Japanese Militarism
Japanese Militarism The recent spat between Japan and China is the latest in a series of outbursts
between the two nations. What started as a Chinese objection to Japanese interpretation of history
especially with reference to the latter's acts against China during the fourth quarter of the 19th
century and the first half of the 20th century, has now snowballed into a major controversy which
could threaten the fragile relationship between them. The current episode started simmering when
the Chinese began circulating an online petition protesting against Japan's bid for a permanent seat
at the UN Security Council. A series of violent protest rallies were held in many Chinese cities. The
protestors stoned vital Japanese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mountainous topography characterises most of the land. Coupled with this was the problem of the
rapidly increasing population, which drove the militarists to go in search of new lands. Raw
materials: During the Meiji Era, Japan witnessed industrialisation, which gave impetus for the
modernisation of Japan. The scarcity of raw materials for the industrial units made the Japanese
rulers search for lands which could provide the raw materials and in turn, stimulate the economy.
This need for raw materials fanned the fires of Militarism. Markets for the finished goods: The
search for the protected markets is one of the most potent reasons for the rise of Japanese Militarism
and imperialism. Japan had achieved industrial and economic progress to an extent that she needed
protected markets for the consumption of Japanese goods without any fear of competition. A rapidly
growing population, the need to secure raw materials and the search for protected markets all made
Japan begin the campaign to search for colonies. In the beginning, Japanese could settle in the vast
lands of USA. But soon their entry and settlement were capped with irksome rules and regulations.
The Monroe June 2005 4 Doctrine also barred the Japanese from entering into America. Further,
Britain, France, Russia, The Netherlands, and Germany had established a firm foothold in different
parts of Africa and Asia. All these factors made

Manchuria Chapter Summary
Marta Hanson's book, Speaking of Epidemics in Chinese Medicine, details the great importance of
separating China into northern and southern regions. The Kangxi Emperor of Manchuria, who ruled
from 1662–1772, stressed that the differences in soil, food, and climate dramatically influenced the
health of the people that resided either north or south of the Great Wall. In consequence, many of
Manchuria' public health policies were subjective to what Hanson calls geographic imaginations.
The following insert will elaborate on the following: explain the concept of actor's category in
relation to geographic imaginations, focus on the case of small pox, and look at how geographic
imaginations relate to health policy management and even segregation.
In this text, the thinking term, geographic imaginations, is an actor's category, which is another
meaning for analytical concepts. To decipher the phrase, what is geographic and imagined?
Geographic regions of China and Manchuria were imagined to be physically different from each
other. The Manchu understood, or perhaps imagined, that northern ... Show more content on

Besides the physical distinction of the North and South, the presence of small pox increased the
separation. Manchuria has a relatively low population density compared to the Han population
China at the time, which made small pox in Manchuria rare. The Manchu also did not develop the
antibodies for their bodies to fight small pox. As a result, the Manchu deeply feared possible
contagion of small pox. Preventative measures were taken so far that the prince was isolated in
shelter to keep the disease away, military were trepid in setting foot on China's grounds, and people
who contacted the small pox were ordered to leave the city. The fear was so deeply ingrained into
the minds of the Manchu that it was no surprise that what came next was

How did the Manchurian Crisis and its results affect militarism in Japan?
Part A: Plan of Investigation
Through early 1930's Japan was facing difficult economic times and conflict pertaining to the rights
that they believed were rightfully theirs. On The night of September 18, 1931 the Manchurian crisis
(Mukden Incident) took place. An explosion destroyed part of the Southern Manchurian railway
which was owned by the Japanese. After this incident Japan started to began to lean into militarism.
This event was a huge turning point for the country of japan as a whole. To what extent did the

The Treaty Of Versailles And The Great Depression
After the First World War, Europe was left in turmoil; tensions between nations were high and
desperation for peace was growing. On January 10, 1920, the League of Nations was officially
created as the Treaty of Versailles was generated. It was created with essentially two main goals: to
keep peace via collective security, and to encourage international co–operation. It was produced
with the idea that if one nation was attacked by another, the members of the League would act
together to stop the assailant. Members of the League desired to begin a new arrangement of
international relations that would assure an enduring state of peace based on a true mindset of
forgiveness and compromise. Although member states were originally ... Show more content on

Japan's aggressive government was controlled by the military, and acted belligerently towards other
nations. In 1931, China was in control of Manchuria, but Japan ruled the railway that ran through. In
September 1931, after the Manchurian railway was destructed, Japan placed direct blame on the
Chinese. In retaliation, the Japanese invaded Manchuria and created an independent state. China
looked to the League for aid, which sent a commission to investigate the situation. However, the
commission did not reach Manchuria until April 1932 and did not even report until that October.
This response was clearly way too slow, making it much harder for the League to further enforce its
ruling. The commission reported that Japan was the aggressor, and the League later voted for
Japanese troops to leave Manchuria. Japan walked out on the meeting and refused to leave
Manchuria. The League could not agree on economic sanctions or any bans, proving its weakness
and inability to handle problems. In 1933, Japan removed itself from the League of Nations and
continued to expand and build its empire. Although Japan is often regarded as the sole aggressor in
this situation, many forget the hopelessness of people during this time. Japan may have acted
aggressively, but only aimed to expand and acquire resources for its people just as European nations
have been doing for centuries. The

As Japan Joined The Global Community, Its Leaders Realized
As Japan joined the global community, its leaders realized that in order for Japan to achieve the
same successes as the Western powers, it needed to emulate the methods of the West. Notably, Japan
sought to acquire colonial land holdings, in part because Japan lacked many natural resources of its
own, but also to be on the same playing field as the Western powers who held many colonies,
especially in Asia and the Pacific. Using the Western powers actions in China and Japan with the
Unequal Treaties, as well as their actions in other Asian countries, Japan tried to justify their
imperialism in Asia by stating they were trying to protect Asia from Western influences and to
promote Pan–Asianism. Just like some Western powers have done, the ... Show more content on

As a result, many Japanese industries expanded into Manchuria with the help of the Japanese
government, who desired the concept of fukoku kyōhei, which aimed to increase Japan's economic
and military power. World War I presented Japan a great opportunity to further two of its primary
goals: propagating the idea of Pan–Asianism under Japanese rule, and acquiring natural resources
for its growing industries. By allying with Britain and America, Japan could seize many imperial
holdings of Germany and its allies for itself, as well as sell their military goods to the Western allies.
Due to Japan's support of the winning side of the war and its inclusion in the League of Nations,
they had recognition from the Western powers that their new colonies were legitimate. As heard
from the many first–hand stories of people in these newly acquired territories, the Pan–Asianism
Japan espoused was nothing more than a ruse, and Japan would act much the same as the previous
Western rulers. Outwardly, Japan claimed that its imperial actions in Asia were to benefit all Asian
people, and to promote Pan–Asianism in the face of Western imperial influence. However, this was
mostly a guise by the militarists in Japan, who wanted a united Asia under the control of Japan. The
ultimate plan of the military government was for hakkō ichiu, or all the world under one roof, which
implied that Japan would conquer the

Essay on America's Open Door Policy
The Open Door Policy is a term in outside issues at first used to allude to the United States strategy
in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century sketched out in Secretary of State John
Hay's Open Door Note, dispatched in 1899 to his European partners. The arrangement proposed to
keep China open to exchange with all nations on an equivalent premise; hence, no global force
might have aggregate control of the nation. The strategy called upon outside forces, inside their
effective reaches, to shun meddling with any bargain port or any vested enthusiasm, to allow
Chinese powers to gather levies on an equivalent support, and to show no favors to their own
particular nationals in the matter of harbor duty or railroad charges. ... Show more content on

