Homoacetogens
1.4.1 Discovery and abundance of homoacetogens
Homoacetogens are strict anaerobic bacteria that produce acetate from CO2 as a diagnostic end–product of metabolism (Drake 1994, Muller 2003).
They can grow on different substrates such as hydrogen, hexoses, formate, carbon monoxide, methoxylated compounds, and alcohols. Depending on
what energy sources they are growing with, products in addition to acetate can be formed, and some can produce butyrate from CO2 using the same
basic pathway as used for acetate formation. They are known as "homoacetogens" (organisms generating only acetate), "reductive acetogens",
"CO2–reducing acetogens", or simply as "acetogens". These different terminologies are confusing, and misleading, since they do not only produce
acetate, and acetogens could form acetate by any pathway. In this thesis, the term "homoacetogen" will be used, because it is a simple one word
descriptor for this taxonomically–diverse group of bacteria unified by using the Wood–Ljundahl pathway to form acetate from CO2. The term
"homoacetogenesis" will be used for this metabolism, and "homobutyrogenesis" for the process in which butyrate is formed from CO2.

2008). The formation of butyrate using CO2 and H2 by homoacetogens is referred to as "homobutyrogenesis" (equation (3)). In addition to the use of
eight H2 to generate two moles of acetate, and additional two moles of H2 are used to reduce two acetate to butyrate via acetoacetate,
3–hydroxybutyrate, and crotonate, all as CoA derivatives (Kerby et al. 1983). Members of genera Acetonema and Eubacterium are some of the known
homoacetogens that produce butyrate as well as acetate from H2 and CO2 (Schiel–Bengelsdorf & DГјrre

Edgar Allan Poe Thesis
Edgar Allan Poe essay Edgar Allan Poe once said, "With me, poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion." When stressed, writing was his coping
mechanism, and through observation, many grasp how much death encompassed Poe. Although not appreciated during his era, he revolutionized
mystery with mesmerizing story plots that yield suspense, but also makes readers question his stability. Most importantly, unlike those famous during
his lifetime who are now forgotten, Poe's legacy will live on forever. Moreover, throughout life, Poe experienced catastrophe, and because of this,
writing became his creative outlet. Poe was born to aspiring actors, Elizabeth and David, who passed away while he was only three.... Show more

Furthermore, though seeming deranged, Poe wrote stories accurate to his generation yet his motives remain unclear. As his writing improved, he used
this connective pattern between his life experiences and fiction. Hoping for a new life, Poe joined the army but carelessly mishandled the job and
somehow managed getting dismissed. Thus, unemployed he remained, but nevertheless, continued writing and publishing short stories. Feeling
overwhelmed, Poe decided to reconnect with his biological family, confiding in his aunt Maria and cousin Virginia whom he later married. Many
deemed the relationship strange whereas others assumed Virginia was merely a source of comfort. Career wise, Poe was somewhat accredited until
the publishing of the renowned poem, "The Raven" by which he received great recognition. "The Raven", being Poe's most eminent poem, features a
narrator preoccupied by thoughts of his deceased wife Lenore. Prior to Poe writing this, Virginia became ill and Lenore is furthermore utilized as her
indirect symbol. Obviously, there is a formative pattern within Poe's short stories seeing that Virginia is one recurring feature. When reading Poe's
work, no assumption is necessary, as he makes his love for Virginia exceptionally clear much like the narrator's love for Lenore. At the end of the
poem, the narrator states, "And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting on the pallid bust just

Psychoanalytic Criticism Of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe work can be related to allot of literature criticisms, but it is most familiarized with psychoanalytic criticism and New Historicism
because the stories he wrote had allot to do with the mind and how people would behave also he wrote stories based off old history and beliefs.
Psychoanalytic criticism deals with the mind of the characters. Poe's work relates most to psychoanalytic criticism because he wrote allot of short
stories that dealt with the mind of killers and how certain situations would affect a person's behavior and the influence it had on them which lead to
horrible murders and disasters. His work can also relate to New Historicism as he implanted historical events that caused death amongst individuals
and made stories based off it. Poe often wrote things that no one else had the courage to do because back then they would be considered insane and
deviant. Stories like the "black cat", "The tell– tale heart", "The masque of the red death", and "Morella" all deal with horror, murder, and sudden
death. The short story, 'The black cat' gives the audience a story line visual of the mind of an alcoholic and the way his behavior changes over
time, in different scenarios the character starts to turn abusive to the animals that he once loved. The man then starts to isolate himself from the
black cat which was his favorite animal until one day he snaps and kills the black cat by hanging it to a tree with a rope. Days later a cat comes
back around him that shows almost the same identity of the black cat, but the only difference is the white patch which is the bottom part of the cat
body. the man then starts to grow jealous as his wife shows attention to the new cat which then leads him to murder his wife and stuffing her dead
body in a wall, he later confesses to the crime and spends life in prison. This story is very dark and gives a clear identification of the mind of a
troubled individual who then takes out his anger by being abusive to the animals in his environment and later his wife. Different aspects in Poe's
stories look deep into the mind of a person and the reasons that leads to murder and death. Furthermore, Poe used words and had a story line that would

Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales Of Terror And The Raven Essay
Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales of Terror and The Raven
The film of chosen I decided upon was Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales of Terror, and the reading I choose was Edgar Allen Poe 's famous The Raven. Both
the film and the writing included a common theme of death and tragedy. The film was separated into three different tales, while all three–tales had a
very different story line they all included the common theme I stated above. In the film, I also concluded that for each action there was a reaction,
meaning each bad deed done there was a repercussion to the action. In the Poem, The Raven it also includes death and the sorrow and the human 's
need to self–torture. Edgar Allen Poe 's ability to capture his readers into his dark imagination of horror and mystery is one that will forever be famous
for.
In the first Tales of Terror Morella was a story about a father and daughter whose relationship was compromised, as she was being blamed of the cause
of death of her mother. The Daughter Lenora returns to her father 's house after twenty–six years of being away. Her father Locke isn 't welcoming to
her returning as he still holds resentment to her for the death of his wife from giving birth. Lenora comes across the corpse of her mother and startled,
Locke states he could not manage with the thought of burying her six feet under. "When your mother died I then died as well" her father states. You
can see the hurt the Locke holds inside of him without having his beloved wife with him. When

Man's Need For Woman in the Works of Edgar Allen Poe
In the beginning, there was Adam. Adam felt incomplete in the Garden of Eden and needed a companion. Eve was created and Adam had his
woman. Edgar Allen Poe experimented with man's eternal necessity and drew his final conclusion near the end of his literary career. With the
publication of Eureka, Poe made his final realization that tied every one of his love driven short stories together and triumphantly proclaimed: "I have
no desire to live since I have done Eureka. I could accomplish nothing more" (n. pag.). Kenneth Graham puts it best: "For Poe, the most notable glimpse
of eternity available to man is in the beauty of woman, always ephemeral, always melancholic" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is "the one," his one true love. She is infinitely beautiful: "the skin rivaling the purest ivory...I regarded the sweet mouth. Here was indeed the
triumph of all things heavenly...the eyes...They were, I must believe, far larger than the ordinary eyes of our own race" (Selected 27). She,
however, dies of a debilitating disease and the narrator marries Lady Rowena. Rowena cannot compare with Ligeia, and Ligeia's spirit comes back
to poison the new wife. The narrator does little to stop this, and he and his wife kill Rowena. On the day of her death, Ligeia's spirit enters the
body of Rowena and the narrator is reunited with his lost love. The striking similarities to his own love life are well noted: "Poe had experienced
the ecstasies of extreme spiritual love" (Lawrence 152). The narrator was so deeply in love with Lady Ligeia that he killed his new wife Rowena.
He succumbs to a wanton act of murder, or spiritual replacement. "Ligeia" is the most famous of a series of love stories that Poe wrote, including
"Morella", "BerenicГ«", and "Eleonora". Each story is of the same mold as "Ligeia": the narrator's beautiful young love falls ill and dies. In the case
of "Morella", she is reborn in the narrator's daughter, an uncanny mirror image of her mother:
For that her smile was like her mother's I could bear; but then I shuddered at its too perfect identity, that her eyes were like Morella's I

