Sagar Wadhwani,

INTRODUCTION
3. STRATEGY:
Key initiatives that we can take.
Bottom up Approach:
The bottom-up theory is a system that we believe is the key to
progressive development for sports in our country which support
grassroots sport culture and access to sports facilities for local
Schools,Aaganwaadis,Informal sports club and the immediate areas.
Through researching and gaining detailed insight into solution-based
ideas, we feel that the bottom-up approach always has been, and is,
the sustainable way to progressive development of sports especially in
remote places of our country.
• Bottom up approach means just observing at the local level, how
people of the community engages themselves in sports, what kind of
sports they play, their sports culture afterwards plan & execute the
involvement of youth right from the grassroots level which will ensure
the Sports culture continues to grow.
4. Low costing,Low infrastructure & Focus on
common people’s Sports:
We all know about the limitation of sports infrastructure in our country plus
the reach of resources at the ground level and if we compare Income,
purchasing power parity, cost of living index and average annual expense on
sports material/training/activity it's quite obvious that millions of youth get
demotivated by even a thought of playing/training/purchasing cost of
expensive sports material/activities like Golf,Horse Riding,Shooting etc.We
are in country where majority of people still play sports for time pass not as a
career or learning and as we are not trained to make any regular expense on
sports and Parents are also not great supportive when it comes to choose
Sports as a Career.
So its very important to focus and promote those sports which are more
prevalent because of its cost, availability and popularity at local level which
doesn’t create financial and infrastructural related obstacles, at least at an
initial level so that sports culture can be developed. If all that goes smooth
then it would be easier to identify raw talent which could be further
connected to infrastructural cities for future professional training till the time
infrastructure itself reaches to remote places.
For Example- Football costing just 500 Rs engages a lot of people at a time.
Kabaddi and Kushti- Where no big cost is involved in this game and its
also more prevalent and popular in rural areas too.
5. These are the following games which requires
minimal resources and are also more prevalent &
popular in remote and rural areas too.
Some questions to think upon?
Youth Building and Why it's important?
Sports relevance in country?
Sports Culture?
Reaching sports to last person,Grassroot reach?
Approach: Sports-Based Youth Development
Sports-Based Youth Development or SBYD is a theory and practice
model for direct youth service. Grounded in youth development, sports
psychology, and youth sports practice, SBYD aims to use the sport
experience to contribute to positive youth development. Sports-based
youth development is similar to sport for social development and It has
the power to heal, build character, resolve differences, unite people and
to create cohesiveness unity within a nation.
6. Banda Model
..Itself an experimental Model;
Brief scenario of Banda
District;
Banda District is a district of
Uttar Pradesh state of
India,located in Bundelkhand
region.Historically and
architecturally it’s known for
significant site Kalinjar which
is famed for war history and
glorious rock sculptures &
birthplace of the great
ancient poet Valmiki who has
written the immortal epic

language.
Comprising of 4 Tahsils and
e i g h t b l o c k s n a m e l y
Badokharkhurd,Jaspura,
Tindwari, Naraini, Mahua, Baberu, Bisanda and Kamasin consisting total
population of 1,799,410 (C.2011).Geographically largely includes irregular
uplands with outcrops of rocks intermingling with lowlands, which are
frequently under water during the rainy season and Important rivers are the
Ken River in the east and the Yamuna to the north. The economy is
predominantly agricultural. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named
Banda one of the country's 250 most backward districts out of a total of 640.
It is one of the 34 districts in Uttar Pradesh received funds from the
Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme(BRGFP).
Important to Notice-Kalinjar Mahotsava:
Every Year Banda District celebrates a week-long Kalinjar Mahotasava which
is the largest festival in Banda to promote Kalinjar Fort's Heritage & Tourism.
Kalinjar Mahotsava includes many Cultural and Social activities.
*Newly Introduction of Sports in festival.
7. The Experimental Journey Begins Here:

8. Incident :- An effort to create Banda A Sports Model.
Once on an official visit when I was travelling to the interior
and remote parts of the district, then in a village I found some
youth clubs organising a sport event at local level on their own
funds.I met them and asked the details about that event. After
noticing this incident I met few officials and from there I came
to know that there is a sporting culture and practice in the
district where people come together and organises their own
event on their own for just entertainment purpose.
Then after analysing this culture I decided to give them the
platform where they will be identified at ground level and at
particular village level. After wards sports player will be
selected and identified at block level generally which consists
of 50 villages.
Out of total 8 Blocks and 495 villages, we found out best 10
teams in 5 sports in senior and junior gender wise category .
Afterwards we thought to Introduce the Sports Event in
Kalinjar festival for the first time ever, where these selected
players got a chance to compete at district level in this Big
festival where a crowd of thousands of people have come to
enjoy the festival.
Outcome : Few following mentioned points.
• Recognition of the rural talent.
• Created a free platform for rural youth to execute their talent.
• Identity creation of a sports person.
• Sportsmen were rewarded at district level by various Dignitaries.
• Respect in community which motivates them to pursue their career in
sports, or sports related activities.
• Ultimately other people in the community gets the inspiration to play any
sport which will create a sports culture and sports spirit in the society.
• An initiative to support “Fit India Movement”.
• Its continuous observation and effective implementation can create a
Model which could be popularly known as Banda Sports for Change
Model.
9. List of Games Introduced in festival :-
Players-
Players from various parts of the district came to participate in block
level sports competition from all the eight blocks.
Selected players and teams were given chance to compete at district
level in senior, junior, male and female category.Overall more than 500
players were involved in the entire process.
Coaches,Refree and Selectors-

look into this matter. For every game we had experts to monitor and execute
the overall event.A team of around 20 people were engaged specifically for
its smooth implementation.

13. • Inclusion of Sports in Big Event like Celebration of Rashtriya Ekta
Diwas (National Unity Day) Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Jayanti at Sardar
Patel park(Oxygen Park) Nawab tank Banda District(U.P.)
On this big occasion along with the other activities we introduced sports
activities as well to promote sports at each and every level which can inspire
people to engage themselves in sports.
Some Glimpses of this event.
Pictures- Dangal organised in Banda District.
Media coverage of Ekta Diwas.
14. Rifle Competition- Banda District Rifle Competition
In a district like Banda where resources are limited,We also tried to organise
District Level Rifle Competition with the help of District Rifle Association so
that each and every sport can thrive, ultimately which will give the scope to
the variety of sports players.
Suggestions-
• Sports should be included as mandatory subject(Choose at least any 1
sport at School and College level).
• Annual Sports/Games day should be made compulsory (Specifically an
event and day dedicated to sports only.)
• On every Big Event,Festival,Big meets, International and National days
sports should be included.
• Local(Desi khel)Sports should be encouraged and supported.
• Each village should be connected to FIT INDIA MOVEMENT.
15. •
• Drive- Rural & tribal youth they all live in the same environment, compete
with each other and achieve sporting spirit and entertainment. There is no
dearth of talent in our country Even in 21st century India, with most talent
concentrated at the grassroots, a quick travel to any state will see
variations of some very popular, sports being played by people of all age
and gender.
Our endeavour is to become a ’movement’ that creates sports culture which
will trigger to create landmarks and set benchmarks in the sports sector and
the activities that surrounds It. Our endeavour is to empower young
professionals to pursue their dream careers amplifies & encourages us to
keep moving upward & onward.
India is a sports-mad country where many prominent sportspersons are
hugely popular and even worshipped, but despite that, youngsters seem to
prefer ’watching’ to ’playing.’
Building a culture of sports: Key in Youth Development
Mindsets need to be changed. Parents and Government systems
should encourage and support sports-orientedchildren. Thiswillbe
the first step towards the evolution of a sporting culture in a country
likeIndia.
• I love to write about the opportunities of the sports sector and the impact
it can have to create a conducive environment to support sports culture in
our country