As a reaction, William Woodville Rockhill detailed the Open Door Policy in intend to protecting
American business chances and different hobbies in China. In September 6, 1899, U.s. Secretary of
State John Hay sent notes to the significant forces, such as France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan,
and Russia, requesting that them announce formally that they might maintain Chinese regional and
managerial trustworthiness and might not meddle with the free utilization of the bargain ports inside
their authoritative reaches in China. The Open Door Policy expressed that all countries, including
the United States, could revel in equivalent access to the Chinese market.
In answer, every nation attempted to avoid Hay's appeal, taking the position that it couldn't submit
itself until alternate countries had consented. In any case, by July 1900, Hay proclaimed that each of
the forces had allowed consent on a fundamental level. In spite of the fact that settlements made
after 1900 allude to the Open Door Policy, rivalry around the different forces for extraordinary
concessions inside China for railroad rights, mining rights, advances, remote exchange ports, etc.,
proceeded unabated.
In 1902, the United States government dissented that Russian infringement in Manchuria after the
Boxer Rebellion was a violation of the Open Door Policy. The point

Psycho-American War
The Russo–Japanese war began on February 8th, 1904 when the Japanese launched a surprise attack
on the Russian fleet and ended September 5th, 1905 with the treaty of Portsmouth led by Theodore
Roosevelt. The war had a substantial effect on both of its participants, the Russians and the
Japanese, but first this essay will talk about the events leading up to it, such as the Russian
encroachment. In 1898 the Chinese and Russians finally negotiated a convention after three months
by which china would lease to Russia Port Arthur in Talianwan, a tremendously strategic point
which would be Russia's sole warm water port on the coast of the pacific, and its surrounding
waters. Immediately after their agreement, Russia took no time in occupying the Port. A year later,
Russia began to build the southern Manchurian railroad to further consolidate their position at Port
Arthur. The building of the railroad led to be one of the causes of the Boxer rebellion. Because of
the Boxer rebellion, the uprising of a secret organization in china against the spread of western and
Japanese influence there, the Russians and Japanese had both contributed troops along with Britain,
Austria–Hungary, The United States, India, Germany, France, and Italy to quell the uprisings and to

How Did Japan Invade America
The Invasion and Conquest of Manchuria
1931–1933
By George Litsas, Jacob Nastasi, Louis Nicholls, Tom Laird and Jarrah Lindhout
The Invasion of Manchuria started on September 19, 1931, when Japanese forces elected to invade
the Chinese territory of Manchuria.
Causes:
There were numerous factors that led to Japan invading Manchuria. In 1929, the Great Depression
struck Japan hard. The civilian government looked weak in the eyes of the army, and the population
looked to the military for strength. Army generals were admired by much of the population,
especially amongst the homeless, and were seen to be far more influential than the politicians at the
time. Due to economic weakness, army generals preached that they should look to invade ... Show

An Assembly was held in February 1933, with 40 nations voting that Japan should withdraw. Only
Japan voted against it, however instead of agreeing with what the League had decided, Japan left it
entirely. The League could do nothing to stop Japan. Verbal warnings obviously were ineffective, as
Japan had simply chosen to ignore them. Trade sanctions were not an option, as no country wanted
to cut off ties with Japan during the Depression. If a nation did give up trading with Japan, another
country would willingly start trade with them.
Military engagement was also not an option, as no country had the capacity to do so. Tony Howarth
wrote, "the League was powerless in the face a determined aggressor."
Many cartoons were also released highlighting the situation. The one to the right was drawn by
cartoonist David Low in 1933 . Low was British, and disappointed in the acts of the League.

How Did The Manchurian Plague Affect Politics
In October 1910, a mysterious plague broke out in Manchuria, causing great terror due to its
exceptional communicability. This Manchurian plague had unprecedented characteristic. In other
word, this plague was pneumonic plague. Being a complete novelty, this plague had a crucial effect
on medicine and politics in China.
First, turning to the effect on medicine, this plague was the beginning of the infectious disease in
China. It is true that Chinese term chuanran was regularly used. However, in the concept of
chuanren, epidemic disease were transmitted by local qi entering people's bodies through the nostrils
and mouth. In other words, the Chinese did not know infectious disease, that is, an acute and
widespread epidemic that was transmitted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wu established the concept of infectious disease in China. He observed the novel fact by
microscope that bacillus pestis found exclusively in the victim's lung. This meant that not local qi
but this bacilli caused Manchurian plague and that this bacilli were transmitted directly thorough
person–to–person contact. Due to this discovery and the real experience of those who were
physically involved with handling the sick, people became convinced of the contagious nature of
Manchurian plague. Thus, Chinese first recognized infectious disease, thorough coping with
Manchurian plague.
Then, turning to the effect on politics, geopolitical context in Manchuria was important. In those
days, Japan and Russia were trying to gain sovereignty over Manchuria and they would use plague
containment as an excuse their influence over Manchuria. Therefore, it was necessary for Qing to
take initiative in coping with Manchurian plague.
Again, Dr. Wu's said discovery played a crucial role. This discovery was a scientific victory over
Japan and Russia that were only concerned about rats and bubonic plague. Thanks to this victory,
Dr. Wu served as chairman of the International Plague Conference and Qing was able to take
initiative, moreover, sovereignty over Manchuria. Thus, Manchurian plague resolved the
sovereignty struggle over

Introduction: Body: 1. Why was the attack planned? According to Source B, the attacks had been
slowly brewing for years. It started when Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, in northern China.
(source B) As the Japanese aggression increased, its relations with the US deteriorated. Japan had a
need for the establishment of heavy and light industries (in occupied Manchuria). (source B) She

Military success and inherent sense of racial superiority led Japan to believe that it deserved to

resources. (Source C) The embargo was the loss of oil. Unless Japan could import the oil it need, its

The Factors and Objectives The Russo Japanese War
1. The Russo Japanese War began on February 8, 1904 and lasted until 5 September, 1905. The
majority of the conflict was conducted within the region of Manchuria, however, several naval
battles occurred within the Yellow Sea as well as in Tsushima Strait (the sea area between the
southeastern Korean Peninsula and the southwestern portion of Japan).
2. The principle parties in this war were the Russian and Japanese Empires. While various aspects of
the Chinese Empire played their roles in the lead–up to the conflict they did not, however, side with
either of the two warring Empires during the war. Russia did have an alliance of sorts with France
and Germany, however, this advantage in numbers was negated due to Japan's formal alliance with
Great Britain, who declared support for Japan should a third party become involved in a conflict.
3. The main theme for the context of this war was Russian and Japanese simultaneous determination
to develop spheres of influence in eastern Asia, primarily within the nation of China and specifically
within the region of Manchuria. This sense of determination found Meiji Japan fighting the Chinese
Qing Dynasty during the Sino Japanese War over control of Korea, which was a Chinese tributary
state. This war lasted from 1894–1895 and concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

