This document discusses how Web 2.0 tools can be used to teach writing. It provides an overview of Web 2.0 and how it enables collaboration and user-generated content. It also describes two Web 2.0 tools, Gliffy and Wikispaces, that allow students to create diagrams, organize information, and collaboratively write and edit documents online. The document advocates using these kinds of tools to engage students in the writing process and help teachers implement student-centered writing activities.

An engagement model for active learning, derived from the case examples, is presented as a stimulus for a broader discussion on effective design approaches to support student-led inquiry and problem-solving activities.

Social media has become more ubiquitous within higher education and can play an important role in helping students become more self-determined in their learning and in building and sustaining a personal learning network (PLN) throughout their studies and beyond. This lecture will provide a framework for defining and choosing social media for use in the classroom, based on using a heutagogical (self-determined learning) approach to course design. The lecture will also demo a variety of ways for incorporating social media such as Twitter, e-portfolios, mind-mapping, GoogleDocs, and Diigo within the classroom.

Librarians and faculty members from three institutions collaborated to adapt a metaliteracy Digital Citizen badge for use with graduate literacy education students. The multi-faceted goal is not only for these students to affirm their roles as digital citizens, but also to actively teach and model such citizenship to their prospective students. This grant-funded project, which adapts content from an existing metaliteracy badging system, incorporates mechanisms to encourage a community of users, and serves as a model for collaborations with faculty across various disciplines.
In this session, project collaborators will briefly introduce metaliteracy (metaliteracy.org), provide an overview of the badging system (metaliteracybadges.org), and discuss the components added for this project, and mechanisms that worked well for collaborating. We are not only concerned with collaboration within the grant team; we also built components that will encourage educators to create open access learning objects for an Educators Corner and an Educators Conference.
Drawing from expertise as co-creators and researchers in initiatives such as the new ACRL Information Literacy Framework and the Connecting Credentials (connectingcredentials.org) and Global Learning Qualifications Frameworks (funded by the Lumina Foundation), we have worked together to create a robust resource that will be available to every SUNY institution, and, ultimately, to interested institutions beyond SUNY. We encourage participants to actively engage in the presentation by contributing ideas for badging opportunities based on your own professional development and curricular goals to an open forum in the Educators Corner.

As the proliferation of digital technologies and access to information continues to invite different ways of thinking, learning today is influenced by the ever-evolving, interconnected complex systems. While these systems have the potential to expand the ecologies of teaching and learning, many students and teachers have yet to tap into their richness. This session explores how connectivism and networked learning might be used to enhance the teaching and learning of first-year writing. I seek to demonstrate how personal technology, Open Educational Resources, and cloud-based computing could be integrated into the curriculum to cultivate interactive, self-directed learning. I will also consider the teacher’s role in facilitating the networked learning process, helping students to situate themselves within the complex relationships of technologies and discourse communities. I hope this creates an open forum to discuss the embedded rhetorics in technology, as well as to explore methodologies for research in the realm of connectivism.

But how can you use wikis to effectively provide collaborative opportunities in the classroom and elsewhere on campus? How do wikis compare with other collaboration applications? This session will take a look at the use of wikis in online courses and discuss other effective uses.

This paper develops the argument that students need opportunities to become designers or co-designers of their own processes of inquiry. With reference to current research and issues in design for learning and Web 2.0, it suggests that there may be value in developing new digital tools to enable students to take the lead in designing inquiry processes and in using design representations as resources for reflection and sharing with other students. Participants will have an opportunity to exchange perspectives and ideas on design for inquiry-based learning, and to respond to the view put forward in the paper.

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
