1. How has my digipak used, developed or challenged conventions
of real life media products
2. Layout and Font
My digipak layout had a very clear and synthetic look on the outside with their being a big picture of our artist
‘Connor James’ on the front with bold eye catching letters. The photo was used to show of and sell the artist as a
synthetic individual. I used black font to go on the front cover as it stand out on top of the artists plain clothing,
while the lighting is shinning on his face. Equally the back of the digipak shows clearly all the songs in the album
very clearly and easily. I used this simply layout as i believe it helps express how we are trying to sell our artist and
i believe our target audience would be looking for a smart yet simple album cover. The font on the back is the same
bold writing however in white so it stands out clearly on the black background. For the inside of the digipak
however, i focused on the fact we were selling the artist on his hit song ‘All Star’ where he is dressed up as a
superhero. In order to display this and have this as the focus for the album, i had the picture cover the whole of the
inside of him dressed up as a superhero sitting on a bench in Baker Street. I did this hoping to add to the ‘comic’
part of our synthetic artist and also hoped that the inside colouring would help sell the artist and help portray his
personality. I researched other artists and looked at their layoutt and fonts and found Robbie Williams had used
similar font with and image of his face and lighting on it on the front to help sell him and i used this as inspiration.
3. Colours
I believe that the basic simple colours that i used on the outside of my digipak helps show our display
the personality and feel of our artist ‘Connor James’ as it shows the simplicity of him and how he is up
and coming and that we are trying to sell him. The fact there is a performance and narrative part of our
music video helped me play with the colours i used. I did this by having the outside plain, matching the
performance part of our music video and how he has plain clothing and surroundings and we just try
focus on him. Then the inside is colourful and comic which portrays the narrative part of our music
videos and the colours that we tried to express along all our work. I also feel that having researched
other artists, such as Justin Bieber and Robbie Williams that the use of a plain and simple cover is vital
and important and it stops the cover being to busy and in ways makes it stand out and more dominant
on the shelves.
4. Composition and positioning of the artist in the frame
After doing my research and finding that the artists in other albums and digipaks were the
‘focus’ of the cover and tended to be the main image, i decided to do the same thing and
make my artist stand out to our target audience by gathering a photo of ‘Connor James’
looking attractive for our audience. This way the attention will be drawn to him and hopefully
help him sell! I positioned him in the centre of the digipak as this way it covered the right
amount of space still leaving room for his name in bold, however i found that it is more
important to sell the image and style due to the fact he is a synthetic artist.
5. Mise-en-scene
The lack of anything around the artist was so help stop
distractions and help add focus to the artist. We felt this
was the best way to sell the artist and his name without
putting anything around him. Once the digipak is opened
however, you can see colours and the London set in order
to help show there is a lot more to this artist than just his
style and image.
