child’s first school.The word Veda,originates
from the root vid which means
knowledge.Knowledge and awakening
are terms used to characterise education
during the vedic period.

4. Features of Vedic
Education
*Education for All:During the
vedic period,nobody was debarred
from eucation on the basis of
caste or sex.Everyone receive the
rudiments of education.Girls were
educated at home and they were
taught even music and dancing.
5. *Upanayana Ceremony:A
ceremony called upanayana
was performed before the
child was taken to his guru.It
was performed at the age of
8,11 and 12 for the
Brahmanas,Kshatriyas and
Vaishyas respectively.
7. *Curriculum:Though religion was
the main topic,the courses of
study were not limited to religion
only.The curriculum included
subjects providing spiritual as
well as materialistic
knowledge,vedas,vedic
grammar,philosophy,logic etc.
8. *Method of teaching:During
vedic period,the educational
process was centered round the
teacher.Instruction was verbal
and it was carried out by
lecture method.
9. *Gurukula System:In the gurukula
system the stduent lived in the
house of the guru and received
education.He served and
worshipped the guru as his own
father of God
10. *Vocational
education:Education during
the vedic period was not
limited to spiritual
education alone.Kshatriyas
were taught vedas,logic and
militaryscience.Vaisyas were
educated in agriculure,trade
and animal husbandary.
