2. What are Modal verbs?
• They are verbs and we use modal verbs to talk
about ability, asking permission, making requests
and offers.
• We are going to study now modal verbs of ability.
That means actions that you can or can’t do.
3. • CAN (POSITIVE ACTION) something possible.
• Example: She can sing.
Sarah can play the piano.
Mary can cook.
• CANNOT/CAN’T(short form) (NEGATIVE ACTION) something
impossible.
• Example: He cannot/can’t swim.
Peter can’t drive a car.
Sebastian can’t climb a tree.
• INTERROGATIVE
To make questions we change the position of the modal verb, we put it
first.
Example: Can I sit here?
Can she ride a bike?
Can Alex play the guitar?
