Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel to space on April 12, 1961 at age 27 as a Russian cosmonaut. His spacecraft orbited the Earth at a speed of about 17,000 miles per hour during his 108-minute flight, allowing him to view the Earth in a way never seen before and be the first person to eat and drink in zero gravity. Unfortunately, Gagarin's desire to return to space was made impossible after he died in a 1968 plane crash. In honor of his achievements and status as a national hero, his hometown was renamed Gagarin and the Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia was named after him.
