My Leadership Philosophy
There are several characteristics a person in a leadership role should portray. My philosophy of
leadership encompasses characteristics such as compassion, collaboration, innovation, perseverance,
and competence. I believe to be a competent leader one must be authentic to one's self and beliefs.
One must know where he or she stands concerning ethics and innovations surrounding the education
field. A leader must convey understanding, be on the forefront of research, advocate for colleagues
and students, and collaborate with other professionals. In order to lead, one must be compassionate.
I have learned that a professional who depicts positive leadership is kind–hearted and understanding.
There will be times and situations where a student ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One who is in a leadership position must be knowledgeable in his or her field. If one is not
knowledgeable, then he or she cannot provide adequate guidance, be innovative, effectively
advocate on the behalf of students, or effectively collaborate with a team of professionals. I strive to
be competent by being aware of the latest evidence based research, by collaborating with my
colleagues, and by pursuing more about the field of education through continuing my education as a
high–quality teacher. An effective educator must be proficient in the skills needed to be a leader. If
one is not competent in showing compassion, perseverance, innovation, and collaboration, one
cannot depict positive acts of

Leadership Styles And Leadership Philosophies
There are many leadership styles and leadership philosophies that can be applied to the healthcare
environment of which each have their unique advantages and disadvantages. The choice to follow
one leadership model versus another or to integrate one or more models together lies in the
individual preference of the leader. For people like me who hold strong spiritual beliefs, the spiritual
philosophies of Mary Elizabeth O'Brien, Tim Porter–O'Grady, and Kathy Malloch provide a strong
framework with which to guide one's leadership practice. This paper will explore the similarities and
differences between these author's tenants and discuss the integration of their principles into a single
leadership approach that positively influences the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Porter–O–Mallcoh (2015), Crenshaw and Yonder–Wise (2013) also identify risk taking as an
important leadership skill. In fact, they describe risk taking as a leadership competency (Crenshaw
& Yonder–Wise, 2013). Nurses who are open to assume risk they explain are well informed of the
latest evidence based literature as well as the policies and standards that govern nursing practice
(Crenshaw & Yonder–Wise, 2013). Aside from gaining courage from knowledge many would argue
that courage or strength is also gained from one's spiritual, cultural, or even religious beliefs.
Existing literature that examines the influence of spirituality on decision–making indicates that
leaders often engage in workplace spirituality when faced with difficult challenges (Phipps, 2012).
This suggests that both a strong foundation in nursing practice and an equally healthy connection
with one's individual spirituality can provide nurse leaders with the courage to take risks that push
them out of their comfort zone and in the direction of innovation.
Self–awareness and Assessing Needs
O'Brien's behavioral theme Assessing Needs and her sub–theme Taking Time Out compliment
Porter–O–Grady and Malloch's second spiritual rule in that they each call on leaders to recognize
the need for introspection, personal development, and self–analysis (O'Brien, 2011; Porter–O–Grady
& Malloch, 2015). The second spiritual rule directs leaders to allow sufficient time to engage

Nursing Leadership Philosophy
This paper will discuss different concepts of nursing leadership. It will define the Director of
Perioperative and Cardiovascular Services personal leadership style and philosophy of leadership. It
will discuss how this leadership style influences organizational behavior and the behavior of staff.
Personal Leadership Style Leadership is about setting a common goal and influencing a group to
achieve that goal; stimulating motivation, promoting autonomy, and promoting decision making are
all examples of an effective leader (Roussel, Thomas, Harris, 2016). Kara is the director of
Perioperative and Cardiovascular Services. She has been in this role for the last 15 years. Her
personal philosophy of leadership is that leaders inspire staff to ... Show more content on

Patient safety and health care quality is a high priority for Kara. The organization that she currently
works for has a goal to become a high–reliability organization within the next few years. "A High
Reliability Organization (HRO) is one that has been successful in avoiding disasters despite being in
a high risk field where accidents can be expected due to complexity," (Jacobson, 2015). Health care
is constantly changing. Common concerns to all healthcare sectors that impact the quality of care is
increasing costs and limited resources, system inefficiencies, increasing complexity, and an ever–
expanding evidence gap (Weberg, 2012). Kara does her best to promote a safe working environment
for her staff. She is on the floor interacting with her staff and overlooking how the department is
running. She makes sure the nurse to patient ratios are safe. She also makes sure staff have the
proper equipment to care for patients. Department huddles are held on a daily basis to communicate
with staff on what is going on for the day. Safety meetings are also held to communicate safety
events within the organization. These meetings exam cause and what other steps could be
implemented to prevent the same mistake from happening again. Communication is a huge factor
when it comes to patient safety and health care

Military Leadership Philosophy
According to Collins English Dictionary, leadership is the position or function of a person who
guides or directs a group (collinsdictionary.com, n.d.). The Army defines leadership as "the process
of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish
the mission and improving the organization" (FM 6–22, 2015). My leadership philosophy started
before I joined the military over 15 years ago. My parents instilled values I have carried into the
military, and the most important value to me is treating people the way you want to be treated. So
when you define philosophy, it is meant as a foundation. Getting a solid core means having the

A leader creates the climate and sets the tone for a work environment. When you discipline your
mind for success, failure is never an option. When leaders and Soldiers are not disciplined or do not
maintain standards, it will negatively impact the organization. Discipline is vital and necessary to
gain respect from your subordinates. Soldiers begin to lose trust and faith when leadership lacks
discipline. As senior leaders, we should ensure that Soldiers are taught discipline to mature and
grow in their required skills and knowledge. Once a Soldier becomes insubordinate, a leader should

The Philosophy Of Servant Leadership
The Philosophy of Servant Leadership Servant leadership is a theory based on the notion that one
should be a servant to others first, and a leader second. A person should have the desire to serve
others, in order to be a servant–leader. The following paper will address several key components of
the servant leadership philosophy related to the book: The Servant: A Simple Story About the True
Essence of Leadership, written by James C. Hunter. First, I will examine the theory of servant
leadership including its history, definitions, and major concepts. Next, the function of this leadership
style in the field of nursing and nursing roles will be discussed. Finally, how this philosophy can be
utilized in my personal nursing practice and how the theory has sparked personal growth in myself
as a leader will be examined.
History of Servant Leadership The philosophy of servant leadership began with Robert K. Greenleaf
in 1977. He first came about the idea of servant leadership while reading Journey to the East by
Herman Hesse (Keith, 2016). This is a story of a group of travelers who were served by a man
named Leo. He performed their menial chores and lifted their spirits with his song and his spirit
(Keith, 2016). Leo disappeared one day, throwing the travelers into disarray (Keith, 2016). This
ended the journey of the travelers. Many years later, one of the travelers saw Leo in a new job role–
as the head of the order that once sponsored the journey (Keith, 2016). Once a servant,

