It was the first legislative act that violated
the long standing US Policy of respecting
the legal and political rights of the
American Indians
The act granted permission to President
Andrew Jackson to give unsettled land to
the tribes in exchange for their land
within US borders
Even though the US promoted this policy
they wound up resorting to the forcible
removal of the tribes east of the
Mississippi River.
The result is the Trail of Tears & the
formation of Indian Reservations

5. It is also know as the Great Allotment Act, passed in 1887
divided Native American lands owned in common into individual or
family-owned plots
Reformers hoped that by giving them land they would be able to
assimilate into the American lifestyle
Land was given to single males of 18, but the land would be kept in trust
for 25 years.
The only way to get the land was that they had to become an American
citizen, and break away from their native traditions
