Diary of Craig Chan
August 13,2010
Dear diary,
Today I got bullied again. For the fifth time this week. And it’s not even
Wednesday! You see, I was born then dropped off at this stupid orphanage. I
was just deserted by my parents! The worst thing is that I don’t have a name
or any information on where I was born. I gave my self the name Craig Chan
because I learned about a guy named Craig Kielburger stood up for children’s
rights and I want to follow his example, and Chan just sounds right to me.

Dear diary,
I’ve finally got some good news! Not having a nationality is not allowed
according to the UN Convention of Child Rights Article 7:You have the right to a
name, and this should be officially recognized by the government. You have
the right to a nationality (to belong to a country). . It was because I didn’t
have a nation that I was being bullied anyway. Maybe I could use this
information to stop the others from bullying me.

Dear diary,
It’s no use……I tried it and the bullies (who are, by the way, called
Charles Krutz and Adrian Lam) but they just laughed at me and told me that
the UN Convention of the Rights of the Children people would never catch
them. Part of me knew that that was right, but I refused to agree with it
because it made me feel a little better, like there was still hope.

Dear diary,
I tried telling the teacher about the problem that I wanted a nationality
and that without a nationality I was getting bullied, but the teacher didn’t even
look at me. I guessed that maybe I needed to think of another way to stop
them.
August 17,2010
Dear diary,
I found a friend! This morning, a new kid came to school, and he doesn’t
have a nationality either. His name is Aaron Lee. He got the name while
watching a cartoon on Pearl TV. He said that he was going to move to my
orphanage this afternoon. We talked about the Pros and Cons of not having a
nationality.(we came up with a lot of Cons but not a lot of Pros) I have a
feeling that maybe he was a Chinese boy because he was kind of yellow(not to
be racist.)
August 18,2010
Dear diary,
This morning I went to our school’s computer lab and started a
conference on Facebook with other kids without a nationality. The result was a
gigantic conference where 1000 kids were discussing what they felt and what it
2. was like a their school. One kid said that he quit school because of the
problems. That gave me an idea......

Dear diary,
I’ve decided, and Aaron has agreed. We’re going to move schools. I did
some research last night and I found a school that was specially designed to
help orphans like us. It was called The Canadian International School for
Orphans or C.I.S.O. Too bad it’s in Canada. Luckily, there’s another branch
close by and I got the orphanage people to let me and Aaron try to move
schools.

Dear diary,
Today me and Aaron had our interviews. We passed easily because the
questions they asked were easy and we learned that in our old school.
August 21,2010
Dear diary,
We move tomorrow, so I’d better start getting ready. I need to introduce
myself. I think that I also need to prepare a speech to introduce myself.
Hi class! I’m Craig Chan and this is my friend Aaron. I don’t know my
nationality because I don’t have parents. Actually, I do have parents,
except that I never knew them. In my last school, I was bullied a lot. I
hope, and I think that you are more kind and will not harm me or my
friend. I am 10 years old and so is my friend here. I started a Facebook
conference a few days ago. I hope that at least some of you will check
it out. Did any one of you ever feel like you’re the most hated person in
the school? That’s what I felt in my old school. Can I ask if anyone
would be kind enough to show me around? As you know, I’m new
around here.
After I finished, I showed it to Aaron and he seemed to like it too. Then
he wrote a letter too.
Hi! I’m Aaron Lee and went to the same school as my friend Craig. I’d
like to share a short description of me so that you know me better.(by
the way, I got this from my orphanage profile) I am a responsible
student that is very good at music and art. I don’t really like to write
things, so I don’t get good grades there even if I’m trying. I’m part of
the Facebook conference Craig created since I have the same problems
Craig does. I was also bullied but not as much since I was only there
for a few days before Craig found this school. Craig didn’t introduce his
academical skills so I’ll do it for him. Craig is really good at math and
literacy, but is hopeless at art. That is why we try to help each other.
August 21,2010
Dear diary,
I read the letter out and so did Aaron. The class liked it and they didn’t
tease me at all. I even made some friends. My nightmare was over.
August 22,2010
Dear diary,
I’m going to throw you away because although the children at the CISO
are nice, they don’t approve of diaries. They say it’s “girly”.
3. Conclusion
Dear diary,
Since I’m going to throw you away, I’m going to write a conclusion about
what I feel. I think that nationality is a good thing to have, but not having a
nationality has good things too. Sometimes, you won’t be asked to join the
army because they’re not really sure if you’re from their country.