Manchuria And Russia In The Mid-1930's
Introduction The mid–1930's was an extremely turbulent time in the Far East. The Soviets and
Japanese had been at each other's throats since the Russo–Japanese War from 1904 to 1905. The
Treaty of Portsmouth ended the war in September 1905, which had given the Japanese South
Manchuria and gave them the lease on the Liaotung Peninsula. This important because the Japanese
would create the Kwantung Army to defend this area. "The number of regular troops Japan might
station in the Kwantung Territory was not stipulated by treaty, but the initial strength of the
Kwantung Garrison amounted to two regular army divisions and fortress units stationed at Port
Arthur and Dairen." The Japanese were going to defend their newly acquired territory with this
sizeable force. The Japanese also benefitted from World War I because they were able to put more
forces into Manchuria and they were able to get concessions from China, which gave them more
control over Manchuria. The Japanese had control over this part of the world. The Japanese would
also attempt again to take advantage of a great situation. In 1917, the Russian tsar collapsed and
plunged Russia into civil war and revolution and they were able to capture most of Manchuria. The
Japanese were invited to the Washington armament conference of 1921, but it was because the Allies
from World War I were trying to take away the land acquired by the Japanese. The Japanese had
agreed to give up the Shantung province and withdrew

How Did Manchuria Occur
World War II In 1919, at the end of the Great War, the Big Four; the US, Great Britain, France, and
Italy, were trying to figure out where to lay the blame. Great Britain and France wanted Germany to
take all of the blame, which in turn would make it a very weak nation. The United States on the
other hand did not want to blame anyone. The US, Great Britain, and France came up with the
Treaty of Versailles. The United States came up with the League of Nations, but Britain and France
were able to lay all of the blame on Germany, crippling them beyond repair, or so they thought.
Since Germany took all the blame they felt the need for revenge, thus starting the territorial take

Essay On Manchu
The Current Situation and Protection of Manchu
The Manchu is the language of the Man people (also called Manchu people) originated in northeast
China. Manchu was one of the official languages together with Chinese in the Qing Dynasty
(1644AD–1912AD). Due to its own demerit in expressing and other social political reasons,
nowadays there is only less than 100 people that still take Manchu as their native language.

American Imperialism : The Japanese Attack At Pearl Harbor...
American imperialism in the 1800s was the primary cause of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor
Hawaii. When Millard Fillmore sent Commodore Matthew Perry to open ports of trade in Japan the
clock began ticking as to when Japan and America would go to war against each other. Perry's show
of modern military armaments sent the nation that was controlled by a feudal warlord the Shogun
into a state of chaos, and the eventual forced removal of the Shogunate. The subsequent infusion of
militarism and modernism in Japan culture led to a need for raw material. America was a premier
producer of oil and trade between the two nations was established. Germany and Great Britain
supplied Japan with military training and equipment. Japan traded for scrap metals of all types,
which they smelted into high–grade steel as they began to create their own modern military.
However, America could not supply Japan with all of their needs and wants, therefore Japan
embarked on their version of imperialism.
They attacked China, Manchuria, fought with Russia in the Russo–Japanese war, took control of
Korea, and once again attacked China. Soon, they required more raw materials as the West began to
take notice of Japans rising status in the Far East. They were an ally during WWI, but soon after the
war, they sought more independence, a release from what they considered unequal trade agreements,
and more autonomy. Dutch and British concerns over their oil reserves in the East Indies became an

men and women were asked to work in factories. A major focus on military weapons and
advancement took place in Japan as well (Doc 2). This quick and effective development in
technology for war, allowed Japan to defeat Russia, and protect itself from external attack. It also
facilitated the process of imperialism. Russia on the other hand, was more focused on increase in
mining and metal industries (Doc 6). Mining was a major source of income in Russia, as it became a
good that was exported. Its mass production capacity, allowed a multitude of exportation. Russia
was not solely dependent on mining, but was also dependent on its natural resources (Doc 6).
Natural resources such as tobacco were being manufactured and sold (Doc 7). Japan was dependent

Effects Of New Imperialism In China
New Imperialism started China's downward spiral. Europeans, British, and Americans made a mad
dash to claim new territories. The main goals of these countries were to supply their countries with
raw materials to fuel their economic growth. Benefits to occupied countries were determined by
which country and what faction of that country occupied the territory.
During this time period Britain took over India. They began growing opium and tea. Tea happened
to be a major export of China. India would eventually replaced China as the main exporter of tea.
Japan would also eventually start competing with China for the silk and tea industry. This lead to a
weakening of the Chinese economy. Opium that was grown legally in India was now being

When the British wanted to re–open trade with China, and they wanted a european style diplomatic

After this war China was forced into signing a treaty and trade agreements. China being displeased
with the treaty, refused to have Foreign Diplomates in the capital and the expansion of trade fell
short of the western expectations. In 1856–1860. Thousands of foreign troop occupied the capital

The Events That Contributed To The Bombing Of Hiroshima
The events that contributed to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki all built up to the drastic
effects the bombing had on Japan. Pearl harbour was a catalyst to the bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in the way that it built up the feud between America and Japan. These events shaped the
course of Japan for many years to come. The bombings having a destructive effect that will forever
leave a permanent scar on Japanese history. The events that led to this destruction include the
invasion of Manchuria, Japans reliance on foreign trade as well as the Japanese attack on Pearl

However, by Japan taking this course it isolated them leaving them with no alternatives for natural
resources and funds from other countries than to turn to the bigger players in the global scheme,
such as America and Germany. This ultimately led to disruptions in relationships between America
and other allied countries due to Japans exit of the League of Nations. The consequence of Japans
aggressive expansion into China forced America's hand to cut off trade embargo of the resources
essential to Japan such as oil, steel, rubber which the military relied on. This inevitably sparked the
Japanese determination to stand their ground against foreign forces, which they have historical had a
reputation for being a fearsome and determined country. This is clearly evident in the Pearl harbour
attack demonstrating that they were a forced to be reckoned with. The surprise attack on the Pacific
fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 outraged the whole U.S. nation convincing America that
the Japanese army and navy must be stopped. The invasion of Manchuria was a pivotal point leading
towards the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the build– up of the tension between
America and Japan. The minor engagement between the Chinese and Japanese troops conclusively
led to undeclared war between the two nations. With China torn apart by revolution in the 1920s,

Essay on Origin of the Chinese Triads
Although in modern times, the Triads are mostly associated with criminal activity, they originated as
mutual support organizations for people at the bottom of the social hierarchy and to defend the
common people from those of positions in power "to offer unacquainted people the kind of
protection and mutual aid normally afforded by family members" (Murray 178). How they
began has been agreed back and forth for many years and lots of theories have come up. However it
is generally accepted that the Triads were established during the fall of the Ching dynasty, even
thought there are some that argue that the Triads date as back as the Han dynasty. It is also accepted

Many of the men that established the Triads were once soldiers for the Imperial Army of the Ming
Dynasty, but when the Ming surrendered to the Manchurian invaders, the survivors of the wars
¡§formed small pockets of armed resistance¡¨ (Liu 21). However they were forced to go
underground because the newly established Ching rulers were really harsh and stated that those not
loyal to the Ching will be executed (Liu 22). On the other hand, after the Emperor to set ¡§300 of his

monks that survived also had to go into hiding in order to found secret societies dedicated to
overthrowing the Ching dynasty (wReflexes).
The cause for the establishment of the Triads is different for each theory, one is out of personal gain
and the other is for the country. The underground rebellions founded by the monks were out of
revenge. They were rebelling against the Ching for the death of their brothers and for the burning of
the monastery. Their motives were very personal, whereas according to the first theory, the people
established the secret societies for the good of China, thinking that the Ching rulers, being foreign,
should not rule China and thus set up the rebellions and upheaval as to drive the foreign power out.
The two theories were all aiming to vanquish a common enemy but their cause for

