Annie Leibovitz
Introduction: The well known artist Annie Leibovitz, born October 2, 1949, in Waterbury,
Connecticut who acquired the trademark in the use of bold colors and poses while at rolling Stone.
In 1967 Leibovitz initially enrolled in San Francisco Art Institute for painting but later discovered
her love for painting. Leibovitz had five other siblings born to Sam, an Air Force lieutenant, and
Marilyn Leibovitz, a modern dance instructor. At the age of 51, Annie had a daughter, Sarah. In
2005, twin daughters, Susan and Samuels, were born with the help of a surrogate mother. Leibovitz
was an admirer of another painter by the name of Edgar Degas who also developed a painting in a
similar photo.

Sojourner Truth was a former slave who advocated for abolition and women's rights. Truth delivered
a speech at a woman's rights convention in 1851 titled, "Ain't I a Woman?" In the piece, "Ain't I a
Woman?" by Sojourner Truth, the author claims that women and African Americans don't have
equal rights, which consequently causes unfair conditions. She proves this through the use of
anaphora, juxtaposition and anecdotes. Sojourner Truth use of anaphora in her speech was to have
the audience gain a little bit of the same emotion she was feeling which is anger against inequality.
Throughout her speech Truth uses the repetition of the words, "And ain't I a woman?" One specific

There is a particular moment in her speech where she recounts a specific memory that has stayed

human rights. Truth heavily advocated for women's rights throughout the 1840's and 1850's

she got her freedom, Truth managed to run away with her one of her sons to the home of a family of

Shortly after her freedom, she became aware that her son, Peter, had been sent to the South. Once
Truth discovered this, she went to court to get him back to her. Truth's case was one of the first cases
that a black women won over a white man's word in the U.S. Truth then later moved to New York
City in 1829 with her son Peter. This is where she worked as a house keeper for Elijah Pierson. She
later became a domestic for Robert Mathews.
Sojourner Truth announced that she would travel the land as an iterant preacher, telling the truth and

where she purchased a home and later moved to Harmonia, Michigan. During her time in Michigan,

recruit black soldiers for the Union.
Sadly, Truth's death happened at her home in Battle Creek on November 28, 1883. Just a few days
before her death, a reporter came to her house. The reporter said "Her face was drawn and

Her son was sold illegally out of state to a man in the South. Truth brought her concerns to the court
and fought for the right to have her son back. After many months in court, her son was returned to
her and he was freed as well. Peter was very hesitant, saying Truth wasn't his mother and that he

This was the first time a black woman challenged a white man in court and won. This win started to

authorizing the attorney in fact to make gifts to the principle's spouse, children, remote descendants
