Skins Essay
1. In the extract of Skins that i am focusing on, there are many different camera movements. They are tilt, zoom lense, pan, and dolly shots. In the scence of the cafe, there is a dolly shot being used. It is used to show where the scene is set, what is in the scene and who is in it. It also shows you what other people are in the background and what they are doing. There is also a tilt being used which is moved up and down on Michelle’s body as she walks into the cafe which shows her emotions on her face and what she is wearing. This shows that she is a very confident character, she doesn’t care what anybody else thinks and she thinks that every one thinks she stunning. The tilt is also used in slow motion. The effect of this is to make her look better than what she is and make the audience think that she is a popular character. Also in the cafe, there is a zoom lense on Michelle and Tony kissing. They are kissing like they would when they are on their own in a private place and by them doing it in the cafe like they are, it shows they arn’t really bothered about who see’s or what anybody else thinks about them. It also shows that they are proud of their sexuality. After the zoom lense of them kissing, it pans out to show sid. They show sid to see his emotion on his face. The camera then moves out wider to see if any of the characters in the background have retaliated to them. A pan is used in the next scene where Tony is singing. The camera pans across the piano and the person who is playing the piano first. This is to show the emotions on the person’s face and to make the audience wonder who is singing. The camera then pans across the scene to Tony who is singing. The camera then moves onto a group of girls. This is to show their reactions to Tony singing. Also in this scene, there is a dolly shot. The dolly shot is when Tony walks towards the door and starts speaking to a girl. This is to show that the girl is shy infront of Tony because she isn’t used to having boys in her school. It also shows Tony’s reactions to what the girl has to say. In the next scene, there is a pan. The pan is when Tony is walking down the corridor of a school full of girls. It shows who is in that scene, what they are doing and where abouts it is. It emphasises the girls reactions as they arn’t used to seeing boys in their school and it shows what other teachers think of him walking through the school. It also shows that Tony doesn’t seem to be bothered because he just carry’s on walking when a teacher speaks to him. In the next scene, there is a zoom lense and a pan used. Firstly it uses a zoom lense. The camera is zoomed up on a registration on a car. This tells Sid who owns the car and what the person who owns the car is like because the registration reads “MD TW4T”, which means “mad twat”. The camera then pans across the house where Sid is meant to be going. This is to show what the house looks like and it emphasies what “mad twat” could be like as there are bars around the windows.