In Taoism, each timing stands for a particular star. For example, one maybe born in the 23rd Feb, at
3pm. Each of this timings, 23rd Feb and 3pm, can be linked to a particular star and these stars will
affect one's destiny and character in time to come. Thus, stars are exceptionally important in Taoism
as it directly affects the wellbeing of humans.
There was a book, 《星经》 the Book of Stars. The author of this book was not recorded and it
should be written around the Han dynasty. In this book, it was written that the Big Dipper was in
charge of the Emperor's destiny and longevity.
During the Jin Dynasty, the status of Taoism rose through the ranks amongst other religions and
philosophy. This is due to the literature culture during the Wei Jin Dynasty. 玄学 flourished thus
causing Taoism to be of a certain status in that period of time. During this period of time, Taoism
conveyed the idea and importance of the Big Dipper. In 《晋书。天文志》, which means under the

Impact Of Imperialism In Korea
Japanese Imperialism in Korea and Korea's Police/Military Era "As I stood on a mountain pass,
looking down on the valley leading to Inch'Con, I recalled these words of my friend. The Ôstrong
hand of Japan' was certainly being shown here. I beheld in front of me village after village reduced

not a single wall of a house." (F.A Mackenzie). Japan did many brutal and harsh things while
colonizing Korea. Imperialism is when another nation forcefully takes control of another nation. In
the 19th and 20th century, many European powers were trying to get colonies in countries in Africa

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese launched an air raid on Pearl Harbor. It came as
a complete and utter surprise to the Americans. It started at 7 AM on a Sunday morning. Two United
States Army privates were just getting done with their shift when they saw something on their radar.
They immediately called the information center on the other side of the island. They reached an
army lieutenant. The lieutenant assured them that it was just a fleet of American B–17s. This was a
major mistake made during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Carefully, Japanese aircraft flew through the
mountains of Oahu avoiding radar detection. The attack started at 7:58 AM. Forty–three fighters,
fifty–one dive–bombers, forty–nine high–level bombers, and forty torpedo bombers attacked Pearl
Harbor killing thousands of men and injuring thousands more and sunk or damaged eighteen United
States warships. It so happened, that at the time of the attack, all three of the Pacific Fleet's aircraft

Compare And Contrast Manchuria And Russia
1904 was when the Russo–Japanese War started and it ended in 1905. Japan ended up on top and
this forced Russia to stop its expansion in the far east. The war started out as a fight between Russia
and Japan over Korea and Manchuria. Russia had forced China into giving them land at the tip of
the Liaotung Peninsula, in Manchuria. Russia had also made an alliance with China against Japan.
However Japan had started expanding its army after their war with China. Now Japan had more
ground troops than Russia. Russia had agreed to withdraw its troops from Manchuria. This was
when Japan took its chance and attacked. The last naval battle had given the Japanese the upper
hand and given them full command of the sea. In the end both financially and politically exhausted
countries came together to make peace. President Theodore Roosevelt was the mediator and Russia
had to give up its place in the Manchuria Peninsula and it was restored to China; Japan had won

Are Manchurian and Outer Mongolia Sovereign States?
Introduction In the following paragraphs will prove that Manchurian is not a sovereign state while
Outer Mongolia is. Declarative theory and constitutive theory will be used for explanation. Attitude
of China towards the two cases will be discussed and finally will be the conclusion. Manchurian
Declarative theory Manchurian seems can fulfill the conditions of statehood in terms of declaratory
theory. But actual practice implicates she cannot fulfill the conditions. Declaratory theory refers to
the Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention on Rights and Duties of States. It stated that a state has
permanent population, defined territory, government and capacity to enter into legal relations (Shen,
2014). At that period, Manchuria had about 37 million permanent populations. She consisted of
about 1 million square kilometers of territory. It is formed by Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang
province (Zhang, 1985). For structure of the government, republic system is adopted. Puyi is the
leader. Before the establishment of Manchuria, the government was able to control the area
effectively. After the establishment, she was effective to exercise foreign policies. For example, she
built up diplomatic relationship with Japan and El Salvador. She was also capable to maintain
political order (Zhang, 1985). For the capacity to enter into legal relations, she was able to enter into
relations with other countries in the name of representative of Manchurian. There was no sovereign

Japan 's Attack On Pearl Harbor
Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor could have not happened if a Mongolian Cavalry had never crossed
the Manchurian Border in 1939. Just because of this small battle between Japan and Soviet Union,
Japan was compelled to attack Pearl Harbor in December 7, 1941. But this battle is the most
forgotten battle I have ever heard about. The battle of Khalkhin Gol was not even mentioned in the
History class when we learned about Pearl Harbor, even though it is related. In this paper, I will
cover how the battle began, the reasons why it began, the conflicts and battles fought between Japan
and Russia, the differences between Japan's and Russia's war tank technology, and how the battle
affected the Second World War.
From the beginning of the 1900s tension had grown between the Soviet Union and Japan after the
Russo–Japanese War. In 1904, the Soviet Union's empire and Japan's empire collided in their own
individual efforts take Manchuria, which is a part of China, and Korea(Young). Japan tried to talk
the Soviet Union into letting them take over Korea, so the Soviet Union could go capture
Manchuria. But the Soviet Union also wanted the northern part of Korea, so the Japanese
government declared war against the Soviet Union.
The Khalkhin Gol battle is closely related to the battles the Soviet Union and Japan fought before.
Like the conflicts the Soviet Union's puppet state Mongolia, known as Mongolians People's
Republic, and Japan's Manchukuo in Manchuria (Russo). The conflicts were

The Causes Of The Russo-Japanese War
The Russo–Japanese War developed out of the rivalry between Russia and Japan for control of
Korea and Manchuria. In 1898 Russia had pressured China into granting it a lease for the
strategically important port of Port Arthur. Russia thereby entered into occupation of the port.
Additionally, in 1896 Russia had concluded an alliance with China against Japan and, in the process,
had won rights to extend the Trans–Siberian Railroad Across Chinese–held Manchuria to the
Russian seaport of Vladivostok, thus gaining control of an important strip of Manchurian territory.
However, though Russia had built the Trans–Siberian Railroad, it still lacked the transportation
facilities necessary to reinforce its limited armed forces in Manchuria with sufficient men and
supplies. Japan, by contrast, had steadily expanded its army since its war with China in 1894 and by
1904 had gained a marked superiority over Russia in the number of ground troops in the Far East.
After Russia reneged in 1903 on an agreement to withdraw its troops from Manchuria, Japan
decided it was time to attack. The war began on February 8, 1904, when the main Japanese fleet
launched a surprise attack and siege on the Russian naval squadron at Port Arthur. In March the
Japanese landed an army in Korea that quickly overran that country. In May another Japanese army
landed on the Liaodong Peninsula, and on May 26 it cut off the Port Arthur garrison from the main
body of Russian forces in Manchuria. The Japanese then pushed