Leadership Philosophy
"Effective leadership is getting other people motivated enough to follow your lead or goal."
Above you see my leadership philosophy summed into one sentence. Within any community
education is the top priority. A school must encourage greatness and loathe mediocrity. The school
needs a supportive environment that establishes high expectations and achievement amongst its
students. The school community needs to provide support that fosters high standards and
expectations.
School leaders are instrumental in making the school successful. A school leader needs to

An effective leader builds relations with staff and students by supporting in classroom activities.
Relationships are built through conversations in hallways, cafeterias, and athletic fields. Caring,
compassion and empathy are cornerstones to a meaningful educational relationship.
Life long learning is key to any educational position. An administrator needs to aware of not
remaining stagnant. The need to learn new ideas, research the latest trends, and be aware of the
latest case studies are all important in running a school.
Professional development is vital to teacher effectiveness. It should be meaningful and helpful.
Professional development should include information on the changing role of the teacher, the latest
developments in the area of instruction, and reflective practice techniques to assist teachers in self–
improvement. Good staff development will help teachers address the diverse needs of their students
and help to improve their professional skills.
These are my beliefs, and my plan of action in becoming an effective administrator. I believe I have
established these characteristics through my coursework, and experiences as a fill in administrator.
If I were to have a weakness with what is stated above, it would be my relentless attitude to achieve
success through skill practice as I

My Personal Leadership Philosophy
My definition of leadership
My father once told me that, "everything we do– be it in academia, at work, social or family life–we
are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life." I believe that
every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in
some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our
ability to lead or be led.
In my opinion the term leadership is a very broad and various definitions are given by authors. One
definition of leadership is that it is " the process of developing and communicating a vision for the
future, motivating people and gaining their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peters( 2001) argues that honesty is key to the relationship between a leader her followers. Stating
that people tend to follow those that they trust and believe have individual's interests at heart. I
concur with Peters, once trust ceases to exists the leader loses credibility with her followers. This
could lead to a complete breakdown in communication and subordinates shunning the leader.
In an organization, I feel a leader also acts as a translator and mediator between top management
and lower levels. I believe a leader has the responsibility to be a filter and translates relevant
information from top management to lower level staff, and vice versa. As such there will be
instances where the leader will have to act as a sieve to filter necessary information that is relevant
to lower levels, which may be viewed as omission of truth by subordinates. However in an
organization not all information should be privy to everyone and the leader has to have the sense to
be a buffer of information.
Leadership at its core is based on a relationship between a leader and followers, once the group loses
respect for their leader and perceive them to be dishonest this could potentially have a negative
impact on the organisation as a whole. Honesty especially in the media industry where we are bound
by codes of ethics, and policies is important. An unethical leader could bring the whole organization
to disrepute, in an industry where credibility and integrity are essential.

A leader must and should give respect if they want it from their subordinates. Respect must be

the art of influencing people to get the necessary support and cooperation in a community or

hand is one who help/facilitates the people, take risk and envision a better future for his group,
encourages commitment and helps people move ahead along the path to accomplish a goal. Leaders

As simple and as complex as it could be Richards (2017) cited that organization whose leader is able
to convey good communication honestly and openly can actually make a big difference, thus, it is
needed that leaders can undergo trainings and coaching to equipped themselves with skills that
foster effective communication. It will be in this sense that leaders may be able to develop or
improvise means to keep the communication between both parties free flowing. Furthermore,
Richards also suggested that honesty and openness in communication should be employed even
during tough times. Although possibilities of lies are expected to come during these times, the
importance of giving the people the benefit of the doubt should be considered to also promote
through understanding of a situation. Relating to what Richards have stated, it is more likely that a
good communication is established when members of the group did have a thorough understanding

My Leadership Philosophy Of Leadership
Every individual has his or her own definition of leadership. In order to develop my leadership
philosophy, I needed to describe leadership in my own words. Simply put, leadership is taking
ownership, setting a positive example, and motivating those in your unit to follow your lead. In
addition to understanding leadership, the USAF core values and personal experiences have helped
shape my leadership philosophy: Moral courage – commitment to achieving organizational
greatness through teamwork, caring, and trust. Since childhood, my family, peers, superiors, and
subordinates have influenced my values, beliefs, and principles turning me into the person I am
today. Primarily, the United States Air Force (USAF) has engrained in me how ... Show more

In addition to the core values, personal experiences throughout my Air Force career have shaped my
leadership philosophy, mainly through the observation of different leaders. Hence, my upbringing,
the USAF core values, and personal experiences have laid the foundation for my leadership
philosophy. I will discuss in the succeeding paragraphs those leadership traits essential to my
leadership philosophy. Moral courage is the bedrock of my leadership philosophy. Merriam–Webster
defines courage as the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or
difficulty. In other words, moral courage means to make the right decisions for the greater good of
the unit. Doing the right thing takes moral courage, especially if the action the leader is taking is
unpopular. This may even include risking your career to stay true to your own values and beliefs.
One example that reinforces the importance of moral courage is that of Col H.R. McMaster during
his time in Iraq when he made a profound impact on Army tactics. Although his superiors did not
agree with him, he stayed true to his values to fix the broken process. However, it came at the
expense being passed over twice for promotion. It comes down to putting the unit before yourself.
Col John Boyd once said, "To be somebody or to do something." His words have resonated with

Army Leadership Philosophy
I have been in the Army for almost six years and never considered establishing my own leadership
philosophy. Perhaps I always looked up to my leaders and believed they were constantly setting a
new standard in the Army. As I progress as a Noncommissioned Officer, I regularly assess my
leadership skills. Through my years in as a soldier in the Army, I have compiled my own leadership
philosophy. I believe in establishing a clear vision and sharing that vision with others so that they
may fully comprehend and follow enthusiastically. The ability to provide objectives and ways to

"A leader steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations.
Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through
coaching or mentoring" (Ubben, 2017). My thoughts will focus on what is achievable even when
things seem difficult to move forward. A genuine leader knows how to be flexible when it comes to
their crew, able to distinguish each individual's strengths, and capable to motivate and reassure the
team to succeed. I will lead by example and give my best in whatever I partake in. It is important for
soldiers to recognize that as a leader I will not participate for the sake of contributing. A leader
should actively engage themselves in activities that involves soldiers instead of being a spectator. I
believe leaders who participate in activities with their soldiers tend to gain more respect from their
soldiers. A leader with tangible goals in their leadership philosophy will keep everyone focused and
lead everyone without any distractions. My expectations for my soldiers are to ensure they give their
best in everything they do. In summary, my leadership philosophy defines who I am as an
individual, soldier, and a leader. I strongly believe, "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone,
the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does
not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his
intent." (General Douglas MacArthur, n.d.) I will continuously develop myself as a leader and

possible approaches to leadership, and there is not one single universal right. Throughout my career,
I have encountered and taken note of the different leadership styles in my path and have come to
realize that in order to be most effective, I must be adaptable to each unique circumstance. I have
also formed my philosophy by taking into account what I consider to be toxic leadership styles.
Toxicity leads to unapproachability and one cannot expect to successfully ensure the wellbeing of

The military is a living breathing organization and changes to be more effective. Therefore, it

A Personal Leadership Philosophy
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a
facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal
philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your
foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if
don't pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to
grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner's Mate
rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31
Gunner's Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner's Mates in the Coast Guard
that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner's mates
(9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a
young Gunner's Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the
rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact. 2. The foundation of my leadership
philosophy is anchored by a few key influences. The two I will address here are polar opposites.