Japan 's Impact On The World War II Essay
On December 8, 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt received approvement from congress to declare war on Japan due to their horrendous attack
on Pearl Harbor and other actions such as taking over parts of China. On December 7, 1941 hundreds of Japanese fighters launched a surprise attack
on an American Naval base in Oahu, Hawaii just before 8:00 a.m. that morning. On that horrible day, about 2,300 Americans died because of the
attack, and even more were injured. The attack lasted about two hours. 20 American vessels, 8 battleships and hundreds of aircrafts were destroyed by
Japanese fighters.
Up to this day, may America never forget this life changing event. Japan had their own allies such as Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy that also
declared war against The United States. This later led to The United States joining and becoming part of World War II. Japan thought of a good way
to show their strength due to the fact that they were struggling with their economy and losing money to support their military. :Japan was heavily
dependent on American supplies of oil and metal, with American shipments accounting for 80% of Japan's oil and copper imports and almost half of
its scrap iron imports" (Sass, The Economic Vise). America also cut of their resources which led to Japan losing even more money. Japan got angry at
this causing Commander Isoroku Yamamoto to plan this surpriseattack on Pearl Harbor. There were two waves during this attack. The first wave was

The Baroque Period Of The Baroque And Classical Period
At this time last year, I would have considered all music before the 20th century to be classical. However, after taking a Dual Credit Music
Appreciation course, I realized that "old" music cannot simply be grouped into a single category. There are so many differences that I had no idea
existed. Throughout the years, music has changed and evolved, meeting the needs of listeners and performers. Different composers have been
catalysts in this change as they have developed new styles and genres. Even though the classical period is directly subsequent of the baroque period,
baroque and classical music have countless different qualities and characteristics. The baroque period of music commenced in the year 1600 and ended
around 1750 (Fuller – "Baroque"). Its texture was mainly polyphonic (Fuller – "Classical"). Polyphonic means that two or more different melodies are
played simultaneously (McComb). This provides an energetic rhythm, long melodies, and many ornaments. The most famous composers of this time
period were Vivaldi, Corelli, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, J.S. Bach, and Couperin. Many new styles of music were introduced, such as operas,
sonatas, oratorios, suites, fugues, and concertos. Orchestras began to develop, but it was not until the classical period when orchestral music was
perfected (Fuller – "Baroque"). In 1750, the classical period of music started, and it terminated in 1810. The texture was primarily homophonic (Fuller
– "Classical"), which means there is

Essay We Should NOT Increase the Minimum Wage
I could be easily replaced by someone tomorrow for less money." What a sober statement, one you do not hear everyday. I heard this statement from a
co–worker, he has been with the grocery store twenty plus years. His remark caused me to formulate many questions on the ethics of business. Like
how the decisions businessmen make affect the average worker's ability to support themselves. How do we make a living? Through working, but is
that work enjoyable for us? Many of us have thought about what our purpose is in working. Should it be mainly focused on providing the basic
necessities for our families? Or should we trade off enjoying our job to bet better able to support our family? We all want to provide our families a

Obama and his goal of raising the minimum wage to nine dollars an hour, as well as have it follow the consumer index so it would raise periodically
Conversely in Arthur Brooks article he stipulates that President Obama neglects the poor. He reasons this by formulating research which he gives that
says our current President only talks about the poor class on fourth of the time, while others such as former President Ronald Reagan talked about the
poor in his speeches two thirds of the time. Looking at both these articles gives the notion that our President has agreed with raising the minimum
wage. Although according to Brook's article he hasn't talked nearly as much about the poor class as other Presidents. It seems important to talk about
this class of people since they will be the ones most affected by this social, and economic issue. Seeing the results of just talking about something you

How Did Ww2 Affect American Society
How did World War II affect American Society? Kirsty Gourlay
On December 7th, 1941, Japanese fighter planes staged an attack on U.S naval and military forces based in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. In around just two
hours, America suffered from approximately 3,435 casualties including 2,000 deaths. The shattering defeat cost the U.S, 8 battle ships and around 200
airplanes. The following day, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. This was approved, and more than two years into the
conflict, America had eventually fully committed to the war.
December of 1941, fundamentally altered the United States and its role globally. Pearl Harbour changed attitudes related to war involvement for many

Companies that were going bankrupt months before were now literally begging for labourers and some even suffered from a shortage of workers.
This was mainly due to the rapid production levels the country needed to produce military equipment including ammunition and vehicles etc. A short
time after the U.S. declaration of war, the unemployment rate dropped a massive ten per cent from its previous amount. After taxes, business profits
almost doubled and industrial output increased massively at 96 per cent. Government expenditure also sored dramatically to 53 per cent of GDP at
its peak in 1945, in comparison to around 20 per cent of GDP previous to the war. This contributed to business recovery and gave companies the kick
start they needed. Due to productivity doubling, consumer goods also expanded. The war consumed one third of industrial output and this ensured a
constant supply of goods, the U.S being the only country with a significant rise in supply despite rationing. Wages also rose 50 per cent higher by
1944, this was a combination of over–time pay and wage increases etc.
Men were drafted out to fight in the war in large numbers which contributed to unemployment figures creating jobs for others. Those that previously
were skilled, high paid labourers and worked in industries such as welding etc. were forced to sign up to the military.

Brief Analysis of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe
Readers get an education when it comes to the role that the first–person narrator takes on some of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. In "The Tell–Tale
Heart" (1843) the unnamed narrator is not trying to convince the reader that he is not guilty, just that he is not crazy. He was justified in killing the old
man with the "vulture–like eye" and hiding the body under the floorboards of his home. He may be trying to save his own skin, but that is not the
point. The crime is not in question; it is the narrator's sanity. How can one trust the storyteller, if you only get one part of the story? This is what
makes the journey as a reader more interesting. How do you discern the truth? This is what it is like going through Poe's work. Most of... Show more

It is not until the end of the story when a servant shrieks in terror as he sees Egaeus and points at his master's clothing "muddy and clotted with gore"
and "indented with human nails." There were some objects by the wall–a spade and a box inside "some instruments of dental surgery, intermingled with
thirty–two small, white, and ivory–looking substances that were scattered to and fro about the floor." Berenice was alive and Egaeus obsession made
a bad thing even worse. He is in denial as to what he did that he identified Berenice's teeth as "ivory–looking substances." He turns something ugly into
a beautiful thing as he describes what he sees. Egaeus does not want to believe that he did what he did. Just on that element alone, his story needs to
be questioned. However in fiction things do not tend to be so straightforward and there are other elements that need to be taken into consideration.
Things may not be as it seems. Among Poe's short stories there are two that hint about the supernatural or the unexplained, but it is all left to the reader
as to make his or her own interpretation of the story. Morella–A Tale of Obsession "Morella" involves a married couple who dabble in witchcraft and
the Dark Arts. The husband is the storyteller. Morella, who is about to die while giving birth to their daughter, tells her unloved husband that she is
never going to leave him. He may show love to his child, but she it may be shortlived. The daughter,

Prejudice And Racism Exposed In George Orwell's Cry
The novel brings light to the far–reaching repercussions of the dismantling of the slave system by showing that slaves could take care of themselves.
After the Lifee and her family were freed, they did not ask for help from any white people until they reached Emmalee's house, where they still took
care of themselves, but also took care of Emmalee and her property. Emmalee only provided them shelter, while Lifee and her family worked on fixing
up the plantation and the house. They bought themselves everything, and eventually bought the house and plantation. Emmalee helped them by giving
them shelter, but their family was not dependent on Emmalee, which is how Morella makes it sound in the quote, that all black people are dependent on
whites. White people still limited the freedoms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lower class of the white society is most responsible for the rise of racial violence after the war. Since the lower class was poor like the slaves,
when the slaves got freed, there was nothing to differentiate between lower class whites and newly freed slaves, so the lower class white people were
angry and offended. The anger and offense they felt built up, causing them to rebel. Cooper's explanations of the sources of racism still remain valid
today. If someone is different than the typical white male or female, they will receive hate, which will most likely be racist hate. Whites back then felt
the need to prove that they were much better than the minority, so they would blame the minority for everything. THis still happens today.
Stereotypically, every muslim is a terrorist. This racist stereotype comes from white people wanting to make themselves better than the minority (in this
case, the Muslims). Another stereotype is that white people cannot be terrorists, which is a stereotype trying to say that all white people are good,
which is not true, but that is how they white male wants to be