China has had a long and rich history that is not devoid of its fair share of revolutions and political
upheavals. It is these changes that have increasingly shaped the country into becoming one of the
major economic powers of the current decade. This has also given the country a greater standing
when considering the political influence that the country now enjoys in the global environment. One
may consider the period that span three decades from 1890 as having the greatest impact in the
trajectory that modern day has taken in the past and is going to take in the future. This period saw a
number of very significant changes both in ideology and belief that provided china with the

This was mainly due to the increasing weakness of the Qing dynasty to maintain control of the vast
region with increasing pressure from these western nations. This is both in regards to military might
and economic concerns. These two unique characteristics were responsible for the creation of an
environment of social uneasiness among the people in China.
In the consideration of the period between 1890s to the 1920s there are three major concerns that
will be part of the analysis. These three are the political, social and economic environments of china
during this period. This will include an analysis of the environments inherent characteristics at the
time, the role these characteristics played in the change that occurred at this time and how these
factors may have changed in themselves during this period. This consideration will be unified by
one main theme and this is the influence that external parties or concerns played in the shaping of
Chinese views, ideologies and actions during this period.
This theme is mainly cognizant of the fact that there was a great deal of foreign activity in china
during this time and that improvements in transport means had given many Chinese people the
opportunities to travel far and wide, aside from their traditional neighbors of Japan. It is also worth
mentioning that the consideration of these three factors will largely be as a unit as there were great

Japan's Surprise Attack On Pearl Harbor
2. There were several different events that led to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941. The events that led up to this attack were the occupation of Manchuria in 1931,
the invasion of remainder of China in 1937, the bombing of the American gunboat Punay on
December 1937 in China, the Invasion of Indochina in 1940, and U.S. Oil Embargo. The
occupations of Manchuria in 1931 was when the Japan's Army had invaded one of China's Northern

had invaded Manchuria was because the Japanese wanted to expand their empire by controlling
Chinese provinces. The Japanese were also short on resources and were in a depression while

Global depression on Japan's economy, and increased expansionism and militarism in Japan. One of
the earlier influences on Japan's decision to invade China was the effect of western imperialism.

The Era Of The Safavid Empire Under The Rule Of Shah Ismail
As a political tactic, rulers often portray themselves in a certain way in order to stabilize their reign
and rule more effectively. Some take the approach of uniqueness by setting themselves apart from
their subject population while others take the approach of sameness by emphasizing the similarities
in which they share with the people. Not exclusively limited to apartness or sameness, some rulers
have shown to employ a mix of both ruling styles. It is these versatile rulers who have experienced
more successes in their reign because they are not compelled to only one ruling style, allowing them
to better adapt to the needs of their ruling population. The apartness ruling style is best seen in the
Safavid Empire under the rule of Shah Ismail. Shah Ismail uses religion as a political tool to control
his state and does so by declaring Shi'ism, a smaller branch of Islam, as the state religion (#). After
separating himself & his people from those who are not willing to abide to his ideologies, Shah
Ismail can now demand the absolute loyalties from his subjects and persecute those who are deviant.
This radical act further creates a deep chasm between Shi'ite Muslims and nearby Sunni Muslims
neighbors. As a result, cultural flow and the exchange of beliefs between Sunni & Shi'ite states are
essentially hindered. Ismail's apartness ruling approach is taken to the extreme with social, religious,
and legal systems being strictly confined to Shi'ite doctrines (@). It is noted that

A Report On The Manchurian Crisis
On 18 September 1931, a bomb exploded near Mukden on the South Manchurian railway. There is
sufficient evidence to believe that the Japanese planted the bomb themselves to cause tension with
Chinese dissidents and justify their advancement into Manchuria. The Manchurian Crisis–arguably
the most important dispute brought forth to the League of Nations since its establishment in 1920–
had begun. As this incident was perceived as an act of aggression on the part of Japan, China
immediately appealed to the League of Nations for assistance. However, in the end, nothing

aggression during the Mukden Incident was ineffective. While most historians ... Show more content

Yet, because the League of Nations was inherently weak in its foundation, the organization "needed
the support of Great Britain and the United States" to effectively halt Japanese aggression (Sunoo

The Great Depression, which occurred in 1929, devastated the economy of many counties
worldwide, including Japan. Thus, many sought for imperialism as the answer, such as the Western
power and Japan. Japan targeted China, planning on taking advantage of the turmoil that was taking
place inside the country, greatly devastating the country by military power. Watching closely over
the feud between the Chinese Nationalists and Communists, Japan waited for the perfect

Sugihara moved on from the elite Harbin Gakuin, Japan's preparation focus for specialists on the

Why Did Japan Invade Russia
Japan Invades Manchuria
Name: Preethi Narayanan Class: World Civics
After the tremendous World War I the Japanese had successfully defeated Russia, in addition they
were considered the one and only industrialized country in the far east. The war between the
Russians and the Japanese had been caused because both the countries wanted to control Korea and
Manchuria. After Japan's war with China they had a much more new, evolved and superior army,
which is one cause for Russia to have lost the war. Although Japan was the true victor in World War
I by defeating Russia, she did not gain the much needed respect from the United States or Britain.
To make matters worse, Japan incurred heavy debt and financial burden from the war. When Russia
failed to pay the reparations to Japan, Japan could not undo the damage that had been done to their
economy. (Ben Pi et al. SS 20IB) To top it all off, "The United States started to segregate Asians in
California schools, and made it impossible for them to own land." (United States American History)

The aftermath of war with Russia led Japan into lacking essential raw materials, land, and a full
supply of food. (Ben Pi et al. SS 20IB) "Japan was an emerging industrial power in the early 20th
century, but lacked sufficient domestic supplies of iron and coal to sustain its desired development.
Japan, a nation of islands, believed that it was approaching its maximum density and had continued
to cast hungry glances at the Asian mainland as a potential target of expansion." (United States