Personal Leadership Philosophy
Participating in the course Foundations of Organizational Leadership presented many opportunities
to enhance and enrich my perspective on leadership as well as develop my own unique leadership
philosophy. By observing the theories, models and cases presented in Northouse, Kouzes and Posner
textbooks, I was able to learn through the experience of others what a true leader should represent.
While considering the strengths and weaknesses of each theory, I am able to implement a leadership
style with an effective approach tailored to many different types of learners. In addition, witnessing
both the triumphs and failures of various businesses and leadership styles, helped me confirm my
personal stance and aspirations towards becoming a leader. By implementing what I have learned
from the course and textbooks, I will address in this paper what specific leadership theories, styles
and models have contributed to forming my own leadership philosophy. In addition, I will also
define the values, qualities, strengths and weaknesses and ethical considerations that pertain to my
stance on leadership. By integrating a faith based approach as the foundation of my leadership style,
I hope to implement my new philosophy into my current and future career path.

manner and allowed the soldiers to elaborate on their shortcomings and how we could improve

What Is Leadership Philosophy?
What is leadership philosophy? According to Col William DeMarco, a leadership philosophy is
similar to an organizational mission statement but on an individual level. "It lets people know what
you expect, what you value, and how you will act; with the additional benefit of making the
organization more productive like a compass it helps keep you, the leader, on course."1 This paper
will cover three elements. I will begin by discussing my personal leadership philosophy and my
opinion on "a boss vs. a leader". I will then provide a summary and an analysis of an interview I
conducted with an Army battalion–level commander concerning his most challenging leadership
issue. My personal leadership philosophy is, "Your duty title makes you a commander; your people
will decide if you are a leader." Prior to becoming a commissioned officer, I was an enlisted member
in the Air National Guard for 7 years. As a young follower, you begin to decide the traits you feel a
good leader should possess. I feel that in order to be a good leader, you must first experience being a
follower. You must lead by example and be fair to all of your subordinates. You should make your
people feel like they have a purpose in your organization. Things such as simple as saying "we"
instead of "I" and showing how to do things instead of demanding them to be done will help your
people decide to follow you. In the old days of the military, a commander would instill fear in
his/her people. Today, I believe it

Leadership is at its core an abstract idea; what is the manifestation of leadership is style. Each leader
has some type of philosophy, know or unknown. This would be what I call a "leadership belief."
Irwin says, "As with others we must vet these beliefs and root out any that are fundamentally
untrue." (Irwin 2014) This subject may be one of the more important subjects in a person's life. In
my very core I have beliefs, and these beliefs matter. When a leader has a belief or even a mistaken
belief it is manifested in his behavior. As Dr. Irwin wrote in "Impact: Great leadership Changes

one area and not sinks. Since the outcome of the Titanic is well known, I can see this philosophy is

My Leadership Philosophy : My Philosophy Of Leadership
INTRODUCTION
My leadership philosophy is very simple and can be compared to the simplicity of the lifecycle of a
tree. A seed forms into a sapling which in turn grows into a mature, majestic, vibrant–full
representation of those leaders who have contributed to their development and growth process on
their journey to become leaders. Seems very simple when put in to those terms, however, each of
these processes are very complex and need everyone's input, attention and examples; both good and
bad, leadership to build on their own style. Leadership is a lifecycle and ever evolving! Leadership
defined in my own words is having the ability to create an environment where everyone has the
chance to thrive and learn from each other both positively and negatively. I certainly do not know
everything there is to know about being a good leader, but I am confident and comfortable in my
own area of expertise. I am a mature tree that falls in a row amongst many other trees. I have
worked for horrible leaders and great leaders throughout my career. I have learned so much from
both types and have taken, what I feel, the best from each one to grow my own style. I don't
honestly feel that there is another one of me or my leadership style running around. I am unique.
LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS
My leadership behaviors are very much systematic in the way I handle situations. I see where it is
that I have failed my peeps, I try to find those new innovative ways to re–engage and improve. This
behavior in the tree world is called moving the nutrients beneath the bark to the areas that need the
food to grow. Sometime I have a tendency to focus on the easy routes (roots) that will give me the
most bang for my buck and overlook those personnel that are wasting my time. No matter what I do
or say there will be those few who just are not worth the investment in growth (pruning). I know I
need to really single those individuals out that are performing well above their rank but at the
moment I only have a select few who have gone above and beyond and have been recognized but
there are those few with small accomplishments that if I took the time to say something to them
directly as it happened it may speak volumes. I severely lack

meaning with a positive connotation (Spears, 2005). This leadership style, servant leadership is
typically referred to having a connection with the Christian religion because it is based on some of

Therefore, Nelson Mandela's leadership style was an exceptional example of components of servant
leadership. The reason being, is because as a servant leader all of those traits has importance. The
characteristic of humility is a major one because leaders have to be able to take a step back and
understand that they are serving others first which can lead to a better cause. This example is
relevant pertaining to servant leaders and how they have to be selfless. Next, forgiveness and
sympathy are necessary because everyone is not going to make the right decisions, but being able to
feel for people and understand their point of view is essential. Throughout Mandela's life he was
able to withstand so much from being imprisoned for twenty–seven years, but still having a piece of
mind and being able to see the bigger picture while understanding that what he was doing was for
his country Africa. Differences in African Culture
The African cultures, churches ultimate goal is to integrate kingship and the servant leadership style

I define leadership as having the ability to influence others to put forth as much effort for a team
goal and objective as the amount of effort others would put forth towards their own personal goals
or efforts. My goal is to coach college football and my leadership philosophy is base upon my desire
to teach and coach the sport of football, however my leadership strategy can and will be used in
other areas of my life. My leadership philosophy is base upon a three–prong concept, Honesty,
Organizational atmosphere that focus on teaching, Respect. The concept of honesty for my

addition to off–season conditioning and nutritional assistance, my practices will be comprised of
teaching strategies for both offense and defense, crossing training players to play multiple positions