Civil Rights Protests
Throughout history, a common factor between every significant event was the fight for civil rights. Fighting for these rights was generally the cause
for a war. However, another form of supporting beliefs for these rights included protesting. The first amendment of the constitution gives you the
freedom to express yourself, and also to organize protests. These civil rights protests happen today as well as in the past ("Bill", 3). These protests
include the March on Selma, and The Women's March on Washington that took place in 2016 (Goldberg, 7). Civil Rights protests continue in America
because people want racial and gender equality, and they should continue because they are effective. In the early fifties, African Americans in an

It was mainly called the Women's March on Washington, although similar protests happened that same day all over the country. The reason for this
protest was to raise awareness about equal gender rights all around the nation, and to show that, women's rights are human rights (Goldberg, 7). To add
on, sexuality is a sensitive area for most to talk about. Being different sometimes gives people a hard time. Lawsuits and protests have been
successfully executed in the past. This includes a lawsuit funded by the Foundation for Equal Rights (FER). Two same sex couples brought this lawsuit
to challenge the constitution on legal grounds, information on this lawsuit is unknown (Walsh and Morella, 2). To conclude, gender and racial equality
are issues that have been protested many times in American history, and these protests should continue because they shape, and have shaped the nation
into what it is today. Protesting is a great form of publicizing your beliefs. It gives people the confidence to voice what they support, knowing that

The Fear Of Zombies By Franklin D. Roosevelt
Kinemortophobia: The Fear of Zombies Franklin D. Roosevelt said one of the most recognizable quotes in history during his first Inaugural Address:
"The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself!" (Roosevelt) Fear is one of the most uncomfortable emotions that humans can experience and it
occurs all throughout a person's lifetime. Terror can also be a very powerful tool to influence society and their decision–making. Fear can drive a
population to purchase a product that they deem a necessity or advocate war. The existing fear of death and destruction in Max Brook's World War
Z led to influence survival choices of characters in order to prevent the spread of the infection. Similar circumstances can be observed during World
War I and II through the use of propaganda encouraging US citizens to take part in the war effort. When comparing the two scenarios, one is able to
understand that both World War Z and the World Wars were able to use the existing fear to influence society and society's decisions. Fear is an
existing emotion that begins in childhood and progresses into adulthood. Children ages zero to two fear separation of parents, loud noises, and
strangers while three to six year olds fear imaginary beings such as ghost and monsters (Smith). It is understandable that fear progresses in one's
lifetime, morphing from childish fears into more real–like scenarios. Propaganda, especially during wartime, appealed more to the fears of adults, as
artists were targeting that

guidance. In fact, in this tale, daughter Mademoiselle Camille L'Espanaye, is identified only by her helpless shriek and deformed corpse. In another
tale, the female character "Eleonora" is once again a young, beautiful maiden: "The loveliness of Eleonora was that of the Seraphim; but she was a

The woman is identified as a mother figure, protecting and loving the poetic "I". In another poem, "To My Mother", written in honor of his aunt,
mother–in–law, Maria Clemm, the woman is again characterized as a maternal figure whose main purpose it is to care and aid. She is identified as
"You who are more than mother unto me" (Poe 89) and is said to be "dearer than the mother I knew" (89).
"To Helen" is the first of two poems to carry that name written by Edgar Allan Poe. This poem was written in honor of Jane Stanard, the mother of a
childhood friend, Rob, whom he met when he was 14–years–old. Even though Poe began idolizing Jane and his affections are somewhat complicated,
"To Helen" can still be categorized as a maternal figure. Poe wrote the poem "To Helen" shortly after J. Stanard died and aspired to thank her for
being a second mother to him. He gave her the name of Helen, referring to the Classical figure of Helen of Troy, and thus giving Jane great praise for
her beauty. Poe mentions her "hyacinth hair" and her "classic face" Furthermore, in the last stanza, he compares her figure to a statue: "How statue–like
I see thee stand, / The agade lamp within thy hand!" He also uses the image of a statue, comparing her to a perfectly crafted work of art. "To M. L.

The Americans before the bombing of Pearl Harbor were innocently in their minds. The Americans were thinking about the war in Europe but not in

Michael Morella in How America changed after Pearl harbor, he says "The war is not part of the culture; the war is the culture." Even though most
Americans wanted to take revenge for the lives they lost many people had different opinions about taking revenge and whether the Americans should

How Did Pearl Harbor Affect America
Pearl Harbour has always played an important role in the US since it was home of an American naval base. In the World War II context, it was
unexpectedly attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service on the morning of December 7, 1941. The devastating foreign offensive caused
numerous deaths as well as important damages to the US naval and air strength and it came as a profound shock to American people (Bay, 2001). As a
result, the United States declared war to Japan, which followed their official entry in World War II a few days later (Kerrison, 2018).
The event did not only leave a mark in American history but also, as the shocking moment it was, its impact was visible in many other aspects of
American society. Before the attack, the war that was going on in Europe was seen as something that had nothing to do with the US. Americans did not
expect their involvement at all. However, once the Pearl Harbor attack took place, war became an important matter in American attitudes to the point of
becoming 'their culture'. The war effort became the household reality (Morella, 2012).

Lolita And The Dark Tower
My first thought was, he lied in every word,
That hoary cripple, with malicious eye
Askance to watch the working of his lie
On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford
Suppression of the glee, that pursed and scored
Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby. (lines 1–6)
Nabokov's character Humbert Humbert from Lolita is perfectly described in this stanza from Robert Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower
Came." Nabokov compares Humbert to many poets throughout Lolita. Humbert likens himself to a Romantic poet with the intent of rationalizing his
crime of pedophilia as an artistic endeavor. To Humbert, in particular, life really does imitate art. Art also imitates life. Nabokov created the character
of Humbert in the image of Edgar Allan Poe. Humbert's life as a character closely resembles Poe's literary works of art, and Nabokov's art, the
character of Humbert in Lolita, bears an interesting resemblance to Poe's true life.
Edgar Allan Poe married his aunt's daughter Virginia, who at age thirteen was seven years his junior. Poe's aunt also happened to be his landlady at the
time (Lepore). In the same way, Humbert started an explicit relationship with Charlotte's daughter, Dolores, age thirteen, after Charlotte's death.
Charlotte was Humbert's landlady. This is an example of art imitating life. Humbert fancies himself a poet with discerning taste in "nymphets," which

Effects Of Inspiration In Edgar Allan Poe
Title: Finding Inspiration Through Catastrophe Edgar Allan Poe once said, "With me, poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion." When stressed,
literature was his coping mechanism, and through observation, many grasp how much death encompassed Poe. Although not appreciated during his
era, he revolutionized mystery with mesmerizing story plots that yield suspense but also make readers question his stability. Most importantly, unlike
those famous during his lifetime, Poe's legacy will live on. Moreover, throughout life, Poe experienced catastrophes, and because of this, writing
became his creative outlet. Poe parents, Elizabeth and David, both aspiring actors, died when he was three. Although he remembered them briefly, their
demise altered his outlook on life. Nevertheless, refuge found him through John and Francis Allan, who accepted his ambitions with reluctance as they
envisioned him managing the family business. While growing up, they urged him again and again in leaning towards another career, but his passions
outweighed their gratification. Since he remained stubborn, they provided him with little support during college years. Consequently, Poe fell into a
large amount of debt and began gambling. Therefore, stricken by destitution and humiliated, he quit school and traveled home, only to discover his
girlfriend with another man. Overall, Poe's youth was marked by ill–fated events which became the building blocks for his writing. For instance, in

