visually connect it with the new table programme A 1700 Evolution in which the appropriate inlays can be integrated in the table legs as well. The chair’s metal parts – especially the aluminium connectors between the seat and backrest and the four-leg cross base – have the appeal of bent flat steel, remini- scent of the traditional craft.