Leadership Philosophy
How I define leadership has mostly to do with 27 years of service in the Army and 20 of those years
spent as a Non–Commissioned Officer. Simply put, I believe leadership is the balancing of two
competing priorities, the accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the people that are in
your charge. Others can probably think up a million of other subcategories that go into defining
leadership, but I believe those are the two over arching things a leader has to do. I see those two
priorities being symbiotic because without the people I can't accomplish the mission but without the
mission I don't need the people. My future leadership goals within Troy will be limited because all
of my classes will be online but I can still be a leader by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Integrity I believe is the most important trait because without integrity all of the other traits are
diminished. Maintaining competence is a never ending struggle and requires me as a leader to keep
learning. I strive to maintain my competence by doing things that help me grow as a leader. Those
things include taking college classes, attending advanced military schooling and reading new
materials. If I can demonstrate competence to followers I find that I can get buy in a lot easier which
in turn makes the team more productive. Loyalty, is a two way road. I believe that a leader has to
earn the loyalty of their followers. As a leader I have tried to demonstrate loyalty not only to the
followers but to the organization. When the followers know that you are going to take care of them
they will often work harder and longer. That is not to say that Loyalty has to be earned, and given to
the follower, and the organization. And then there is fairness. My idea of fairness is more of an "old
school" idea of fairness. Fairness to me means giving credit to individual on the work they do and
treating individuals Fairness to me is not treating everyone the same it is giving them credit for the

The Philosophy Of Leadership And Leadership
1. Leadership is defined on Merriam–Webster.com as "the power or ability to lead other people".
This definition is weak at best. Throughout my career, I have witnessed this form of leadership
applying control of power, simply leading by giving direction, guidelines and instruction. There
never seemed to be any care for if they were actually inspiring the next generation to follow in their
footsteps. This seems counterproductive at best. In my experience, I have found that I always
worked harder for and trusted more in a leader who I was able to connect with, admire, or look up
to. Recognition from an admired leader inspired me to do more. So my philosophy on leadership is:
Inspire those around you by respecting them, giving recognition, coaching and finally lead by
example.
2. The philosophy of leadership I strive for can be defined as inspirational in type. One of the
greatest things about this philosophy style is that it creates trust among everyone. When I was a
young seaman on the Coast Guard Cutter Sedge, I was not among this idealized example of
inspirational leadership. We were often broken down by superiors with derogatory name calling or
negative motivation. At no time during my 2 years aboard can I remember a time when I admired
the leadership. It was simply getting the work done while being called names or be insubordinate. It
was an unfortunate situation. No trust was ever instilled in leadership because of this. As long as
leadership continued

My Philosophy : My Leadership Philosophy
What is a leader? We know the answer to this question, but is still examined and studied continually.
People have studied historical examples and written hundreds of books, but there has not been a
definitive answer. Every single person is different; hence their leadership style is different. In this
paper, I will show and explain my style of leadership. I will explain my leadership philosophy,
which is base on established principles and theories. Fortunately enough, I interviewed a
commander whom I been friends with for many of years. Finally, I will analyze this interview to

We must set a vision and define a clear path for the squadron to work towards. This in turns defined
the tempo and mission, leveraging subordinate's positions to allow the work of the mission to be
accelerated. I agreed with the philosophical approach that DeMarco examined, " instilling faith in
the unit's members that your philosophy is indeed genuine–instilling a sense that as the commander,
as the leader...I am indeed FOR you all as an organization."2 He has summarized my philosophical
approach perfectly. As a leader, we must trust our subordinates and their ability to accomplish the
mission, in accordance with your vision and goals. The commander is contributing to the greater
good of the organization, not in the position of authority for their own personal power and selfish
gains2. Commanders have their own characteristics of leadership. Based on the ten characteristics
summarized by Larry Spears, I would identify a few as my own pronounced leadership
characteristics. The most important characteristic that a leader should have is listening skill.
Commanders must value the communication of their subordinated and superior, which leads to
righteous decision–makings. Listening provides a leader a period of reflection and is key to personal
growth. With listening, there must be a level of awareness to understand issues including ethics,
power and most importantly values. "Able leaders are usually sharply awake and reasonably
disturbed. They

Leadership Philosophies
My leadership philosophy is all about people, to elaborate on this principle I believe that Soldiers
are the Army's most precious assets as a fighting force. I believe that leadership is treating Soldiers
with respect to influence them in order to achieve their full potential and strive to provide them with
mentoring along the way. Being a Noncommissioned Officer means a lot to me, the day I became a
Noncommissioned Officer was a very important day in my life. The place was Balad, Iraq, 2003 at
the memorial ceremony after my unit lost Staff Sergeant Joseph Camara. He was our first casualty in
combat. He was a soft spoken leader that rarely raised his voice, but he also carried himself with
confidence. I will never forget the last words I heard from him the day he died, his tone and words
were engraved in my memory from that point in my life as a Soldier. On that day, his tone was
different as I heard him raised his voice to one of his team leaders saying: "Respect the Soldier, it
does not matter what rank he is...respect the Soldier!" I knew then, I wanted to be a leader like him.
I wanted to stand up for those with whom I will serve and those with whom would look up to me as
their leader. I know that being a leader is hard. It is often a crafted form of art constantly tested by
challenging situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, my opinion of being a leader is about two attributes that I believe a leader must possess
and they are non–negotiable: Integrity and Character. As Soldiers we all make mistakes and learn
from experience, a leader is able to recognize that everyone is a human being and therefore
everyone has a need to learn and grow as an individual. Leaders must possess the integrity to own
the "the good and the bad" and carry that weight evenly with character embodied by the Army

Example Of A Leadership Philosophy
My leadership philosophy can be broken down and explained in three words: firm, fair, and
accountable. All three are equally importable and one is useless without the other. Some people base
their philosophy off of actions i.e. "do the right thing". I prefer to base my philosophy on attributes.
The NCO guide uses the phrase "Be, Know, Do". It is three simple words that encompasses what it
means to be a Non Commissioned Officer. A leader should always be firm, know that everyone is
created equal, and do the right thing and be accountable for their actions. Firm: Nothing displays
character, presence and intellect better than a leader with solid convictions. It shows your peers and

A Leadership Philosophy is our own definition of our leadership styles. It consists of our beliefs,
personal values, and assumptions. "There is not one right way to lead. Leadership should not be
studied as a recipe or a checklist. It is more important to develop a philosophy of leadership to guide
your actions (Komives, Lucas, and McMahon, 2013)." We must create our own definition of
leadership in order to have an understanding of how to be leaders. Understanding our leadership

I believe that a leader must implement their values and beliefs to create the leadership style that it is
best for them and that aligns with the organization's vision and purpose. Personally, I lead with the
ideologies of the Relational Readership Model. This model calls for positive change through a
process that is empowering, inclusive, and ethical (Komives et al, 2013). Since we all have our
definition of leadership, it is hard to have a standard definition of leadership. My definition has been
reinforced by different assessment throughout the years. For instance, when I took the assessment
True Color I turned out to be a Gold, which I expected because Golds tend to be organized and like
to plan ahead to be prepared. When leading, I am always prepared. I tend to plan everything ahead
to assure success. When thing do go wrong, I rely on my top strength from the StrengthsQuest
assessment. This strength is Context; which means I look for answers looking back at my blueprints
and original plans. This helps me be confident that anything will work out based on the goal set at
the beginning. Both of these qualities, I believe are extremely important for everyone to practice in
order to accomplish leaderships. The past year, I served in the Hispanic Latino Student Union