Poe's feminine ideal
KAREN WEEKES
Poe's vision of the feminine ideal appears throughout his work, in his poetry and short stories, and his critical essays, most notably "The Philosophy
of Composition. " Especially in his poetry, he idealizes the vulnerability of woman, a portrayal that extends into his fiction in stories such as
"Eleonora" and "The Fall of the House of Usher. " In these tales, and even moreso in "Morella" and "Ligeia, " the heroines' unexpected capacities for
life beyond the grave indicate that females may have more strength and initiative than the delicate models of his verse. The most significant trait of his
ideal, however, is her role as emotional catalyst for her partner. The romanticized woman is much more... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But because death also entails physiological decay, the beauty of the just–departed contains an element of terror, since the passage of time implies a
subsequent and inevitable mutation to loathsomeness.... The dying woman became a sign of her own fate, and her dissolution presented a spectacle at
once irresistible and unbearable. 3
One is immediately reminded of the scene from "Ligeia" in which the body of Rowena revivifies and then collapses back into death, each cycle falling
farther into decay. The vacillation between flushed, warm cheeks and the shrunken–lipped, clammy corpse is horrific because of the stark contrast
between these states. The repugnant aspects of death usually happen beyond the narrator's ken; his poetic ladies are already entombed, and he is
informed of, rather than called to witness, the non–consumptive "deaths" of the wasting Madeline Usher and Berenice, whose emaciated body, "hollow
temples, " and "thin and shrunken lips" revolt the narrator almost as much as her teeth do (P&T, 230). In other cases where the female falls ill
without lessening her beauty ("Morella, " "Ligeia, " "Eleonora"), he is at the bedside of his wife for her last breath.
Serving chiefly as inspiration for the narrator's melancholy experience of "Beauty" in the

What Was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt?
"A day that will live in infamy." This is what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said on December 7, 1941. It was a calm Sunday morning at
Pearl Harbor on the Island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. While most American soldiers asleep in their bunks, two U.S. soldiers saw an oscilloscope signal on
their radars. As they told their commanding officer like they were supposed to, he told them to ignore it because the base was expecting friendly
B–17's to be coming from the mainland. Thirty minutes after their commanding officer told them to ignore it, the first bomb fell and started the attack

This policy also somewhat forced other countries to side with the United States because it was threatening to them that if they were to side with an
Axis country that country would no longer be given aid packages from the United States. Roosevelt also made a second policy called the "moral
embargo" in July of 1938. This policy banned neutral countries from exporting to other countries so that they could not get extra benefits. A lot of
these policies, as you can see, made the United States look like the good guys because they were protecting other countries that the Axis were
attacking. By developing these policies, the United States stifled the economic growth to in other countries that were trying to support themselves.
The policies were used as a "weapon" that President Roosevelt was using in order to "attack" the Axis powers without having to declare war on
them. Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States had cracked the Japanese diplomatic code and knew that the Empire of Japan was going to
attack somewhere in the Pacific but they did not exactly know where. A warning that they were going to attack Pearl Harbor was sent from
Washington, but had arrived too late to tell them. The attack on Pearl Harbor was intended as a preventive action in order to keep the United States
Pacific Fleet from interrupting actions that the military force from the Empire of Japan were planning on doing in Southeast Asia against overseas
territories. The

Raise The Minimum Wage?
Raise The Minimum Wage
When there are millions of Americans living at or below poverty lines, something has to be done. Billion dollar companies and businesses that employ
workers, paying them low wages is hurting the economy. The reality is, unless the minimum wage is raised, the cycle will only continue. With higher
minimum wages in place, the entire country does better and, therefore, should be raised. There needs to be laws put place to raise the minimum wage.
Doing so would boost the economy with all of the money that Americans would put into it. With higher minimum wages, millions of Americans can get
out of poverty, not having to rely on the government for assistance such as food stamps, public housing, child care, and health care needs. They can
afford better housing options in which they want to live. Communities would see less crimes in neighborhoods creating a safer environment. Aside
from that, Americans can afford a good education, health care, as well as healthier eating and exercising habits. The minimumwage of today is not
enough for Americans to live off. Nevertheless, obtaining two and three jobs to survive occurs to often and should not be consider a way to live in
the United States. Workers of today making minimum wage simply do not earn enough to live off. As a result, they depend on the government to stay
afloat. They apply for food stamps in order to buy food each month. Most or on some kind of public housing assistance, because they are

On April 8, 2011, the United States Federal Government nearly shut down because the Democrats and Republicans were struggling to agree upon,
among other issues, what to do with Planned Parenthood. The Republicans wanted to stop federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which clearly
shows "that they simply don't care about the health and safety of American women (Planned Parenthood)." The Democrats strongly support Planned

The first argument for supporting Planned Parenthood is that it provides women with other health services and not just birth control or abortion. Without
these services, women's health will decline because many people can afford treatment. "Every year, Planned Parenthood's doctors and nurses provide

It was one of the worst attacks on American soil; it is second to 9/11.The main reason Japan attacked was due to America cutting off 90% of their

Comparison Of Edgar Allan Poe And Charles Baudelaire
Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire have always shared a mystical relationship that was a tantalizing problem in the history of literature of
vampirism. Baudelaire was surprised after discovering Poe because the two had never met, but the ideas written by Poe were drifting in Baudelaire's
head 20 years later; those ideas of doing evil and darkness of men. An examination of the work of both authors will reveal similarities in terms of style,
themes and characters, and differences especially when it comes to culture and language. The topic is worth investigation because of the mysterious
nature of connection between the work of both poets especially in "Les Fleurs du Mal" and "The Fall of The House of Usher". When one searches

Dennison (2001) clarifies that in Baudelaire's poems we have a continuous feeling of the concept of interest love that will turns out to be a
menacing death. This makes the reader feel the evil seduction of women who will tend at the end of a relationship to kill the man and/or consume
him (Baudelaire's "Le Metamorphose du Vampire"). "The poet kisses what destroys him and he becomes his own vampire "(Dennison, 2001). Of
course this is how Baudelaire described the woman mind and what he saw in it as a taunting ambiguity in a metaphorical way. In an analysis of
Baudelaire's life, Mills (n.d) explains that man has two characteristics according to Baudelaire. One is the love of Beauty and the other is the
sensual love. Those two characteristic are, according to Mills (n.d), the origin of all kind of sins for Baudelaire. In further analysis we notice in all
his poem how lethal is the beauty of women. Mills (n.d) adds that in his poems, Baudelaire's love cycle are reflected, but without the ability of the

Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince
The Prince, written by NiccolГІ Machiavelli, is praised for being one of the first political philosophy works ever written in modern philosophy
(Morella). In the piece, Machiavelli breaks topics into chapters discussing the themes and roles of being a prince. One important theme is the
characteristics of a prince in order to be successful in his rule, discussed in chapter 15. Machiavelli writes, "... for a man who strives after goodness
in all his acts is sure to come to ruin, since there are so many men who are not good" (62). This quote explains that if a prince has only
characteristics that will make him a popular ruler, he will not be successful because this is an impossible aim and also not that main role of a prince.

