Presentation by Laurel Schenkoske and Yingfei Chen from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, at the Language Symposium 2012, hosted at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Within the scope of the language classroom, learners cannot truly approach real-life application of their skills. So how can we keep our students motivated to practice outside the classroom? As we know, students send text messages, Facebook updates, and Tweets throughout the day. Why not give them the tools to do this in their new language? While social networking sites seem to be taking over our students lives, we as foreign language teachers can use that to our advantage! We will present the case studies of two different forms of social media at play in our own foreign language department: the Chinese programs Facebook , and the German programs Ning. We examine the similarities, differences, and benefits of both for use in L2 learning, and share some statistics that map their respective uses. We also examine whether task-based assignments achieve the best results on both platforms. Both sites allow for discussion postings, blogs, videos, and polls in which students can practice all four language skills, with a special emphasis on the interpersonal mode of communication. When social media is tied to language learning, it encourages students to play with new vocabulary and structures and helps to foster a community atmosphere. Both Facebook and Ning are well suited to accompany any foreign language classroom. Come see how we use each of them in our own foreign language classrooms, and get ideas to implement them in yours!

There is no “typical” student; how can we design courses that meet varied student needs? Traditional textbooks and other instructional materials with all rights reserved can often be difficult to make accessible or flexible enough to engage a diverse group of students. Join us to hear how open educational practices (OEP) including OER adoption can support accessibility of instructional materials and enable student-centered course design methodologies such as universal design for learning (UDL). Tara Bunag from the University of the Pacific discovered she had a student, who is blind, enrolled in her graduate statistics course just weeks before semester start. Unable to get the traditional statistics textbook converted to a screen-readable format in that timeframe, she turned to the OpenStax Introductory Statistics text which was digital, accessible, and free online. Integrating multiple OER with tactile resources and open data sets, she was able to achieve a more effective learning experience. Suzanne Wakim of Butte Community College will share how she uses open educational practices to design courses based on the principles of UDL to increase student choice, encourage critical thinking, and improve learning outcomes. These practices include giving students various ways of acquiring information, interacting with the content, and demonstrating understanding. The result has been far more engaging for both students and teacher. When: Wednesday, April 11th, 11am PT/ 2pm ET Featured Speakers: Tara Bunag, PhD., Senior Instructional Designer, University of the Pacific Suzanne Wakim, OER Coordinator, Honors Chair, Biology Faculty, Butte Community College

The studio is a hallmark trait of design education and practice. Working in a shared space, students solicit each other’s help and gain wisdom by seeing their peers’ work and failures, successes, and evolutions. It’s a tremendously powerful learning experience. It’s also tremendously resource intensive. Studios generally require dedicated, collocated space for students, and studio classes tend to have extremely limited enrollment. How might we create online experiences that are inspired by the design studio, and open those peer learning opportunities to learners around the globe? In this COIL Fischer Speaker Series event, Scott Klemmer shared his adventures in creating global-scale peer learning systems for formative feedback, small-group discussion, and summative assessment. In 2012, his research group collaborated with Coursera to launch the first massive-scale class with self and peer assessment. Since then, their systems have been used by more than a hundred massive online classes and on-campus flipped classrooms. Because online learning platforms embed pedagogy into software, they provide a powerful setting for using and building theory through experimentation. Scott also used their online learning research as a case study in Design at Large: experiments and research systems leverage real-world, web-scale usage to create practical theories for design. Currently, many design practices are faith-based rather than research-based. Why is there a shortfall of principles? In part, some see design as intrinsically mystical and impervious to investigation, because creative work is clearly complex and multifarious. And in part, this is a multidisciplinary effort. Design is front-page news, the topic of Hollywood films, and enrollment in design courses — both in person and online — has skyrocketed. For Scott, the most powerful part is how many people are excited about making stuff. Let’s match this enthusiasm with insight. The video of this presentation can be viewed at https://goo.gl/maJfh0

The flipped classroom is a model of teaching and learning in which the traditional course elements of lecture and private study are reversed. This session begins with a brief look at the pedagogy underpinning the technique, followed by examples of practitioners who successfully incorporate flipped classrooms into their teaching. We then consider some of the tools available to design possible learning objects and show how they could be used. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss the tools and techniques with each other and consider how, if at all, they might use them in their teaching.

How may we engage students in inquiry-led and problem-based learning through the use of technology? In this presentation we will consider how active learning principles can be applied to the design of blended learning courses, with digital tools employed to support active learning opportunities for our students. Through a presentation of case examples from the University of York (United Kingdom), we will consider how blended activities can encourage participants to engage in creative learning and problem-solving. An engagement model for active learning, derived from the case examples, is presented as a stimulus for a broader discussion on effective design approaches to support student-led inquiry and problem-solving activities.

I'm excited to share my latest predictions on how AI, robotics, and other technological advancements will reshape industries in the coming years. The slides explore the exponential growth of computational power, the future of AI and robotics, and their profound impact on various sectors. Why this matters: The success of new products and investments hinges on precise timing and foresight into emerging categories. This deck equips founders, VCs, and industry leaders with insights to align future products with upcoming tech developments. These insights enhance the ability to forecast industry trends, improve market timing, and predict competitor actions. Highlights: ▪ Exponential Growth in Compute: How $1000 will soon buy the computational power of a human brain ▪ Scaling of AI Models: The journey towards beyond human-scale models and intelligent edge computing ▪ Transformative Technologies: From advanced robotics and brain interfaces to automated healthcare and beyond ▪ Future of Work: How automation will redefine jobs and economic structures by 2040 With so many predictions presented here, some will inevitably be wrong or mistimed, especially with potential external disruptions. For instance, a conflict in Taiwan could severely impact global semiconductor production, affecting compute costs and related advancements. Nonetheless, these slides are intended to guide intuition on future technological trends.

ScyllaDB has the potential to deliver impressive performance and scalability. The better you understand how it works, the more you can squeeze out of it. But before you squeeze, make sure you know what to monitor! Watch our experienced Postgres developer work through monitoring and performance strategies that help him understand what mistakes he’s made moving to NoSQL. And learn with him as our database performance expert offers friendly guidance on how to use monitoring and performance tuning to get his sample Rust application on the right track. This webinar focuses on using monitoring and performance tuning to discover and correct mistakes that commonly occur when developers move from SQL to NoSQL. For example: - Common issues getting up and running with the monitoring stack - Using the CQL optimizations dashboard - Common issues causing high latency in a node - Common issues causing replica imbalance - What a healthy system looks like in terms of memory - Key metrics to keep an eye on This isn’t “Death-by-Powerpoint.” We’ll walk through problems encountered while migrating a real application from Postgres to ScyllaDB – and try to fix them live as well.

Ever caught yourself nodding along when someone mentions "delivering value" in Agile, but secretly wondering what the heck they actually mean? You're not alone! Join us for an eye-opening session where we'll strip away the buzzwords and dive into the heart of Agile—value delivery. But what is "value"? Is it a mythical unicorn in the world of software development, or is there more to this overused term? This isn't going to be a sit-and-get lecture. We're talking about a face-to-face, interactive meetup where YOU play a crucial role. Come along to: Define It: What does "value" really mean? We’ll build a definition that’s not just words, but a compass for your Agile journey. Contextualise It: Discover what value means specifically to you, your team, your company, and your industry. Because one size does not fit all. Deliver It: Share strategies and gather new ones for uncovering and delivering true value—no more shooting in the dark!