I believe that I would have made many of the same decisions with only a few changes if I were

focused behaviors which "include developing a positive climate, facilitating team member

necessary for the organization which was accomplished when the commander created the

organization. The commander brought underutilized/marginalized members back into the
organization and spoke with all ranks within the organization to get their input on the health of the
squadron for squadron improvements. I was very impressed with the way the commander viewed
the type of person he wanted in the CEM; an individual with a differing viewpoint that can assist in

A Personal Leadership Philosophy
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a
facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past present and future, my personal
philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your
foundation of leadership came from you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if
don't pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to
During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay approximately 55 Gunner's mates
(9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a
young Gunner's Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the
rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact.
2. The foundation of my leadership philosophy is anchored by a few key influences. The two I will
address here are as polar opposites as they come. ETCM Joe Rowe was the Chief of the Mess in
Valdez, AK as well as the ESD supervisor. Joe taught me about empowering your workforce. He

A Theoretical Philosophy of Leadership
WHAT IS LEADERSHIP
Leadership is about the relationship and utilization of influence in various communication forms
applied in a process that allows individuals and groups to work together to achieve collaborative
goals (Ziegler & Degrosky, 2008). If influence is the driver of leadership, then power, is the engine.
Having influence and power alone is insufficient to create leadership much like having a driver and
a vehicle do not automatically create transportation. There are other components necessary to make
the car move from one place to another. Power and influence utilized in an ethical and efficient
manner gains willing compliance and commitment. Contemporary leadership theories based on

An ethical leader must be courageous enough to stand against adversity while heralding and
defending the right course of action with the intent of not bringing detriment to others or a situation.
A leader cannot lead his or her organization through change without courage and must transmit the
vision well enough to prompt employees into taking calculated risks (Collins et al., 1998). The duty
to overcome moral and ethical dilemmas requires recognition of pitfalls and hazards and
anticipation of unforeseen ones (Morrison, 2001). Failing to safeguard the leadership burden erodes
the very fabric upon which our values are based. Moral and ethical guides handed down across
centuries serve as the foundation of human kind's religious, spiritual, and philosophical base.
Most spiritual and ethical guides of both East and West hold moral precepts at the foundation of the
philosophy, and send the consistent message to work hard, do right by others, and lead an orderly
life. Contained within these guides are core attributes, integrity, compassion, and humility. The texts
of the moral and ethical guides cover other subjects, as well, work ethic, courage, and perseverance.

The difference between management and leadership is leaders lead people, and things require being
managed (Hunter, 2012). Ensuring equal and fair treatment for human beings with the same
fundamental human right will assist an individual developing their leadership philosophy. Therefore,
I will strive to take a moment and reflect on at least one specific situation throughout the day with
an anticipation of handling it differently than I would have in the past. Keeping an open mind for
differences of opinions or different methods of completing tasks is difficult. I have discovered
treating others, as I want them to treat me, is not an effortless task at times. I struggle with the
acceptance and understanding of people handling situations differently than how I would handle
them. The method in which completion took place is irrelevant, aside moral and ethical differences,
if completing the task with suitable standards. Learning to develop and grow my thought processes
has allowed me to demonstrate similar behaviors to others. Treating others from a comparable
behavioral mindset and attitude will promote my increasing ability to lead and love others.

Leadership Philosophy
Leadership encompasses the world around us, and is seen in some shape or form every single day.
Without it, there would be no sense of direction for anyone, people would be lost. Leaders are those
who take initiative to do what others won't. Those who strive to make a difference in our ill directed
world and guide those who need to be guided, or pushed, further than they deem themselves
capable. Leadership doesn't take enormous physical strength or even a booming voice. All it takes is

No matter the career, the upbringing, or any other factor at all, the impact on society that every

because we learn a lesson, or many, from every person throughout. And like I said, leadership

Leadership : A Personal Philosophy
LEADERSHIP: A PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Kandice Carpenter
Saint Leo University
Abstract
The text will cover a number of different aspects of leadership. We will consider my personal
understanding of leadership and it relates to certain leadership theories. In my philosophy of
leadership, I will address what role I believe a health care leader should play, what leadership theory
they should follow, and why leaders should follow that theory. It will describe my current sphere of
influence and how it has shaped my understanding of leadership. I will explain how I am a leader in
my current position and how I apply my leadership philosophy within my position. Then I will
provide how I see the use of informal, formal, positive and negative power as it applies to my
personal philosophy of leadership.
Leadership: A Personal Philosophy
Leadership is something that comes natural for some and is a developed skill for others. If we take a
look at the role of the leader, we look for certain traits in a person. For example, in grade school,
there always seems to be clicks, large and small groups of people that cling together. When we
examine these social sub–groups, we often find that there is always one person that leads the group.
This person is usually the person that brings the group together. I remember being in social circles
with people that I knew I would never be friends with. However, we may have one or two people in
common, thus we remain friends. Overtime, we

Nursing Leadership Philosophy
"Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the
achievement of a goal" (Kruse, 2003). Being a leader is not only about having followers and
finishing set goals but also about working well with others while inspiring them. Effective leaders
are essential to guide others to success, whether it's about inspiring others, having a vision or
making a change. In order to attempt to develop a personal philosophy of leadership, I believe it is
significant to examine what is essential to me as a leader. Throughout my nursing career I have
encountered all types of leaderships from authoritarian to laissez–faire styles. I recently switched
jobs and unknowingly I embarked in the search for leadership balance. What do I mean by this? I
was searching for a place where I would be able to voice my concerns, where effective
communication is present at all times, where my vision and passion for my nursing care will be
taking into consideration and rewarded. The purpose of this paper is to define my nursing
philosophy of leadership.

Personal Leadership Philosophy Of Leadership
I believe a personal leadership philosophy is developed through experiences as both a follower and a
leader. Leadership skills are gained in many ways such as learning from the successful methods and
mistakes of others, constructive criticism from followers and leader colleagues alike and remaining
current in leadership literature. I have developed my theory based on personal encounters with
positive and negative leadership experiences which include leading by example, listening and
adapting to your followers needs and lastly, including followers in times of significant change.
I believe that leading by example is a vital tenet of leadership. Johnson (2015) found that when a
police field supervisor proactively engaged in investigative work, the volume of same work
performed by their patrol officers doubled (p. 238). Johnson (2015, p. 237) also found that the
supervisors had to only engage in one or two of these proactive activities in order to spark the patrol
officers to conduct extra investigative work. I believe that if you want a specific result from your
followers such as working more efficiently, improving their skills or showing initiative in the
workplace you must do the same so they do not feel that they are merely picking up your slack.
When a leader is contributing towards the common goal it makes the leader a member of the team
and not just the task manager.
My second position on leadership is that a leader's style depends on their followers and situation at