Japanese Militarism

  • 1. Japanese Militarism Japanese Militarism The recent spat between Japan and China is the latest in a series of outbursts between the two nations. What started as a Chinese objection to Japanese interpretation of history especially with reference to the latter's acts against China during the fourth quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, has now snowballed into a major controversy which could threaten the fragile relationship between them. The current episode started simmering when the Chinese began circulating an online petition protesting against Japan's bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. A series of violent protest rallies were held in many Chinese cities. The protestors stoned vital Japanese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mountainous topography characterises most of the land. Coupled with this was the problem of the rapidly increasing population, which drove the militarists to go in search of new lands. Raw materials: During the Meiji Era, Japan witnessed industrialisation, which gave impetus for the modernisation of Japan. The scarcity of raw materials for the industrial units made the Japanese rulers search for lands which could provide the raw materials and in turn, stimulate the economy. This need for raw materials fanned the fires of Militarism. Markets for the finished goods: The search for the protected markets is one of the most potent reasons for the rise of Japanese Militarism and imperialism. Japan had achieved industrial and economic progress to an extent that she needed protected markets for the consumption of Japanese goods without any fear of competition. A rapidly growing population, the need to secure raw materials and the search for protected markets all made Japan begin the campaign to search for colonies. In the beginning, Japanese could settle in the vast lands of USA. But soon their entry and settlement were capped with irksome rules and regulations. The Monroe June 2005 4 Doctrine also barred the Japanese from entering into America. Further, Britain, France, Russia, The Netherlands, and Germany had established a firm foothold in different parts of Africa and Asia. All these factors made ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Manchuria Chapter Summary Marta Hanson's book, Speaking of Epidemics in Chinese Medicine, details the great importance of separating China into northern and southern regions. The Kangxi Emperor of Manchuria, who ruled from 1662–1772, stressed that the differences in soil, food, and climate dramatically influenced the health of the people that resided either north or south of the Great Wall. In consequence, many of Manchuria' public health policies were subjective to what Hanson calls geographic imaginations. The following insert will elaborate on the following: explain the concept of actor's category in relation to geographic imaginations, focus on the case of small pox, and look at how geographic imaginations relate to health policy management and even segregation. In this text, the thinking term, geographic imaginations, is an actor's category, which is another meaning for analytical concepts. To decipher the phrase, what is geographic and imagined? Geographic regions of China and Manchuria were imagined to be physically different from each other. The Manchu understood, or perhaps imagined, that northern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides the physical distinction of the North and South, the presence of small pox increased the separation. Manchuria has a relatively low population density compared to the Han population China at the time, which made small pox in Manchuria rare. The Manchu also did not develop the antibodies for their bodies to fight small pox. As a result, the Manchu deeply feared possible contagion of small pox. Preventative measures were taken so far that the prince was isolated in shelter to keep the disease away, military were trepid in setting foot on China's grounds, and people who contacted the small pox were ordered to leave the city. The fear was so deeply ingrained into the minds of the Manchu that it was no surprise that what came next was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Treaty Of Versailles And The Great Depression After the First World War, Europe was left in turmoil; tensions between nations were high and desperation for peace was growing. On January 10, 1920, the League of Nations was officially created as the Treaty of Versailles was generated. It was created with essentially two main goals: to keep peace via collective security, and to encourage international co–operation. It was produced with the idea that if one nation was attacked by another, the members of the League would act together to stop the assailant. Members of the League desired to begin a new arrangement of international relations that would assure an enduring state of peace based on a true mindset of forgiveness and compromise. Although member states were originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan's aggressive government was controlled by the military, and acted belligerently towards other nations. In 1931, China was in control of Manchuria, but Japan ruled the railway that ran through. In September 1931, after the Manchurian railway was destructed, Japan placed direct blame on the Chinese. In retaliation, the Japanese invaded Manchuria and created an independent state. China looked to the League for aid, which sent a commission to investigate the situation. However, the commission did not reach Manchuria until April 1932 and did not even report until that October. This response was clearly way too slow, making it much harder for the League to further enforce its ruling. The commission reported that Japan was the aggressor, and the League later voted for Japanese troops to leave Manchuria. Japan walked out on the meeting and refused to leave Manchuria. The League could not agree on economic sanctions or any bans, proving its weakness and inability to handle problems. In 1933, Japan removed itself from the League of Nations and continued to expand and build its empire. Although Japan is often regarded as the sole aggressor in this situation, many forget the hopelessness of people during this time. • 21. As Japan Joined The Global Community, Its Leaders Realized As Japan joined the global community, its leaders realized that in order for Japan to achieve the same successes as the Western powers, it needed to emulate the methods of the West. Notably, Japan sought to acquire colonial land holdings, in part because Japan lacked many natural resources of its own, but also to be on the same playing field as the Western powers who held many colonies, especially in Asia and the Pacific. Using the Western powers actions in China and Japan with the Unequal Treaties, as well as their actions in other Asian countries, Japan tried to justify their imperialism in Asia by stating they were trying to protect Asia from Western influences and to promote Pan–Asianism. Just like some Western powers have done, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, many Japanese industries expanded into Manchuria with the help of the Japanese government, who desired the concept of fukoku kyōhei, which aimed to increase Japan's economic and military power. World War I presented Japan a great opportunity to further two of its primary goals: propagating the idea of Pan–Asianism under Japanese rule, and acquiring natural resources for its growing industries. By allying with Britain and America, Japan could seize many imperial holdings of Germany and its allies for itself, as well as sell their military goods to the Western allies. Due to Japan's support of the winning side of the war and its inclusion in the League of Nations, they had recognition from the Western powers that their new colonies were legitimate. As heard from the many first–hand stories of people in these newly acquired territories, the Pan–Asianism Japan espoused was nothing more than a ruse, and Japan would act much the same as the previous Western rulers. Outwardly, Japan claimed that its imperial actions in Asia were to benefit all Asian people, and to promote Pan–Asianism in the face of Western imperial influence. However, this was mostly a guise by the militarists in Japan, who wanted a united Asia under the control of Japan. Essay on America's Open Door Policy The Open Door Policy is a term in outside issues at first used to allude to the United States strategy in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century sketched out in Secretary of State John Hay's Open Door Note, dispatched in 1899 to his European partners. The arrangement proposed to keep China open to exchange with all nations on an equivalent premise; hence, no global force might have aggregate control of the nation. The strategy called upon outside forces, inside their effective reaches, to shun meddling with any bargain port or any vested enthusiasm, to allow Chinese powers to gather levies on an equivalent support, and to show no favors to their own particular nationals in the matter of harbor duty or railroad charges. ... In September 6, 1899, U.s. Secretary of State John Hay sent notes to the significant forces, such as France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, and Russia, requesting that them announce formally that they might maintain Chinese regional and managerial trustworthiness and might not meddle with the free utilization of the bargain ports inside their authoritative reaches in China. The Open Door Policy expressed that all countries, including the United States, could revel in equivalent access to the Chinese market. In answer, every nation attempted to avoid Hay's appeal, taking the position that it couldn't submit itself until alternate countries had consented. In any case, by July 1900, Hay proclaimed that each of the forces had allowed consent on a fundamental level. In spite of the fact that settlements made after 1900 allude to the Open Door Policy, rivalry around the different forces for extraordinary concessions inside China for railroad rights, mining rights, advances, remote exchange ports, etc., proceeded unabated. In 1902, the United States government dissented that Russian infringement in Manchuria after the Boxer Rebellion was a violation of the Open Door Policy. The point ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psycho-American War The Russo–Japanese war began on February 8th, 1904 when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the