Generosity is typically a trait in someone that many admire. However, Machiavelli argues this by saying if a prince is generous he will ultimately
fail because he will soon run out of funding to give, leading to increased taxes for his people. He later explains, "Once he recognizes his error,
however, and seeks to amend it, he will quickly be labeled a miser" (63). If a prince begins ruling as a generous giver, he will be adored. Once he
runs out of funds, however, he and all his people will not only be in debt, but he will be forced to reverse is role as a generous giver to being a
tightfisted, stingy ruler. Although generosity is a trait that will make a prince popular, it is better to lead with frugality, a characteristic that is not seen
as "good" by the people, but will be praised later when taxes are low and when in the right circumstances, a prince can be generous with the wealth he

The Cask Of Amontillado Symbolism Essay
Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado" possess a disturbingly eerie tone. An untrustworthy man tells the story of his revenge; how he
tricked his victim into a dark cellar and buried him alive. All of these events symbolizes something greater, but the readers have to put the clues
together. In "The Cask of Amontillado," the author illustrates how people will go to extreme measures for what they desire using symbolism.
"The Cask of Amontillado" is a clever title Poe uses. Not only does the title represent the item that one of the main characters wants, but also the
character himself. The way amontillado is made, is the same way Fortunato is characterized. Since the beginning of the story, it is established that
Fortunato is an alcoholic. Montresor finds him drunk and lures him into the catacombs to drink more alcohol. True amontillado develops naturally,
transforming through age; medium sherry, in contrast, is an amontillado that has been sweetened and fortified with alcohol from the start. (Lewis) A
refined amontillado is made by mixing in more alcohol. Fortunato's true colors show when he accepts several bottles of wine from Montresor. ... Show

This essay should help shed light on the perpetual arguments that politics, income, and economic theory lead to cause and effect inequalities within the

In today's modern world higher education is a touchy yet never–ending subject of study, argumentative claims, theories, hypothesis, and ideologies
which believe educational inequalities exist and have both cause and effect relationships due to politics and income inevitably affecting both society
and social structures. However, the same is said vice versa that both politics and income cause educational inequalities. Through the subject matter, I

Compare Poe's Tales Of Terror And The Fall Of The House Of...
I decided to write my paper on Poe's tales of Terror film and Poe's The Fall of The House of Usher. I've have always found Poe's work interesting. In
this paper I will identify the author's and film intentions. As well as identifying University themes, conflicts and climaxes in both Poe's Tales of Terror
and The Fall of The House of Usher.
In Poe's The Fall of The House of Usher, the house itself is a personification. Poe's describes the house as a character in the story. By saying the
house has "eye like window" (Poe, 1839 p.702). If the house has eyes one can say it must also have a soul, there for the house itself become a
character. Poe uses many different themes in this story. Madness is the first one that jump out to me. You have a sick man who fear manifest through
his supernatural family's estate. Another theme used in The Fall of The House of Usher is isolation. You have a family that is so apart from the rest
of the world, that the family makes their own supernatural barrier's. I mean you can pretty much say the House of Usher is existing in it's own reality.
The only rules that apply is their own, and only family members are welcome and inexplicable to any outsiders.
In the story you have an internal conflict. The narrator wants to help his friend, but his friend's illness and not to mention the way the house looks
creates a conflict within the narrator mind. Another conflict is Usher reveals that his twin sister is dying. Madeline passes, and Usher decided to

teach using face to face communication. In the old days, talking face to face was the way to go. They would walk or drive somewhere and meet up

Now all I see is people waiting for the dream to be handed to them on a silver platter. This lack of effort and unwillingness to work could be due to

Edgar Allen Poe's short story Ligeia, in a style much like that of The Fall of the House of Usher, has all the makings of a classic, gothic horror tale.
It is a story of a love so strong that it overcomes the realms of death. The unnamed narrator is so in love with the Lady Ligeia, as she is with him, that
her untimely death soon after their marriage was unable to separate them. Ligeia rejoins the narrator in life through the body of another, Lady Rowena

If for no other reason but one: the supernatural element. From the very beginning of Ligeia, the reader is aware that the forces of the supernatural
and immortal will be factors in the plot of the story. Before the actual story is begun, Edgar Allen Poe introduces a poem he contributes to Joseph
Glanvill. (Though it is said that Poe actually wrote it and just attributed it to him.) And the will therein lieth, which dieth not. Who knoweth the
mysteries of the will, with its vigor? For God is but a great will pervading all things by nature of its intentness. Man doth not yield himself to the
angles, nor unto death utterly, save only through the weakness of his feeble will. In the poem it simply states that anything, including death, is easily
overcome if the will has the strength to withstand. Several more times during the story, the last line of the poem is again inserted, maybe to remind the
reader that death is overcome by willpower and since the title character dies, it is most surely assumed that Poe meant the reader to put two and two
together before the actual resurrection occurs. Of Ligeia, the narrator neither knows, nor understands much about her. From the very beginning she is
portrayed as a woman of great mystery. The narrator knows nothing of her past and doesn't even remember where he met her. Author George Woodberry

Biography of Edgar Allan Poe
Many authors' literary works are often influenced by their own personal life experiences. Among these authors is Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most
inventive writers of prose and poetry in the nineteenth century. The juxtaposition of Poe's life and work is most evident in the morbid personalities and
melancholy themes of his literary compositions, similar to those of his life.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, had been widowed at eighteen, and two
years after his birth she died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty–four. Poe's paternal grandfather had been a wealthy man, but his father, David Poe, had

In many ways she became the mother he had lost so many years ago. (Meyers, 1992, p.17). Tragically, Jane Stanard was dying from a malignant
brain tumor. By the spring of 1824 she was confined to her bed and Edgar was not allowed to see her. When she died insane on April 28, Edgar was
devastated. Like his mother, she had deserted him, dying a painful death at a young age. Helen became Edgar's ideal woman – unattainable, beautiful,
and doomed. In Edgar's mind, beauty was now forever linked with death. (Meyers, 1992 p.17).
Perhaps as a way of holding in to the memory of Jane, Poe composed "To Helen," which eloquently describes his beloved, and the beauty and purity
he saw in her. In the first of the poem's three stanzas, Poe compares Helen's beauty to the ships of Nicea, a city near the Sea of Marmara. In the
second stanza he refers to her "Naiad airs." According to Greek and Roman mythology a naiad is a spirit that occupies springs, fountains rivers, and
lakes. Her "Naiad airs," we are told, have brought the poet home "To the glory that was Greece/ And the grandeur that was Rome." In the poem's last
stanza, he refers to Helen as Psyche, a Greek personification of the soul. Poe's ode to his first love, written at the youthful age of just fifteen, is one of
his most famous compositions.

College Admissions Essay: Comparing College And High School
From generations to generations I been told to be careful on campus, hang around the right people and do your work on time so I transform that
into the golden rule. As I got closer to my high school graduation, I started to put all that advice to use and be prepare for this experience as a
college student and be considered an adult instead of a little kid who has to let my mom sign my permission slip so I could go on a field trip that was
around the corner. So when I realized that time was winding down I also realized that my family never mentioned their college experience! With all the
advice my family gave me about college I am really thankful but if I had to choose two things they should've told me prior to stepping on college
ground it would be parking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I love driving my black Dodge Charger, that I name Batmobile, everywhere without getting a penalties. Even though, you have to buy a parking permit
to park your car it was different at college. Like in high school it wasn't a big idea to buy one because we didn't have big fines that you have to pay and
they would notify you if you have a ticket but once again in college it's different. Due to the fact that"The universities get enough from us already in
tuition, housing, fees and more."they should be lenient on the tickets(Campusdiscovery ). Additionally, you're not only parking for yourself in the
University parking spot. Like when I come home for the weekend people park in two parking spots making it harder for freshman who can only
park in that area. I feel as if I burn so much gas by going in circles ten times knowing that there isn't a available parking spot. Especially, when I have
to play like a hawk and "pick out a student heading to the lot, hoping desperately that he/she is actually leaving." so I can rob them of their parking
spot.(Campusdiscovery