My Leadership Philosophy

  • 1. My Leadership Philosophy There are several characteristics a person in a leadership role should portray. My philosophy of leadership encompasses characteristics such as compassion, collaboration, innovation, perseverance, and competence. I believe to be a competent leader one must be authentic to one's self and beliefs. One must know where he or she stands concerning ethics and innovations surrounding the education field. A leader must convey understanding, be on the forefront of research, advocate for colleagues and students, and collaborate with other professionals. In order to lead, one must be compassionate. I have learned that a professional who depicts positive leadership is kind–hearted and understanding. There will be times and situations where a student ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I strive to be competent by being aware of the latest evidence based research, by collaborating with my colleagues, and by pursuing more about the field of education through continuing my education as a high–quality teacher. • 3. Leadership Styles And Leadership Philosophies There are many leadership styles and leadership philosophies that can be applied to the healthcare environment of which each have their unique advantages and disadvantages. The choice to follow one leadership model versus another or to integrate one or more models together lies in the individual preference of the leader. For people like me who hold strong spiritual beliefs, the spiritual philosophies of Mary Elizabeth O'Brien, Tim Porter–O'Grady, and Kathy Malloch provide a strong framework with which to guide one's leadership practice. This paper will explore the similarities and differences between these author's tenants and discuss the integration of their principles into a single leadership approach that positively influences the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Porter–O–Mallcoh (2015), Crenshaw and Yonder–Wise (2013) also identify risk taking as an important leadership skill. In fact, they describe risk taking as a leadership competency (Crenshaw & Yonder–Wise, 2013). Nurses who are open to assume risk they explain are well informed of the latest evidence based literature as well as the policies and standards that govern nursing practice (Crenshaw & Yonder–Wise, 2013). Aside from gaining courage from knowledge many would argue that courage or strength is also gained from one's spiritual, cultural, or even religious beliefs. Existing literature that examines the influence of spirituality on decision–making indicates that leaders often engage in workplace spirituality when faced with difficult challenges (Phipps, 2012). This suggests that both a strong foundation in nursing practice and an equally healthy connection with one's individual spirituality can provide nurse leaders with the courage to take risks that push them out of their comfort zone and in the direction of innovation. Self–awareness and Assessing Needs O'Brien's behavioral theme Assessing Needs and her sub–theme Taking Time Out compliment Porter–O–Grady and Malloch's second spiritual rule in that they each call on leaders to recognize the need for introspection, personal development, and self–analysis (O'Brien, 2011; Porter–O–Grady & Malloch, 2015). The second spiritual rule directs leaders to allow sufficient time to engage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Nursing Leadership Philosophy This paper will discuss different concepts of nursing leadership. It will define the Director of Perioperative and Cardiovascular Services personal leadership style and philosophy of leadership. It will discuss how this leadership style influences organizational behavior and the behavior of staff. Personal Leadership Style Leadership is about setting a common goal and influencing a group to achieve that goal; stimulating motivation, promoting autonomy, and promoting decision making are all examples of an effective leader (Roussel, Thomas, Harris, 2016). Kara is the director of Perioperative and Cardiovascular Services. She has been in this role for the last 15 years. Her personal philosophy of leadership is that leaders inspire staff to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patient safety and health care quality is a high priority for Kara. The organization that she currently works for has a goal to become a high–reliability organization within the next few years. "A High Reliability Organization (HRO) is one that has been successful in avoiding disasters despite being in a high risk field where accidents can be expected due to complexity," (Jacobson, 2015). Health care is constantly changing. Common concerns to all healthcare sectors that impact the quality of care is increasing costs and limited resources, system inefficiencies, increasing complexity, and an ever– expanding evidence gap (Weberg, 2012). Kara does her best to promote a safe working environment for her staff. She is on the floor interacting with her staff and overlooking how the department is running. She makes sure the nurse to patient ratios are safe. She also makes sure staff have the proper equipment to care for patients. Department huddles are held on a daily basis to communicate with staff on what is going on for the day. Safety meetings are also held to communicate safety events within the organization. These meetings exam cause and what other steps could be implemented to prevent the same mistake from happening again. • 7. Military Leadership Philosophy According to Collins English Dictionary, leadership is the position or function of a person who guides or directs a group (collinsdictionary.com, n.d.). The Army defines leadership as "the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization" (FM 6–22, 2015). My leadership philosophy started before I joined the military over 15 years ago. My parents instilled values I have carried into the military, and the most important value to me is treating people the way you want to be treated. So when you define philosophy, it is meant as a foundation. Getting a solid core means having the clarity to guide decisions and a focus on sorting through all the ... • 9. The Philosophy Of Servant Leadership The Philosophy of Servant Leadership Servant leadership is a theory based on the notion that one should be a servant to others first, and a leader second. A person should have the desire to serve others, in order to be a servant–leader. The following paper will address several key components of the servant leadership philosophy related to the book: The Servant: A Simple Story About the True Essence of Leadership, written by James C. Hunter. First, I will examine the theory of servant leadership including its history, definitions, and major concepts. Next, the function of this leadership style in the field of nursing and nursing roles will be discussed. Finally, how this philosophy can be utilized in my personal nursing practice and how the theory has sparked personal growth in myself as a leader will be examined. History of Servant Leadership The philosophy of servant leadership began with Robert K. Greenleaf in 1977. He first came about the idea of servant leadership while reading Journey to the East by Herman Hesse (Keith, 2016). This is a story of a group of travelers who were served by a man named Leo. He performed their menial chores and lifted their spirits with his song and his spirit (Keith, 2016). Leo disappeared one day, throwing the travelers into disarray (Keith, 2016). This ended the journey of the travelers. Many years later, one of the travelers saw Leo in a new job role– as the head of the order that once sponsored the journey (Keith, 2016). Once a servant, ... • 11. School Philosophy Of Leadership Leadership Philosophy "Effective leadership is getting other people motivated enough to follow your lead or goal." Above you see my leadership philosophy summed into one sentence. Within any community education is the top priority. A school must encourage greatness and loathe mediocrity. The school needs a supportive environment that establishes high expectations and achievement amongst its students. The school community needs to provide support that fosters high standards and expectations. School leaders are instrumental in making the school successful. Relationships are built through conversations in hallways, cafeterias, and athletic fields. Caring, compassion and empathy are cornerstones to a meaningful educational relationship. Life long learning is key to any educational position. An administrator needs to aware of not remaining stagnant. The need to learn new ideas, research the latest trends, and be aware of the latest case studies are all important in running a school. Professional development is vital to teacher effectiveness. It should be meaningful and helpful. Professional development should include information on the changing role of the teacher, the latest developments in the area of instruction, and reflective practice techniques to assist teachers in self– improvement. Good staff development will help teachers address the diverse needs of their students and help to improve their professional skills. These are my beliefs, and my plan of action in becoming an effective administrator. • 13. Personal Leadership Philosophy My Personal Leadership Philosophy My definition of leadership My father once told me that, "everything we do– be it in academia, at work, social or family life–we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life." I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led. In my opinion the term leadership is a very broad and various definitions are given by authors. One definition of leadership is that it is " the process of developing and communicating a vision for the future, motivating people and gaining their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peters( 