Study 5:
Information question in the present progressive: What are you reading?
Notice the formation of questions with what, where, and how:
I am reading.                                                 He is speaking.
Are you reading the newspaper? No.                           Is he speaking fast? No.
What are you reading?                                         How is he speaking?

They are writing.
Are they writing in class? No.
Where are they writing?

Use the appropriate question word and the word order of yes/no question.
Notice the use of the question word how:
How is he speaking? ……………………………………………….He’s speaking clearly.
How am I singing? ………………………………………………….You’re singing well.
How are we going there? …………………………………………..We’re going there by bus.
To answer a question with how; use a phrase with by (by bus, by car, by taxi), or use an
adverb. Some adverbs are short: hard, fast, well. Most adverbs are made by adding –ly to
adjectives:                       Clear   -       clearly
                                  Quick   -       quickly
                                  Slow     -      slowly

Practice:
Ask information questions about the pictures with what, where, or how. Answer the
questions.
What are you doing, listening or speaking? ………………………….I’m speaking.
How are you speaking, clearly or fast? ……………………………....I’m speaking clearly.
What is he doing, reading or writing? ………………………………...He’s reading.
What is he reading, astronomy or history? ………………………… He’s reading astronomy.
What are they doing, dancing or talking? …………………………...They’re dancing.
How are they dancing, slowly or fast? ……………………………… They’re dancing fast.
What is she doing, singing or laughing? …………………………… .She’s singing.
Where is she singing in a theater or in a club? …………………… She’s singing in a club.
What are you doing, eating or drinking? ……………………………..I’m drinking.
What are you drinking, milk or coffee? ………………………………I’m drinking milk.
What is he doing, sleeping or studying? …………………………….He’s studying.
Where is he studying, in the kitchen or in the bedroom? ………….He’s studying in the kitchen
Where am I going, to Angeles or to San Francisco? ………………You’re going to los Angeles
How am I going, by bus or by car? …………………………………..You’re going by car.

Do not use the progressive form with like, be, see want, know, or need.
                             I like apples.
                             I am very happy.
                             I see the little boy.
                             I want the newspaper.
                             I know Henry.
                             I need a pencil.

Speak:
   1. Carolyn: Is Philip in school?               2.        Bill: Where is Alice?
       Carlos: Yes. He’s in the library.               Mrs. Hill: She’s in the living room.
      Carolyn: What is he doing?                            Bill: what is she doing?
       Carlos: He’s studying history.                  Mrs. Hill: She’s watching television.

3. Richard: Where are you going?
    Susan: I’m going to Chicago.
   Richard: How are you going?
    Susan: I’m going by bus.
   Richard: Where are you staying?
    Susan: I’m staying at a motel.

To answer a question with how; use a phrase with by (by bus, by car, by taxi), or use an adverb. Some adverbs are short: hard, fast, well.