Homoacetogens Discovery and Metabolism

  • 1. Homoacetogens 1.4.1 Discovery and abundance of homoacetogens Homoacetogens are strict anaerobic bacteria that produce acetate from CO2 as a diagnostic end–product of metabolism (Drake 1994, Muller 2003). They can grow on different substrates such as hydrogen, hexoses, formate, carbon monoxide, methoxylated compounds, and alcohols. Depending on what energy sources they are growing with, products in addition to acetate can be formed, and some can produce butyrate from CO2 using the same basic pathway as used for acetate formation. They are known as "homoacetogens" (organisms generating only acetate), "reductive acetogens", "CO2–reducing acetogens", or simply as "acetogens". These different terminologies are confusing, and misleading, since they do not only produce acetate, and acetogens could form acetate by any pathway. In this thesis, the term "homoacetogen" will be used, because it is a simple one word descriptor for this taxonomically–diverse group of bacteria unified by using the Wood–Ljundahl pathway to form acetate from CO2. The term "homoacetogenesis" will be used for this metabolism, and "homobutyrogenesis" for the process in which butyrate is formed from CO2. In 1932, ... In addition to the use of eight H2 to generate two moles of acetate, and additional two moles of H2 are used to reduce two acetate to butyrate via acetoacetate, 3–hydroxybutyrate, and crotonate, all as CoA derivatives (Kerby et al. 1983). Members of genera Acetonema and Eubacterium are some of the known homoacetogens that produce butyrate as well as acetate from H2 and CO2 (Schiel–Bengelsdorf & DГјrre ... • 2. Edgar Allan Poe Thesis Edgar Allan Poe essay Edgar Allan Poe once said, "With me, poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion." When stressed, writing was his coping mechanism, and through observation, many grasp how much death encompassed Poe. Although not appreciated during his era, he revolutionized mystery with mesmerizing story plots that yield suspense, but also makes readers question his stability. Most importantly, unlike those famous during his lifetime who are now forgotten, Poe's legacy will live on forever. Moreover, throughout life, Poe experienced catastrophe, and because of this, writing became his creative outlet. Poe was born to aspiring actors, Elizabeth and David, who passed away while he was only three.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, though seeming deranged, Poe wrote stories accurate to his generation yet his motives remain unclear. As his writing improved, he used this connective pattern between his life experiences and fiction. Hoping for a new life, Poe joined the army but carelessly mishandled the job and somehow managed getting dismissed. Thus, unemployed he remained, but nevertheless, continued writing and publishing short stories. Feeling overwhelmed, Poe decided to reconnect with his biological family, confiding in his aunt Maria and cousin Virginia whom he later married. Many deemed the relationship strange whereas others assumed Virginia was merely a source of comfort. Career wise, Poe was somewhat accredited until the publishing of the renowned poem, "The Raven" by which he received great recognition. "The Raven", being Poe's most eminent poem, features a narrator preoccupied by thoughts of his deceased wife Lenore. Prior to Poe writing this, Virginia became ill and Lenore is furthermore utilized as her indirect symbol. Obviously, there is a formative pattern within Poe's short stories seeing that Virginia is one recurring feature. When reading Poe's work, no assumption is necessary, as he makes his love for Virginia exceptionally clear much like the narrator's love for Lenore. At the end of the poem, the narrator states, "And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting on the pallid bust just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Psychoanalytic Criticism Of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe work can be related to allot of literature criticisms, but it is most familiarized with psychoanalytic criticism and New Historicism because the stories he wrote had allot to do with the mind and how people would behave also he wrote stories based off old history and beliefs. Psychoanalytic criticism deals with the mind of the characters. Poe's work relates most to psychoanalytic criticism because he wrote allot of short stories that dealt with the mind of killers and how certain situations would affect a person's behavior and the influence it had on them which lead to horrible murders and disasters. His work can also relate to New Historicism as he implanted historical events that caused death amongst individuals and made stories based off it. Poe often wrote things that no one else had the courage to do because back then they would be considered insane and deviant. Stories like the "black cat", "The tell– tale heart", "The masque of the red death", and "Morella" all deal with horror, murder, and sudden death. The short story, 'The black cat' gives the audience a story line visual of the mind of an alcoholic and the way his behavior changes over time, in different scenarios the character starts to turn abusive to the animals that he once loved. The man then starts to isolate himself from the black cat which was his favorite animal until one day he snaps and kills the black cat by hanging it to a tree with a rope. Days later a cat comes back around him that shows almost the same identity of the black cat, but the only difference is the white patch which is the bottom part of the cat body. the man then starts to grow jealous as his wife shows attention to the new cat which then leads him to murder his wife and stuffing her dead body in a wall, he later confesses to the crime and spends life in prison. This story is very dark and gives a clear identification of the mind of a troubled individual who then takes out his anger by being abusive to the animals in his environment and later his wife. Different aspects in Poe's stories look deep into the mind of a person and the reasons that leads to murder and death. Furthermore, Poe used words and had a story line that would automatically give an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales Of Terror And The Raven Essay Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales of Terror and The Raven The film of chosen I decided upon was Edgar Allen Poe 's Tales of Terror, and the reading I choose was Edgar Allen Poe 's famous The Raven. Both the film and the writing included a common theme of death and tragedy. The film was separated into three different tales, while all three–tales had a very different story line they all included the common theme I stated above. In the film, I also concluded that for each action there was a reaction, meaning each bad deed done there was a repercussion to the action. In the Poem, The Raven it also includes death and the sorrow and the human 's need to self–torture. Edgar Allen Poe 's ability to capture his readers into his dark imagination of horror and mystery is one that will forever be famous for. In the first Tales of Terror Morella was a story about a father and daughter whose relationship was compromised, as she was being blamed of the cause of death of her mother. The Daughter Lenora returns to her father 's house after twenty–six years of being away. Her father Locke isn 't welcoming to her returning as he still holds resentment to her for the death of his wife from giving birth. Lenora comes across the corpse of her mother and startled, Locke states he could not manage with the thought of burying her six feet under. "When your mother died I then died as well" her father states. You can see the hurt the Locke holds inside of him without having his beloved wife with him. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay about Man's Need For Woman in the Works of Edgar... Man's Need For Woman in the Works of Edgar Allen Poe In the beginning, there was Adam. Adam felt incomplete in the Garden of Eden and needed a companion. Eve was created and Adam had his woman. Edgar Allen Poe experimented with man's eternal necessity and drew his final conclusion near the end of his literary career. With the publication of Eureka, Poe made his final realization that tied every one of his love driven short stories together and triumphantly proclaimed: "I have no desire to live since I have done Eureka. I could accomplish nothing more" (n. pag.). Kenneth Graham puts it best: "For Poe, the most notable glimpse of eternity available to man is in the beauty of woman, always ephemeral, always melancholic" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is "the one," his one true love. She is infinitely beautiful: "the skin rivaling the purest ivory...I regarded the sweet mouth. Here was indeed the triumph of all things heavenly...the eyes...They were, I must believe, far larger than the ordinary eyes of our own race" (Selected 27). She, however, dies of a debilitating disease and the narrator marries Lady Rowena. Rowena cannot compare with Ligeia, and Ligeia's spirit comes back to poison the new wife. The narrator does little to stop this, and he and his wife kill Rowena. On the day of her death, Ligeia's spirit enters the body of Rowena and the narrator is reunited with his lost love. The striking similarities to his own love life are well noted: "Poe had experienced the ecstasies of extreme spiritual love" (Lawrence 152). The narrator was so deeply in love with Lady Ligeia that he killed his new wife Rowena. He succumbs to a wanton act of murder, or spiritual replacement. "Ligeia" is the most famous of a series of love stories that Poe wrote, including "Morella", "BerenicГ«", and "Eleonora". Each story is of the same mold as "Ligeia": the narrator's beautiful young love falls ill and dies. In the case of "Morella", she is reborn in the narrator's daughter, an uncanny mirror image of her mother: For that her smile was like her mother's I could bear; but then I shuddered at its too perfect identity, that her eyes were like Morella's I ... • 6. Japan 's Impact On The World War II Essay On December 8, 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt received approvement from congress to declare war on Japan due to their horrendous attack on Pearl Harbor and other actions such as taking over parts of China. On December 7, 1941 hundreds of Japanese fighters launched a surprise attack on an American Naval base in Oahu, Hawaii just before 8:00 a.m. that morning. On that horrible day, about 2,300 Americans died because of the attack, and even more were injured. The attack lasted about two hours. 