2001) argues that honesty is key to the relationship between a leader her followers. Stating that people tend to follow those that they trust and believe have individual's interests at heart. I concur with Peters, once trust ceases to exists the leader loses credibility with her followers. This could lead to a complete breakdown in communication and subordinates shunning the leader. In an organization, I feel a leader also acts as a translator and mediator between top management and lower levels. I believe a leader has the responsibility to be a filter and translates relevant information from top management to lower level staff, and vice versa. As such there will be instances where the leader will have to act as a sieve to filter necessary information that is relevant to lower levels, which may be viewed as omission of truth by subordinates. However in an organization not all information should be privy to everyone and the leader has to have the sense to be a buffer of information. Leadership at its core is based on a relationship between a leader and followers, once the group loses respect for their leader and perceive them to be dishonest this could potentially have a negative impact on the organisation as a whole. Honesty especially in the media industry where we are bound by codes of ethics, and policies is important. An unethical leader could bring the whole organization to disrepute, in an industry where credibility and integrity are essential. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Treat everyone that you encounter with respect regardless of their rank, background or ethnicity. Care for all as though they are your family because in reality they are. Ensure that you incorporate the Army values on a day to day basis. Respect is a key value. A leader must and should give respect if they want it from their subordinates. A leader on the other hand is one who help/facilitates the people, take risk and envision a better future for his group, encourages commitment and helps people move ahead along the path to accomplish a goal. • 19. My Leadership Philosophy Of Leadership Every individual has his or her own definition of leadership. In order to develop my leadership philosophy, I needed to describe leadership in my own words. Simply put, leadership is taking ownership, setting a positive example, and motivating those in your unit to follow your lead. In addition to understanding leadership, the USAF core values and personal experiences have helped shape my leadership philosophy: Moral courage – commitment to achieving organizational greatness through teamwork, caring, and trust. Since childhood, my family, peers, superiors, and subordinates have influenced my values, beliefs, and principles turning me into the person I am today. In addition to the core values, personal experiences throughout my Air Force career have shaped my leadership philosophy, mainly through the observation of different leaders. Hence, my upbringing, the USAF core values, and personal experiences have laid the foundation for my leadership philosophy. I will discuss in the succeeding paragraphs those leadership traits essential to my leadership philosophy. Moral courage is the bedrock of my leadership philosophy. Merriam–Webster defines courage as the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. In other words, moral courage means to make the right decisions for the greater good of the unit. Doing the right thing takes moral courage, especially if the action the leader is taking is unpopular. This may even include risking your career to stay true to your own values and beliefs. One example that reinforces the importance of moral courage is that of Col H.R. McMaster during his time in Iraq when he made a profound impact on Army tactics. Although his superiors did not agree with him, he stayed true to his values to fix the broken process. However, it came at the expense being passed over twice for promotion. It comes down to putting the unit before yourself. Col John Boyd once said, "To be somebody or to do something." His words have resonated with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Perhaps I always looked up to my leaders and believed they were constantly setting a new standard in the Army. As I progress as a Noncommissioned Officer, I regularly assess my leadership skills. Through my years in as a soldier in the Army, I have compiled my own leadership philosophy. I believe in establishing a clear vision and sharing that vision with others so that they may fully comprehend and follow enthusiastically. The ability to provide objectives and ways to realize that vision will set the precedence to achieve success. I strongly encourage the emphasis on being an organized leader. Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through coaching or mentoring" (Ubben, 2017). My thoughts will focus on what is achievable even when things seem difficult to move forward. A genuine leader knows how to be flexible when it comes to their crew, able to distinguish each individual's strengths, and capable to motivate and reassure the team to succeed. I will lead by example and give my best in whatever I partake in. It is important for soldiers to recognize that as a leader I will not participate for the sake of contributing. A leader should actively engage themselves in activities that involves soldiers instead of being a spectator. I believe leaders who participate in activities with their soldiers tend to gain more respect from their soldiers. A leader with tangible goals in their leadership philosophy will keep everyone focused and lead everyone without any distractions. My expectations for my soldiers are to ensure they give their best in everything they do. In summary, my leadership philosophy defines who I am as an individual, soldier, and a leader. I strongly believe, "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent." (General Douglas MacArthur, n.d.) There exist infinite possible approaches to leadership, and there is not one single universal right. Throughout my career, I have encountered and taken note of the different leadership styles in my path and have come to realize that in order to be most effective, I must be adaptable to each unique circumstance. I have also formed my philosophy by taking into account what I consider to be toxic leadership styles. Toxicity leads to unapproachability and one cannot expect to successfully ensure the wellbeing of their subordinates if they do not feel comfortable discussing issues. The military, due to public outcry and societal pressures, changed its own policies to align with what is becoming commonplace in the United States. We, as leaders, must also understand no individual Soldier will be like the next. Every Soldier is a person, and they have all lived through different life experiences and have all come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. • 25. A Personal Leadership Philosophy The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don't pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner's Mate rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner's Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner's Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner's mates (9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner's Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact. 2. The foundation of my leadership philosophy is anchored by a few key influences. The two I will address here are polar opposites. By observing the theories, models and cases presented in Northouse, Kouzes and Posner textbooks, I was able to learn through the experience of others what a true leader should represent. While considering the strengths and weaknesses of each theory, I am able to implement a leadership style with an effective approach tailored to many different types of learners. In addition, witnessing both the triumphs and failures of various businesses and leadership styles, helped me confirm my personal stance and aspirations towards becoming a leader. By implementing what I have learned from the course and textbooks, I will address in this paper what specific leadership theories, styles and models have contributed to forming my own leadership philosophy. In addition, I will also define the values, qualities, strengths and weaknesses and ethical considerations that pertain to my stance on leadership. I believe that having the knowledge, and a clear understanding about the responsibilities of a leader will have a tremendous effect on the outcomes that such a leader is able to achieve. During one of my assignments as the team leader of a translation project, called "Scan Eagle", our team was tasked with translation of drone manuals for the Afghan National Army (ANA). This was a time sensitive project and it required a strong personnel and time management in order to have the product ready for the customer in a timely manner and free of errors. At the end of the first week, I noticed that some of my team members were not as productive as the rest. As a leader, I decided to talk to them and give them a chance to explain their lack of productivity in compresences to their peers. I also wanted to know why they were not able to deliver the quality product, which was clearly stated at the beginning to be the ultimate desired outcome of the project. I approached the situation in a calm manner and allowed the soldiers to elaborate on their shortcomings and how we could improve them. At the end of our session, I was able to identify their problem as a lack of proficiency in the target language. • 31. What Is Leadership Philosophy? What is leadership philosophy? According to Col William DeMarco, a leadership philosophy is similar to an organizational mission statement but on an individual level. "It lets people know what you expect, what