Russian fleet and ended September 5th, 1905 with the treaty of Portsmouth led by Theodore Roosevelt. The war had a substantial effect on both of its participants, the Russians and the Japanese, but first this essay will talk about the events leading up to it, such as the Russian encroachment. In 1898 the Chinese and Russians finally negotiated a convention after three months by which china would lease to Russia Port Arthur in Talianwan, a tremendously strategic point which would be Russia's sole warm water port on the coast of the pacific, and its surrounding waters. Immediately after their agreement, Russia took no time in occupying the Port. A year later, Russia began to build the southern Manchurian railroad to further consolidate their position at Port Arthur. The building of the railroad led to be one of the causes of the Boxer rebellion. Because of the Boxer rebellion, the uprising of a secret organization in china against the spread of western and Japanese influence there, the Russians and Japanese had both contributed troops along with Britain, Austria–Hungary, The United States, India, Germany, France, and Italy to quell the uprisings and to relieve the international ligations under siege in ... How Did Japan Invade America The Invasion and Conquest of Manchuria 1931–1933 By George Litsas, Jacob Nastasi, Louis Nicholls, Tom Laird and Jarrah Lindhout The Invasion of Manchuria started on September 19, 1931, when Japanese forces elected to invade the Chinese territory of Manchuria. Causes: There were numerous factors that led to Japan invading Manchuria. In 1929, the Great Depression struck Japan hard. The civilian government looked weak in the eyes of the army, and the population looked to the military for strength. Army generals were admired by much of the population, especially amongst the homeless, and were seen to be far more influential than the politicians at the time. Verbal warnings obviously were ineffective, as Japan had simply chosen to ignore them. Trade sanctions were not an option, as no country wanted to cut off ties with Japan during the Depression. If a nation did give up trading with Japan, another country would willingly start trade with them. Military engagement was also not an option, as no country had the capacity to do so. Tony Howarth wrote, "the League was powerless in the face a determined aggressor." Many cartoons were also released highlighting the situation. The one to the right was drawn by cartoonist David Low in 1933 . Low was British, and disappointed in the acts of the League. • 41. How Did The Manchurian Plague Affect Politics In October 1910, a mysterious plague broke out in Manchuria, causing great terror due to its exceptional communicability. This Manchurian plague had unprecedented characteristic. In other word, this plague was pneumonic plague. Being a complete novelty, this plague had a crucial effect on medicine and politics in China. First, turning to the effect on medicine, this plague was the beginning of the infectious disease in China. It is true that Chinese term chuanran was regularly used. However, in the concept of chuanren, epidemic disease were transmitted by local qi entering people's bodies through the nostrils and mouth. In other words, the Chinese did not know infectious disease, that is, an acute and widespread epidemic that was transmitted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wu established the concept of infectious disease in China. He observed the novel fact by microscope that bacillus pestis found exclusively in the victim's lung. This meant that not local qi but this bacilli caused Manchurian plague and that this bacilli were transmitted directly thorough person–to–person contact. Due to this discovery and the real experience of those who were physically involved with handling the sick, people became convinced of the contagious nature of Manchurian plague. Thus, Chinese first recognized infectious disease, thorough coping with Manchurian plague. Then, turning to the effect on politics, geopolitical context in Manchuria was important. In those days, Japan and Russia were trying to gain sovereignty over Manchuria and they would use plague containment as an excuse their influence over Manchuria. Therefore, it was necessary for Qing to take initiative in coping with Manchurian plague. Again, Dr. Wu's said discovery played a crucial role. This discovery was a scientific victory over Japan and Russia that were only concerned about rats and bubonic plague. Thanks to this victory, Dr. Wu served as chairman of the International Plague Conference and Qing was able to take initiative, moreover, sovereignty over Manchuria. It started when Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, in northern China. (source B) As the Japanese aggression increased, its relations with the US deteriorated. Japan had a need for the establishment of heavy and light industries (in occupied Manchuria). (source B) She was lacking in natural resources itself, the search for alternative supplies underpinned foreign and military policy throughout the decade and led to the attack on the Pearl Harbour and the Pacific War. Military success and inherent sense of racial superiority led Japan to believe that it deserved to dominate Asian politics. Japan relied on America to supply them with many natural and industrial resources. (Source C) The embargo was the loss of oil. Unless Japan could import the oil it need, its navy would be dry–docked within a year and its factories would shut down in about 18 months. The Tripartite Pact meant ... • 49. The Factors and Objectives The Russo Japanese War 1. The Russo Japanese War began on February 8, 1904 and lasted until 5 September, 1905. The majority of the conflict was conducted within the region of Manchuria, however, several naval battles occurred within the Yellow Sea as well as in Tsushima Strait (the sea area between the southeastern Korean Peninsula and the southwestern portion of Japan). 2. The principle parties in this war were the Russian and Japanese Empires. While various aspects of the Chinese Empire played their roles in the lead–up to the conflict they did not, however, side with either of the two warring Empires during the war. Russia did have an alliance of sorts with France and Germany, however, this advantage in numbers was negated due to Japan's formal alliance with Great Britain, who declared support for Japan should a third party become involved in a conflict. 3. The main theme for the context of this war was Russian and Japanese simultaneous determination to develop spheres of influence in eastern Asia, primarily within the nation of China and specifically within the region of Manchuria. This sense of determination found Meiji Japan fighting the Chinese Qing Dynasty during the Sino Japanese War over control of Korea, which was a Chinese tributary state. This war lasted from 1894–1895 and concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Within the terms of the treaty, China recognizing the independence of Korea and ceded the Liaodong Peninsula, the island of Taiwan, and the Penghu islands ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Manchuria And Russia In The Mid-1930's Introduction The mid–1930's was an extremely turbulent time in the Far East. The Soviets and Japanese had been at each other's throats since the Russo–Japanese War from 1904 to 1905. The Treaty of Portsmouth ended the war in September 1905, which had given the Japanese South Manchuria and gave them the lease on the Liaotung Peninsula. This important because the Japanese would create the Kwantung Army to defend this area. "The number of regular troops Japan might station in the Kwantung Territory was not stipulated by treaty, but the initial strength of the Kwantung Garrison amounted to two regular army divisions and fortress units stationed at Port Arthur and Dairen." The Japanese were going to defend their newly acquired territory with this sizeable force. The Japanese also benefitted from World War I because they were able to put more forces into Manchuria and they were able to get concessions from China, which gave them more control over Manchuria. The Japanese had control over this part of the world. The Japanese would also attempt again to take advantage of a great situation. In 1917, the Russian tsar collapsed and plunged Russia into civil war and revolution and they were able to capture most of Manchuria. The Japanese were invited to the Washington armament conference of 1921, but it was because the Allies from World War I were trying to take away the land acquired by the Japanese. • 57. How Did Manchuria Occur World War II In 1919, at the end of the Great War, the Big Four; the US, Great Britain, France, and Italy, were trying to figure out where to lay the blame. Great Britain and France wanted Germany to take all of the blame, which in turn would make it a very weak nation. The United States on the other hand did not want to blame anyone. The US, Great Britain, and France came up with the Treaty of Versailles. The United States came up with the League of Nations, but Britain and France were able to lay all of the blame on Germany, crippling them beyond repair, or so they thought. Since Germany took all the blame they felt the need for revenge, thus starting the territorial take over in 1936. World War II began when countries decided to start invading other. • 69. American Imperialism : The Japanese Attack At Pearl Harbor... American imperialism in the 1800s was the primary cause of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. When Millard Fillmore sent Commodore Matthew Perry to open ports of trade in Japan the clock began ticking as to when Japan and America would go to war against each other. Perry's show of modern military armaments sent the nation that was controlled by a feudal warlord the Shogun into a state of chaos, and the eventual forced removal of the Shogunate. The subsequent infusion of militarism and modernism in Japan culture led to a need for raw material. America was a premier producer of oil and trade between the two nations was established. Germany and Great Britain supplied Japan with military training and equipment. Japan traded for scrap metals of all types, which they smelted into high–grade steel as they began to create their own modern military. However, America could not supply Japan with all of their needs and wants, therefore Japan embarked on their version of imperialism. They attacked China, Manchuria, fought with Russia in the