PREFACE


The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is accelerating
in tandem recently. Today, ICT is inherently embedded in almost every aspect of our
everyday life, including education. One of a number implementation of ICT in
education which is showing off its significant potential and development is the
implementation on of ICT in language learning. It is known widely as Computer
Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Experts and education practitioners are highly
supporting the use of ICT in order to soar the efficiency and effectiveness instruction,
in which hopefully increasing students’ target language mastery and understanding. In
other words, the integration of ICT in language learning field is unavoidable,
considering both ICT and language learning are inherently supporting and are indeed
two sides of the same coin.

Course Name      : Technology in Language Learning
Course Code      : BIP 322
Study Program    : English Education
Semester         : Even Semester of 2011/2012

1. Course Description
   This course is aimed to make students understand the basic concepts of ICT in
   language learning – including “web-based learning”, “e-learning”, or “blended
   learning”. It also provides practical examples of how to find appropriate materials
   to be used in English teaching and learning. Moreover, by joining this course
   students are expected to be able to develop appropriate ICT based language
   learning material/program, and how to implement it. In order to support the
   presented material, this course requires students to do some practices to hone
   students’ creativity in developing and implementing ICT in language learning
   context as well. However, students have to bear in their mind that beside the book
   used in this coursethey must actively find appropriate supporting material and
   resources concerning with this field either from other printed books or materials
   provided in the internet.

2. Objectives
   By attending this course students are able to:
   1. improve their technology literacy;
   2. improve their English learning method and approach concerning with the
      utilization of ICT (on-line or off-line);
   3. Improve their English teaching method and approach concerning with the
      utilization of ICT (on-line or off-line).

4. Course Approach and Strategy
   The strategy applied during the course includes:
   a) observation and exploration (on-line and off-line),
   b) discussion and presentation,
   c) micro teaching (emphasized on ICT utilization),
   d) course project (students are required to submit a project to pass the course).

5. Course Assessment
   Assessment will be based on students’ participation during the course, their scores
   of test (quizzes), performance during micro teaching and final assignment (course
   project), with the following percentages:
   a. Classroom participation        : 20%,
   b. Scores of test (quizzes)       : 20%,
   c. Micro teaching                 : 25%,
   d. Final assignment (project)     : 35%.