you value, and how you will act; with the additional benefit of making the organization more productive like a compass it helps keep you, the leader, on course."1 This paper will cover three elements. I will begin by discussing my personal leadership philosophy and my opinion on "a boss vs. a leader". I will then provide a summary and an analysis of an interview I conducted with an Army battalion–level commander concerning his most challenging leadership issue. My personal leadership philosophy is, "Your duty title makes you a commander; your people will decide if you are a leader." Prior to becoming a commissioned officer, I was an enlisted member in the Air National Guard for 7 years. As a young follower, you begin to decide the traits you feel a good leader should possess. I feel that in order to be a good leader, you must first experience being a follower. You must lead by example and be fair to all of your subordinates. You should make your people feel like they have a purpose in your organization. Things such as simple as saying "we" instead of "I" and showing how to do things instead of demanding them to be done will help your people decide to follow you. This would be what I call a "leadership belief." Irwin says, "As with others we must vet these beliefs and root out any that are fundamentally untrue." (Irwin 2014) This subject may be one of the more important subjects in a person's life. In my very core I have beliefs, and these beliefs matter. When a leader has a belief or even a mistaken belief it is manifested in his behavior. Much like many lives today people want to put their lives into compartments. Such was a belief of the engineers of the Titanic. • 35. My Leadership Philosophy : My Philosophy Of Leadership INTRODUCTION My leadership philosophy is very simple and can be compared to the simplicity of the lifecycle of a tree. A seed forms into a sapling which in turn grows into a mature, majestic, vibrant–full representation of those leaders who have contributed to their development and growth process on their journey to become leaders. Seems very simple when put in to those terms, however, each of these processes are very complex and need everyone's input, attention and examples; both good and bad, leadership to build on their own style. Leadership is a lifecycle and ever evolving! Leadership defined in my own words is having the ability to create an environment where everyone has the chance to thrive and learn from each other both positively and negatively. I certainly do not know everything there is to know about being a good leader, but I am confident and comfortable in my own area of expertise. I am a mature tree that falls in a row amongst many other trees. I have worked for horrible leaders and great leaders throughout my career. I have learned so much from both types and have taken, what I feel, the best from each one to grow my own style. I don't honestly feel that there is another one of me or my leadership style running around. I am unique. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS My leadership behaviors are very much systematic in the way I handle situations. I see where it is that I have failed my peeps, I try to find those new innovative ways to re–engage and improve. This behavior in the tree world is called moving the nutrients beneath the bark to the areas that need the food to grow. Sometime I have a tendency to focus on the easy routes (roots) that will give me the most bang for my buck and overlook those personnel that are wasting my time. No matter what I do or say there will be those few who just are not worth the investment in growth (pruning). I know I need to really single those individuals out that are performing well above their rank but at the moment I only have a select few who have gone above and beyond and have been recognized but there are those few with small accomplishments that if I took the time to say something to them directly as it happened it may speak volumes. Simply put, I believe leadership is the balancing of two competing priorities, the accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the people that are in your charge. Others can probably think up a million of other subcategories that go into defining leadership, but I believe those are the two over arching things a leader has to do. That is not to say that Loyalty has to be earned, and given to the follower, and the organization. And then there is fairness. My idea of fairness is more of an "old school" idea of fairness. • 45. The Philosophy Of Leadership And Leadership 1. Leadership is defined on Merriam–Webster.com as "the power or ability to lead other people". This definition is weak at best. Throughout my career, I have witnessed this form of leadership applying control of power, simply leading by giving direction, guidelines and instruction. There never seemed to be any care for if they were actually inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps. This seems counterproductive at best. In my experience, I have found that I always worked harder for and trusted more in a leader who I was able to connect with, admire, or look up to. Recognition from an admired leader inspired me to do more. So my philosophy on leadership is: Inspire those around you by respecting them, giving recognition, coaching and finally lead by example. 2. The philosophy of leadership I strive for can be defined as inspirational in type. One of the greatest things about this philosophy style is that it creates trust among everyone. When I was a young seaman on the Coast Guard Cutter Sedge, I was not among this idealized example of inspirational leadership. We were often broken down by superiors with derogatory name calling or negative motivation. At no time during my 2 years aboard can I remember a time when I admired the leadership. Much like a timeline that includes a past present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don't pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? A Theoretical Philosophy of Leadership WHAT IS LEADERSHIP Leadership is about the relationship and utilization of influence in various communication forms applied in a process that allows individuals and groups to work together to achieve collaborative goals (Ziegler & Degrosky, 2008). If influence is the driver of leadership, then power, is the engine. Having influence and power alone is insufficient to create leadership much like having a driver and a vehicle do not automatically create transportation. The duty to overcome moral and ethical dilemmas requires recognition of pitfalls and hazards and anticipation of unforeseen ones (Morrison, 2001). For example, in grade school, there always seems to be clicks, large and small groups of people that cling together. When we examine these social sub–groups, we often find that there is always one person that leads the group. This person is usually the person that brings the group together. I remember being in social circles with people that I knew I would never be friends with. However, we may have one or two people in common, thus we remain friends. Overtime, we ... • 73. Nursing Leadership Philosophy "Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal" (Kruse, 2003). Being a leader is not only about having followers and finishing set goals but also about working well with others while inspiring them. Effective leaders are essential to guide others to success, whether it's about inspiring others, having a vision or making a change. In order to attempt to develop a personal philosophy of leadership, I believe it is significant to examine what is essential to me as a leader. Throughout my nursing career I have encountered all types of leaderships from authoritarian to laissez–faire styles. I recently switched jobs and unknowingly I embarked in the search for leadership balance. What do I mean by this? I was searching for a place where I would be able to voice my concerns, where effective communication is present at all times, where my vision and passion for my nursing care will be taking into consideration and rewarded. • 75. Personal Leadership Philosophy Of Leadership I believe a personal leadership philosophy is developed through experiences as both a follower and a leader. Leadership skills are gained in many ways such as learning from the successful methods and mistakes of others, constructive criticism from followers and leader colleagues alike and remaining current in leadership literature. I have developed my theory based on personal encounters with positive and negative leadership experiences which include leading by example, listening and adapting to your followers needs and lastly, including followers in times of significant change. I believe that leading by example is a vital tenet of leadership. Johnson (2015) found that when a police field supervisor proactively engaged in investigative work, the volume of same work performed by their patrol officers doubled (p. 238). Johnson (2015, p. 237) also found that the supervisors had to only engage in one or two of these proactive activities in order to spark the patrol officers to conduct extra investigative work. I believe that if you want a specific result from your followers such as working more efficiently, improving their skills or showing initiative in the workplace you must do the same so they do not feel that they are merely picking up your slack. When a leader is contributing towards the common goal it makes the leader a member of the team and not just the task manager. My second position on leadership is that a leader's style depends on their followers and situation at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since everyone is invested in each other because they trust one another, any task will be accomplished. However when there is no trust within the team mistakes happen and missions fail.
