Native Americans
 Passed on May 28, 1830
 It was the first legislative act that violated
the long standing US Policy of respecting
the legal and political rights of the
American Indians
 The act granted permission to President
Andrew Jackson to give unsettled land to
the tribes in exchange for their land
within US borders
 Even though the US promoted this policy
they wound up resorting to the forcible
removal of the tribes east of the
Mississippi River.
 The result is the Trail of Tears & the
formation of Indian Reservations
Indian Removal Act
 Happened in 1830 to remove
Native Americans from their
homelands in Georgia to
Oklahoma
 During their journey the
American Indians suffered from
starvation, illness, cold, and
despair
 Thousands died during the
journey
Trail of Tears
 It is also know as the Great Allotment Act, passed in 1887
 divided Native American lands owned in common into individual or
family-owned plots
 Reformers hoped that by giving them land they would be able to
assimilate into the American lifestyle
 Land was given to single males of 18, but the land would be kept in trust
for 25 years.
 The only way to get the land was that they had to become an American
citizen, and break away from their native traditions
Dawes Act