20 American vessels, 8 battleships and hundreds of aircrafts were destroyed by Japanese fighters. Up to this day, may America never forget this life changing event. Japan had their own allies such as Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy that also declared war against The United States. This later led to The United States joining and becoming part of World War II. Japan thought of a good way to show their strength due to the fact that they were struggling with their economy and losing money to support their military. :Japan was heavily dependent on American supplies of oil and metal, with American shipments accounting for 80% of Japan's oil and copper imports and almost half of its scrap iron imports" (Sass, The Economic Vise). America also cut of their resources which led to Japan losing even more money. Japan got angry at this causing Commander Isoroku Yamamoto to plan this surpriseattack on Pearl Harbor. • 7. The Baroque Period Of The Baroque And Classical Period At this time last year, I would have considered all music before the 20th century to be classical. However, after taking a Dual Credit Music Appreciation course, I realized that "old" music cannot simply be grouped into a single category. There are so many differences that I had no idea existed. Throughout the years, music has changed and evolved, meeting the needs of listeners and performers. Different composers have been catalysts in this change as they have developed new styles and genres. Even though the classical period is directly subsequent of the baroque period, baroque and classical music have countless different qualities and characteristics. The baroque period of music commenced in the year 1600 and ended around 1750 (Fuller – "Baroque"). Its texture was mainly polyphonic (Fuller – "Classical"). Polyphonic means that two or more different melodies are played simultaneously (McComb). This provides an energetic rhythm, long melodies, and many ornaments. The most famous composers of this time period were Vivaldi, Corelli, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, J.S. Bach, and Couperin. Many new styles of music were introduced, such as operas, sonatas, oratorios, suites, fugues, and concertos. Orchestras began to develop, but it was not until the classical period when orchestral music was perfected (Fuller – "Baroque"). In 1750, the classical period of music started, and it terminated in 1810. The texture was primarily homophonic (Fuller – "Classical"), which means there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I heard this statement from a co–worker, he has been with the grocery store twenty plus years. His remark caused me to formulate many questions on the ethics of business. Like how the decisions businessmen make affect the average worker's ability to support themselves. How do we make a living? Through working, but is that work enjoyable for us? He reasons this by formulating research which he gives that says our current President only talks about the poor class on fourth of the time, while others such as former President Ronald Reagan talked about the poor in his speeches two thirds of the time. Looking at both these articles gives the notion that our President has agreed with raising the minimum wage. • 9. How Did Ww2 Affect American Society How did World War II affect American Society? Kirsty Gourlay On December 7th, 1941, Japanese fighter planes staged an attack on U.S naval and military forces based in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. In around just two hours, America suffered from approximately 3,435 casualties including 2,000 deaths. The shattering defeat cost the U.S, 8 battle ships and around 200 airplanes. The following day, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. This was approved, and more than two years into the conflict, America had eventually fully committed to the war. December of 1941, fundamentally altered the United States and its role globally. Pearl Harbour changed attitudes related to war involvement for many American's. Patriotism soared like ... This was mainly due to the rapid production levels the country needed to produce military equipment including ammunition and vehicles etc. A short time after the U.S. declaration of war, the unemployment rate dropped a massive ten per cent from its previous amount. After taxes, business profits almost doubled and industrial output increased massively at 96 per cent. Government expenditure also sored dramatically to 53 per cent of GDP at its peak in 1945, in comparison to around 20 per cent of GDP previous to the war. This contributed to business recovery and gave companies the kick start they needed. Due to productivity doubling, consumer goods also expanded. The war consumed one third of industrial output and this ensured a constant supply of goods, the U.S being the only country with a significant rise in supply despite rationing. Wages also rose 50 per cent higher by 1944, this was a combination of over–time pay and wage increases etc. Men were drafted out to fight in the war in large numbers which contributed to unemployment figures creating jobs for others. • 10. Brief Analysis of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe Readers get an education when it comes to the role that the first–person narrator takes on some of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. In "The Tell–Tale Heart" (1843) the unnamed narrator is not trying to convince the reader that he is not guilty, just that he is not crazy. He was justified in killing the old man with the "vulture–like eye" and hiding the body under the floorboards of his home. He may be trying to save his own skin, but that is not the point. The crime is not in question; it is the narrator's sanity. How can one trust the storyteller, if you only get one part of the story? This is what makes the journey as a reader more interesting. Roosevelt said one of the most recognizable quotes in history during his first Inaugural Address: "The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself!" (Roosevelt) Fear is one of the most uncomfortable emotions that humans can experience and it occurs all throughout a person's lifetime. Terror can also be a very powerful tool to influence society and their decision–making. Fear can drive a population to purchase a product that they deem a necessity or advocate war. The existing fear of death and destruction in Max Brook's World War Z led to influence survival choices of characters in order to prevent the spread of the infection. Similar circumstances can be observed during World War I and II through the use of propaganda encouraging US citizens to take part in the war effort. When comparing the two scenarios, one is able to understand that both World War Z and the World Wars were able to use the existing fear to influence society and society's decisions. Fear is an existing emotion that begins in childhood and progresses into adulthood. Children ages zero to two fear separation of parents, loud noises, and strangers while three to six year olds fear imaginary beings such as ghost and monsters (Smith). It is understandable that fear progresses in one's lifetime, morphing from childish fears into more real–like scenarios. In the World War II context, it was unexpectedly attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service on the morning of December 7, 1941. The devastating foreign offensive caused numerous deaths as well as important damages to the US naval and air strength and it came as a profound shock to American people (Bay, 2001). As a result, the United States declared war to Japan, which followed their official entry in World War II a few days later (Kerrison, 2018). The event did not only leave a mark in American history but also, as the shocking moment it was, its impact was visible in many other aspects of American society. Before the attack, the war that was going on in Europe was seen as something that had nothing to do with the US. Americans did not expect their involvement at all. (lines 1–6) Nabokov's character Humbert Humbert from Lolita is perfectly described in this stanza from Robert Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came." Nabokov compares Humbert to many poets throughout Lolita. Humbert likens himself to a Romantic poet with the intent of rationalizing his crime of pedophilia as an artistic endeavor. To Humbert, in particular, life really does imitate art. Art also imitates life. Nabokov created the character of Humbert in the image of Edgar Allan Poe. Humbert's life as a character closely resembles Poe's literary works of art, and Nabokov's art, the character of Humbert in Lolita, bears an interesting resemblance to Poe's true life. Edgar Allan Poe married his aunt's daughter Virginia, who at age thirteen was seven years his junior. Poe's aunt also happened to be his landlady at the time (Lepore). In the same way, Humbert started an explicit relationship with Charlotte's daughter, Dolores, age thirteen, after Charlotte's death. Charlotte was Humbert's landlady. This is an example of art imitating life. Humbert fancies himself a poet with discerning taste in "nymphets," which excuses his preference for young girls because they are subhuman devils. Most importantly, unlike those famous during his lifetime, Poe's legacy will live on. Moreover, throughout life, Poe experienced catastrophes, and because of this, writing became his creative outlet. Poe parents, Elizabeth and David, both aspiring actors, died when he was three. Although he remembered them briefly, their demise altered his outlook on life. Nevertheless, refuge found him through John and Francis Allan, who accepted his ambitions with reluctance as they envisioned him managing the family business. While growing up, they urged him again and again in leaning towards another career, but his passions outweighed their gratification. Since he remained stubborn, they provided him with little support during college years. Consequently, Poe fell into a large amount of debt and began gambling. The vacillation between flushed, warm cheeks and the shrunken–lipped, clammy corpse is horrific because of the stark contrast between these states. Comparison Of Edgar Allan Poe And Charles Baudelaire Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire have always shared a mystical relationship that was a tantalizing problem in the history of literature of vampirism. Baudelaire was surprised after discovering Poe because the two had never met, but the ideas written by Poe were drifting in Baudelaire's head 20 years later; those ideas of doing evil and darkness of men. An examination of the work of both authors will reveal similarities in terms of style, themes and characters, and differences especially when it comes to culture and language. The topic is worth investigation because of the mysterious nature of connection between the work of both poets especially in "Les Fleurs du Mal" and "The Fall of The House of Usher". Dennison (2001) clarifies that in Baudelaire's poems we have a continuous feeling of the concept of interest love that will turns out to be a menacing death. This makes the reader feel the evil seduction of women who will tend at the end of a relationship to kill the man and/or consume him (Baudelaire's "Le Metamorphose du Vampire"). "The poet kisses what destroys him and he becomes his own vampire "(Dennison, 2001). Of course this is how Baudelaire described the woman mind and what he saw in it as a taunting ambiguity in a metaphorical way. In an analysis of Baudelaire's life, Mills (n.d) explains that man has two characteristics according to Baudelaire. One is the love of Beauty and the other is the sensual love. Those two characteristic are, according to Mills (n.d), the origin of all kind of sins for Baudelaire. In further analysis we notice in all his poem how lethal is the beauty of women. Mills (n.d) adds that in his poems, Baudelaire's love cycle are reflected, but without the ability of the reader to know it or at least take conscious of who it is directed. • 28. Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince The Prince, written by NiccolГІ Machiavelli, is praised for being one of the first political philosophy works ever written in modern philosophy (Morella). In the piece, Machiavelli breaks topics into chapters discussing the themes and roles of being a prince. One important theme is the characteristics of a prince in order to be successful in his rule, discussed in chapter 15. Machiavelli writes, "... for a man who strives after goodness in all his acts is sure to come to ruin, since there are so many men who are not good" (62). This quote explains that if a prince has only characteristics that will make him a popular ruler, he will not be successful because this is an impossible aim and also not that main role of a prince. The most important job as a prince is to protect your state. Machiavelli concludes that a prince should have characteristics that make him both admired and feared in order to be a successful leader and to protect his people, rather than characteristics that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generosity is typically a trait in someone that many admire. However, Machiavelli argues this by saying if a prince is generous he will ultimately fail because he will soon run out of funding to give, leading to increased taxes for his people. He later explains, "Once he recognizes his error, however, and seeks to amend it, he will quickly be labeled a miser" (63). If a prince begins ruling as a generous giver, he will be adored. Once he runs out of funds, however, he and all his people will not only be in debt, but he will be forced to reverse is role as a generous giver to being a tightfisted, stingy ruler. Although generosity is a trait that will make a prince popular, it is better to lead with frugality, a characteristic that is not seen as "good" by the people, but will be praised later when taxes are low and when in the right circumstances, a prince can be generous with the wealth he has withheld in the ... • 29. The Cask Of Amontillado Symbolism Essay Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado" possess a disturbingly eerie tone. An untrustworthy man tells the story of his revenge; how he tricked his victim into a dark cellar and buried him alive. All of these events symbolizes something greater, but the readers have to put the clues together. In "The Cask of Amontillado," the author illustrates how people will go to extreme measures for what they desire using symbolism. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a clever title Poe uses. Not only does the title represent the item that one of the main characters wants, but also the character himself. The way amontillado is made, is the same way Fortunato is characterized. Since the beginning of the story, it is established that Fortunato is an alcoholic. Montresor finds him drunk and lures him into the catacombs to drink more alcohol. True amontillado develops naturally, transforming through age; medium sherry, in contrast, is an amontillado that has been sweetened and fortified with alcohol from the start. (Lewis) A refined amontillado is made by mixing in more alcohol. Fortunato's true colors show when he accepts several bottles of wine from Montresor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Causes Of Educational Inequality This essay should help shed light on the perpetual arguments that politics, income, and economic theory lead to cause and effect inequalities within the higher education system. I will also discuss the vice versa counter–arguments that higher education has cause and effect inequalities leading to income and economic deficits. In today's modern world higher education is a touchy yet never–ending subject of study, argumentative claims, theories, hypothesis, and ideologies which believe educational inequalities exist and have both cause and effect relationships due to politics and income inevitably affecting both society and social structures. • 31. Compare Poe's Tales Of Terror And The Fall Of The House Of... I decided to write my paper on Poe's tales of Terror film and Poe's The Fall of The House of Usher. I've have always found Poe's work interesting. In this paper I will identify the author's and film intentions. As well as identifying University themes, conflicts and climaxes in both Poe's Tales of Terror and The Fall of The House of Usher. In Poe's The Fall of The House of Usher, the house itself is a personification. Poe's describes the house as a character in the story. By saying the house has "eye like window" (Poe, 1839 p.702). If the house has eyes one can say it must also have a soul, there for the house itself become a character. Poe uses many different themes in this story. Madness is the first one that jump out to me. You have a sick man who fear manifest through his supernatural family's estate. Another theme used in The Fall of The House of Usher is isolation. You have a family that is so apart from the rest of the world, that the family makes their own supernatural barrier's. I mean you can pretty much say the House of Usher is existing in it's own reality. The only rules that apply is their own, and only family members are welcome and inexplicable to any outsiders. In the story you have an internal conflict. The narrator wants to help his friend, but his friend's illness and not to mention the way the house looks creates a conflict within the narrator mind. Another conflict is Usher reveals that his twin sister is dying. Madeline passes, and Usher decided to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many get emails or texts or any forms of messages through electronic communication and have no idea what the message is saying or how their tone of voice is. Many have kids who just started using communication or haven't started at all, and are wondering what to teach their kids about communication. The best solution to this problem is to teach using face to face communication. In the old days, talking face to face was the way to go. • 35. Resurrected Love: an Analysis of Edgar Allen Poe's Ligeia... Edgar Allen Poe's short story Ligeia, in a style much like that of The Fall of the House of Usher, has all the makings of a classic, gothic horror tale. It is a story of a love so strong that it overcomes the realms of death. The unnamed narrator is so in love with the Lady Ligeia, as she is with him, that her untimely death soon after their marriage was unable to separate them. Ligeia rejoins the narrator in life through the body of another, Lady Rowena Trevanion of Tremaine. Rowena is the second wife, and she too dies shortly after her marriage to the narrator. Though he marries another, he still thought only of Ligeia. With Rowena's death, Ligeia saw the chance for a reunion with her beloved. She returned first in spirit, though... From the very beginning of Ligeia, the reader is aware that the forces of the supernatural and immortal will be factors in the plot of the story. Before the actual story is begun, Edgar Allen Poe introduces a poem he contributes to Joseph Glanvill. (Though it is said that Poe actually wrote it and just attributed it to him.) And the will therein lieth, which dieth not. Who knoweth the mysteries of the will, with its vigor? For God is but a great will pervading all things by nature of its intentness. Man doth not yield himself to the angles, nor unto death utterly, save only through the weakness of his feeble will. In the poem it simply states that anything, including death, is easily overcome if the will has the strength to withstand. Several more times during the story, the last line of the poem is again inserted, maybe to remind the reader that death is overcome by willpower and since the title character dies, it is most surely assumed that Poe meant the reader to put two and two together before the actual resurrection occurs. Of Ligeia, the narrator neither knows, nor understands much about her. From the very beginning she is portrayed as a woman of great mystery. The narrator knows nothing of her past and doesn't even remember where he met her. Author George Woodberry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Among these authors is Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most inventive writers of prose and poetry in the nineteenth century. The juxtaposition of Poe's life and work is most evident in the morbid personalities and melancholy themes of his literary compositions, similar to those of his life. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. By the spring of 1824 she was confined to her bed and Edgar was not allowed to see her. When she died insane on April 28, Edgar was devastated. Like his mother, she had deserted him, dying a painful death at a young age. Helen became Edgar's ideal woman – unattainable, beautiful, and doomed. In Edgar's mind, beauty was now forever linked with death. (Meyers, 1992 p.17). Perhaps as a way of holding in to the memory of Jane, Poe composed "To Helen," which eloquently describes his beloved, and the beauty and purity he saw in her. In the first of the poem's three stanzas, Poe compares Helen's beauty to the ships of Nicea, a city near the Sea of Marmara. In the second stanza he refers to her "Naiad airs." According to Greek and Roman mythology a naiad is a spirit that occupies springs, fountains rivers, and lakes. Her "Naiad airs," we are told, have brought the poet home "To the glory that was Greece/ And the grandeur that was Rome." In the poem's last stanza, he refers to Helen as Psyche, a Greek personification of the soul.