Russo–Japanese war, took control of Korea, and once again attacked China. Soon, they required more raw materials as the West began to take notice of Japans rising status in the Far East. They were an ally during WWI, but soon after the war, they sought more independence, a release from what they considered unequal trade agreements, and more autonomy. In this paper, I will cover how the battle began, the reasons why it began, the conflicts and battles fought between Japan and Russia, the differences between Japan's and Russia's war tank technology, and how the battle affected the Second World War. From the beginning of the 1900s tension had grown between the Soviet Union and Japan after the Russo–Japanese War. In 1904, the Soviet Union's empire and Japan's empire collided in their own individual efforts take Manchuria, which is a part of China, and Korea(Young). Japan tried to talk the Soviet Union into letting them take over Korea, so the Soviet Union could go capture Manchuria. But the Soviet Union also wanted the northern part of Korea, so the Japanese government declared war against the Soviet Union. The Khalkhin Gol battle is closely related to the battles the Soviet Union and Japan fought before. Like the conflicts the Soviet Union's puppet state Mongolia, known as Mongolians People's Republic, and Japan's Manchukuo in Manchuria (Russo). The conflicts were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 113. The Causes Of The Russo-Japanese War The Russo–Japanese War developed out of the rivalry between Russia and Japan for control of Korea and Manchuria. In 1898 Russia had pressured China into granting it a lease for the strategically important port of Port Arthur. Russia thereby entered into occupation of the port. Additionally, in 1896 Russia had concluded an alliance with China against Japan and, in the process, had won rights to extend the Trans–Siberian Railroad Across Chinese–held Manchuria to the Russian seaport of Vladivostok, thus gaining control of an important strip of Manchurian territory. However, though Russia had built the Trans–Siberian Railroad, it still lacked the transportation facilities necessary to reinforce its limited armed forces in Manchuria with sufficient men and supplies. Japan, by contrast, had steadily expanded its army since its war with China in 1894 and by 1904 had gained a marked superiority over Russia in the number of ground troops in the Far East. After Russia reneged in 1903 on an agreement to withdraw its troops from Manchuria, Japan decided it was time to attack. The war began on February 8, 1904, when the main Japanese fleet launched a surprise attack and siege on the Russian naval squadron at Port Arthur. In March the Japanese landed an army in Korea that quickly overran that country. In May another Japanese army landed on the Liaodong Peninsula, and on May 26 it cut off the Port Arthur garrison from the main body of Russian forces in Manchuria. The Japanese then pushed ... It is these changes that have increasingly shaped the country into becoming one of the major economic powers of the current decade. This has also given the country a greater standing when considering the political influence that the country now enjoys in the global environment. One may consider the period that span three decades from 1890 as having the greatest impact in the trajectory that modern day has taken in the past and is going to take in the future. This period saw a number of very significant changes both in ideology and belief that provided china with the opportunity to take a new direction. One that was separate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was mainly due to the increasing weakness of the Qing dynasty to maintain control of the vast region with increasing pressure from these western nations. This is both in regards to military might and economic concerns. These two unique characteristics were responsible for the creation of an environment of social uneasiness among the people in China. In the consideration of the period between 1890s to the 1920s there are three major concerns that will be part of the analysis. These three are the political, social and economic environments of china during this period. This will include an analysis of the environments inherent characteristics at the time, the role these characteristics played in the change that occurred at this time and how these factors may have changed in themselves during this period. This consideration will be unified by one main theme and this is the influence that external parties or concerns played in the shaping of Chinese views, ideologies and actions during this period. This theme is mainly cognizant of the fact that there was a great deal of foreign activity in china during this time and that improvements in transport means had given many Chinese people the opportunities to travel far and wide, aside from their traditional neighbors of Japan. • 121. Japan's Surprise Attack On Pearl Harbor 2. There were several different events that led to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The events that led up to this attack were the occupation of Manchuria in 1931, the invasion of remainder of China in 1937, the bombing of the American gunboat Punay on December 1937 in China, the Invasion of Indochina in 1940, and U.S. Oil Embargo. The occupations of Manchuria in 1931 was when the Japan's Army had invaded one of China's Northern provinces Manchuria which went against the rules of the League of Nation. • 125. The Effects Of Western Imperialism In Japan In July 1937 the Japanese Military invaded China through the Northern region of Manchuria. This event was named the Marco Polo Incident and sparked the Second Sino–Japanese War, it was caused by Japan's desire for self–sufficiency after their economy was crippled by the global depression. This will be argued through the analysis of the effects of Western Imperialism and Global depression on Japan's economy, and increased expansionism and militarism in Japan. One of the earlier influences on Japan's decision to invade China was the effect of western imperialism. During the Meiji reform, Western Imperialism heavily influenced Japan and their country changed dramatically within those 44 years. From the success of their reform they began to develop ... Through intimidation and assassination of important Japanese figures, the extremists became increasingly influential in Japan and took control of the military. On September 18th, 1931 the Kwantung Army's extremists took action without the approval of the government and seized the town of Mukuden in Manchuria, after a bomb misfire. When Prime Minister Inukai tried to intervene to bring the military back under the control of the government, he was assassinated by naval officers.11 The assassination of the prime minister demonstrated that the government had lost control over the militarists. The militarists realized that they held more influence and power than the government. This resulted in the Kwantung army believing that they were stronger than any of their oppressors, and no longer required the approval of their imperials government to act.12 The military adapted an elitist mindset in addition to their extremist mindset. • 129. The Era Of The Safavid Empire Under The Rule Of Shah Ismail As a political tactic, rulers often portray themselves in a certain way in order to stabilize their reign and rule more effectively. Some take the approach of uniqueness by setting themselves apart from their subject population while others take the approach of sameness by emphasizing the similarities in which they share with the people. Not exclusively limited to apartness or sameness, some rulers have shown to employ a mix of both ruling styles. It is these versatile rulers who have experienced more successes in their reign because they are not compelled to only one ruling style, allowing them to better adapt to the needs of their ruling population. The apartness ruling style is best seen in the Safavid Empire under the rule of Shah Ismail. Shah Ismail uses religion as a political tool to control his state and does so by declaring Shi'ism, a smaller branch of Islam, as the state religion (#). After separating himself & his people from those who are not willing to abide to his ideologies, Shah Ismail can now demand the absolute loyalties from his subjects and persecute those who are deviant. This radical act further creates a deep chasm between Shi'ite Muslims and nearby Sunni Muslims neighbors. As a result, cultural flow and the exchange of beliefs between Sunni & Shi'ite states are essentially hindered. Ismail's apartness ruling approach is taken to the extreme with social, religious, and legal systems being strictly confined to Shi'ite doctrines (@). It is noted that ... • 133. A Report On The Manchurian Crisis On 18 September 1931, a bomb exploded near Mukden on the South Manchurian railway. There is sufficient evidence to believe that the Japanese planted the bomb themselves to cause tension with Chinese dissidents and justify their advancement into Manchuria. The Manchurian Crisis–arguably the most important dispute brought forth to the League of Nations since its establishment in 1920– had begun. As this incident was perceived as an act of aggression on the part of Japan, China immediately appealed to the League of Nations for assistance. However, in the end, nothing changed. One thing remains clear to this day: The League's response to halting Japan's escalating aggression during the Mukden Incident was ineffective. While most historians ... Yet, because the League of Nations was inherently weak in its foundation, the organization "needed the support of Great Britain and the United States" to effectively halt Japanese aggression (Sunoo 57). However, as stated previously, both countries were preoccupied with economic affairs in their homeland and were not interested in becoming involved in the Manchuria Crisis. During this period of scrutiny, United States' President Hoover was also preoccupied, for he was in desperate need to remain in political power. This, coupled with the fight against economic catastrophe, greatly reduced the amount of attention Hoover gave to foreign affairs" (Thorne 81). There was much support among the American public for an isolationist foreign policy, and so the League evidently lacked yet another vital nations' support from the beginning: The United States (Sunoo 57). The League of Nations formula to obtain collective security had "undoubtedly failed" (Northedge 284).
